9 years later, this video was one of the reasons I bought a Fiesta ST. I’ve been loving every minute of owning it!
I did the same
Im thinking about buying one now, do you have any advice?
@@tonigrepo498do research, I got a st2 has everything st3 has minus sat nav. Worth getting a immobiliser as they’re prolific for thefts (2/3) st/st1 seem fine.
I filled up yesterday so Bournemouth and back, around 130/140 miles in a 1/3 or 1/4 of a tank.
But if you put your foot down it swallows fuel like a fish
I did the same just few days ago - I cannot even describe how much fun do you get from this little rocket. It's mindblowing..! From now on, an ordinary ride to work has become extraordinary - goverment should create some kind of CarOffice :D Greetings from Poland!
I did the same back in 2014 and still can't think of a better hot hatch for the price. Feel like collecting 1 in every color.
"Changing gear is a form of self expression that I'm being denied" -Richard Hammond
In a few years some mainstream cars will have the automatic gearbox as standard equipment with no manual option; 8 or 9-speed gearboxes are more efficient and effective than 6-speed or even 7-speed manual counterparts.
FContreras85 Yes, they are more efficient. They are also boring as hell.
TheSamRSS ii
In a car like this, a dull flappy-paddle-gearbox is probably not the best fit. But yeah... talking about sense... where do these cars make sense if you consider what driving in the real world looks like for the very, very, very most part?
I for one more often catch myself thinking "I wish I had a torque converter" than "I whish I had more power / more traction / more grip."

Well this decision is easy for us who live in the states.
fishkluch but, do you think Americans would buy it if the Clio and the 208 was sell in usa ?
Bernard Pourav For the uniqueness of the brand alone I bet they would. I've heard of many Americans wishing they would sell the Renault brand in the US.
Bernard Pourav I think we very well might. Part of it could be due to its uniqueness but it does seem like a very valid competitor in performance to the Fiesta ST too. Personally I would consider it if I had the option although I would have to do more research and drive them both before deciding. I am considering getting a fiesta st or focus st in several years once I'm out of college.
Our cars are to small for USA car's market, and too " diesel fuel "
Bernard Pourav The American market is actually now going for small eco cars to save $ on fuel.
The problem with Diesel is the bias it has created due to it's history. People think that they haven't improved over the last many years when the truth is that they're better than hybrids.
Maybe the availability and price is also a bias factor. Even thought it's cheaper because you will run longer with a tank of Diesel than petrol, the people just see the prices.
2:36 "I have got a G diagram... of my G" still the best thing I have ever heard from the hamster

It's such an underrated phrase
This episode is why my dad got a Fiesta ST. It really is all Hammond says it is. It’s an absolute dream to drive.
If you're gonna tune it, then yes, so many parts available AND you can trust it'll still be solid after the >40hp bump
Remap my 2016 208GTi with stock parts, put out 225hp... BUT! on a summer's day? (20c+) reached intake temps of >50c, so no way was that boost stable. Though, the 2016 engine (208THP) has full forged bottom end, will take 270 and more, just search forums. Comkotes is experienced & reliable, running 250+ on 2013 engine. Check 'LLF', his '13 engine 208 taking Golf R's, BMWs, Porsche's 😂... hilarious
I've just bought a Fiesta ST and it's awesome. You really need to drive one to really understand but they are to a driver what a Spitfire is to a pilot! You strap it on like it's a part of you! Seriously incredible car. I smile every time I drive it and I drive it often 😈😈😈
+Chris Simpson Get the MP215 upgrade, engine roll restrictor and the quickshifer. All together it will cost under 1k and the car will feel amazing to drive :D
You would need to spend a LOT more money to find another car with an equally good power curve and gear change as that.
+Chris Simpson good choice pal :-) lovely car!
+vincesplc thanks bro :-) yes I've been driving the beast for a few months now and just today I out paced a Shelby Cobra on the highway through traffic 😈 haha this car is a phenomenon. I love driving it! You're a fellow owner or should I say believer? 😨
+Chris Simpson Agreed! It bothers me that they don't bother to mention that the Fiesta has an Overboost feature, which basically leaves it on equal terms with the other two cars - at 197BHp, although only from 3rd gear onwards.
+-OcraM- Just Mountune it and it'll run 212bhp and still costs less than the Clio with warranty still in tact 😁
I often find topgear reviews hopelessly based in a world where money is no object, so it is quite refreshing to hear Hammond making a big point of the price difference between the two. Even the likes of Chris Harris often breezes over such a point. People claiming Corsa VXR n'ring edtn's, golf gti's and BMW 135i's are faster or better are totally missing the point. These all cost significantly more like for like. The fact that the fiesta could give any one of these a run for their money down a tight and twisty b-road at a fraction of the cost is nothing short of amazing. Well done Ford.

