  • STARGATE SG-1 gave us a lot of fascinating secondary characters, from the villainous Goa'uld to allies like the Tok'ra and the Tollan. But in that grey area in between sat characters like Aris Boch, a rogue who was an antagonist to SG-1 - capturing them and threatening to hand them over to Sokar - before he turned sympathetic.
    In this chat with "Dial the Gate," series writer and executive producer ROBERT C. COOPER talks about Season 3's "Deadman Switch" and what he was hoping to create with the character of Aris Boch, who would be played by "Flash Gordon" veteran Sam J. Jones. And why didn't Aris Boch ever return to the show, in spite of the fact that fans seemed to love the character so much?
    This clip is from Dial the Gate's full-length, 68-minute conversation with Rob. Watch the full interview here: • 128: Robert C. Cooper ...

      What I loved about the episode and character is that it showed clearly that not everything going on in the galaxy was in the event-orbit of the Tauri.

    SG1, while episodic, has elements in the majority of episodes that are used later. I took my buddy through the series trying to skip unnecessary episodes cause he didn't wanna watch 200+ of them, and I noticed this a lot. I often had to stop and briefly explain "oh yeah in X episode we found this thing" or whatever.
    Like that episode with the invisible aliens. You don't see them again but you do see the weapons that were made in that episode later to find cloaked enemies. Or a character is introduced in an episode with no important implications but is a major player later in other episodes. Or even just characters referring back to a phenomenon in a prior episode that relates to the current problem. The episodes intertwine a lot in subtle ways.

      The Galaxy is massive, and the Stargate Network doesn't even connect to every corner of it. So it stands to reason that there will a whole lot of people and things that you will only ever encounter once, but what you learn from that experience will stick with you forever. So I always felt that the episodic format worked well with Stargate.

    Stargate surely was episodic but the world was consistent so after some time even the episodic format felt like there was enought connecting tissues.
    The episodic formula was good especially later one with multiple 2 and pseudo 3 parters. Episodic enought to hop in and out for the viewer while also allowing for those " man i gonna have to see next week" moments.

    I liked Aris Boch as a character, and I understand why we never saw him again. Off the top of my head I can think of some possible story arcs that may have been considered, and I wouldn't be surprised if they were considered but never chosen. That reveal of Apophis I'll be honest I was not extremely surprised, but that's not a bad thing. Like watching him in that full face covering and just his mannerisms I was thinking "something is hinky about that guy I don't know what but its gonna come up". Then, shenanigans occurred, he took his mask off and went all megalomaniac in proper Go'auld system Lord fashion, because its sacrilege if they don't it's why we love them as villains, and I was just like "Ah, there's the hinkiness I suspected, thought we'd seen the last of him but this makes sense given how the Go'auld likely would be about the foes they conquer it makes sense. Pretty awesome creative choice for such an iconic villain. I am a fan of that.

    I suspect part of why Vala was more successful is because Claudia Black was known from Farscape. I don't think most people knew at the time that Sam Jones played Flash Gordon. I only realised when I saw Ted. I liked Aris, he's 1 of the elements of SG I wish I'd seen again, like the Reetou.

      Sam Mr. "The Highway Man" and "Jungle Jack" was just awesome. And I would have loved to see him coming back. I loved the character of Aris Boch.
      But there was a thing which bothered me - mainly in the last third of the episode. I had the feeling that Sam was not allowed to go his full potential and that the other cast did not like him. There was defintely missing some chemistry. The lines of Samantha Carter were just dull and kind of mother in law like.
      Did Sam piss them off? In Flash Gordon it was said that he wasn't easy to work with. Left the set before the shooting was done ...

