The highly acclaimed Sam Mendes adaptation of a graphic novel, 2002's Road to Perdition was Oscar bait in the making, placing Tom Hanks, Paul Newman, and a strong supporting cast in a compelling story of organized crime in 1930's Chicago. Hanks plays a hitman of high talents, but when he becomes the victim when the majority of his family is executed by the jealous son of his employer, he and his remaining young son go on a journey of revenge, discovery, and healing in the setting's gloomy and dark underworld. The successful collaboration between Mendes and composer Thomas Newman continued with Road to Perdition. It was their pairing just a few years prior for American Beauty that earned them both the most heightened critical and popular recognition of their careers, despite an upset of the score at the Oscars. Newman's music for the 2000 hit had taken on a life of its own, with a second generation of his fans becoming attached to his style of extremely eclectic, low-key tones that would continue in Erin Brockovich and Pay it Forward. Whether Newman was experimenting with these kinds of synthetic scores or building upon his more largely established fan base with his complex orchestral works, he always concentrated heavily on character development and tackled setting and time as a secondary task. While Road to Perdition may be a 1930's Chicago gangster film in setting, the core of its drama is still rooted in the same genre of family tragedy that made American Beauty into such an intoxicating experience for many audiences. The difference, though, is that Newman folds many of the intriguing stylistic mannerisms from his quirky scores of the era into a much larger orchestral scope for Road to Perdition, taking the best of both worlds and wrapping them into a far broader and admirable, Academy Award nominated effort. Not only was Road to Perdition a return for Newman to the vastly complicated orchestral works of his past, but it also features some of his most dynamic and successful character development in the 2000's.
Because the film's personality is conveyed in a somber tale of loss and revenge, Thomas Newman's score is no walk in the park. Not only was his aim to compose music to accompany the tragic events on screen, but to also illuminate the thinking of the primary character, a challenge in any such environment. Thus, his music for Road to Perdition is jumpy, unorthodox, melancholy, and colorful all in one.
Road to Perdition is a somber, though fascinating score that will appeal greatly to listeners who were eager for the composer's return to the dramatic depth of The Shawshank Redemption.

One of my Favourite Soundtracks ever. What a Fantastic Film.Very Underated for the Acting and Camerawork
Probably one of the best soundtracks of all time.
A father is a special man. When I listen to this now it has such a different meaning from when I heard it for the first time. My father is fighting a battle with Alzheimer's and he was and will always be my hero. He supported us so we never went a day without the necessities, and I hear this song, and I think of the Chicago blizzard of 67' and how he carried me in the snow when his car was stuck. The snow fell like moth balls and he walked miles to protect me from the elements. He was and is a man. A father's love is unyielding, relentless, unconditional and I hear everything when I listen to this. The emotion I felt and am currently feeling as I watch his decline and desire to be the man he was of yesteryear makes me fall fast to my memories and I need the music to heal me, him, and most of all our hearts.
+jazzytds, thank you for your wonderful, moving words.
+SchnurpselsBacke I wrote from my heart. Not really sure what else to do. Thank you.
On November 17th at 3:35 am my father lost his battle to Alzheimer's, and thankfully he went quietly in his sleep. I am so lucky to have had someone to teach me all the wonderful lessons that he did. He is missed more than he will ever know. RIP
Sorry for your loss...the fact that you can write words in that way and show emotion like that means your father did a great job in bringing you up to the man you are today I'm sure. All the best and hope are doing well. Ref this sound track....its incredibly powerful and moving...a true musical genius is Thomas Newman.
For the very same reasons I liked this movie
Tom Hanks, Paul Newman, Daniel Craig, Jude Law. This film had no other end but to be what it is......a masterpiece! It was a very sad day when we lost Paul Newman, this was one of his best. His talent was a gift that carried through until the "curtain".
Tom Hanks went above and beyond for this piece of art and so did Paul Newman they were unforgettable in this epic piece of work
Let's not forget Jude Law.
Yes, their characters were most alike, basically “good” generous men, who murdered for business without hesitation. Both went all the down “The Road to Perdition.” Because in was absolutely necessary, Sullivan carried Little Mike part way down that Road, but successfully sent him back.
how the f*ck did this music not win an Oscar !? It is magnificent.
I always thought many Oscars were Rigged.
Please give Thomas Newman an Oscar. He richly deserves it.
Yeah, Newman truly deserves more attention. Wish the Academy would quit snubbing such a great composer. Definitely deserves an Oscar! Deserves a million if i had my way lol
Something about Thomas Newman's music makes your heart clench for some reason....music is truly food for the soul
The most under-rated film composer today. This, "American Beauty", "The Shawshank Redemption" and not to mention "Six Feet Under" makes Newman one of my favorites. Give this man an Oscar damn it!