Probably to make the manual enthusiasts get the the more expensive Megane RS
Pretty dumb thinking manual is better than auto. Try to buy modern Bugatti in manual LOL or Ferrari or Lambo... All latest hyper cars are auto. So old people or people that thinks they are super drivers moan about automatic gearbox. Imagine Formula 1 driver "I prefer manual that gives me more control" LOL.
@@tomhell9073 not dumb at all. If you dont understand why it is better then you should move away from cars.
either way, why flappy paddles are a thing is because technology is going forward and that is what it brought to racing. Big manufacturers cant go back to manual now cant they? they gotta develop stuff further and sell it, and thanks to you, they are actually managing to please someone with that flappy crap hahha
I guess you guys just dont know how to heel'n'toe properly xD
@@Saugusari11 i guess you never drove a proper fast car. Try it. I always loved manual and been sceptical about automatic gearbox. Since I drove Nissan gtr I understand that automatic gearbox is a must have on fast pace driving. No rally car have manual gearbox. Automatic gearbox is quicker means you can drive faster. But I understand that on small cheap hatchback people want manual hence the price they pay for the car...
@@tomhell9073 No one moans about an auto or manual being "better" because the fact is that double clutch auto boxes are impossibly quicker than a manual. Everyone knows they're "better" but a manual is more involving and more fun.

I would take the little lion 208 just because I love the 205 I wish I had both
I bet you see the 205 line on the new 208. :)
I LOVE that Fiesta, the looks, the interior, the feel of the thing, an epic piece of engineering in my opinion, but I can also see why someone would get the other two, that Peugeot in particular, I wouldn't turn that down in a hurry, but the geeky stuff on the Renault is a bit much for me, it's just a bit much for what it is

+Bailey Nguyen then you have not been a really car guy for very long because ford has been on top for decades ,, and if you were a car guy you would have already known this ,,, from the cobras of 50 years ago to todays fastest mustang at 208 miles an hour ,, they have been fast for decades and yes they are going faster with less today the eco boost is very good , even their truck with the eco boost at 360 horse 8 speed turbo is very good
+lesterclaypool1
Agree with that. Although in the UK we dong get the mustangs. But classics like sierra cosworth from the 80s escort cosworth from the 90s, as well as modern classics like Focus RS shows they have been making great cars alot cheaper than most rivals for years
+Bailey Nguyen companies are jealous about the Ford ecoboost engine a 1.0 liter ecoboost engine whit 280 bhp while other car companies needs a 1.6 or 2 liter turboboost engine to compare that Ford is not all about bhp but handling cornering and traction is for Ford more important than anything else

@@ciaranhill2491 why do you care?

More boring than a Renault Clio and a Peugeot 208???
I've been buying and selling cars for almost a decade because they always start to bore me after a few months. That didn't happen to this Fiesta, it is brilliant. There are many modifications I have done to improve performance and handling, but what really increases the joy of driving for next to nothing was a stiffer lower motor mount and a short shifter.
Although i love the Fiesta, if i could, i'd buy the Clio just to play around with it.
To me Clio looks more like a girl car. The shape of the car is too "curvy and smooth". The Fiesta just a bit more aggressive.
***** Eh, the old Clio was more like a girl car, now the design is pretty nice, but i also find the Fiesta more appealing to the eye.
The Clio is one of the best-looking hatches produced. The lines and aggressive front spoiler finish it off well :)
@@ActionJotaPe weird, I think the fiesta looks like the girliest of them all and Clio looks more masculine
Bob Jones I thought the same too. Those little pointy headlamps on the fiesta makes it look like if it was a eyelash

it was coming to NA. It did as a 197hp 5 doors. April 2014, I was buying my first new car. 7 years later, that thing still drives like a charm and it's being repainted. This video is what made me choose the Fiesta ST.
Did you do the repaint because of the bad factory paint/rust issues or just to freshen it up? How much was the paint job?

