I was starting to think that the mother put this emotional stress on her family just to have them share secrets that were driving them apart, but the realization at the end that she had already taken the pills was just heartbreaking. The music overcoming the absolute silence left when the mother went to the bathroom only for it to become underlaid by sounds of wailing was phenomenal. Oh, and the fact that so many people at dinner were listening in and cared to help this woman by getting up and going to the bathroom themselves, or maybe even becoming so overwhelmed they had to leave the scene entirely or felt frozen in place is brilliant, especially to do during the end credits. The girl who was having a 32nd birthday being among these people was an especially nice touch. Comparing the celebration of her life with the tragedy of the family's loss highlights the real pain of it, all while having a hilarious waitress? This film deserves a sequel and many awards!
At the start the mother said she was reconsidering the pills becouse of possible "leaking". When she peed herself thats when the husband figured out that she had already taken the pills. It only later dawns on the daughters as they rush to her side. The dad just sits there, contemplating it all, now knowing his wife took the decision before the proper goodbye she had promised him that night. Its also possible that the reason she waited 6 months for the dinner wasnt just becouse of her thinking about suicide, but also the fact her children avoided contact. You can see on her face how hard this actualy was for her, the pain in her eyes the whole night knowing she already did what she did, hearing how her children will miss her but she refuses to live the tortured existance her mother endures. She loves her mother, but would never want that for herself, or to force the role of caretaker onto her loved ones as she resented it so;-;

Too close too home. My grandma had dementia and every time we would visit she would beg us to kill her. It's so sad people have to do this by themselves. Wouldn't wish this on anyone.
Befor the pandemic hit, Canada was considering passing legislation allowing people to have advanced directives stating at which point they wish for their lives to end. That would have allowed people with debilitating illnesses to live as long as they wished to without having to worry about becoming trapped in a body that didn't allow them to end it themselves. I doubt it will happen now so people will continue to be forced to either die early or live in horrific condition because they put it off a bit too long.

@@thecursedqueen9185 Yeah, but then again maybe her Mom was influenced by her own decision. I mean, if you're about to die, would you care about whether your kid gay or not?
Mom, looking at the menu : I'm going to kill myself tonight. Me, also looking through the menu : seems more like an after dinner, before dessert, kind of announcement.
Well, that escalated quickly. I thought the ending would be the mom forgot that she wanted to kill herself at the end, and the father reveals that this is the 10th time she has done this.
How nihilistically French this film!... 🤣...The dark resolution of this film during the credits, with the techno music overlay is head-spinningly sublime! Even the devinely miscast waitress is a pièce de rêsistance...Kudos to the entire crew and cast for this story!... 👍👍👍
I honestly thought the mother was the B word from the beginning, but she actually cared for her family. According to my interpretation, she chose a public place to disclose her “plan” in order to create witnesses and rule out investigations in case anybody suggests that foul play was involved in her demise. She does say she doesn’t want to die in the toilet of a Chinese Restaurant, but ultimately, she does so; I have watched people go through a love-hate relationship with the place they call home after their loved one dies in it. The father, and possibly, Nana as well would have to go back to living in that place where she died, so she preserves the “sanctity” of their home. She wanted to not inflict, at least, any tangible burdens on her family, hence her actions (of course, the emotional burden of it all would be the greatest)
Idk why I was so confused by the ending until I read the comments. I thought the mom was lying and the daughters realized that they didn't want caretaker duties after all and escaped the restaurant together.
Honestly what I take from this is to appreciate every moment with your parents and family. You can be mad at them or grow apart but when your parents or family member are going to pass away soon you'll wish you had more time to spend with them and to wish you had more time to show how much you love them and appreciate them. Anyone reading this appreciate the time you spend with your parents and family because when they past away you can never have that time with them back. Love your parents and family members now before it's too late.
Excellent film, but brutal viewing. The emotionally neglectful controlling mother twisting the knife in her daughters' hearts one final time - I found it hard to empathise with her. Not a fan of the passive dad either.
