Did y'all notice Elvis Costello and Bruce Springsteen behind him on guitar? This was an iconic concert. KD Lang, Jennifer Warner and Bonnie Raitt on background vocals, as well!
Jackson Browne on background, too!
@@brendaschmitt2281 Yes! How could I forget?
On top of all that, that's Elvis Presley's entire live band backing them all up - James Burton on guitar, Glenn D. Hardin on Piano, Jerry Scheff on upright "doghouse" bass, and the late, great Ronnie Tutt on drums.
you have great eyes. Roy was respected by artists from all genres for sure.
"You know what a love letter is?" Great line....
Jay & Amber, you'll love his "Crying" and "Only the Lonely (Know the Way I Feel)"!!! A one-of-a-kind voice!!
Yep these 2 awesome too!
Yes I agree!
DEFINITELY the KD Lang/Roy Orbison duet on Crying is out of this world, but I also really love KD's version singing it solo. I feel like she holds back a little when she duets with Roy.
I was surprised at Ray Stevens performance of Crying on his 1970 TV show.
Don McLean did a decent cover of it, too.
When Elvis Presley says you have the greatest voice ever ! That’s a hell of a compliment that’s what he said about Roy Orbison
I remember getting ready for work one morning in December of 1988, the man on the radio announced that Roy Orbison had died. I stood there and cried, just couldn’t believe he was gone.
I remember that day also, very sad day indeed. 😢
And he died at 52 years old from a heart attack, because he smoked 80 cigarettes a day. He could have lived 20 or 30 years longer, it's hard to believe it's been 35 years since he died. He had the most beautiful voice and his music will live on forever. ❤
My mom's favorite Roy Orbison song is Crying. Beautiful song. His vocals in that song make you cry.
Tom Petty and Jeff Lynn talking about working with Orbison during the Traveling Wilburys sessions were repeatedly shocked at the ease of his vocals being laid down. Several times they thought he was just mouthing the words as a warm up, then on the playback, it was a flawless full power song on the tape.
He was special for sure.
A voice like velvet. RIP Roy - love you.
Blue Velvet.
If you get a chance, watch the entire Black and White Night concert. His backing band included Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther and T Bone Burnett. The female background vocalists were k.d. lang, Jennifer Warnes, and Bonnie Raitt.
I was coming on here to mention the female background singers. Thank you!!!
I have the CD & the DVD. 😎💞
You also had TCB (Taking Care of Business), arguably the best backing anyone could hope for. James Burton on lead guitar, arguably the best guitarist of all time, Ronnie Tutt on drums and Glenn D. Harding on keyboard. TCB were the backing group to the stars. You knew you had made it to the big league when they backed you. Elvis, Roy Orbison, Emmylou Harris, Frank Sinatra, John Denver, Neil Diamond and many more all had TCB as their band for any live performances.
I still remember watching this on PBS for the first time back in the day and saying "Holy shit!" every time I recognized someone in the band. And seeing BI in the audience...
Orbison can hit octaves that other singers can only dream of. His last album before he died is called Mystery Girl. It really is a great album and all you need is to hear 2-3 notes and you know it's him. He's that great and that unique sounding. One of a kind!!
Just love Roy Orbison songs! I still sing them and get teary eyed! “Pretty Woman!” Is a song I enjoy too!
Mystery Girl is such a great album. I love every song. It sounds to me like it would have been his most recent greatest hits collection, but it was all new songs.
@Robert Reichle absolutely, being in the Traveling Wilburys was like a whole new world of inspiration for him. After all you have to compete with your bandmates .. George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty!! What a band, what a singer and what a great album Mystery Girl indeed is!!! Shame he had a heart attack!! Old school but they would thrive in any era!!! Good is still good, be it 1956 or 2026!!!
Mystery girl written by Bono and the Edge. Theres a bizarre story about how it all came about.
@Steve lives didn't know they wrote that but I know so many rockers have orbison on their fav list. Do tell the story please would love to hear about it
Roy has a 5 octave voice. He is one of the best vocalist of all time. Listen to Crying and Running Scared. It will bring tears to your eyes!
Not sure about 5 octaves. But admittedly the man had a range.
Just looked it up. Roy had a 3 octave range.
It's Over is the one!
He truly was the best singer in the world, his music is timeless and will live on forever.
I remember my radio alarm going off Dec 6, 1988. Instead of a song, it was the news that Roy Orbison was gone. I was a senior in high school. I turned off the alarm and cried myself back to sleep. My mom excused me from school, and we listened to his music all day.
Roy Orbison claimed in interviews that the lyrics for this song came to him in a dream; he wrote the music once he woke up. Typical of many Orbison songs, it's a heartbreaker: asleep at night is the only time he can be with the one he loves, as when he wakes up, she's gone.