Peugeot 208 first !
And i agree for the poor gearbox of renault.
In fact he took more pleasure with the 208 Gti and go harder with her than the Ford...
Let's take them on small road or a lap time with the STIG !
Picked up my USDM Fiesta ST two weeks ago.. easily the most fun vehicle I have ever driven - it's a blast
I don't know about drag races and all that 0-60 milliseconds difference... But the fact is 208 is more agile in practice, good power in low revs, good suspension, etc.
Some nice heel toe action from Hammond in the 208
When comparing cars in the same class, the Ford Fiesta is better hands down. It can do it all. An everyday driver, hot hatch, corners the best, and so what if its got 20 hp less than the other two, you are not driving in a straight line everyday unless your on the tracks. Styling, handling, and the driving experience, the Fiesta ST is the winner.
MT did a comparison. They said, " While the Fiesta ST is fun to drive, I leave the stability control on. Why? Because I don't feel confident." Confidence is a big part of the driving experience. The ST just isn't confidence inspiring.
Guy Forget It's actually got 197hp...pretty much all the time. It wont turn down to 180hp until 20 seconds of WOT...which gets reset when you lift to shift, so basically the only way you can hit overboost cut is in 5th gear trying for top speed.
Sparatan117 That was the FOCUS ST. The Fiesta ST has confidence in spades.
And for £599 plus labor you can get the mountune pack with puts the power up to 212 bhp anyway and doesn't even effect the warranty.
I wonder how many Ford has sold of these though. I cant remember Top Gear liking and recommending an affordable car so much like they have with this one?
I purchased the new Renault Clio RS myself, the fiesta ride was way to punishing for everyday use. And the automatic was fine, it was very fast and does not deserve the criticism it gets.
And the wait was 6 months to get a fiesta at the time, Renault could get me a car under 2 weeks.
Guy Forget I don't agree when you say styling but your opinion is welcomed. if you look clearly you will see that the Clio is by far the most beautiful of the 3 and better still followed by the Peugeot and don't get me wrong there is absolutely nothing wrong with styling of the Fiesta it's got a mean character and does that very well but cute Not at all for me. the interiors on the other two are much more superior too. I would agree on the handling factor and yes the Fiesta does that well but will it be able to do the same with a bit of the push of the power or horse power to match the other two don't know hopefully will happen in future. for me I'd choose the Clio RS and not even race with those two but be rather naive in looking for trouble with bigger machines
I have a Focus ST (from 2020) and what Richard says about corners is truth even for the focus. You just corner it flat, it has loads of grip. I just love it
I own both, Focus ST 2019 and Fiesta ST 2016. Fiesta beats Focus heavily when it comes to grip and general car handling. But there is something in that 2.3l in Focus (I run it at 330hp) that blows my mind every time.
The mk4 Focus ST is not a good car. Decent engine but slow enough revving, i expected much better. I mapped mine with a dreamscience map but those maps are just for traffic light posers because out on the glorious twisty bumpy backroads where i live the intercooler couldn't keep up over a long thrash and then it was awful with lag coming in when it was too hot. I went back to stock as it was better to tolerate the somewhat disappointing stock engine than deal with an intercooler that couldn't cope.
However, the thing that ruined the car was the absolutely dreadful suspension. The car is heavy too at 1508kg which didn't help.
I bought my new mk4 ST in Oct 2019, sold it two years later. The adaptive dampers absolutely ruined the car. I had a 2014 2.0T Focus ST MK2 which was so much fun. It would ride across bumps at stupid speeds with the car staying composed and the suspension doing its job, these are road cars after all, not track specials.
The obsession with flat cornering is not a good thing, the same roads I flew over in the mk3 pre face lift (there were suspension changes, different anti roll bars etc, in the face lift MK3 that ruined the face lift car) which in the mk4 would see the car bouncing all over the road and lifting me out of the seat. An absolute fool of a thing and that was in normal mode where the dampers were supposedly at the softest, in sport mode that dampers were so hard that it was comically bad.
So many journalists don't know their arse from their elbow so they go all in on the buzz words, flat cornering, sport modes, toys.... and forget that the home of a hot hatch is a rural road and all the things that come with that.
Friend of mine has a mk7 fiesta ST stock, drove it back to back with my mk4 ST, the fiesta was night and day better. Low speed ride wasn't good but at high speed it came into its own and could deal with bumps without lifting you out of the seat. Apparently Bilstein dampers really improve the mk7 also.

Peugeot 208 gti is king. Best design and quick as shit
fiesta ST is a pretty perfect car. i recently sold mine and got a civic type R instead. fiesta is an awesome car, it's big enough and comfy enough for long distance, but really agile and fun on track. You can really feel what the car is doing in a way that other similar hot hatches just don't. and it has such a huge aftermarket parts scene, the clio and 208 gti don't have even a tiny fraction of the ST's parts and mods. You can get a solid 330bhp + out of these by spending only a couple of grand. They are superb.!!
