      I have that chip,but recently upgraded to a ryzen 1700. It really shines when you overclock it. I pushed it to 4 ghz with a 980 ti. The only thing is it uses tons of power. Its sits at 11k in firestrike physics score and 14k with a 4ghz overclock.

    • @johnny_rook
      @johnny_rook 7 лет назад +4

      +Chubbyemu If you overclock that X5650 to 4Ghz (can certainly do 3,8Ghz at least on that cooler at ~1.3v), it will most likely make your computer last those 3 years you were talking about. Damn, had you OC'ed that 930 to 4Ghz and you would be rocking current Core i5 CPUs stock level of performance already! I know this because, I have a 920 C0 from 2008 still kicking, as well, and I've seen the benchmark scores it produces @4Ghz. That's why Overclocking exists in the first place: to squeeze the most performance possible out of an outdated chip; I don't overclock a chip that is a brand new product. Why should I? Is the fastest already. But I do start overclocking when that chip gets replaced on the market by a new, better and faster chip

    It's crazy how a currently $20 server CPU from 2010 is faster than an originally $300 high end consumer CPU from 2010. Although I saw it for $65. Server CPUs become much cheaper than consumer CPUs over time because big companies are selling them in bulk because they upgraded to newer CPUs. Other components don't really become that much cheaper to be really useful. Often a lower end modern component is faster and uses less electricity while costing the same.

      Nothing crazy. The "currently $20" originally costed $600-$1000.
      The LGA771 platform was flawed with FBDIMM power usage (15W each FBDIMM), LGA1366 platform has 40W chipset overhead compared to the next generation chipsets. My PC can't consume less than 100W@wall while similar ivy bridge i5 idles at under 60W.

    Man, this is the first video of yours I watched and you got yourself a sub! It's curious how we take these things for granted yet PCs are on of those rare devices that really give a lot of bang for buck in the long term and last quite some time. Not many electronic everyday devices last as much and can work properly for the majority of that time-span. People say that desktop PCs are dead and they praise mobile devices but no smartphone/tablet will last that much (let alone work decently after 3 or so years), and they are not upgrade-able, and they really aren't even productive, they're mostly devices for consuming content, while PCs can do all sorts of things. Speaking as a photographer, my PC is the essential part of the whole process. You can have all the cameras and lenses but without a PC it's mostly useless if you care about the end product. Mine is almost 4 years old and it hasn't skipped a beat yet.

      Ok heres an some help. Go into your bois change the clock speed of the you cpu/ram in increments untill it crashes. Then what you do is reset the bios (Take out the battery on the motherboard for 30 secconds and put it back in) And go to the settings right before you crashed. For your Graphics card use programns like MSI Afterburner, and its again trail and error.

    I've been keeping my pc going for 5 years. In fact, it's still doing fine with an upgrade of RAM that I bought on eBay. I'd say another year or two at most but, it's incredible value for money.
    4k is pointless but so is life so who cares. No doubts we will all need to keep jumping through hoops until people eventually realise it's only an improvement on huge screens. Sorry, I just had to throw my two cents in.

    I originally bought a 2.8 ghz, core 2 quad literally in 2006 or 2007 and used it till 2 years ago...the wife uses this machine today with a newer ssd and finds the machine still very functional and snappy. For myself, I upgraded and replaced with a intel setup 2.5 years ago and last year dumped that for a new ryzen 6100...love the chip for what I use my PC for...I do not know if I'll get 7 or 8 years out of it, but it is nice to grab something that may no longer be the fastest, but it's still nice to see it functional and a contender. So, perhaps when you finally make a big, new upgrade, you'll migrate to a thread ripper or something along those lines...nice video...and you had a pretty pumped setup back in the day...cheers.

    I have had the same broom for 20 years and it's just as good as the day I bought it. admittedly I have fitted 5 new heads and replaced the handle 3 times but it's the same great broom that I first brought home in 1997. sounds a bit daft doesn't it, but it sounds the same as your 7 year old PC that you say is the same one that you built in 2010 BUT you have swapped out the graphics card and added more RAM and SSDs. and now you have swapped the CPU and bundled it all into a new case, there's not much of the original PC left. just like my 30 YO broom eh?

