    I thought the Canon reason you couldn't recharge ZPMs was because they were a one-time-use. They accessed their own pocket Dimension and once that Dimension was out of energy, they were fully depleted for good. I'm pretty sure Rodney addressed that in one of the episodes.

    ZPMs would be too overpowered if they could be recharged (with a Star as Destiny does). Every ship could do that. Your shields are unpenetrable, your weapons cut through one shot Hives but, Oh No! Your ZPM is on 10%! Jump in HyperSpace to a Star, Recharge and head back on.
    Also the Hologram says when asked about the Defeat of the Ancients: "They couldn't create ZPMs fast enough to counter the Wraith offensive". If they could recharge them, she would say that "recharge" instead "create". Sooo, they kinda answered the question in the very first episode! :D

      They were OP and Todd told their weakness in using them... Ancients would use more Z.PM. powered ships into deeper enemy territory and they (wraith) would trap and ambush them and steal the Z.P.Ms to build their Ship, Tech and Clones. Aurroa class battle ships weren't equipt with extra galactic hyperdrives to keep the wraith from learning from it. Only from Aurroa Crew knowledge were they able to modify their own ships to reach the milky way.

    • @TheMAZZTer
      @TheMAZZTer 3 года назад +2

      Headcanon: ZPMs can't be recharged; you need to make a new pocket universe and assemble a ZPM casing around it to get a new ZPM. ZPMs either can't be charged or the Atlantis team has to find a way even the Ancients couldn't. This would explain why they never figure out how to do it if they basically have to make new ones from scratch (and perhaps have never found the specialized facility the Ancients built to do so... or maybe the Wraith destroyed it,).

    It always grinded my gears that they got a ancient it blew up, they could have had like 10 of them but like do they have the man power to use them, people with the gene to operate it, and so on, or had orion be like this big project to keep float. because even 12 ships in total would have still been crushed in a all out war, and the gate bridge should be a thing, it just needs to be like real reason to only use it in emergenzies, like they have finite ammount of dials before a ship needs to go and refuel them for lack of a better word. the midway takeover episode was super cool. Also Also i would love to see a stargate series that would focus on a small crew that on a mission discover some ancient tech and plans and as they bring stuff back their discovery is kinda dismissed but carter or mkay is there and they figure the plans out and it would be for like a max 12 crew ship thats ZPM operated, and they after some drama get support to build it but its more of a permissio to build it but they dont have the resourses so then it would be a scaveger hunt in both galaxies for the missing tech and resourses. TLDR: they are form a new branch of the stargate program, and first its just like 2 or 3, four person squads, and their focus is to get that ship done. they could have like blank hull but nothing else to start with, and the old regulars would be quest-stars.

    • @aziris7257
      @aziris7257 2 года назад

      It wouldn't explode, nothing would happen. The energy inside the ZPM is not explosive, it's quantum. Which means that as long as no stimulation that disturbs the quantum wave of the ZPM is applied, it is inert and will not leak energy. But to cause this disturbance, you need to know how it works. The Tauri knows this because they studied the Ancient Control Chair in Antarctica after it was used to fend off Anubis. There is a video that explains how the ZPM works in reality, but I don't know what keywords to search for.

I guess they spoke with them offscreen about it and they were like: guys you are straight out of luck here. The biggest misconception is that people think of ZPM's as battery, where there is a charge that is used up. What is actually happening is a pocket dimension similar to our own is created for each ZPM. So us "using" the energy is the same as us using our natural resources for energy. The amount of energy in that dimension remains the same, but the usability of it decreases. Same as our universe. In an impossible large amount of time the energy present in our universe will be spread our so far that there is no reactions occurring. All the energy is still THERE, but ununusable.
    This is the way the ZPM's work; they create their own dimension with still usable energy, and over use the energy is spread out, and rendered inert. It's still full of energy, just none.

  • @CZpersi

    THese are great interviews. Thanks! As for ZPMs - I always thought that ZPMs are more sinister artifacts than we truly realize. I mean - imagine that you create an entire small universe, only to draw energy from it. Am I the only one, who thinks that this is kinda... diabolical? The resulting product looks so clean and peaceful, but c'mon, you are basically creating a universe-in-a-bottle only to destroy it, slowly and painfully! Are there really no consequences to this? Unraveling this sinister side of ZPM creation would be an excellent plot for SG: Universe episode.

