I think it's because it was the 90s, when a lot of fans were kids, there was a lot of marketing around the movie, it probably got promoted to hell on Cartoon Network. I think most of the bad reviews are objective people saying, "It may be nostalgic, but the movie is still awful..."
Not being an American, I lost the original domestic reception, but the history I have read is as follows: it was fairly succesful with the main target public, children, and it revitalized the Loony Tunes before theneyes of a generation more familiar with the Tiny Toonies even if it was not the hit the partnership of Jordan and Bugs would make one think it could be. However, as the '90s gave way to the 2000s, said children became cynical teenagers and young adults, and the whole social climate changed, too. The people who had the most reason to remember the movie fondly started to see it for the exercise in commercialism and opportunism it (in part) was. More recently, the nostalgia for the sweet '90s of their childhood and early adolescence (i.e. the yearning for a simpler and arguably less awful time) did its work, and Space Jam started to be seen as an enjoyable artificial of its time. Probably not iconic enough to deserve a sequel or something like, but good fun nevertheless.
When I was a kid, the scene where the kids jeer the players off their court and they're calling them "wannabes." I thought they were saying "Wallabies" so I called everyone a goddamn wallaby for like two months before anyone told me.
This is the sweetest thing, honestly! I think most kids do that, I remember I thought the gas chain "Kwik Fill" was "Kiwi Fill" due to my mild (undiagnosed) dyslexia until I was like 19. My sister who is 12 years younger than me corrected me when I asked if we were stopping at Kiwi Fill 😅 I think these memories are precious and I hope kids today can be as innocent without growing up too fast or feeling embarrassed for being human.
I can’t help but think there is an intentional parallel between the Looney Tunes being captured by an evil theme park in the movie (made in 1997) and in real life, Six Flags acquired the rights of Looney Tunes in 1984 and used them to market Six Flags. Six Flags also has a park named Magic Mountain. Idk, just thought it was interesting! Edit: oops it’s tunes not toons
Well you can definitely get away with calling them "The Looney Toons", cause the show itself is about the music, the tunes, but the characters are cartoons, so it makes more sensr to call em toons imo.
I think the writer/director of this movie just had an unbridled lust for basketball players and had no socially acceptable outlet for it. So he chose looney toones

one thing that has certainly spawned from this movie is that there’s an uptick in people stealing lebron heads it used to be zero, now it’s definitely past two, as a walmart employee I highly approve of it but it’s an interesting thing that’s happened from this movie nonetheless
What I remember from Space Jam (and I only saw it like two years ago, I have no emotional childhood attachment to this franchise): - Michael Jordan talks to cartoon characters - Good soundtrack - A whole lot of basketball - The guy from Ghostbusters becomes a balloon Edit because I wrote this before watching the video (like a buffoon): It was Wayne Knight who turned into a balloon. Because of course it was.
My favorite part of this movie is that you don't realize Bill Murray is playing himself until about halfway through the movie. Like, yes, Michael Jordan is playing himself, but Wayne Night is playing a completely fictional character. Until they called him "Mr. Murray" I just assumed Bill was some random... friend
I recall an offhand mention of how the producer got him involved (in the game, but also probably the movie in general). Also, the main boss guy calling him 'Dan Aykroyd' is comedy genius in my books.
Meanwhile, Looney Tunes: Back in Action (2003) starring Brendan Fraser has absolutely no flaws and can be compared to other cinematic masterpieces such as Shrek (2001) and Scooby-Doo: Monsters Unleased (2004).
For those complaining that the sequel was too long, can we please collectively remember that the first movie's opening credits were like 6-7 hours long
That scene where they go to the medium is kinda funny. Also, Charles Barkely promising he'll never swear again if God gives him his talent back is fine.
Yeah this video did for me the exact opposite of his intention. The original has everything one loves about Looney Tunes. Especially with after them drinking the secret stuff and becoming suddenly “good” at basketball with violence
facts. everything he thought we were laughing at was intended to be funny. In the context of the whole movie that shit hits. also surprised he didnt google the cast and see that Danny Devito played the mucus monster
What matters is context. The Loony Toons were super popular when Space Jam came out, so everyone was excited to go on adventure with them and America's most famous athlete at the time. Not to mention all the cool 90's music. Space jam 2 feels solely like a cash grab, even if the 1st one was too. But it was also new and exciting within the context of the 90's.
I'm not going to lie, this video has completely reminded me exactly of why I loved space jam as a child and I still think that I possibly will still enjoy it and do want to watch it again. Thanks Drew, I know that wasn't your point, but I appreciate it anyway.
Yeah I haven't seen both but after seeing some clips of the second movie and then seeing this video, I still think the original is better and ACTUALLY funny at times.
Yeah honestly it was a good mix of over the top looney tunes stuff and the human parts of the story. The scenes where Barkley and Ewing are dealing with losing their powers are really funny. I watched it over and over as a kid and it's still good today imo
to be fair, "challenging short aliens to basketball in a comedic attempt to outsmart them" is exactly a Looney Tunes thing to do Bugs clowned on Gossamer by pretending to be a hair stylist one time, have you ever _seen_ Looney Tunes?
The whole time he was criticizing looney tunes scenes was exactly the kind of thing they would do in their cartoons, I didn't see anything wrong with it LOL it was great just seeing these clips again
That’s why the original Space Jam works whereas the new one doesn’t. Space Jam 1 played up the absurdity of situations and gave stupid, looney tunes styled solutions to them like pumping a guy with air after he got flattened, whereas Space Jam 2 is just references to other movies and shows. It’s not the Looney Tunes, it’s some executives trying to make a quick buck with the Looney Tunes
Yea I wasnt understanding where he was going with certain points. I was sitting here just thinking, "well isn't that the point of looney tunes ? To be in looney, wacky impossible situations ??" The first space jam gave exactly what needed to be given, stayed pretty faithful to the cartoon.
Drew Gooden and Danny Gonzalez expect us to believe he's 2 different people even though he couldn't be bothered to change his initials between his alter egos, let alone his appearance and personality
fun fact about me: i was in dance class and the first dance i had to perform was a dance to the space jam theme song (idfk), and so when you started playing the theme song, my body went into a fight or flight response before remembering that this is a youtube video and i don't have to perform a dance.
The biggest sin of "Space Jam 2: LeBron gets kidnapped" really is being almost two hours long. I enjoyed the movie quite a bit until the basketball game began. I was even looking forward to it, until I realized that the game would last another whole hour, especially because it wasn't as entertaining because of the *style points* imo
I think that’s the problem with cinema these days. RUclips video essays are 45 minutes to 3 hours long, 12-16 hour tv shows get binged in a day, so every film HAS to be long enough to be justified. This movie might have been better if it was less dramatic and leaned into the fact that it’s legacy is trash rather than trying to do an epic family drama for 20 minutes with an hour and a half of meta reference gags.
Drew's actual knowledge of basketball makes the jokes in this video so much better: "That's touching Lebron, but I'm gonna have to give you a shot clock violation because you've been holding the ball for four minutes"
Space Jam 2 heavily reminds me of the worst RUclips rewind videos. It’s like Warner Bros just took every successful media they had the rights to and mashed them into one very confusing storyline that mostly skips around but somehow had a happy ending.
I agree with Drew that the new movie was too long, but other than that I honestly just enjoyed it. It was just entertaining. It was just fun to sit back and just take something in like when I was a kid.