I don’t know if you’ve heard the soundtrack from “less than zero”, but I think it’s a more beautiful soundtrack, without the breadth of this soundtrack. The number of different songs here is much more epic than in the earlier movie. But the pieces that reman in LTZ are hauntingly beautiful. Emotions of great sadness, desperation, and optimism at one time. Meanwhile the pieces here are quite beautiful! I guess Neumann just does a great job of capturing the storyline of this piece with those Irish undertones in many of the songs, whereas LTZ is a tragic movie, from beginning to end, and the music called for was tragic but beautiful, and that haunting theme.
Hell I don’t know what I’m saying, they’re both masterpieces, listen to the other if you haven’t.
I just saw this movie for the first time about six months ago. I know. I know.
BEEN BUSY !!
Anyway this is without a doubt the best Hanks movie I've ever seen. Checking up on any awards now. Road to perdition should have won every category. Period !! Music is stunning.
Thomas Newman makes me cry.Beautiful pieces. He sure had a lot of feelings and emotions in his life in order to make such beautiful music.
could you please listen to my both songs and give me your opinion please.I se you have good taste about music
aeternus Yes,i watched your piano song.It is very relaxing not yet perfect but you are in the right direction.Keep practicing and do more videos, tons of songs, the more you practice the better you become ;)
Touching and sad film, great cast and brilliant and emotional music accompanying. Put simply a master piece.
One of the great movies, with music to match, epic.
Great movie, great cast, great story, great acting... and TN's music elevated it to a classic.
The mastery of correlation between picture and song is truly shown throughout his works. I dare say i could not see a life without the likes of such men as Sir Newman.
Definitely, one of the most beautiful and elegant pieces of music ever written for the silver screen: soaring, contemplative, with great emotional range, and well deserving of an Oscar (which it didn't get).
aptly reviewed! Bollywood movie scorers should take a leaf from this...
beautiful
PIERRE FRANCIS Oscars have missed a lot that they shouldn't
This will be remembered not like a lot of Oscar winners I don't know what politics were involved and I can't remember anything from the same couple of years the Oscars were awarding for that had such an impact .can anyone tell me who it went to and what the music was for ?
This probably the best piece of music you are ever likely to hear, as much as I dislike Tom hanks, there's no denying he fits into any acting role, but that music just sends me into another place.
One of my Favorite Movies. Gorgeous Film. and a song that can stay within your heart for all eternity.
This movie was dark...but Newman's soundtrack made it a unique story.touching with regards to his son and him. I'm Irish and family is everything😊
There’s a lot of heartache in this music and movie but it’s so beautiful in the way that it relates it’s sorrow and gives the pain a voice
An absolutely gorgeous score, i look forward to hearing Thomas Newmans music every time i watch this film.
Road To Perdition is one of my favourite movies, too. I first took notice of Thomas Newman when I saw the movie the first time and heard that amazing soundtrack. I had to know who did the music and from this moment I began to be a fan of Thomas newman. I listened to many other soundtracks of TN and they are good as well but the Road To Perdition ost is still the best ost I've ever heard.
This movie really gripped me. But the soundtrack moves me. One of the most compelling and relaxing soundtracks of all time :)
This music and the movie have come with me wherever I go...it's eerie at times ....sad...heart pounding...thought provoking..stoic...play this while I'm dying.....
One of the greatest all time movies and soundtrack.
The soundtrack for this movie is just as spectacular as the movie itself. I especially like Road to Chicago and Cathedral.
One of the best music pieces ever!
To have your child love you enough to see things through in a time of need is something very special indeed. Though many parents today do things that hurt their children may we have love, install love onto our children.
This movie brings those feelings to the surface. I love my father for the way he raised me & mother who love me in ways I cannot mention. This sound track at the end brings it all home. May I have the strength to bring up my son with decency, clarity, moral values, & love.
Peace 2 ya
To my Father Luis Gadea Barba. Thanks For All Dad I love You Forever!!! Cheers and Life On !!!
I can’t believe I keep coming back to this soundtrack it has captured me and won’t let go
The movie describes the world we live in today. Where money means the most. Life, Human Life isn't worth a red penny. And it makes me cry.
Such beautiful music! Thomas Newman is my favourite composer of all time. He never fails to touch my soul deeply with his wonderful music. Thank you
Thomas Newman is MY favorite composer, too. 🎼
The intro has to be one of the most beautiful soundtrack I've ever heard in the last 20 years.
I write to Newman. God, I need to meet this guy. He's partly responsible for the evolution of my characters. Bucket List stuff.
Awesome Victoria I know exactly what you mean.
Road to Perdition a great movie, with one of the most beautiful music themes
A powerful and underaclaimed movie. Outstanding performances by Tom Hanks and Tyler Hoechlin as his son. Thomas Newman's music drives the score and delivers throughout the entire film. Without question, one of the best movie scores out there.
Amazing! The music crept into my bones, and gave me a chill... still does!
