    I have a challenge I could use some training and advice on: I've never owned a dog but I am new to farm life. I would like to train a dog to help me. The ranchers in the area have a policy that if your dog is on their property or if a dog nips at a deer or horse or any farm animal then they get put down and they're seen as bad dogs. This is very common out here in the country where I live. I just want to be a responsible dog owner and make sure I don't come home to my ranch pup gone.

    People need to be educated when it comes to balanced dog training so we can end the force free bullshit propaganda. Reward the good behavior and punish the wrong behavior. It's not that complicated.

    I love this. Not all dogs need this type of training but like you said the larger more powerful dogs for sure I need it I’m gonna try doing this with my Border Collie and I’m gonna try the Matt game, so what do I do? I just put it on one hour or two and tell him to go to the mat which he already knows the mat and I push the button and then when he’s on the mat I let the button go could you help me? Thank you.

    I'm very good at leash corrections.. however, in more recent times, I've become aware that some people see it and think it's cruel or abusive.. How would you handle a situation where someone confronts you or calls to report you for giving leash corrections? I'm so afraid of having my dog taken, or being arrested for simply not allowing my dog to go charge a little kid for example.

      I've started using a Gentle Leader and actually it's been pretty great for walking... BUT, there's no way to fully "pop" the leash like on a collar, for a properly leveled correction, or even to hold her back in a high stress situation. I don't want to whip her face around from the nose, THAT I feel is cruel..I want to correct her by the base of the head. Plus I wouldn't trust the Gentle Leader to hold my dog should she realize she's far stronger than the cheap nylon and plastic. We use biothane otherwise..

      @Manka Every purely-positive trainer says to just offer them treats.. Not every dog wants treats all the time. Not every dog wants to play in a high stress environment either, they don't want the toy. I train dogs but what Im not doing when they start lunging for another dog aggressively, is offer them treats for it.

      @@arnoldlayne9469 you have to just accept the fact that people will judge it. I've yet to be confronted but I know people don't like it. I'd just rather have strangers talk trash about me and be able to train my dog. Anyone who knows anything about real dog training will know what you're doing.

      Leash corrections are practiced by trainers and behavioralists. A reasonable leash pop is totally okay.
      It's no more cruel than leaving them untrained where they could potentially harm someone or themselves and have to be put down.

    We always used a long leash for call back, in Australia it is still something rural people do, not for control, but for the dogs safety, a good call back stops you loosing your dog and stops them getting hurt, you only need to do it a few times and they know

    Any advice for a dog that doesn't engage with you at all on a walk? It's a problem I have with my dog. He's 8-10 years old. There's no engagement with the person walking him, doesn't even listen to you when you speak. He's completely in his own world and it's like you're just something there being a nuisance holding him back

    it is a bit abusive, look at the body language of the dogs when you tug on their leashes like that. and to what end... simply to get them to walk in the manner you want them to? You're an ego maniac

      I disagree to what you said. I used to think like you until I have dogs for 20 years. I now have Belgium shepherd, Pitbull and retriever and I’m only 5 ft tall. Dogs look at you so that you can lead them. Look at you meaning they treat you as the leader they will respect and u can easily correct them, like what Eric did. If I walk my dogs out, with one single mistake of I did not correct their misbehaviour, misbehaviour will just pile up and they will start to do whatever things they want. End up with chaos and pulling and chasing. So I agree with Eric method after so many years of raising big dogs.

    • @jeegee-cx7ss
      @jeegee-cx7ss Год назад +1

      I understand all that. Following your logic, do you agree with circuses using the methods they use to tame lions and make lions do what they want them to do? If not, why not. They're 'big' animals, right? And by your logic, and Eric's logic, the bigger the animal, the 'firmer'(which means crueler) methods you can use to 'discipline' it. Assuming you're a person with similar assumptions of right and wrong as me, you'd probably agree that circuses having lions is just a bad thing all round. I have this similar view with big dogs. If you do not own enough land where the dog can roam freely(which takes away the need to walk it on a leash), then you're just not the right person for the dog. Their behaviour isn't 'misbehaviour', by the way... it's you deciding it is, it's bad behaviour relative to your own personal desires. The dog just wants to run around and get rid of some energy. It doesn't want some human being tugging on it's leash and ruining it's excitement. Even the way you're labeling this is wrong, the dog isn't now doing what you want because it sees you as a leader and wants to obey(it clearly would rather run around, evidently), it's doing what you want because it feels pain when it doesn't do what you want. It's avoiding pain. If you disagree with this... then why is pain used as a method to train the dog to do what you want it to do? People tend to reframe things to make things sound more pleasant, or moral... but that's all it is, reframing of reality to make things sound nicer.

      He trains aggressive dogs.
      The framework of your opinions seem to stem from an overwhelmed view of reality, which I sympathize with. It helps to step back and look at each situation separately from the next, and take in only the information as pertains to the current situation in front of you. For eg. This situation in the video at first had me, as an empath, assessing the need for this level of discipline in these dogs. After gathering more info I realised it seems harsh at first but the results in the long run are more beneficial to the dog. *Dogs need (and thrive from) that behavioural stability.*
      Your points on circus animals do not have anything to do with this video or situation.
      Trying to cramp all the worlds animal problems in one opinion as you've done will only lead to overwhelm in yourself. Please be kind to yourself in that regard, it only leads to feelings of frustration and helplessness. There are avenues to express these opinions where they will be most constructive. (I sense you feel things deeply though so I understand your worries, just to be clear. ♡)