    • @LeoInterVir
      @LeoInterVir 7 лет назад +4

      sydmichel which can be said of life. Your cells divide and die all the time, even brain cells. With all the changes that happen in your body, when do you stop being you? Were you ever really you to begin with?
      In this, the only thing to not change is the motherboard. Maybe it's an entirely different computer if that changes. Also he changed those parts gradually over time, just like the cells in your body. So if you are you, then this is still the same computer.

    I'm fine with 1080p, and I would probably still be running 1680x1050, if that monitor had not broken down. Especially when it comes to resolution, I don't quite see how the benefit outweighs the requirements anymore. The jump from 320x200 CGA to 640x480 VGA was nice, but 4k doesn't make all that much of a difference to me compared to full HD, neither does 144Hz, neither does HDR. And don't get me wrong, those things are all nice, but I can get on just fine without them.
    And except for screen resolution, computer development has slowed down significantly. A PC bought in '96 was outdated two or three years later, but this is not the case anymore today. This computer you have there could probably last me another 3 years. Of course, I do not stream or make youtube videos for an audience that may have the bestest screens on the market at all time and expects the content to look the part. :)

      Mark M Macbooks really differ in quality. In my experience they are really durable when you handle them carefully AND they don't have discrete GPUs. Because discrete GPUs really suffer from apples bad thermal management:
      -Radeon X1600 had more fails then usual
      -Nvidia Bug
      -Radeon 6xxx had more fails then usual

      It's a 2014 MacBook Pro Retina 15" A1398 11,2. Specs i7 4770HQ, 16gb ddr3, 256gb pci ssd, Intel Iris Pro GPU. I'm not afraid to tear it apart and replace anything that breaks on it. I have the motherboard schematic so I can fix any logic issues if it starts to fail. I will keep this laptop for as long as possible. At this point I'm getting frustrated with Sierra and dread upgrading to the next version that I know will just include more bugs and glitches. I'm going to upgrade to lubuntu as soon as I can get access to a fast enough internet connection.

    In 2012 I made my old socket 771 server into my gaming PC. it's still going strong, although I changed the CPU's in 2016 (dual socket btw) Also I changed my case into the Phantaks you have now (supports EATX)

    • @markm0000
      @markm0000 6 лет назад

      Seriously you're spending more on electricity to keep that old rust than replacing it with a core2 based system at the very least. The 771 platform is now entirely obsolete and considered a space heater. I'm not hating on your system, it's just not economically viable to keep turned on.

    • @drunkenpumpkins7401
      @drunkenpumpkins7401 6 лет назад +1

      I have still pretty great workloads. a core 2 based system can't really processes it well and a modern Pentium solution is also out of the question. At least I need a modern i5 4xxx or Ryzen 5 cpu to get the calculations afloat.

    • @rhuwyn
      @rhuwyn 6 лет назад

      Mark the 771 and the 775 are more or less equivalent sockets for server and desktop respectively. There are mods for using a 771 based CPU in 775 based boards...A core2 is not an upgrade it's a lateral move or a downgrade depending on where the CPU comes in in the span of the lifespan of the socket.

    This is the best video i have seen ever regarding how much time can you get out your PC, every other channel talks about upgrade and low buget gaming buut no one talks about buying a pc to last 6-8 years minimun like your pc did, i love introducing every one to PC gaming and quallity gaming and bugget comes handy but low buget is not for a pc that will last long and this video i will share like an example of how a good investment can be to buy a really good pc (not buyin the lastest i7, buying the best motherboard and colling system or like 16gb of ram in one stick instead of 4x4gb of ram even if 16 is more expensive, that one 16 stick will let you upgrade to 64 in the future even if ddr6 is out)

    Watching this video was major deja vu. I built my last pc in 2010 (just like you). I upgraded to the same Xeon CPU (just like you), I used the same exact case and motherboard (just like you), I have 24 GB ram (just like you). Difference is that I paid a used server part company $200 for my processor around 2015. So, up until this year I used it for everything and it has been more than adequate for all my needs. Most games I play are old ones like Age of Empires II and Unreal Tournament GOTY... I only built a new pc (May 2018) in order to be able to play Star Citizen which was unplayable due to CPU bottlenecking with ole' faithful. The 2010 built may be aged, but it's solid. It got me through my first years out of high school and all the way through first decade of my career!

This combo could run 4k with a better gpu not too much bottlenecking, don't forget it has triple channel ram. The only thing I really miss is decent sata 3 connections but overall it's a beast !