Watching it the second time, and I realized they already hint the alzheimer in the first scene when the mother ask berenice twice and the daughters kinda confused... wawwww
Man I wish I had half the mother's chill and resolve when I'm about to die/kill myself. Then again it also takes a certain disregard of their feelings to proceed regardless. Gonna remember this when it's my turn. Poor nana watching her family fragment and collapse under the weight their escalating burdens and all as she tries to get her feelings across. That dad's dark humor lol. I can also sympathise with how resigned he was all through the ordeal. Watching everything around him burn and collapse as he lacked the strength and resolve to stop it. The family was wonderfully dysfunctional too with how they were forced to accept the escalating odds and the feelings they chose to bury before this incident. That waitress was also phenomenal with how she just continues on with her job even with all the drama. Just goes to show that life still goes on even amidst the tragedy unfolding and it's also reminiscent in reality with how a lot of people only notice much less help when the warning signs were well beyond intervention. Another brilliant short film Omeleto. The happy endings in some were nice but I quite like the twist in this one since not all get happy endings or want to and sometimes that's just fine by me or I'm way too resigned to care at that point. Still, it's good to see other people making different choices even if it's arguably bad.
Also how little shits people give about peoples actual situation if they can just be the "Hero" that saves them when it goes like they didn't want it to.
What absolutely brilliant acting! The waitress was exceptional. Kudos, Omeleto, for an outstanding film. Tragic, painful, touching and hilariously funny all at once.
She decided to go with dignity... I admire her and I would choose the same way if I was in her situation (and maybe I will some day if that happens...) 🙌 "Death is a natural part of life." ~ Master Yoda
So judging by tre screams in the end she does it the bathroom? And why I fell like Nona doesn't feel like going with her to the next side. I felt so bad for the grandma... she is left alone in the end.
12:57 if you do it to the grandma it's murder, she clearly doesn't want to do it. And even if she did, I'm pretty sure it's still a crime to assist in suicide.
Mother repeats the phrase "We still have things to say to each other" but with a slightly different meaning each time. Sometimes it refers to the past, sometimes it refers to the future. The waitress forgot about the rice - then tried to paper it over with a joke. Lead balloon.
The girl who plays Bérénice is really, really good. Everybody is amazing but both her and the mother have the most dimension. BTW the translation doesn't do justice to the dialogues. They are hilarious!
The reason why this short film only works in a Chinese restaurant is because the decorative wooden bridge is needed to show the mother has crossed to the other side.
Am I the only one who was left wanting to know more about what grandma was thinking and trying to say??
That's exactly why dementia/alzheimers is so awful, and terrifying. They nailed it.
I stuck around until after the credits rolled to see if grandma would do or say anything... I think she died in her chair
I want them to make a sequel. It could be called "dementia and dysfunction collide"!!

Fortunately they didn't mind in the slightest when she did come out of the closet.
@@thecursedqueen9185 Yeah, but then again maybe her Mom was influenced by her own decision. I mean, if you're about to die, would you care about whether your kid gay or not?
@@thecursedqueen9185 ... I think they were distracted by her mother's plan
The entire exchange during "Les Desserts" was hilarious 😂
Mom, looking at the menu : I'm going to kill myself tonight.
Me, also looking through the menu : seems more like an after dinner, before dessert, kind of announcement.
me: you need peace and tranquility to have food properly.
le customers at this restaurant: buddy, we operate on a much higher level.
Definitely my fave. Perfect blend of tragedy and comedy with superb acting.
Well, that escalated quickly.
I thought the ending would be the mom forgot that she wanted to kill herself at the end, and the father reveals that this is the 10th time she has done this.
Beginning to realize this is on my Top 5 Movies list! Superb acting!!!
This was brilliantly done.