STUNNING! Every time I listen to this song, the shift that happens at 3:07 just gets to me. I would love to be a fly on the wall to hear and watch Newman's process of building a song, setting it to film, conducting - I would love to watch a documentary on film composers and how they do what they do!!
Absolutely! I remember watching this film for the first time, after it was over I sat there in thought and then when it reverted back to the menu page, it looped this track. I was almost hypnotized by it. I found myself just letting run, over and over. At approx. 4:10, the piano begins its affair with the strings.....truly amazing.
A most wonderful and peaceful Sunday background track . . . A story of real life; the good, the bad, the aftermath . . . Endings we can't always choose, its just the way it goes in winter.
This score is fantastic, gentle, peaceful & yet it takes you to a place where you used to be in the past. Wonderful movie, interesting how a man in his position does what he has to, to provide for his family and what happens to him when he becomes the hunted one. That life always leads to death in the end.
Great score & a great post
Peace 2 ya
I like the movie. I watch it at subsequent times just to listen to the beautiful soundtrack. Hauntingly beautiful.
i listen to this every night and now i'm not able to fall asleep without it
It took me to a long long time ago...... to my grandpa's life stories in the first years of the twentieth century and world war 1 era..... So nostalgic....
Brill isn't it!? Thomas Newman is amazing
"When people ask me if Michael Sullivan was a good man, or if there was no good in him at all, I tell them....he was my father."
What a great movie, and the soundtrack is just beautiful!
It is no coincidence that some of my favorite movies, Road To Perdition, The Shawshank Redemption, American Beauty, Skyfall, Revolutionary Road, Meet Joe Black and many others, all feature music penned by the great Thomas Newman.
Amazing music, but then I've always loved Thomas Newman's soundtracks. This is as close to a perfect RUclips video as I have ever seen.
I agree with what is said here, one of the top Scores in Movie history. Puts me in a peaceful place.
I so love this movie and the soundtrack is awesome too!
Trivia: Thomas Newman's music comes from the ACTUAL Dream World that only exists in our minds. He is an American Icon in my views.
Não há melhor compositor cinematográfico no mundo hoje. So falta o Oscar da academia que deveria lhe ter sido entregue este ano por Saving Mr. Banks.. Mas road to perdition é das melhores. Extraordinario.
Absolutamente impresionante y emotiva. Absolutly Fantastic !
11 mins on.... ABSOLUTELY STUNNING!!!!!!

Este sr, sabe transporta a cualquier portal del pasado o presente ataves de los recuerdos bellla sinfonía????!! Lo. Aplaudo
Can someone please tell me how Thomas Newman was robbed of an Oscar for "Road to Perdition", which is one of his MOST BELOVED SOUNDTRACKS HE HAS EVER COMPOSED!?!!! 🎼🏆
I love Thomas Newman he saved my life
Great music for a great movie.....
It´s simply called "Road To Perdition", track 26 on the soundtrack album. :)
I never thought of Daniel Craig on the same level with Hanks, Newman, Law his performance in Perdition was memorable good worthy of the elite shared company.
Yes, it´s called "Cathedral" (track 22) on the Original Motion Picture Soundtrack. :)
thank you so much.. I was looking for this.. :).. this is awesome ...
LIFTING INSTRUMENTAL, REAL CLASSIC, HATS OFF
Thomas Newman has been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Score 15 times, according to his Wikipedia page--and never won! Outrageous. He has won numerous other awards (a few Grammy's, an Emmy)--but this oversight must bother him because his father won the Oscar for Best Original Score not once but 9 times! How ironic. He's a cousin of Randy Newman...
Hans Zimmer + Thomas Newman = Female Eargasm
Why limit it to female? ;) You're right though about eargasm. :P
Beautiful.
awesome, beautiful...
Thx, for this great post!
Yes, you´re absolutely right! My apologies...
Breathtaking
for those who do have faith, the fact that they wake up every day, see the stars at night, feel the sun on their skin, see the flowers in bloom, hear the birds singing is all evidence of a higher being who cares for them, and that he could very well take it all from us because we don't deserve it. wind is invisible, but you can feel its effects, oxygen is invisible but you know it's there and it keeps you alive.
All I can do is tell you that that piece of music is called 'The Farm' and that the film's composer is Thomas Newman
in love
Mr. P. Newman
Newman é um cara foda. Acompanho seu trabalho desde Real Genius (Acadêmia de Gênios). A trilha de Beleza Americana nem se fala.
Genius in it's purist form
Damn it Newman, you did it again!
And 'The Green Mile', and MANY other brilliant films. And also, in terms of 'Six Feet Under', he only did the opening title theme and the OCCASIONAL piece for a few episodes
Superb!
So excellent.
I'm on the great side of RUclips again... and I LIKE IT!!
1:28: the most beautiful melody.
On The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack this track is called "Rock Island, 1931".
Perfect!!!!
lovely thanks
love it sad music
4:15, my favorite :) So haunting..
I couldn't agree more !!!
so beautiful.