One of the most beautiful male voices of all time. I'm a forever fan of his.
A Black and White Night is an absolutely Legendary concert...not a bad song from all of it...Soo glad you guys have discovered this...Thank you...
Orbison had the most incredible falsettos! His voice was completely unique. With his 3 octive range he was a master vocalist!! Check out his song "Crying"
I thought it was a 5 octave range
It's 5 Octaves, the average singer has 3
While there is absolutely debate on his octive range (some suggesting it is 5 or even as high as 7) the fact is, when reviewing his full catalog of recorded songs, the range is actually 2.8 octaves.
Song with the LOWEST pitch:
That Lovin' You Feelin' Again (F#2-A4)
Song with the HIGHEST pitch:
Indian Wedding (C3-E5)
@@JohnnyXoz Falsetto is not usually considered a normal range for a singer.
It seems almost insulting to react to this when he was past his prime as it is a whole different song by then.
Roy had one of the best voices ever. He put all of his emotions into his singing and playing.
“I Drove All Night” is another great one of his right before he died.
Nobody could sing better than Roy ... magical sounds which will last forever
'It's over' demonstrates his range even more (imo) - what a voice
Roy actually heard the melody for this song while dreaming...hence the name "In Dreams".
Roy's voice was like butter. No one like him since. So effortless and beautiful.
An amazing voice that the Traveling Wilburies enjoyed his beautiful voice! Tom Petty asked him if he knew he was the best voice there. Roy answered simply yes ❤😂 love this song !❤❤
Well it wasn't Dylan.
Roy is a true legend taken from us too soon. Gotta check out "Crying". Few can hit the notes Roy could. His voice ranged from baritone to tenor, and music scholars have suggested that he had a three- or four-octave range.[
I love how this song keeps getting more intense until the crescendo at the end.
Asking to choose your favourite Roy Orbison song is exactly the same as asking which of your kids you love the most, it's an impossible question to answer, Roy could sing the phone book or a dictionary and he would make it brilliant
You have no idea how difficult this song is to sing. I know because I made a tape once with me singing it. Roy had such a wide range! This video is from "A Black & White Night", an iconic concert that was made in the 80s and it features all of Roy Orbison's big hits. It also features an all-star lineup of great musical talent, including Elvis Costello, who you guys were introduced to just yesterday!
And Roy had this range WITHOUT going into falsetto. That's what him so amazing.
Elvis costello haha you must be pissed
Check out joe vari vari on youtube...his cover is utterly godlike!
I saw him in concert in Seattle. He was better live than any recording I had ever heard. He only sang for an hour but the review in the paper the next day said that one hour of Roy Orbison is worth three hours of anyone else.
roys voice is 1 of a kind.... love him...
Fondest memories of my Dad singing this to me as a very little girl at night. Hard to hear without getting emotional. I miss him so much.
There will NEVER be another Roy Orbison, he was so great!!
My favorite Roy Orbison song is "Crying". Amazing. Period. You need to do a back to back reaction of Roy singing his song, and KD Lang singing it at the Grammys after Roy had passed. You will have goosebumps that will never go away. KD's performance is one of the greatest I have ever seen in my life.
The Black and White Night Concert is epic. They assembled a backing band of All-Stars. And what is so cool, they were content to be the backing band. Very little elbowing to steal the spotlight off of Roy. If my memory serves me correctly, Springsteen was there. kd Lang, Bonnie Raitt, Jennifer Warnes, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne, T Bone Burnett.
“Elvis was bigger than life. His success was documented and laid out for him. He came to the first show I had in Memphis, and it was very nice. He sort of treated me like an equal, because we were both fresh in the business.
We got to be great friends and kindred souls”
- Roy Orbison
"Crying" is my favorite Roy Orbison song. His voice is incredible! ✌️
There's truly no other voice like Roy! Some of my favorites and some varying styles to try: "Only the Lonely," "Blue Angel," "Candyman," "Claudette," "Dream Baby," "Running Scared," and "Working for the man!" Such a great voice and I have a greatest hits album that I never skip a song on and the record I have too!
I endorse Running Scared and Working for the Man.
Roy Orbison.
The Incredible singer of stories.
In dreams. Full of Feelings Emotions and Love ❤️.
When Elvis was asked who he thought was the greates singer ever he named Roy Orbison.
I get goosebumps when I hear this song. My favorite from him.
It was used in the movie "Blue Velvet," where Dean Stockwell did a startling impersonation of singing the song. Strange movie though.
