I really don't understand people bitching about the 3cyl engine and it's sound.... Listen to it!!! It sounds like a freaking 6cyl!!! I love it
I think its more the fact that most people associate 3 cylinders with motorcycles, not cars. Also they're badly balanced engines, much worse than a 4 cyl so from a technical POV they're a backward step in a car. Their only saving grace is less internal friction and possibly induction losses than a 4 cyl.
In Europe mini-cars like Suzuki had 3 cyl engines for ages. You're right about the balancing issue, but the have balance-axels in the engine the take care of that. The heavy flywheel concerns me more...
We all wan't bigger engines and more cylinders, but we also wan't a better world. Ford at least is trying.. Others are going te follow

This 3 cylinder engine fad seems like the dual mass flywheel nonsense we had a decade ago - seemed like a good idea on a white board but in practice the things fell apart. These engines will have highly stressed components so I reckon their longevity will suffer as a result. Which in the end means car scrapped earlier which is hardly a win for the enviroment.
3cyl on a bike is a fking dream, just listen to the triumph daytona/street triple.

I swear this 3 cylinder engine sounds like a BMW M3 / M4 when it's revving from 4.000 to 5.500 rpm. At least from headphones perspective ;)

In Brazil, Fiest has 130hp and engine sounds is very similary, and limited 190km/h.

Really like the sound of the new Fiesta ST, and 140mph+ is not bad considering it not had a Remap yet.

I have a 2014 ST and had it to 145 mph at 6200 rpm. What a fun car to drive. I would have bought the new one if it were offered here in the USA, but Ford only gives Europe and Australia all the Great Fords. I was lucky to get my 2014 Fiesta ST. It has many Visual & HP modifications. People ask me and give me complements on it’s looks, it’s different than most of the cookie cutter designs these days and you don’t see one at every intersection like all the other plan Jane Cars & SUV’s.
If you're wondering why the manufacturer top speed is higher it's because they do 2 top speed runs: One driving in the same direction with the wind and one against the wind and after that they average the numbers

What I think is more important is the way the Fiesta accelerates in the part where you drive off the Autobahn to drive back the other direction. It's just so easy how it gains speed :O

Peter Lustig I have a US 2014 ST Version and the first thing I did was change the rear motor mount, it’s a big flaw in their design as well as the focus ST. It sounds like the engine is coming through the firewall. Once replaced it actually let you launch better and pulls better when you shift.

It was decided early on in the USA to build somewhat different highways than in Europe. When I was in the USA, I understood why the word Autobahn was integrated into American.
