  • A young woman discovers her parents' therapy session.
TAPES is used with permission from Dara Katz and Betsy Kenney. Learn more at coolrightprodu....
Maddie is a young woman who discovers a cassette tape recording of her parents' couples therapy session from 30 years earlier, right before Maddie was born. In these tapes, Maddie hears something that discomfits and hurts her profoundly.
As she and her boyfriend head to the family home for Sunday night dinner, she keeps hearing the secret she discovered in her mind -- making for a powderkeg of a family meal.
Written and directed by Dara Katz and Betsy Kenney, this witty family dramedy has a veneer of urban sophistication, recalling filmmakers like Whit Stillman and Noah Baumbach. Like other comedies of manners, the storytelling is rich with stylized, often droll dialogue, and is attuned to how conversation reveals character and can prove cataclysmically eventful.
But it also has the beating heart of a family drama, exploring how layers of long-running tension and assumptions can shift with new revelations, sending up emotional earthquakes in the process. The family dynamic is established with sharp, intelligent writing, as quicksilver editing and seemingly casual camerawork capture small moments between the different family members.
Viewers quickly see the family is close-knit, with flourishes of eccentricity and absurdity, including the presence of a "life doula" brought to dinner by Maddie's sister Fran. The cast of actors -- led by Maddie Fischer as Maddie, and including veteran character actors Jay O. Sanders and Maryann Plunkett as her parents --hit these comic moments with clever, sly understatement.
But as Maddie looks at the details of her family home -- the pictures of her and her mother when she was a kid, for instance -- she can't help but see them differently. And when she explodes in resentment and hurt, she sets off a contagion of deep emotions and even deeper truths, with the collective ensemble hitting a perfect storm of both difficult emotion and comic outbursts.
Entertaining, relatable and unafraid of unvarnished emotion, TAPES seems light on its feet, with its quick rhythms and sharply observant eye for telling and ironic detail. Its wry sense of humor overlays a deeper minefield of hurts, as well as a secret history of pain -- layers that are handled with genuine commitment to feeling, but also with a certain nimbleness and eye for irony. Juxtaposing these tones in TAPES is a balancing act that touches upon the complexity of family life, gesturing at both the joy and importance of belonging, as well as the price we pay in silence and sometimes sadness to maintain familial equilibrium.

      @@summersunday8965
Regarding the first quote, I'd have thought that no-one wants to think of their Mother having erotic thoughts...which she'd need to write erotic fiction.
Obviously absurd, as no-one would exist if their parents hadn't got it on at some point.
However, I'd suggest that no-one wants to hear about it or think about it.
"I'm an empath" is one of those claims that a certain type of person may make, along with, "I can see/read your aura" or "I'm a spiritual medium, as was my Mother and Grandmother before her...all of the women on my Mother's side had the gift."
It's not easy to explain this type of person - the smug, self-righteous 'Mother Earth' who claims that they are highly sensitive or more attuned to the feelings of others, while simultaneously remaining oblivious to the fact that they irritate everyone that they meet.
Apologies if I'm not being very clear...I don't think that "being an empath" is a skill - almost everyone is able to empathise, (to varying degrees) with other people, (or animals) - it's part of what makes us human.
Again, I'm sorry if I'm not being clear - I understand that English is not your native language.

These are so well done. I was truly focused on the dad. . .he was calm the entire time, which made me realize this is the way this family functions routinely. Crazy confusion around the table, multiple conversations all at once, yet dinner continues, no yelling or fighting, just loud people wanting to be heard. I think the dad was really confused when things got quiet. Not the norm. And he was waiting for someone to break the ice . . . and the boyfriend did. Interesting that the boyfriend and father were placed side by side. Two very different generations, two very different takes on what was going on at the dinner table. The bf was extremely nervous and begin to cry during the emotional moment. As the dad begins to bust out laughing joined by the daughter. And all ends well. As it always does. For this family. Boyfriend ends it perfectly as he is laughing also "I dont know what's happening" 😂😂😂😂😂

    This is a masterpiece!
I love how Mom explains to her Daughters her existence as a whole person in this Universe.
Isn't it just like every human being to put themselves at the center of EVERYTHING?
In the beginning mankind believed the sun and Planets revolved around the Earth.
When we are young we think as babes and our needs are taken care of by our parents. We should grow wiser with maturity ,gaining the knowledge to reason that we aren't the center of EVERYTHING .
Our Parents are people too with the same feelings, dreams, infallibilities, and needs?
It isn't any business of children to pry into the intimacy or privacy of their Parents relationship.
Just as Children owe nothing to their Parents for raising them, loving and caring for them? They had no choice in being born.
Isn't it fair to say that a Parent only wants the best for their childs future and end up with an independent adult that lives a happy and prosperous life?
That can mean anything in the interpretation, as long as it's positive and good?
Madelin Jumped to conclusions and decides to be Angry!
    Dont spare her Mother's dignity?
Because she has no respect for her Mom.
She was selfishly rude, in front of her date, putting him in an awkward position, making him terribly uncomfortable. She was demanding and made an Ass of herself.
Her Mom was trying to get dinner on and Instead of offering to help? She shoves a box into her Mom's busy hands. She's rude and abusive ramping up the tension!
And the Life- Dula cracked me up when she says; " I'm an empath too"! I laughed even harder when the Daughter explains she just met her at the Juice-bar a few minutes before arriving! She's the total opposite of Madison?
I woke the house up at midnight laughing!
This made for a great topic of course for this short?
Great and fantastic Acting from all Cast Members.
The ending was hilarious. I love the personality differences of these Sisters! It just goes to show that it isnt always in the nurturing? Sometimes it's just nature?
I think Madeline said it but it had nothing to do with her Mom?
    Madeline was just Born Angry!

  • @jeremywithacamera235

. Family 'drama' doesn't smooth over that fast.
. if (younger?) daughter is getting this upset over tapes from 29 years ago...chances are the relationship between her and mom is already on rocky grounds.
    . Communication isn't this family's strong suit.
. It's nice to see they can laugh it off in the end. Seems to be a standard for them; have an aggressive conversation which somehow gets smoothed out in the end.
What I caught from this; Younger daughter hears a story about her mother talking about not wanting to be a parent (younger daughter thinks its about her). Turns out, parents had a miscarriage (though it wasn't clear to me if this was before the daughters or between them or even after them), which the parents kept to themselves all these years. ...in the end, it turned into a miscommunication and apparently, years of issues between mom and younger daughter.
My wife and I did 3 I.V.F.'s over 4 years.
    We lost 4 pregnancies
    We have 3 awesome boys.
We fully plan on telling them all the exhausting medical procedures we had to go through to have them and the losses along the way.

Compared to watching “The Bear” s2E7 intense and brilliant dysfunctional family dinner episode, this short film was a welcome dessert- another dysfunctional family hashing it out over a family meal. But just when you thought the mood was going to crash through the house, it veered into a release of tensions and onward to forgiveness and understanding.

This was so well written, with such unique characters! By far, the sister was my favorite!! The actress playing her was awesome! She was so funny at 3:30 when she high fived the dad, and at 4:12 when she decides to keep eating during the breathing exercises. 😆

Problems and hardships are like flavors
this family feels so lively , not because they’re perefect or that they love each other
It’s about how they react and interact between each other’s problems
