  • Overland on public land in West Virginia! The East Coast has much less public land then the West, BUT it is still out there! You just need to learn how to read maps or use software so you can find where to go and what is required to enjoy it. West Virginia is absolutely beautiful and reminds me in many ways of a jungle. Join us in this video as we fight the weather to find overlanding nirvana!

There are some parts, especially up the hollows that don't get the sun at all because it's blocked on both sides by the hillsides and the trees. I was down there in June. Looks like we explored the same general area, but I didn't find that overgrown trail you guys found.
If it is the same road I think it is where you guys drove up to 4700', we camped in that clearing near the top. We were wondering what the hell was up with all the downed trees. It looked like they were pushed over with a dozer. The next day as we made our way north to US-250 we found a brand new area that the forest service was just opening up with camp sites and mountain bike trails. The forest service had a tent set up with half dozen staff there. We talked to the District Ranger, Jack Tribble, and asked about the downed trees. What he told us is when the area was strip mined decades ago, they just left a couple of inches of dirt with solid rock right underneath. This prevented any big trees from growing and resulted in those stands of conifer (I think they were spruce, maybe). What they did with the dozer was push those trees over and ripped up the rock behind them to allow larger deciduous trees to take root. This way the forest could return to its wild state. You can see the grooves the ripper shank left in your video around 12:41. See below.
    www.fs.usda.gov/ccrc/adaptation/adaptation-examples/monongahela-national-forest-restoring-strip-coal-mine-lands
Jack was very enthusiastic about recreation in the area, mainly camping and biking. We told him there were lots of people like us that wanted something a little more difficult than well groomed gravel roads. Overall it seems like they recognize the potential and the newfound desire to get away from it all and sequester yourself in the forest for a couple days.

Talk about getting lucky! Guy could have walked around the front of the vehicle. Anything could have happened. Real happy he’s ok. Great video 👍.

This takes me back to college when I wheeled through the George Washington National Forrest which snaked back and forth between VA and WV. I had an 06 TJ and my buddy had a 15 JK. Good times, good memories 😊

If I would have known you were visiting my home state, I would have made you hand deliver the stickers and patches I just ordered from you guys. Haha. Glad you enjoyed your trip to WV, Nate. Love the channel. Keep up the great work.

It's interesting hearing the impression our forests make on a PNWer, lol. Especially in a regenerating stand it does feel like a jungle when it hits about that 15 year mark and the canopy is closing just a few feet overhead. Throw in some wild grape or ivy vines for good measure.
As for Jon's manual faux pas, it's a XJ. They wheel so easy it's like they're doing it themselves.

I've learned the parking brake lesson as well. I too got lucky. my JK rolled back about 20ft and hit a tree. If that tree hadn't been sufficient enough to stop my jeep, it was heading over an embankment. From then on, I turn it off and put it gear. if i still don't trust it, I chock a wheel with a rock.

You don't have to be off-road to have your car take off on you....My manual equipped Honda Accord took off on me when I pulled up to a store. I caught it before I got out of the car, but you have to remember to make sure your car won't move when you stop when you drive a vehicle without "Park".
