  • The lightsaber is the weapon of a Jedi, who uses it to protect the weak of the Galaxy from evil… It’s color comes from the force affinity of a user at the moment they harvest their kyber crystal, but the design of the hilt is an expression of the Order’s creativity, needs and requirements of the time. This led to a huge variety of hilt designs across the years, each serving specific purposes. So let’s break down every single lightsaber type in Star Wars Canon, and what they mean! #starwars #lightsabers #obiwankenobi
*Number 1. The Standard Single Bladed Lightsaber.* This lightsaber was the most common across the Jedi Order and although was less common among Dark Side Orders, it was still widely used. The sabers produce a single blade of plasma, in the color of the kyber crystal inserted inside of it. Importantly though, these sabers can only operate at a single length, which is determined when it is constructed by it’s user… This will be important in some later variants.
**At number 2. we have the Standard Double Bladed Lightsaber**. This was a variant enjoyed mostly by Dark Side orders like the Sith, and they contained two kyber crystals inside. Both sides of the blade could emit two different colours, although this was pretty difficult to achieve because of how kyber crystal color is determined, through the traits and personality of the user when collecting it. The reason these blades were preferred by Dark Side orders were not only because they were more offensive in style, but also because they required two kyber crystals. This inherently requires greed when collecting your crystals, forcing more than one to align to you at once…
*For number 3. there is the flickerphase lightsaber.* This is an incredibly rare form of lightsaber which has been modified to allow it’s blade to ignite and extinguish at random times during a battle. As you can imagine, this makes using it extremely difficult, even for the most skilled of Jedi, but if it was mastered, it was one of the most deadly. Now in the Jedi order, turning off your saber in the middle of battle is considered extremely dishonorable, and for that reason, this saber was generally frowned up and you’d probably be bullied for crafting it as a young Padawan…
*Number 4. we have the lava crystal Lightsaber. These* sabers were created by inserting a type of Lava crystal into a regular lightsaber. These crystals were extremely rare, and only found on the hellish world of Mustafar, meaning nearly no Jedi used them. When ignited, it’s blade would become thick and generate extreme heat. Not to mention it would spew out huge chunks of flame and lava, sometimes hitting its user… Because of this, they were very rarely used.
*At number 5. is the Sickle-Bladed lightsaber.* This blade was used in ancient times by an extreme sect of the Sith, including Darth Noctyss, and was curved at it’s end. Over the years, no Jedi historian was ever able to figure out how this blade was crafted, but it was believed to be incredibly effective at taking the heads of opponents off due to it’s shape.
*Moving to number 6. we have the hinged double bladed lightsaber.* This variant is based off the standard double bladed weapon preferred by the Sith, but featured a hinge in the centre of the hilt. Both blades could be activated while the weapon was collapsed, which allowed it to trap the blade of an emey. The most prominent user of this weapon was Jedi General Pong Krell, which makes a ton of sense because of both his size and tendency towards the Dark Side. A white variant was also used by an Umbaran Jedi named Orla Jareni during the high republic, and Dark Rey used one too.
*After that at Number 7. is the Double Bladed Spinning Lightsaber used by the Inquisitors.* This weapon was crafted by Members of Darth Vader’s inquisitorious and it allowed the user to spin both blades at incredibly high speeds. It could also be used with only one blade, and could even detach if necessary, allowing it’s wielder to use Jar Kai, the Double bladed form. Finally, this blade could also be utilized as a helicopter, making it a great method of escape for Inqusitors… Although that is very controversial, so let me know in the comments, saber copters or no saber copters… Just don’t get too heated down there.

Doubt they'll ever explain the dark saber's creation but my personal head cannon is that it's probably a crystal that was bled, healed, then bled again and repeated till it was led almost dead. I've always seen the saber as near death because of the black blade with wisps of white mixed in. To me that would also explain it growing heavier off the thoughts, emotions, and actions, almost like it's doing its best to keep itself alive while it's in use.

The tonfa and spear variants are possibly my favorite unique lightsaber handle designs.
The spear variant had a long shaft of a handle (approximately 5-6 feet) with a single short blade on one end. The blade was only said to be around 2 feet long. This increased reach gave profound advantages in combat, but if the opponent could close the gap, it would leave the spear user in a difficult predicament.

If I were to make my own I would want it to have a cross guard similar to what is shown at 7:40, you would also be able to remove the blade from the shaft so you could use it as a regular lightsaber because both the spear and the saber has its advantages and disadvantages, lastly the shaft would be made of a lightsaber resistant metal(cortosis wouldn't do well because its brittle). perhaps it could even have another short blade on the other side.

