    I would say the "worst" transition was after Fraizers death. Her death was well done (in my opinion) but the transition to a different doctor isn't really. Season 8 had random people then in season 9 we are introduced to Landry's daughter but she never develops as a character. The point where I'm not positive what her first name was...

    • @jeand5316
      @jeand5316 3 года назад +1

      Fraizer's first name is Janet. And I really agree with you that Carolyn wasn't as properly developed as Janet was, most likely because they were too focused on the Ori bow.

      Right
      She didnt have any 1 to 1 scene that really meant something apart of the ones with her dad, she was just there and never developed, that's a missed opportunity, compared to of course Jennifer Keller that started the same but then took part more than I could ever had hoped for

      I tend to prefer antagonists that aren't real villains (although a good villain is still fun), it seems more realistic. The vast majority of the time people aren't really all that bad, they're just following their own agendas (which are usually virtuous in their way). We only want to see them as villains because they're opposed to *our* agendas

      I was never able to accept Cam, especially as a SG-1 team leader. He was almost desperate and it felt pathetic, in a way. Vala was interesting in a way, but I can't see Daniel really getting in a relationship with her, as they did in canon. I would've preferred Daniel & Sam or Janet. Janet's elimination made a huge whole in the chemistry though it was well done.

    I liked having Jonas around and I think they could have better used him after he left or his people, especially if he had set up his own Stargate exploration program and you see Langarans running around the galaxy in their own SG teams. When it comes to recycling actors for roles, SG did pretty well in not having them noticed to easily. And in the past it was quite a common thing to do with many a series. I've watched a few old ones from the 60's and 70's and there were quite a few actors in them that played different people through their runs more than once.

    For long running series, casting changes are inevitable. In Stargate, they did a pretty good job bringing in new characters that worked individually. Jonas replacing Daniel is a good example of that. We didn’t want to see Daniel leave, but Jonas was a good fit. It worked. The SG1 replacements for season 9 and 10 didn’t go as well in my opinion. I know losing RDA was huge, but there were too many new faces. They became the front runners and even pushed back original characters. Sam Carter did some pretty amazing things to only be 2IC to Mitchell. That is a punishment move that the character did not deserve, militarily speaking and the things that she had done. On top of that, he is technically younger than her and her being on a promotion fast track it doesn’t make sense. If they wanted to make that work, they should had a better plan or back story. Don’t get me wrong, the new characters were likable. I just didn’t like how they went about it. With the way it became, I would have been happy if it ended with fishing.

    I know it is still quite controversial, but I actually enjoyed Mitchell coming to SG-1. Although it was sad to see O'Neill gone, it really felt like his character was winding down and getting dull in season 8 (obviously due to real life). It really gave a breath of fresh air to the show. However, I still think the best idea would have been to end SG-1 at season 8 and have season 9 & 10 be that Stargate Command series instead. It could have potentially allowed it to have 3 more seasons as well, since SyFy seems to consider that the absolute max lol

    I didn't necessarily like that they brought back someone who was already very well known in this series that previously died or presumed to be dead, came back in Stargate Atlantis as Elizabeth's husband. That literally made no sense to me, sure he was a good actor but the part that you're talking about, you didn't need anyone to be that good of an actor for that scene anyway, the guy didn't really talk a whole lot and he just did some expressions on his face and other than that that was it. Literally could have been anybody, or it could have been something over the phone where you could hear the other person sigh and it feels sad that Elizabeth was going to go on this mission, didn't even really need to see the actor on the other side especially for that type of scene.

    As far as casting, not following standard military protocol in real life really hobbled the show creatively, imo. After 4 seasons, Jack should have been promoted or retired, and replaced by Sam or someone else. Rotating more actors through the series in the role of SG-1 would have made the show even more realistic, created a more expansive cast, and would have allowed the characters to grow.

    I think the changes to the cast were usually done well, except for two cases: the replacing of Daniel with Jonas and the replacing of Jack with Cameron. In both cases it seems to me they made the new character a kind of cheap replacement of the original instead of a new thing. Jonas was especially bad because in order for him to be able to replace Daniel with all his wide knowledge they had to make Jonas superhuman level genius and that got very annoying. Cameron was a simple knock off of Jack. Would've been so much better if they had let Sam take over leading the team and brought in a new junior member. She deserved that leadership role much more than anyone else

      With Jonas, they ended up getting a chance to redeem him when Daniel returned. If they had just kept him on for half a season or so, with the two characters side by side, the differences would have come into focus much better almost automatically. Building up to his reason to leave would also have made him feel less like a piece of clay pressed into a Daniel-shaped hole. Unfortunately, they didn't take that opportunity - I assume for some out of universe reason or other.

