still better than mine
mine can handle 720p its a hp its runs good
My laptop is a pendo notebook it runs roblox very well for its usually bad reputation Intel atom processor although some more intensive games take a very long time to load on roblox...
Chubbyemu I feel you being a bit harsh on this laptop now I don't have experience with AMD processors but I do know 4gb of RAM and a T7200 browse the web pretty well. Upgrading the ram may very well may smoothen you video playing experience.

Will desktop PCs ever be completely phased out?
- Not as long as PC gaming is a thing.
it could if those crazy laptops with i7 and 1080 did not cost 3-6 thousand dollars
theres even laptops with sli 1080 but its like $8000
After 2 years it seems totally possible. Cloud computing is solidifying more and more, and the average consumer devices are becoming more and more "internet" devices with little computational power. Even cloud gaming is starting to grow well. IMHO desktop PCs are going to be used only by enthusiasts or professionals in less than 10 years.

How dows someone get one free anyways? Where I live, in Mississippi I couldn't
I'm stuck with 512MB ram on my Inspiron 8500 and don't have a credit card to buy one online. I don't have a job and couldn't find one anywhere in person
Computing is getting the EA treatment.
Once again, such a mundane topic turned into a conversation about a much larger issue. Brought to you by the most talented human on the internet. I love your content man, keep it up.
Do more tech videos like this
The Computer I am using right now, MacBook Air 11 2012, still is fine today. A MacBook Pro like that would probably easily browse the internet in 2021
Its 2024 and it still could, especially if it had an ssd.
Not sure if you'll ever see this and I know you're 95% medical videos, but your tech stuff is really cool - chill, factual, interesting. Always looking for more of this :)
Ah, old cheap computers.. Until 2013 I was playing minecraft on a 2000 computer with an AMD Duron and a GeForce4 MX440... That graphics card scored a 4 on that 3D test for that benchmarking software... Minecraft with a steady 5-12 FPS... oh yeah...
That wasn't cheap when new. It was flat out...really expensive....when new. But, it's actually a 2002 computer from the sound of those specs. The Geforce4 wasn't out in 2000.
The funny thing is you could've probably made Minecraft run better with mods and could've probably downloaded a virus scanner to see if anything is limiting the performance of your computer. Also uninstall all that bloatware and crap that is regularly installed on laptops, especially old one's. Could've probably increased performance by a huge amount.
Johnus Smittinis
I was gaming on a cheap pc from 2004.With amd sempron , ati radeon 9600 , 512mb ram and 80gb storage
The gaming was limited as hell
I could run diablo 1 and 2 and those 1990s titles with 15fps
Minecraft well...it runs with 8 fps
Awesome, another tech video. Ahhh, nostalgic windows start-up sounds. Brilliant :)
Put Linux on it.
Yes
What linux?
Lubuntu would work well