    I always assumed it was a nominally "less advanced" version of the city-ship. Basically them building one to see if they could. All the amenities and primary features, but none of the extra cool stuff beyond things they were already wholly certain would always work. They were nothing if not thorough, after all.
    .
    Then, once they'd worked out the bugs, they built Atlantis, shortly before the plague struck.
    .
    The original city-ship was powerful, and useful, but not built to full potential. So, during the war with the Wraith, it was disabled relatively quickly, and went down on that planet, never to fly again. Maybe it's nature as a prototype made it too much of a pain to bother repairing, or maybe the damage was so significant that it would've been easier to build another, if they could've. But most of all, the war prevented them from any such megaprojects at that time, and so there the wreck stayed.

    on the Subject of Atlantis, there was likely more than one, as a race that spanned the galaxy, it wouldnt make sense to even only have 1 in the Milky Way,
    Likely there was multiple cities built, and they all left for Pegasus together, hence going to Tao'nas to get a ZPM from an Identical Outpost that was found on earth, the only difference was earth's ZPM was depleted, they were sparse, as Ra had one and didnt even know it. there was another chair outpost .
    Either way, assuming Tao'nas had a Ancient city, and Earth, both leaving for Pegasus at the same time could Explain Atlantis and the City found in the Tower Episode, which was originally named "Sister City" btw, Sister City, assumes they were of about the same age,
    Then you have the Assurians copy and then the copy the outcast Assurian's built to study human evolution.
    As for ZPM Recharging, they are a self contained artificial pocket of subspace time, so size is limited, as is the vacuum energy, you can't recharge a space time once you use it all.
    The Reason Arcturus was a big deal is because it bypasses the limits of the ZPM by extracting the vacuum energy from our own space time, which our universe as far as we know is limitless, where as a ZPM contains a small artificial pocket of sub space time. with the ZPM being artificially created pocket of subspace, small and limited power, Exotic particles were never produced or if they were they were contained within the artificial subspace pocket and harmless to us.
    Arcturus on the other hand created exotic particles in our own space time, and they were unable to control them as they didn't exist within the laws of physics as we or even the Alterans/Lantians know.
    The one thing they also never covered is why the Alterans Left the Ida Galaxy before coming to the Milkyway, and we never really explored Ida either,
    Thor said it had hundreds of stargates, and they appear to be the same type found in the milky way, so they were prior to the pegasus model, or even before the milky way.

The Other Asuran City had a fake stargate.
      Same with Ta'onas, Gate was not part of the ZPM Power Circuit.
      There was in Canon mention of 3 other Ancient City Ships, These were not directly mentioned in the TV show, but in parts of the now vaporware Stargate Worlds main quest arc.
      -2 Abandoned in Milky way (IIRC the arc was regarding the Planet from "The Entity"), BP6-3Q1 is also mentioned to have a City ship as well as a few other Lantean ships, but weren't discovered until after Atlantis was back in the milky way (sub space link with each city?), it was also revealed the bugs were a weapon.
      This maybe covered in the new Series being produced for Amazon.
      -1 was abandoned because of a computer virus the wraith sent, and disabling the city allowed the wraith to move through a large section of space not covered by Lantean Deep Space Sensors.
      It seems they did build a few, but they were lost in the war/plague/elements.

    Yea, the whole "where to get ZPMs?" part is with the "why not explore whole Atlantis and Destiny " the part that annoyed me A LOT.
    Sure, you cant give them unlimited access, but after they could transfer people to atlantis in season 2 the city should've been checked out top to bottom 100 times.
    I mean they found stuff like the "satilie board game" to controll civs and other things and said that those things are basicly to complex to walk in and instandly tell what the reseach in room XYZ is and I also dont think that there would be an open access excel that is open to the public in the cities computer systems, but they should've been able to find the drone factory or other usefull things. But in the end i would also say that a civ like the Ancients beeing limited to one small city doesnt seem very logical. The pegasus replicator city was very impressive... but the whole ancient civ limited to one atlantis, while the relicators had so much, while only living on one planet compared to the Ancients who had the whole universe with some outposts? nah... atalntis could maybe hold like 200.000 to 1 million people max... doesnt make sense anyway.
    Speaking about it.... i wish they would've used atlantis to dial the Destiny or use the new found superdrive fromt the last episodes to jump atalntis to the Destiny after they FINALLY found the ZPM room, because now that atlantis was on earth there was no excuse anymore to not totally search the city.
    I know they had plans for a movie to go back to pegasus... but i'm still mad that they ended SGA and wasted to much time on the dark drama in SGU and started so many things without a clear storyline