I would like to add info about Exar Kuns lightsaber. While it is legends now, we do have more info about it. It was an incredibly complex creation and most likely the deadliest design by far. An important thing to note about the lightsaber is that it was designed by possibly the greatest lightsaber duelist of all time. Exar Kun was an incredible duelist and extremely arrogant about it. However it was not for nothing as he was only ever defeated as a jedi by his instructor but later killed him after his fall. Exar Kun was essentially a type of Bruce Lee for the Jedi and studied form VI extensively. While often known as being a jack of all trades but master of none style, that was not the intent for the style. It was meant to be a starting point for a duelist to integrate what worked for them personally from the other styles. Much like the MMA of today and this factored into his lightsaber design. After falling to the dark side Exar Kun redesigned his lightsaber from a traditional single hilt to the infamous double sided lightsaber. It still had the same hilt length as a single bladed lightsaber as he did not use it the same way as others would come to use it in the future. He used it as a way to keep his opponents on the back foot and attack from unexpected angles. He would primaraly use it single sided but would alternate which end was ignited during the fight. It also included two other features that he would weave in to his fights on the fly. One was the dual phase, where he could double or half the length of either blade. The other was a power intensity control, so he could intensify his blades power to cut through materials that normally deflected lightsabers and he could also reduce the power so that while the blade remained it would pass harmlessly through anything, even other lightsabers. He would combine these elements in his most difficult duels but unless he considered his opponent worthy, and he rarely did, he would stick with a traditional style of use. However, when he would combine a constantly shifting blade with his signature adaptive style of dueling it is no wonder he was such a deadly duelist. Imagine trying to fight someone who's lightsaber constantly changed sizes, sides and intensity while also never being sure if the blade coming at you was even able to be blocked. In my opinion, this was the deadliest trick in his arsenal. He would often pass the blade through his own body to attack from a normally impossible angle. The split second decision making needed to determine if he had made the blade solid or not could end the duel immediately. It was never seen in full swing as his arragonce grew and would most often overpower his opponents far before ever needing to consider using its other features. It is one of the coolest lightsaber designs and I hope that we get to see it in full action in canon and that the creators are able to fully utilize all aspects of it as it would make an amazing spectacle to behold.

    • @porakiyadraekojin3390

Okay, that is a badass lightsaber and dueling style. And I thought my idea for a a dual phase emitter to hilt combining lightwhip was awesome. Imagine if Grievous had 4 of Exar Kun's lightsaber 😱

    • @XionDarkblood13
      @XionDarkblood13 Год назад +2

@@porakiyadraekojin3390 While it would be amazing I am not sure even a machine could handle the timings needed to pull off that style. Exar Kun relied heavily on the force to know the timings and even operate the switches with precise timings. If Obi-Wan could get through Grievous defenses then I am pretty sure he is not fast enough to effectively use Exar Kuns lightsaber style. I believe that when Kreia talks about the "old lightsaber masters" and how modern Jedi are "as children comared to them" she is talking about Exar Kun and those who could at least attempt to challenge him. I think though what truly made Exar Kun the best was his ability to adapt and decieve his opponents into a false sense of security when he was ten steps ahead of them in the lightsaber duel. Kind of how chess masters play them game, Exar Kun was predicting their movements way ahead and so he knew how to lead them into the perfect position to deal the killing blow. For example, from my own understanding and interpretation, he would leave a slight opening in his left side (or some other barely detectable weakness in form) that his skilled opponents would pick up on but later in the duel Exar Kun would let that slight opening up a bit bigger knowing that they have been waiting for it and since he knows where they will strike and how, he would counter and deliver a mortal blow. The extra features of his lightsaber were tools to enhance his existing style. I think if a modern Jedi/Sith tried to use something similar they would fall into a trap of focusing too much on the "gimmick" and lose to a more skilled opponent. Exar Kun understood that a gimmick could only take you so far and if you rely on it too much it will be your downfall, especially if you find yourself without your lightsaber.

@@porakiyadraekojin3390 I thought about it a bit more after replying and maybe saying Grievous couldn't handle it wasn't fair. I think its more a problem that the Force is predictive in nature. So a suffeciently skilled Jedi/Sith would always win against a non-Force user. Grievous was impressive and killed many Jedi but usually (at least what we have seen from the Clone Wars series) not alone and not in a contest of pure skill. It doesn't matter how fast you can strike or move if your opponent already knows what you are going to do. You could be moving at light speeds but if a person is able to know where that strike is going to hit then they can dodge it. It's how people who catch arrows and stuff blindfolded do it. Not to diminish the skill and impressive speed and reflexes needed to pull it off though. Grievous was the perfect tool for Sidious as he was extremely effective and underhanded but easily dealt with if he went rogue or when his usefullness came to an end. I am sure Grievous would have thouroughly enjoyed the tricky nature of Exar Kuns style though. I wonder if it actually would be enough of an edge to beat a Jedi/Sith head on? The Force is predictive but it also relies on the user to react correctly as well. Obi-Wan was a remarkable Jedi because he would just let the Force guide his actions and movements totally. I think he somewhat envied Anakins agency when doing stuff but it's one of the reasons Obi-Wan was able to defeat Grievous. He let the Force guide him into the right situations to defeat him. I really liked the novelization of Revenge of the Sith because it really expanded on the inner thoughts and motivations of the characters. IMO it was the OG salvation of the movie before Filoni helped flesh out the prequel era. It really showed how effed the Jedi were because of their own choices and how lost they were with the cloud of the Dark Side preventing them from seeing the bigger picture. Like Kreia said "What is a Jedi without the Force? Watch as one tries to hold a lightsaber or a blaster. They are like a lost child."

Personally, I really like the Broadsaber, it should probably work with forms 2, 3, 4, and 5 as well, because a longsword (which is what the saber is based upon) are precise and great for defense or counterattacks, along with that the light weight (of the broadsaber, of course) and blade like design making faster attacks, along with being Aerodynamic

Side note, while jedi temple guards sabers are noted as being "lightsaber pikes", when comparing their sabers (hinged double bladed sabers) with real world pikes, i don't consider them pikes.
Not sure why they are referred to as pikes in universe, as when you look up lightsaber pikes ypu get two very different weapons: the temple guard saber, and what I would consider fits the role of a "lightsaber pike" alot better. That of a staff with a shorter blade (a few feet in length at most) on the end of it.
In the end, its another thing about star wars where the lore is weird, or not explained well.
(Did some more research, and as usual we have more info from legends than Canon lol) in legends, a lightsaber pike is an actual pike. A long staff like melee weapon with a shorter blade on one end. The temple guards weapons being referred to as pikes is also directly put into question. (as to why. They are definitely labeled pikes)
I wonder if the original author who introduced them as 'pikes' either did it because it sounded cool, or because they didn't actually know what a pike looked like.

And its also extremely effective. In most cases where you get into a bind with an opponent, you have a free line of fire. This forces other force users to fight in a way they are just not used to and puts you into an advantage.
Jedi in general prefer to use non-lethal force which is quite hard with a normal saber, thus leading to enemies escaping. In this case the integrated stun function helps a lot.

Ive had a cool idea for a light saber that pretty much incorporates count dookus curved hilt and ezras blaster saber. So this is how it would work: the hilt would kinda be like dooku's but mor curved at the end to ack like a handle/grip to use the blaster part. How it would shoot is it would fire out the emitter and be like a charged shot. There would be like a trigger that pops out when you switch it to blaster mode. (The only way i could interpret how the blaster mode would work/look like is basically like a light saber flint lock thing

I personally rock a light foil style lightsaber With ( keyblade used by Riku When he was controlled by ansem during the 1st game but only one side of the keyblade hand guard ) style hand guard With a protruding solid spike on the pommel.
In its lore it is made out of beskar Coated in Frick and then cortosis on the outer layer except the emitter end. With a pink dantooine crystal. The handle total length without the handguard spike on it Just a little over 11" long so it's a hand and a 1/2 So I can use it one handed or I can use it too handed very easily, And because the handguard is made out of the same exact materials as the Hilt It is lightsaber resistant And I can block with the handguard as well And unless they hit within the 1st 2 mm Of the emitter shroud itself, That lightsaber is technically lightsaber blade proof.
Only something like a lava blade lightsaber or something that has been incredibly infused with the dark side like exar kun which Could supposably cut through beskar Or something similar to how star killer With how he could Channel force lightning Throughout the entire lightsaber and not shorted out, Would I have to worry about anything.
And by the gods In the Star Wars tabletop game I played that thing Saved my booty so many times in fights, Because I could have a successful block pretty much everywhere on the entire blade including the handle no unless someone did something like the phase blade And/or turned off their blade and then reignited it right after they got past my blade.