Next video: Lubuntu vs WinXP performance on my free laptop from 2008
Hell yeah. Also other distros comparision vs xp would be awesome to see
It still wouldn't be the best but I bet it would certainly be a bit better, and possibly even smoothly handle 720P video playback on Linux. It would be interesting to see for sure. I think Puppy Linux would be the better choice for something like this, a few versions only use 80-100MB of RAM to start up and idle.
You could definitely run Lubuntu and Firefox on it.
Lubuntu uses about 300MB of RAM whenever I'v used it, which considering this Laptop dosen't have any more then 512MB installed, might be a bit hard to run Firefox on. Firefox uses about 250MB minimum with a single page open. I know because I used to have a P4 system yet back in 2012.
There is no much difference actually. Lubuntu requires less RAM, but web bowers are still limited by the old processors. We have a 2006 HP nc8000 with fully upgraded RAM and Lubuntu, but the wireless lan driver is buggy, and the browsers struggle with modern websites,
I was using a fully-speced 2008 MacBook Pro Unibody until a week ago. It is now 9 years old and works like a dream. I recently changed the battery, now it has a battery life of roughly 6 hours, even games like World of Tanks run okay, web browsing is, of course, perfect, connecting a 1440p is possible and video editing up to 1440p is acceptable.
I think, spending money on a maximum configuration Apple laptop was totally worth it. I sold it for 465$. It was a great machine.
You got $465 for that? Impressive! I don't think it is worth that much though, as 2012 models go for around that price nowadays.
da stumer It was practically brand-new :) Not a single scratch...
Apple laptops are just shit in general.
Always go desktop/PC for performance. Macbooks are just for the brand, and I'm honestly surprised you got $500 for a 2008 Macbook that would roughly go for less then $200 today.
Stop hating on Apple and enjoy what they are doing for consumers.
+DoubleJayPotato
Everything they've done (2009 and up) is negative towards the consumer.
That...was far deeper than simply looking at an old laptop. I need to sit down
Hi everyone! Another video that might interest you: I Built This Desktop For $1360 in 2010. Here's How It Holds Up In 2017. ruclips.net/video/BWgbzJPWMz4/видео.html. thanks for stopping by!
Chubbyemu do a upgrade video on the 2008 free laptop put a ssd and more ram and windows 10 and maybe upgrade to a core 2 duo it should run better and it would make a great video series
Chubbyemu I have a hp laptop from 2008 that I rebuilt in early 2012. I have Windows 7 and was wondering what's a good benchmark to use to see how effective my laptop is.
This laptop is getting Nmaped........
I've never owned a screen bigger than 1366x768 or 1280x800, and I bought a new laptop this year.
screen size and resolutions aren't same thing
Agreed. 2008 was the golden days
And after 2010 everything went downhill due to the "internet" generation. Honestly fuck this generation.
I bought an Asus UX305 in 2016 for 699 Euro. Core i7 6500U CPU, 8GB RAM, bronze/golden aluminium body, 13.3" 400Nits IPS-color calibrated display, 12 hours of batterylife and 7-9 hours of batterylife at full brightness. Just 699 Euro, fully new. It's also only 12mm thick (yeah, extremely extremely thin) and doesn't overheat and during regular use like chrome with 50 tabs + office + Eclipse (program for coders) it's running fanless. SO yeah....2016 is pretty neat then! ONLY 699 EURO!!!
You know the more I look back on it 2000-2008 (maybe stretch it to 10 or 11 for some cases) were the golden days, it was the perfect mix of how the 90's were and how things are today, the equilibrium.
No the people born, society and the consumer market all literally have just gone to the shitter since 2010-2011
SlackPie/Mystosia true. Even to phones:( No 3.5mm jack, no sdcard slot. They are just sacrificing the important stuff to make technology thin and thinner. Tbh how thin the wanna make it lol.
When you hear that Windows xp startup sound
Still remember the first laptop I bought back in 2003 for college. It weight over 3kg, didn't have wifi and included a 3.5" floppy drive with a 20gb hard disk. That said, the keyboard on it was one of the best typing experiences I've ever felb on a laptop to date!
My school uses these and they said they moved "fast"
Taylor Jones one time my school used the cheapest windows 7 laptops for us 4th graders, and said “omG if You KEeP SpamINg The Keys It’ll SlOw iT down!!1?!,!”
Pei Laz i didnt ask but ok
Taylor Jones it moves fast if they are taken care of. In a school it’s going to be slow when there are kids trying to play unblocked games and getting viruses
Your videos are awesome! Keep it up man!
Why doesn't he get enough views?
Probably because most of his videos are about dieting, not tech

At last I 100% agree with the arguments you made in this video :)
Naz Dhillon Well I am a student in tech who happens to be interested in medicine!.
Old Pentium Desktop from 1999 lasted me 12 years.
Mid range laptop from 2013 lasted me 3 years.
I definitely do see a problem with these lower end devices being capable of less and charging more
Dude, what an amazing video! Thank you so much for having made it
I wish they'd make laptops that were nearly fully customizable, like desktops, but with a laptop casing. Everything standardized, so you could replace anything or do some maintenance without needing to study "laptop surgery" for the specific model.
Well there's Framework for this niche.
It's a company that aims for fully costumizable laptops
2008 were there good old days.. Had a similar laptop back in the day, recently decided to upgrade it for fun. swapped the slow hdd for a ssd, put in 4 gb of ram and a dual core athlon cpu and it could run windows 10 just as well as a new budget laptop.
Put Linux Mint, Manjaro or Solus on it and it will perform much better than Windows ever did. Laptop will be snappy and fast like new.
I have a laptop from 2015, so something that I would consider a "modern day" laptop. It was a Dell Latitude e5440. It still has many of the ports that this laptop has. I still have VGA on this laptop, It has an SD card slot, and the battery is still removable. In my opinion this is the best laptop that I will ever have.
Such a great video. The content was well thought out and put together. Keep it up mate. Subscribed and looking forward for your upcoming videos.
I love these tech vids from you
Great video! I really like these tech videos.
I really appreciate and thoroughly enjoyed the way you out this vid together. That said, I'm a little surprised there was no mention of Linux, given how knowledgeable you are in a variety of areas.
Linux addresses many of the concerns you brought up, even if it fails the popularity challenge.
Wonderful video :) You always have such well thought out and good edited/scripted content. One of my favorite channels!! Thank you.

I love how by the end of your videos, you start talking about the larger issues in technology. This is the kind of quality discourse that should be perpetuated online. Good job :D
Just one year later (in hospital due to extended back problems), I asked my wife to go pick up a notebook for me, It was 2009 and the PC was a Dell Inspiron dual core 1545.. It runs Windows10 effortlessly... changed to SSD of course, but it is no hassle at all.
I found your video to be very enjoyable, even if sometimes not exactly right. Subscribed, thumbs up.
Install Linux with LXDE (Lubuntu, Mint, or manjaro) to revive your ancient machine.. Try it, its great!
I speak from personal experience reviving my own Acer Aspire 4810T (Single core Intel Centrino ULV Processor 1.4GHz)
And i thought i had it bad when i had a Centrino laptop with a Pentium M...(Basically a severely powerd down pentium 4)
I can build a PC but I have no money to build one :(
Norinaga i can build a PC but my house doesn't Wi-Fi. am watching this using my phone and mc donalds Wi-Fi parents refuse to accept Wi-Fi and the technology.
Why don't you build someone else's PC? Get some money from it, then you'll be able to build your own ^^
Great discussion on the technology industry and where its going. Nice change from the usual tech reviews that are all out there. Good job on the story telling! Enjoyed reminiscing about the "golden days" :) Subscribed

My labtop is an i3 from 2010, I bought a 5G network adapter for 10$ and I can play any new game at epic settings via cloudgaming for 8$/month.
Did you modify it for graphics
Linux is the future of computing. Linux already dominates pretty much every area of computing except desktop and laptop which is only due to lack of apps and games available only for Windows.
While your current medically focused content is certainly top notch and holds incredible educational value, I'd be more than glad to see occasional returns to tech vids like this or even ones like "your feelings don't matter"
Amazing video and amazing ending! Keep up the good work man!
Linux plz. Installed Lubuntu on a IBM Thinkpad T61 and it runs great.
Yeah PCs are a lot more powerful in proportion to 10 years ago. Nowadays, a GPU like the 1050 Ti can run many games at 60 fps ultra or high. A 1070 can run most games at well over 100 FPS. 10 years ago, the highest-tier GPUs (SLI 8800 Ultra for example) couldn't run Crysis at a stable 60 FPS in ultra. Computers have caught up to software by a long run.
thunderbird51953 yea today there are big resolutions like 1440 and 2160 now to reduce framerate
I want to see a 1050 ti run latest AAA titles 60 fps on Ultra.
well, my 7970, which has about the same performance as a 1050 Ti OCed a bit, achieves that pretty well on my 1680x1050 Display. In BF1 i still have 80 FPS most of the time at high-ultra settings. And 100% Ultra settings are more marketing then really visible... You can compare it yourself, there are many comparison videos, most people wont even recognize the difference even with a direct comparison
@@skeletalforce9673 Crysis was Not optimized that well
At the time you wrote this comment, a 1060 6gb was considered one of the best GPU’s all around, only beaten by the 1070. In 2019, it’s one of the best ‘budget’ GPU’s; it can still run most modern games at 60fps on high, but this time next year, it will likely be pretty much obsolete
This video made me subscribe. Very well put Sir!
I still use a mid range 2008 laptop daily and it works flawlessly for everything I need to do, browses the web and plays videos with no lag, word processing etc. I did factory reset it a few years ago but its not to much trouble to transfer anything I need to a USB drive.

