PHENOMENON (1996) - Thomas Newman - Soundtrack Score Suite

  • Okay, let's first say this: Phenomenon is a delightful score by Newman, one of his very best. If you like the lush string sound from Little Women, Up Close and Personal or How to Make an American Quilt, you're sure to like this one. The main theme is a gorgeous pastoral melody for strings and clarinets that segues into some pretty energetic accoustic and eletric guitar playing (similar to certain tracks of The Horse Whisperer, let's call it Newman's countryside style). The rest of the score is equally elegant, with the great Oscar and Lucinda-like track Shout in the Sky, the rhythmic Orchard-track with its dynamic percussion and the many soothing tracks with soft piano and string melodies. It works marvelous in the movie and offers a delightful listening experience on its own. Of course, this score has not been officially released on CD. The only available source is a 23-minute promotional cassette compiled by Mr Newman that was sent out to the Academy's Music Branch voting members. At some point Varèse Sarabande had plans to release the score (most likely coupled with another Newman-project, like they did with American Buffalo and Threesome) but those plans never materialized. The promo cassette was the source for a bootleg-CD-R, which can be found on the collector's market. For now, this is the only way to obtain a copy of Newman's score, and that's too bad because Phenomenon is undoubtably one of his very best and most popular scores.

There is 'mystery' in not knowing who people truly are. Imagination gives credit to the undeserving. The '90's was just the beginning of what's wrong today. Like when the pavement meets the dirt road. Social media took all that mystery away. Now we get to see collectively the true depravity of mankind as in the days of 'real' old. What civilization could have been was just an illusion after all.

Thomas Newman - my all-time favorite. Takes me to heaven everytime. I accidentally listened to Newman and the healing "Tibetan Bowls" here on youtube and they were practically one and the same! No wonder I love them both. It's incredible that he hasn't been recognized by the Academy Awards... jealousy is the only thing I can think of. Paul Newman was never recognized either, I don't think. The real "greats" are so often "overlooked" by their peers! But not by us, and thank God they keep producing no matter what. Changed my life listening to this music, that's for sure.

I agree with Catherine Todd. I think even hardened men will get tears at the way the music has been created and paced. Its like Life itself...A feeling of rush, desolation, Love happening, introspection, deep and touching sadness, and finally a part that is realization. How can we ever Thank you enough Dear Thomas Newman. May the Angels Bless You!

This gorgeous score leads me to thoughts of Aaron Copland. Thomas Newman's music is so beautiful, so American and so colorful and all encompassing globally, too, in so many of his scores. It is such a shame that he never wins any awards for his music. He's my favorite film score composer by far.

    • @stephenfletcher5391
      @stephenfletcher5391 7 лет назад +1

+Armando De Aliaga I think many movies these days are very afraid of the topic of God, but Phenomenon is certainly a "spiritual" movie and a very good movie. But with Quantum Physics and the evidence of so much outside of what we can measure, it is tough not to see parallels between God and what is shown in the Phenomenon movie.
George Malley: I think I'm what everyone can be. I'm the possibility. The human spirit, that's the challenge, the voyage, the expedition.

    • @Cerdo_asqueroso

OK....now compare Phenomenon with other movies where you find God in a more explicit way (The Book of Eli, Do you believe?, The time changer, etc)

    • @stephenfletcher5391
      @stephenfletcher5391 7 лет назад +1

+Armando De Aliaga I do not see very many comparisons between Phenomenon and the Book of Eli, very different movies and if you ask me Phenomenon is a emotional drama that has far more to do with God and spirituality than the Book of Eli. Phenomenon is a deep emotional movie, the Book of Eli is a action movie which has far more focus on the physical than the emotional, intellectual or spiritual.
The main thing the two movies have in common is that they mix fact and fiction, the physical with the metaphysical etc. I think Phenomenon is the far better movie.

Ok, I will say that this is one of my favorite film scores of Thomas Newman, and it's also one of my goto films to view when the ULF interference gets too tough to handle. At least once every year since it's release.
That said, I have not viewed nor listened to this in over 3 years. Because I was worried it would not be here when I came back... after you went missing in action, and/or since they shut you down, (Schnurpselbacke1), In fact... because of YT and the pressure from The Man to cease creative inspiration, I too stopped producing videos, for fear of the same thing happening to me.
Hundreds of hours (and more) can be consumed in the making of a video to present on YT for (no monetary gain), just artistic appreciation by those of us who try and know the pain of having your name, work and sense of purpose be assassinated... for what, music, and film appreciation.
Sorry, for the rant, but I just want to say thank you Schnurpselbacke1m, for your tenacity. I know what this labor of love means to you, as all your others have been, when they were taken from you, and I hope your work and you are not treated that way, (again).

+Schnurpselbacke1; Let there be many times returning to this place created by Thomas Newman, those who created the vehicle, writer: Gerald de Pego, Director:Jon Turtletaub and most definitely not last... this heartfelt effort of video-graphical representation of a very cool sentiment, as is this work.

I found 13 gorgeous minutes on RUclips here, and supposedly it is just a the part that was submitted to the Academy Award. A fabulous 13 minutes have been uploaded here. Why just Thomas Newman's whole score isn't available is beyond me. It is incredible, as always.
I'm not sure what the rest of the songs listed here on the Amazon CD are from - I didn't notice them in the film, although of course I was only listening for Newman.

According to the story... you could... maybe you can too. Because as George said, you don't need a tumor [it just helped him to get there].

I miss simple movies with a little touch of magic and mystique like this one. I miss how film scores used to compliment films, not overtake them.

Sure, I can think of 3 or 4 ways. The best is to buy the album if you can find it, but it was not easy for me to find. I have it on mp3 now, if you are still looking for it let me know.

It is interesting to notice that there are NO computers, no TVs (not even in the bar), no satellite systems, and very little electronic links to the grid.