How nihilistically French this film!... 🤣...The dark resolution of this film during the credits, with the techno music overlay is head-spinningly sublime! Even the devinely miscast waitress is a pièce de rêsistance...Kudos to the entire crew and cast for this story!... 👍👍👍
Ive come back to watch this film at least once a month for the past 9 months
First time commenting but ive practically watched all omoleto vids and i have to say, THIS is one of the best... What a shocker
Idk why I was so confused by the ending until I read the comments. I thought the mom was lying and the daughters realized that they didn't want caretaker duties after all and escaped the restaurant together.
Great dialogue! Dark and funny!
"See? We have things to say to eachother." ❤️
Nana had me crying 😭😂😂😂😂
CLAC
There comes a time in everyone's life when they realise they have run out of time.
There are those who need to be reminded.
Excellent film, but brutal viewing. The emotionally neglectful controlling mother twisting the knife in her daughters' hearts one final time - I found it hard to empathise with her. Not a fan of the passive dad either.
Watching it the second time, and I realized they already hint the alzheimer in the first scene when the mother ask berenice twice and the daughters kinda confused... wawwww
This is done so well in all aspects. Overwhelming!
This is one of my favorite films on this channel. I can watch it multiple times ❤️
wait i thought the daughters went to the restroom to stop their mother from killing herself.....were they not able to stop her? also the bgm is fire
Yeah🤔
Pretty sure she took the pills before, and thought she'd make it home in time.
@@letopizdetz that makes sense, thank you!
She already took the pills, and she was the one that ‘leaked’
@@GedenWilbur That too. I've watched in another channel that it might be a sign of covert narcissism.
What do you mean by "when it's my turn?" Are you alright?
I’ve watched this 3 times over time. It’s really quite brilliant
What absolutely brilliant acting! The waitress was exceptional. Kudos, Omeleto, for an outstanding film. Tragic, painful, touching and hilariously funny all at once.
She decided to go with dignity... I admire her and I would choose the same way if I was in her situation (and maybe I will some day if that happens...) 🙌
"Death is a natural part of life." ~ Master Yoda
@Omeleto, you never disappoint.
What a deep and hilarious masterpiece.
The dark humor that you find in French films is a bit unlike other nationalities' dark humor.
Man c’était un des short films les plus intenses que j’ai jamais vu de toute ma vie damn
I didn't catch the drift of the ending (lost in subtitles) but overall a brilliant short.
Is it guilty to laugh my ass off? Cuz I have been laughing the whole time!.......
Damn this was incredible.
Everybody started running...They don't want to be witnesses to what they heard 🤣
I love this channel so much.
Wow, another great meaningful one!
this is the best one
Fantastique!! Humourous, touching, darkk and serious. The waitress is a star!!
I don't expect myself to watch their videos at this early I was just scrolling down yt to find this of course it's omeleto so it hs to be good
Excellent. Beautifully acted. It was funny & serious. Cast was brillant.
On en parle du jeu d’acteur tout de même ?! Juste incroyable j’ai adoré 😻
I’m so slow, I only realised she took the pills after reading the comments 🥲
at first i was like meh, then i was like WHOA, then i was like mmmh, then i was like oh o.k. i get it...bravo.
The music at the end is 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Je me demandais quand je verrais un chef d'oeuvre au niveau du jeu d'acteurs,et tout ce qu'il y a autour est absolument genial!Merci!
So judging by tre screams in the end she does it the bathroom? And why I fell like Nona doesn't feel like going with her to the next side. I felt so bad for the grandma... she is left alone in the end.
Nana is the best!! La grand-mère est la meilleure!!!
nice 32th birthday, happy birthday to the neighbor table
brilliant short
Quelle belle manière d’aborder le drame de une famille disfuntionel.
👍👍
Wow. This one was crazy 🤪! Good acting!
12:57 if you do it to the grandma it's murder, she clearly doesn't want to do it. And even if she did, I'm pretty sure it's still a crime to assist in suicide.
doesn't really matter if you're dead lol
Excellent!
I feel curious to know what they said at the end with the shouting. I can't understand French well
Watching this the second time. This time with a friend... The disconnect --- hilariously depressing! Lol
The acting was truly amazing ❤️👍
The Nana is the best