      The ancients had cities and outposts on many planets in the pegasus galaxy,, we seen evidence of this in the show. There were maany cities shaped just like Atlantis. Remember the one that was powered by geothermal energy. Atlantis was the newest and last city they built and it also was the only city built by Ancients that was also a ship. I think all the cities and bases were like prototypes, and one day someone was like "lets build a city that can fly."
      In season 2 most of the city was still underwater, as the shield had retracted to save power so the main part was protected for all the years it spent underwater. And most likely any technology in the flooded sections that wasn't water tight like the Gateships/jumpers would be destroyed or damaged beyond repair from the water which was salt water. But I agree they should have at least sent enough people over to explore the sections that were above water or protected by the shield. Another issue was that they had more important things going on. And the SCG base on Earth is only so big and bringing too many people there could attract attention.

    • @Seelenverheizer

      i dont think there is a ZPM room and even with a lot of people looking 24/7 i would expect it to be like search there entirety of New York with 1000 people while potencially dangerous stuff is there would take a lot of time and much can be mist. I do agree it could have been used more often but one of the points i liked about Atlantis that the very next episode might be the one where they find something cool and new just in the city. The city especially early on was a form of secondary character itself.

    Maybe the zpm is not talked about by the ancients because its something they are ashamed of? What if creating one is highly destructive? Compression of an entire naquita solar body, or instead of a planetoid it requires a white dwarf or simular along the lines of ancient ancient tech like the recharging of Destiny only with more possibilities of misuse , or an actual event of misuse by themselves or others they shared the knowledge with once

    • @KohuGaly
      @KohuGaly 2 года назад +1

      The simpler explanation is that most ancients simply don't know. The knowledge of how such a powerful device is created would be a highly guarded secret - both the theory (ie. the science behind it) and the practice (ie. where the factory is).

    What I'd like to know is why the Atlantis crew didn't switch to the Asuran pistol after The Return when there would have been dozens if not hundreds lying around? On the subject of why they never asked the ancients how to charge the zpms, specifically the production reason (that it would take away the handicap and make the expedition too powerful), I get that, it makes sense. But it'd be easy to explain away by the ancients saying, 'oh they're charged by a giant megastructure surrounding a black hole' or something like that where the answer doesn't give a solution to problem.
    What I always wonder is if anyone ever came up with a reason/handwave of why everyone spoke English in space even though they did have their own spoke languages. I realize it's a production issue, but they could have come up with a translation system like star trek or Farscape did, or come up with their own technobabble reason, like when you travel through the gate, it stores language info from the traveler and imparts them on the future travelers or that the Goa'uld adopted English because it was more flexible than the ancient Egyptian derived Goa'uld language. Maybe the ancients they ran across, as being advanced humans had some sort of psychic method of learning languages which would still make spoken Ancient unintelligible unless spoken by an actual Ancient. Just stuff like that, I think it helps with suspending disbelief even if they're just made up technobabble.

    • @limiv5272
      @limiv5272 3 года назад +1

      A reason for why they never asked the ancients or looked up in the city database how to make ZPMs was definitely missing. I also think they should've had the expedition discover that it was so complicated that they couldn't feasibly do it with existing technology and resources
      I kinda liked how on the very first SG-1 episode after the pilot they sort of went *wink wink* and had everybody speak English. A universal translator and other plot devices basically do the same thing, so they saved up on technobabble while making fun of such plot devices.
      I don't think the Goa'uld language was derived from ancient Egyptian. The Goa'uld arrived on earth using FTL capable spaceships, they had to have developed their own language long before arriving here. It's more likely their language was based on the Unas' language but I suppose it also could've been a completely new thing

Remember when Camulus offered the ZPM that had been recharged incorrectly, that would have exploded if plugged in. Atlantis really should have had a laboratory or construction facility for ZPMs and an artificial intelligence or multiples to warn the crew. Gene Roddenberrys Andromeda is great this way, the ship has an AI and an android body that be separate or interact over a wifi. There really should have been an "Atlantis" AI character, even if it was just reactivated when the ancients retook the city ship

But i do agree they should have gotten some hints to potencial locations etc. The later seasons did push the small mundane things out of the scope. Of cause they could have had some secondary team mention that there were at another potencial location where a ZPM could have been but they couldnt find it or it has lost its charge but that wouldnt have really fit the current episodes story i guees. I do choose to believe that other teams did that and went there to ask but it was mostly uneventfull and unsuccesfull so we didnt see it in the show.
      I really did enjoy the times where the team saw those rando units returning from missions all banged up in SG1.