🔥 ruclips.net/video/iFpjW1eibWI/видео.html 🔥
This is the sweetest thing, honestly! I think most kids do that, I remember I thought the gas chain "Kwik Fill" was "Kiwi Fill" due to my mild (undiagnosed) dyslexia until I was like 19. My sister who is 12 years younger than me corrected me when I asked if we were stopping at Kiwi Fill 😅 I think these memories are precious and I hope kids today can be as innocent without growing up too fast or feeling embarrassed for being human.
The scene makes no sense, anyway. If they're such basketball fans, how do they not already know what happened to Charles Barkley and the other 4?
Drew screaming “DID BUGS BUNNY JUST DIE?!?!” in disbelief has me cry-laughing right now. 😂😂😭😭

What I remember from Space Jam (and I only saw it like two years ago, I have no emotional childhood attachment to this franchise):
- Michael Jordan talks to cartoon characters
- Good soundtrack
- A whole lot of basketball
- The guy from Ghostbusters becomes a balloon
Edit because I wrote this before watching the video (like a buffoon): It was Wayne Knight who turned into a balloon. Because of course it was.
My favorite part of this movie is that you don't realize Bill Murray is playing himself until about halfway through the movie. Like, yes, Michael Jordan is playing himself, but Wayne Night is playing a completely fictional character. Until they called him "Mr. Murray" I just assumed Bill was some random... friend
Bill Murray actually appears as himself in a lot of comedies, now that you mention it
I recall an offhand mention of how the producer got him involved (in the game, but also probably the movie in general). Also, the main boss guy calling him 'Dan Aykroyd' is comedy genius in my books.
Literally only one of the main actors plays a character and you're confused that Bill Murray is playing himself

Yes, precisely this.

Nice comedic timing!
to be fair, "challenging short aliens to basketball in a comedic attempt to outsmart them" is exactly a Looney Tunes thing to do
Bugs clowned on Gossamer by pretending to be a hair stylist one time, have you ever _seen_ Looney Tunes?

God, same
And the rap battle that contributes to the score.
Drew's actual knowledge of basketball makes the jokes in this video so much better:
"That's touching Lebron, but I'm gonna have to give you a shot clock violation because you've been holding the ball for four minutes"
195.201.34.87
Space Jam 2 heavily reminds me of the worst RUclips rewind videos. It’s like Warner Bros just took every successful media they had the rights to and mashed them into one very confusing storyline that mostly skips around but somehow had a happy ending.
