  • What a great overland adventure! This entire trip was a battle with the elements! We didn't have big enough tires; we probably should have had chains and my brake system had a total failure. This poor Toyota Tacoma is not holding up very well to all the wheeling I do lol. But honestly, this is exactly the kind of trip we dream about. We are seeking out places to snow wheel that will be challenging! Thank you, Ed, Nick and Tim, for such a great weekend, and thank you at home for watching! If you want to plan your own adventure like this, make sure you use good Offroad software like OnX so you can get home safe. Make sure you check out the perspective from Edward Shin ‎@KrokemOutdoors

Nate! Dude I've got to say, this one left me with a massive grin on my face!!!. I was stationed in iceland for 2 years and got to take advantage of some very off rout site seeing!. I can relate to the snow fun and things going sideways! But without the benefit of trees... no trees in iceland. I truly envy your life style. San antonio had exactly NO offroad action. For someone like me, no Bueno at all!. Closest place is pay to play in marble falls. Glad I found your channel. I'm digging your builds! I myself started on dirt bikes and go cart as a kid. Later on an 88 2x4 pre-runner Ford ranger with a 4 banger and 33's took it everywhere I shouldn't! Then graduated to a full size 89 Eddie Baur bronco 5.0, yanked the sway bars while doing a 4" suspension lift in 1 weekend in my buddies navy hydraulics shop on base/on the flight line! Luckily we got it done before 7am Monday morning. That thing would go anywhere! Ran glaciers and all! Got involved in an international incident with the govt and got front page on the BBC. Luckily not my fault but I was part of it... I was part of a recovery team from base to rescue a group in the mts. The hh60's had too much bad weather to go up for the rescue. Icelandic rescue ended up dispatched in their Nissan diesels patrols on 44's. It was eventful! Next I had a 84 Nissan hard body in Germany. Got medically retired In 2007 now I'm here in San antonio. I've got a e99 4x4 Ford f350 crew cab longed with a steel utility bed on 35's 7.3 TD. My baby. I just acquired a 2006 jeep commander unlimited 5.7 hemi with quadradrive 2 . Love it. Only paid $3,200! There is a class action lawsuit trying to take off against Toyota for the terrible rear brakes. They vibrate, and that’s what’s taking your wheel cylinder out. Also double check the pivot point of the shoes, they tend to come loose. I had to weld one back together to get functional brakes on a Taco.

Great video Nate! I love snow wheeling too! Snow can be so different from one day to another and here in the high country of Wyoming snow travel in late Dec through Jan can be treacherous. With very little moisture in the air and very cold temps, a lot of time our snow turns to sugar. It gets so bad that sometimes you can't even travel on snow shoes. I like to take my atv out on tracks and sometimes travel is almost impossible with that. Wait a couple of weeks and the weather warms up and the snow is able to pack again and things get better. I spent three hours buried to the frame in my lifted and locked TJ with a cummins R2.8 last weds. I was trying to follow a two track in a ground blizzard after busting drifts all morning long chained up on all 4. I couldn't read the terrain due to the blowing and drifting snow and I ended up in a deep wash with no winch points. I tried my pull pal with my rear winch and it wouldn't hold. I shoveled the entire undercarriage of the Jeep out and was able to drive back and forth 10 feet but couldn't get out backwards, just kept digging in. I finally gave it another shot forward and buried it again. This time after digging mostly out, I got the pulpal to anchor on a piece of sage brush and I got out! In this case the chains hurt me, I would have rather aired down to about 3 psi and tried to float out. But, it's all a great time! Keep up the great videos and if you every want to wheel in some new country, come to N. Wyoming!

Snow is like mud, it is different everywhere you go. My snow is not your snow and your mud is not my mud. We tend to 'judge' things based on our own similar experiences; BUT, believe me! even my local snow varies whether it is in Big Cottonwood Canyon or Little Cottonwood Canyon. Is it morning snow or evening snow? Sun on it? Moab snow is different from Burley, Idaho snow (all places I have lived or farmed). I am so glad I don't have to deal with the I-80 Donner Summit concrete snow. As both a double black diamond skier and a 55 year snow-driving veteran, I thought I knew snow UNTIL I spent some time back in the Washington DC area in a January a few years back and discovered that both "cold" and "snow" mean something totally different back there. Great vid. Glad all ended well. Hope to encounter you in the wild.

While in Alaska I used to throw chains all the way around on the deuce and a half go almost anywhere off road. The thing was a beast with ten wheels of chains churning through the snow. I'm a chain believer.

outstanding video. absolutely love snow wheeling. we just don't get that kind of sticky wet snow here in colorado very much. it's usually that garbage dry powder that you can't stay on top of to save your life haha!

Every time you said ice it just made me think of the SXSBlog sheet metal studs. It’s a terrible idea but one day I’ll give it a try on a truck, currently in Tucson AZ so not anytime soon 😂

In the snow, it is best to ride on winter tires lowered to a minimum pressure of 0.2-0.3. Mud tires in deep snow do not show themselves very well, as they begin to dig, and not tamp. With a lot of experience, it's quite difficult to get stuck in the snow.