    Writing out Dr Elizabeth Weir was a terrible mistake on the part of the writers. Having Carter join Atlantis just felt forced and unnatural, and didn't really add any value to the shows story. Weir's absence as a leader also hurt the story telling in a number of episodes in seasons four and five, where the character of Weir was more suited for story parts and lines.

When her character took over command of SG1, it didn’t make any sense either. She had no leadership experience, only being a negotiator, there is no way she would be placed in command of anything that important. Having Carter as the commander made a lot more sense. She was both a military leader and a scientist, two important qualities to bring to such a command. Wolsey even made more sense as a leader having his background as a bureaucrat and dealing with the Stargate projects longer than Weir was.

    Yes and no...they did need to happen.
    The reality is, all shows of this nature, should be done in a semi-anthological format.
    .
    The problem is, if you plan for your show to run a long time, you run into two issues.
    1) Keeping the stories and setting reasonably fresh without "jumping the shark" or getting into "power creep".
    2) Having enjoyable characters that don't become the backbone of the show only to age out of the roles.
    .
    Every major series has run into this like a brick wall. Only animated shows have ever really surpassed it, usually by already being so absurd that "jumping the shark" is impossible, and by the fact that their actors' age or appearance is entirely irrelevant. Hence...The Simpsons.
    .
    In the case of SG-1, had we followed a different SG team each season, we could've gotten a lot more of the actual development of the organization, and learned a lot more about the Goa'uld, without throwing in hyper-magical tech upon magical tech over and over, as well. Popular characters can always get cameos later on, and if an actor needs or wants to move on from the show, there's no problem. No multi-year contracts, but also no "I'm out of a job" problems. Keeps costs down, too, because you're not constantly giving raises to a static cast in every contract resigning. A format like that could've squeezed 6 or 7 seasons out of just the regular Goa'uld problems, before moving on to something worse, and doing another slow-burn on that for 6 or 7 seasons. You could run the show for 30 or 40 years, always having something reasonably fresh, but never having to jump off the deep end to keep things interesting. Maybe do the "big reveal" at the season 10 mark, and then have several seasons about how Earth adapts to the reality it's just been forced to accept. Part of keeping a well producing water, is proper management of that water usage. Don't drain the ideas so fast. Tease them out, make sure you're paying off those teases in due time. Don't give a feast when a snack will do. Use what you've got, don't go using up more to try and compensate. Etc.
    .
    It also would've been amazing for a spin-off show, as well. A spy-thriller about the Tok-Ra, told from the earliest days of their insurrection, and leap-frogging across the centuries until catching up with the other SG shows. You could follow a single symbiote the entire way...but every season would be a different era with a different batch of hosts. That's where you put some of the darker and grittier themes. Don't try to put them into the Stargate everyone expects to be a little campy and amusing to go with it's more emotional moments. In the case of Stargate: Universe...everyone was just expecting more regular Stargate because "universe" is so vague. If you call a show, "Stargate: Tok'Ra," nobody's going to expect the same fun and light-hearted show with poignant moments...they're going to expect life-or-death struggles, and lots of pain. Branding is important...and the big failure of Stargate: Universe was branding...it didn't match everyone's expectations, because everything anyone knew about it just seemed like more Stargate...but that's not what they got.

    SG-1 ended with season 8 for me. Season 9 and 10 were terrible in so many ways and the addition of the Farscape cast was the showronners biggest mistake! It made SG-1 unwatchable for me with Ben Browder trying to replace RDA and Claudia Black's cringy and super annoying character killed the show utterly.

      Interesting. 9 and 10 are actually my favorites. I thought the Ori were such a great villain, especially after 8 seasons of Gao'uld. Mitchell was different but I thought he had his own fun character traits, and Vala I loved her interactions with Daniel

I fell in love with Mitchell's character. I didn't realize there were 8 seasons until the 10th season ended and I saw reruns. I liked RDA but i love Mitchell.

      @@christinaburke2461 Well, I grew up watching the show with the classic SG-1 cast, so from season 9-10 the whole show felt way different and off to me and I also very much disliked most of the storylines from season 9-10. It seemed like the quality of the writing fell way low in those seasons. I hated that SG-1 turned into a Farscape rejects show and I couldn't stand Ben's and Claudia's characters.