    I think that fans could point to many characters who could and should have returned. In the season four episode The Curse(a brilliant episode), Dr Steven Rayner, Daniel Jackson's bitter rival, who discovers that Daniel's theories about the pyramids being built by aliens are true, would have been a welcome returning or reccuring guest star.
    On top of that, i have always felt that The Ashen should have had more of a story arc, 2010 was a brilliant episode, but for me, should have been a two part episode, even spreading the concept over several episodes, there seemed almost too much to cram in in just one episode. The scene in which Sam attempts to persuade Jack to help out, only for Jack, who is bitter and angry at his former colleague and lets her know in no uncertain terms, "i pointed out the red flags, but nobody listened, especialliy you", it was so powerful, and yet, in no time at all, Jack is onboard, just like that, it all seemed so rushed. I also thought it would have been a nice touch to have had Daniel and Janet together(the one relationship that would have been possible), in a relationship and also trying for a child and coming together with Sam to investigate. What do you think?

    • @SuperSpatman
      @SuperSpatman 2 года назад +4

      I think that Jack still felt a sense of duty to his friends and to humanity. He couldn't have cared less about the leaders and the politicians, he just couldn't sit by and let his friends risk everything alone. That sort of explains the quick decision. It felt more like a "I told you so. I was right all along and you all ignored me, but obviously I'm going to help."
      I also felt like the Ashen could have been allies that SG-1 occasionally met, much like the Tok'Ra, for a season or two, before a much bigger reveal that they had devastated many of the planets that they already had in their alliance.

    • @DavidSmith-fs5qj
      @DavidSmith-fs5qj 2 года назад +2

      @@SuperSpatman Yeah, i get that. Hindsight is a wonderful thing, if only we could go back, knowing what we know now. The writers have also got budget restraints, maybe some put forward the idea of a story arc, maybe. I think that in a perfect world, they could have had an episode in which they meet the Ashen, and that lays the groundwork for 2010. I read some comments the other day re the Jason Bourne movies, and someone commented, "ah, but in the book, this happens", that's the problem, if you are writing a book, is it 300 pages, 350 or 400 it's up to the author, but in a movie or tv series, you have limits. Thank for the conversation.

    I feel that Aris Boch could have potentially had great story potential tying in with the Lucian Alliance, and it could have potentially made a better introduction of the Lucian Alliance to viewers.
    For example after the System Lords fell out of power Aris Boch would still need the drug he takes to stay alive and the Lucian Alliance having taken control of a lot of the Goa'uld's holdings could have potentially been a position to supply Boch with the drug. And then he could have met SG-1 as an unwilling enforcer of the Lucian Alliance and hates that they're hooking people on the space corn drug. And eventually SG-1 kills a lot of the Lucian Alliance leaders and installs Boch as their new leader or something.

    Difference between Boch and Vala is that Boch is clearly in opposition to protagonists. He is polite and affable, but has aims that contradict the main cast. Vala on the other hand switched back and forth between antagonist and asset over her early appearances. There is no reason why Boch could not do the same if he was brought back.

    But there was a thing which bothered me - mainly in the last third of the show.

      @@Mangomesh One of the reasons given for the killing off of Dr Janet Fraiser in season seven was that it was thought that it would be the last season, and the show would go straight to Atlantis. Looking back maybe that is what they should have done. I read that following Teryl Rothery's character being killed off, Don S. Davis felt that it just wasn't the same without her, and for me the quality dropped in those last seasons. That the show ran for ten seasons is always held up as an achievement, say in comparison to the Star Trek shows, TNG, DS9 and Voyager al ran for seven seasons, but for me, seven seasons seemed about right, the writers simply start to run out of ideas.

The last time we saw her, she was a little girl, yet in this story, she is sixteen, and is growing up as a beautiful young woman. We never see her again after this episode, it's like the writers didn't care about the characters, the thing is, we do, that is why we watch a show.

    Aris Boch was a character that was left dangling, and that should not have happened, so badly that it actually detracted from the show because many fans were waiting for him to reappear in some future episode. Vala, on the other hand, to me was a character that was injected into the show to please a number crunching quota driven bean counter that was worried about feminists wanting a larger than life female lead character. I could never warm to Vala and felt much of the storyline she was involved in was rushed and to be totally honest not very well written.
