That is a truly unique, interesting, and amazing restoration! I was blown away by what you were able to do. When i saw the tang was fully corroded away I didnt think you were going to be able to salvage nearly as much as you did. The fact that you saved the makers mark and made an awesome knife is a true credit to your skill and diligence. My hat if off to you sir!
@@FFD_RestorationsI'm so pleased that my modest comment made you happy! Each and every one of your videos make me happy, so if I can return that favor even a little that means so much to me. Thank you Boris, for everything you do! You are a true inspiration, and an amazing talent.
Hi again, and I have to say you have done a fantastic job again, I particularly like the copper idea of the handle, makes up for the missing parts really well, especially with the original scales and you have sharpening blades down to a tee now, that is wickedly sharp, really good work yet again. One point is I don't think that is a Japanese knife, on an old knife and anything of a traditional design it would have a through or hidden tang and it would be held onto the handle with wax and possibly a bamboo pin, they would construct the handle and then fill the tang hole with molten wax and then push the tang into the molten wax, that made the tang water tight and also made it so it is very easy to remove the handle with just hot water, what I believe you have is an old Chinese knife, many are and were very similar to Japanese knives blade wise but often the rest of the construction was quite different, but the way to know would be to take it to your local Chinese restaurant and ask them about the writing, either way you have rescued it and made it useful again, congrats on another fine job
Hello friend, I appreciate that very much! Great point right there. That makes a lot of sense. I have purchased this knife from a Japanese seller who advertised it as a Japanese knife. Plus it was sent from Hong Kong. I haven't researched much about the knife itself and conclude to trust the information that I had at the time. Nice suggestion, they would probably look at me like I'm crazy. Imagine I go into a restaurant wearing 100 years old clothes and holding a knife in my hand 😅. Thanks again for taking time to share your knowledge! Cheers
You never cease to amaze me, I don’t know if I would ever have considered this knife for restoration, but that’s me, obviously not you, the knife came out beautifully, excellent job on bringing it back to life, thanks for the video, I enjoyed watching.
I have to admit, it was not easy 😅 The most difficult challenge so far. It took me way more time than usual but at the end I'm glad I did it. Thank you for waiting and being patient. I appreciate your kind and supportive words 🙏 Stay safe!
Wonderful restoration Boris. It is truly a joy to watch you display your range of skills turning something, that most would throwaway, back into a beautiful and functional item. Thank you for the upload.
You obviously have a massive skill set to pull off that knife transformation!! Your mastery of human powered tools is amazing and impressive!!! The treadle powered rotary tool was quite innovative. The final result shows an absolutely stunning knife! You were able to save most of the original pieces. The previous owner seemed to be skilled in baling wire and tape. That knife never had it so good!! Well done sir!! Thanks for sharing your work with us.
Thank you so much for your incredibly kind words! I truly appreciate your thoughtful recognition of the craftsmanship involved in the knife transformation. It's heartening to know that you enjoyed the details, especially the treadle powered rotary tool innovation. Your enthusiasm motivates me to keep pushing the boundaries of my skills. I'm curious to hear if you have any personal experiences with restoring or transforming items. Have you ever taken on a similar project, or is there a particular craft that fascinates you?

I appreciate your positive feedback. Out of curiosity, are there specific features or details about the knife that stood out to you?

Great restoration of that Japanese knife!! I was thinking when that tang was broken to maybe weld or forge a piece back on, but that would ruin the temper in that great blade. Like the way you shortened it and made the brass handle under the wood to keep that large handle👍

What does leather do when sharpening a knife?
It removes the steel burl that is on the edge after the sharpening. If you have a chance try it, you will see huge difference in sharpness 😉