      @@lordkhal I don't see how Ben and Claudia were Farscape rejects as they were the central stars to Farscape.
      Well if you didn't like the changes or Ben and Claudia coming on board maybe complain to RDA about stepping down. That was his decision.
      Am I a Farscape reject because Im a Gate fan because of Ben and Claudia? A lot of Farscape fans became fans of Gate because of them. How about those of us fans who have to sit through 8 seasons without them?
      Admit it though...it doesn't matter what cast was added to Gate you would have had a problem with them.
      (Apparently I missed that part of your response of Farscape rejects a few days ago).
      See this is why so many Farscape fans have an issue with Gate fans. We get a lot of hostility. Who are you referring to as rejects? We Farscape fans or just Ben and Claudia?
      Do you get so snarky about Beau Bridges taking over for Don Davis?
      I like Gate because of Ben and Claudia. Are we not welcome on board?

    Changes are not nice, but it happens. HOWEVER, if a writer feels they have to kill a character to make their writing or directing more interesting, then they don't deserve to be a writer or director. If you can't write to make your story more interesting, instead of killing off a character... It's lame.

    • @DavidSmith-fs5qj
      @DavidSmith-fs5qj 2 года назад +1

      I agree. If an actor expresses a desire to leave a show, then fine, if the writer feels that the best way to bring closure to that character is to kill them off, then fine. However, when the writer feels the need to kill a character off to, "shake things up", then they just lose my respect. "Shake things up", what does that even mean? They write two characters, Dr Janet Fraiser, and Dr Carson Beckett, who become hugely popular characters, then kill them off, for what? Their deaths didnt add anything to the show. What is it with these people, why cant they just leave things alone and let us enjoy the characters as they are?

    • @p-cell
      @p-cell 2 года назад

      @@DavidSmith-fs5qj absolutely, well said my friend. I think it have to do with Groupthink too. One person does it and everyone follow in step. And in the end it never works, so they go out of their way and try to bring those characters back in the weirdest way like alternative universe or a clone.

    • @DavidSmith-fs5qj
      @DavidSmith-fs5qj 2 года назад +1

      @@p-cell Thanks for your comment. Yes, when it came to RDA and Amanda Tapping, they were pretty much untouchable, and it was always going to be that way. So when RDA opted for a reduced workload, the writers just came up plotlines in which the character took a back seat, spending more time at the base. This meant that when Stargate Atlantis began, RDA appeared in the pilot, in a reduced role(just to get things going), then had a more prominant role in the two parter in which he co-stars with Robert Picardo(Mr Woolsley). Then Amanda Tapping reprises her role as Samantha Carter, to the delight of fans. Daniel, as you say, well, that one is a whole lot more complicated. The actor expresses a desire to leave because of creative differences, but i would assume the writers really dont want to close the door, so they come up with the accending plotline, and he returns to the show, and makes an appearance alongside Dr McKay in Atlantis(great interplay between the two, "you dont really think you are smarter than me?"). Unfourtunately, if you are a guest star, then you are expendable, but just look at the missed opportunities, think of Dr Fraiser and Dr Beckett appearing toghether, even if its once or twice? Message to the writers, dont burn your bridges.

    but , . sorry i jsut cant follow this ... i mean i love This show .. And u can tell that all tha actors Were AAA !! U can tell they all Put there hart into this projected
    I hate it when u watch a show and the 1st season was a Ballpark home run!!! then the 2nd season THen the 3 and 4th , and then 8 or 9 is not.as good ish? I'm not talking about the Writing, im talking about ego-inflated Actors ... so ..., if u take clips from the 1st season , and THe last Season (Or toward the end_) ,, would you see .. a difference in the product value ?. I dont know if the actors are burned out . ( or there ego is inflamed ) and i not really talking about Stargate??? maybe i am ,, but alot of other shows this is way more Evident .
    u can tell, in season 1 of a show, that these actors rehearsed their lines!! u can tell they Were up all night , REreading the lines , trying to get in the head of that character ( and how the Character felt! )
    so, i don't know if when they are in season 8 , they think, o i am famous , everyone knows who i am , i dont need to try supper hard. ( unlike season 1 , u are trying ur supper-best to Be a supper star! u feel like this is your big Chance TO be Seen by the World! )
    but , i guess in Season 8 , they think , Man, just another day in the office. ( they dont REread there lines over and over , they are not trying to think about what that Charter is Feeling. )
    i mean, i woulder, if u took all the bloopers from a bunch of project that Spanned more the 5 ish years, and you compare, the amount of Bloopers, of Each season, ( like season-8 has 25 bloopers and season-1 had like 3 bloopers ) what kind of Chart u would see. would it go up and down , or would t go up .. ( i cant see it going down)
    When they Used Film U didnt want Bloopers because it WAs Expensive to Use Film , Now we are digital , so they just let the Actors take there time . since digital doesnt have physical waste like film did .