Hey great video man! It's always fun to look back at how hardware was back in the day. Your commentary for the most part is great as your pronunciation is very clear and precise. One bit of constructive criticism is that sometimes it seems like the background music is sort of competing with your voice. Other than that, I enjoyed the video.
I still have my Vostro 1000. Owned it since it was brand new don't remember what year I got it though. Stopped using it around early 2009 though. Still works perfectly fine today, other than its beat up pretty bad as it spent a few years as an auto bodyshop computer.
Add more ram, upgrade it to the best processor it supports, and add an SSD
Adding more ram won't make it much faster if at all, you can't change the CPU it's directly connected to the main board, and the 5400RPM drive is the least of the bottlenecks. :/
Shimon Levy Yes, there are many models of laptops and manufacturers that make it possible to upgrade CPUs in their laptops, however in this particular model shown in the video the CPU is non-replacable.
It can be replaced actually, I've had enough Dells in my past that I know this for sure
The best mobile AMD processor from 2007 (this model is NOT from 2008) would not be that great, either, but if you can get it for almost free, well, why not. I agree about the RAM, since it's so cheap, but not the SSD. The main bottleneck here is the insufferable integrated graphics, and there's nothing to do about it, so throwing an SSD into that piece of junk would be a waste. You would watch the machine boot faster, but very little else.
Skeleton 11223 at least it's not like windows 7 on a 512mb ram system. Win 7 on that is painful to use.
my father's friend was so lucky !
he got (for free in job) :
1. 12 GB Of ddr4 ram
2. intel i7 77700k
3.5 gb graphics for artificial intelligence
4. mechanical mouse for 21:9
5. 4k resolution for extra depth in detail
my first video i have ever watched of his and a subbed right after, nice.
I had this model of laptop as my main daily driver from 2007 until 2014! With the Athlon 64 x2 TK-53, 4GB RAM (unofficially supported), 250GB 7200RPM disk and Windows Vista Basic/Windows 7 Professional and now has a copy of Windows 10 Pro installed. Fantastic device!
when will you build a new pc? :D I really liked your video about the 7 years old pc
soon. give me some time to put all of it together
Chubbyemu upgrade the 2008 laptop it will support a dual core athlon plus 8gb of ddr2 ram plus an SSD at that point you can throw windows 10 on it and give a big middle finger to obsolescence!
David Johnson Not that easy
+David Johnson
Upgrading the CPU is impossible without asking the manufactor about it, the majority of the time they used specialized CPU's for there laptops (not entirely sure about this one featured in the video though)
The RAM, and SSD are totally possible though, but I question whether or not Windows 10 will run smoothly on it considering not even XP could run smoothly.
Something like Windows 8.1 would be far better with how light weight it is.
Windows XP? Oh, you mean the *Meme Machine*
Man...that was a beautiful video...very enlightening
That was a great video! It really got me thinking about the future of technology, and about making better decisions when buying consumer electronics in the future. Also, I have an IBM ThinkPad from 2007 (I forgot the specs), and it actually works _okay_ on today's Internet; not a marvel, but surprisingly good. 🖒

My 5 year old computer is still amazingly holding up to this this day, it somehow keeps up with most games and applications and isn't slowing down at all, it isn't even an advanced computer. I opened it up and 75% of it was empty space and the rest the actual computer (most of it being usb and disk drives). All in all computers are amazing
Nice video, i totally agree... And my ThinkPAd T60 from late 2006 is still holding up :)
Aswell as my 2012 desktop computer
Install Linux Fedora workstation - and make compare movie.
Low-end desktop PCs are going away, not gaming/enthusiast desktop PCs. These are for high-end gaming and content production.
You should've compared Dell with Dell, not Dell with Apple. Apple is shit anyways, always removing I/O from their products.
Danilo Margarido dell is an unreliable piece of shit. I’ve been using it for a year and the fucking power jack came loose and broke. Out of all the things that can break, that fucking breaks.

You really should have given this laptop an SSD and a RAM upgrade and then judge it....these machines were designed to be upgradable after all.
Love the video! I started my career with Compaq Computers in 1999, which later got bought out by HP. A desktop computer bought from HP in 2005 with my employee discount is still being used by my Aunt. She complains daily about how slow it is. Haha
Nice video! I'm new here, but I enjoyed this video and I subscribed. Also, I agree with what you said.
