WHAT if your best friend weighed 10,000lbs and was able to crush a watermelon under her foot? Acrobat and animal handler Lauryn Murray, 33, from Florida, grew up in a circus and spends almost every day caring for Lady Essex, a huge Asian elephant. Lauryn says the two are 'as close as a human and an elephant can be’. Amazingly, Lady Essex plays fetch with Lauryn’s dogs and even likes to play with her three-year-old son, who helps give her a bath.

A possible problem here is that elephants are happiest as part of a group, especially considering this elephant is female. What we really have to consider is that would this animal be happier in the wild with a herd or in captivity with or without other elephants. In my estimation, the least amount of suffering and the most amount of happiness can be achieved with a herd in good captive conditions. As for the other options, its up for debate. I can only say that some folks don’t consider the amount of suffering experienced by animals in the wild and make appeals to nature that are at the very least questionable

Stick or no stick, elephants are not meant to live with human families, they're meant to live with other elephants on a LOT of land. Even if they're orphans, they should be put into wild life nursery refugees for baby elephants. I can't believe this woman is fighting for families to be able to own elephants. She may be very kind to her elephant, but many others won't be. Not to mention, how many would buy a baby elephant, then get rid of it later because they're a lot of work, this is something you can't do. You need to be there 24/7 when you have an elephant. The babies can die of heartbreak if you leave them for just a couple days, even if there are other people there caring for them when you're gone. Fighting for humans to own elephants like dogs... what a ridiculous thing to fight for.

gingersleep I don’t have an opinion on this one, necessarily. I’m saying that it’s funny how, on any given video about and animal in captivity, there’s practically a war zone in the comment section with people on both sides making claims about the animal’s wellbeing with no acknowledgement of the fact that they could be wrong.
Some animals are better off in captivity. But many more are better off in their natural environments. It goes both ways.
But honestly, I was just a joke. Not really meant to be taken seriously.

"The only way certain species are going to continue is if we reach out and actually help them."
This woman is completely right. When it comes to elephants, they are very social creatures like us. It may be, in the future, that the only way to save the species is to start keeping them tamed as parts of households or circuses. Integrating them may be the best way to save the species.
They're being poached in their natural habitats and attempts at replenishing their population in the wild are failing because they don't reproduce as much as other species (same problem with Pandas really). It looks like elephants are much safer in circuses, with loving families like this one, and amongst human populations as work animals.

When a person can take care of an elephant, they can put the elephant's needs first and give it an amazing life. Elephants in the "wild" (a place that doesn't exist any more) are struggling. Bullhooks are actually called "the Ankus", "Takaw", "Guide" or "Elephant Guide" and it's a husbandry tool used with elephants for thousands of years - It's used to guide the elephant. All animals that are with people have to have some sort of husbandry tools - Dogs have leashes, Horses have reins, etc. Elephants are very large and smart. The guide is merely an extension of the handler's arm and uses touch or direction cues to guide the elephant. Sadly yes, in the hands of unprofessional people, it can be misused - but so can other animal husbandry tools. Don't judge. She obviously doesn't mistreat this elephant.

Well, it might be an amazing animal, but an animal nonetheless. Absolute trust like: "I can put my head under his/hers foot and know nothing bad will happen or playful playing etc", are stuff for the movies or news horror stories.
You treat these majestic beasts with the caution, love and respect they deserved if owned. It doesn't mean in the slightest that said person loves or cares for the animals any less if is "enforcing" rules/boundaries, possible scolding, being strict, be in control etc, because we all can guess what can happen in merely a split sec. (we have read about domesticate house dogs with no biting tendencies, biting/damage faces of young kings) etc. Some case were with provocation, were others more in line with unintentional/accident most likely 'cause adult supervision lacking.
And mostly those were dogs on leashes too. Another example: Let' take for example an even temperament, no non- violent dog(Hint: GR or LR). Even those some-active large, friendly, non aggressive type of dogs, can always by accident an accident, be it by playing with kids and 'cause of the power and large size, situations like that occur often..
So, the woman in the video she might even love or care even more than most because she actually see those animals as to how they really are and not what we wanted them to be/mean for us.
Even in dwindling numbers, some mothers even to this day provide some form of "physical" disciplines in similar means like the woman in the video but more inline with current human societies standards lets say. E,g the iconic shoes throw or chase with it and wooden soup spoons. Kinda funny unless you are on the receiving side.
So? Are those two mothers trying to discipline their kids(in no violent way mostly and for a good cause at least to them) and for sure without any malice, do those actions imply they love or care for their kids any less?
Even with the the few exceptions here and there which aren't even worth even mentioning, the answer is No.
Back on topic about the Bullhook which is already banned in several US sates, while been considered quite inhumane by mostly activist ppl.
I admit I didn't notice it at first. Only here in the comments. I have no prior knowledge of the Lauryn Murray/Lady Essex the Elephant arrangment but if the bullhook isn't used or even abusively at at, which seems th case to me, well, considering Lady Essex's Circus training/upbringing, that bullhook might be there, just because Lady Essex learned/knows to behave with that in sight/around.?

The stick with the small rounded hook at the end is a tool every Mahut uses. Its purpose is to grab the elephant by the ear if the Mahut feels he/she is getting stressed or scared (for some reason it appeases the elephant). Some assholes use it to beat the elephant but that's not for what it was made for. Kind of like a prong collar for dog, it looks bad but it's not a torture instrument if properly used ;)

The lady uses a power house and the elephant is unfazed, I doubt a little stick could do anything.
Edit: I also found that good trainers tap behind the ear with the bull hook and elephant skin is around 1 inch thick.

Ok I see a lot of judgmental comments on here. First, I am not supporting her or going against her either but I would like to share ma thoughts on this issue.
    1. People who keep saying she is abusing the animal, first need to realize this is not a wild elephant anymore, its been a family animal for decades and if she leaves it back in the wild, it will be easy prey and won't survive.
    2. On her using the bull-hook and telling the elephant to stand up etc, it is a circus elephant, yeah am against that too but now she is not hurting the animal, also it has already been trained like that over the years, so she is just playing with the elephant.
    3. Elephants eat a lot and do a lot of physical activity, taking care of the elephant is a big task. From this short video, I do have a feeling she is not harming the elephant in anyways. Also its important she takes care of herself , as if she or anyone in her family gets harmed by the elephant, most likely we humans will put the elephant down.
4.I am not in favor of domestication of animals at all , but look at what we humans have done to this world, we have destroyed forests, destroyed nature, put species in danger of extinction. So now if someone is showing some love to animals even domesticating them, am fine with it, as first we don't have much wild left and if things go the same direction, wont be long before we will be killing each other in name of some stupidity, oh DEJA Vu it already is happening. So in the meantime let's appreciate if people are showing real love to animals/nature. PEACE AND PROSPER

Here is more information on the bullhook:
