I talked my WWII US Army Vet Dad into buying a 1976 Cadillac Coupe DeVille used garaged low miles. One of the best vehicles we ever had in our family. I would love to have one now regardless of about 11 mpg.
@@patheticprepper4496 Ford, Chevy and Dodge have different problems to deal with today. The EPA, emissions and crash safety didn't really exist back then. The engineers and bean counters have different agendas. There are many fans of old muscle cars and engine platforms paved the way to the aftermarket support we have today. Anyone that doesn't understand or knows this fact doesn't know any history automotive wise.
@BarryTsGarage I would assume so, if you are going to put a bigger cam and aftermarket heads higher lift springs and bigger valves along with aftermarket rockers would prefer much mandatory. Even the 472, there were lots of those in pick and pull yards when I was a kid but I have only seen a handful in the last decade.
Not to mention that the 500 c.i. caddy is 45 lbs. lighter. I build airboats and any boat that the customer wants a direct drive ( propeller directly to the engine's crankshaft) is let them drive my boat and give them customers that changed to a 472/500 and they end up burning less fuel and still Have the same or more power as well as engine longevity because we never turn the engine more than 3k rpm's.
Very popular in swamp buggies as well. An acquaintance of mine had a 3 or 4 engines sitting around. I asked what they were for. "500 cubic inch Cadillac engines. Best engine hands down for a buggy. "
I put a 1969 caddy 375hp 472cid in my 1970 chevy dually, would outrun most of the local shortbox chevys. Had to run premium fuel at 10.5:1 compression though.
We tried a 500 Cadillac engine in a 1985 crew cab dually Chevy pickup and we couldn't manage to keep it cool pulling a load and I never did figure out what the issue was.
He knows! I wish I could get ED to help me build my 67 Ford 289. I know that he is retired but I would grease the wallet and do the heavy stuff for him. Tell him please 🥺, My 80 year old mom would be in his debt for life she said.

If everything else is great, poor gas, mileage is worth it!
Love the old timers! Just wish gm, ford, and dodge did!

With a good intake heads and cam you can have some fun with the 500. No replacement for displacement if you don't count nitrous or forced induction.
Yes. Ed also does things with the valve springs and lifters…

That’s a tough one - you would think it wouldn’t be a problem …
@@BarryTsGarage it pulled so good too! The torque it had at low rpm was perfect for what we were using it for.
❤❤❤❤
An old timer I know drives an early 70s chevy with a 500 inch caddy.
Good man!

And the weight was less
That’s pretty amazing when you think about it
You can't afford or find a 500 caddy engine to save your life
I still come across 500's all the time. And can still pick them up around $500 or less. Have a couple on hand now.
Ive got a 472 in the driveway right now