"Pretty Woman" is more famous. Also, "Cryin" is amazing. He did a version with kd lang, two voices that were made for each other. She did a solo version that I prefer. You need to react to her a lot more. "Constant Craving" is one of her absolute best. She has done some country songs in her own style. Check out "Trail of Broken Hearts" and "Pulling Back the Reins." She's also covered "Crazy" by Patsy Cline who was a big influence. Live or recorded, she's gold. As flawless a singer as I've ever heard.
yes!!! omg when she sang it at his tribute...makes me tear up everytime!!!!
I wish they would go waaay back to kd lang & The Reclines "Hanky Panky"
Miss Chatalaine was an awesome song.
I totally agree with you about KD Lamb's version. The duet is crazy good, but I feel like KD holds back in the duet. Her solo version, especially at the tribute show, was heartbreakingly beautiful and soul stirring.
Whenever I think of Miss Chatalaine I think of her appearance on "The Arsenio Hall Show" back in the day when she performed that song in a fluffy yellow dress and full makeup. He did not know how to react. It was hilarious. I think she was just messin' with him.
You absolutely need to listen to him sing Only the Lonely! At the end if that classic, he uses his voice unlike any form heard at the time!
He makes the singing look so effortlessly ,just floats from his lips, heavenly 💞
This was a special tribute to Roy called "A Black And White Night". He was joined by a star studded band of his friends. If you can, watch it. Excellent concert.
His original recording of - crying is a masterpiece
Y'all must hear "A Love so Beautiful."
As usual, Amber is once again spot on.
"You know what a love letter is?" Great line....
I think his slower songs, like this one, "Running Scared", and "It's Over", are some of his very best. His voice is magnificent. His remake of his own song, "Crying" with kd lang, will bring tears to your eyes. Their voices create a heavenly sound.
As for the question you asked, I prefer *any* other song by Roy over "Pretty Woman". It's been so overplayed, IMO. Great reaction!
Not only my favorite Orbison song but one of my favorite songs ever.
When Roy Orbison sang something it stayed sung.
Totally live, no effects, no studio stuff, just Roy singing with an orchestra and never missing a note. A legend. If you want to check out more Roy, try and watch more from this video which is from "Black and White Night", he plays all his hits with an all star orchestra behind him (Bruce, Elvis Costello, T Bone Burnett and many more)
The voice of an angel… His song Crying is a must. An emotional masterpiece that will blow you away. Also, You Got It is another must. 💕✌️✨
”If angels could sing they would have voice of Orbison” said one Finnish radio broadcaster years ago.
I was fortunate to have seen Roy live in concert back in 1986... he was beyond compare!
Ahhhh, my favourite Roy Orbison song! In Dreams parted with that voice is ethereal. It transports me to another world. The song is featured in a film by David Lynch called 'Blue Velvet'. The dream like quality of the song juxtaposed with the dark subject matter gives me chills. The studio version of In Dreams is worth a listen too.
This was an amazing concert just one year before his very untimely death. At that time this song was over 20 years old and Roy just crushes it. Of course that’s also the best backing band ever created, just ridiculous. I have this stored on my DVR. ✌️
The reason Roy wore sunglasses was because he had major stage fright. Dude was a legend, The Beatles opened up for him, and Elvis said his biggest fear was Roy Orbison playing on the radio before him, since he knew that Roy was the most talented one.
This was filed at Eli's Hard Rock Cafe, in L.A....it was the last time we'd see him alive..Damn the fates for taking such a beautiful man from us..After all he'd been through, he deserved to love so much longer!! (Note all the stars on-stage with him..He was so loved they jumped at the chance to play with him!)
My fave Roy Orbison song. Wish you guys did the studio version though.
@@Spo-Dee-O-Dee That's true,. My point is that in the vast majority of cases, the version of a song we like and first heard is the studio version. Just by listening to a song over and over, sometimes for decades, the timing, accompaniment, voice inflections, is something we notice right away.
CRYING IS SUCH A GREAT ROY ORBISON SONG 🎵
CRYING IS A BEAUTIFUL ROY ORBISON SONG 🎵
Roy Orbison, A Black and White Night is a great concert to own. A stage full of Mega- Stars that will never be matched. It is seriously fantastic.
When I was 12, a year before the Beatles came to America, I had a vinyl album of Roy's that I totally WORE OUT! Please react to much more! Try Leah next! Listen to the story he beautifully tells with Indian Love Song and sooo much more❤ Love y'all! 💋 😊
"It's Over" is a real emotional tear jerker.. not requested that often for some strange reason. He has so many many memorable songs. To stand there and hardly move or open his mouth to produce that sound particularly when he was young was magical. Never will be another like Roy Kelton Orbison. You must be pretty good to upsatge the Beatles for them to ask him to "go home Yankee"!!. Of course it was all in good faith, but for the crowd in England to keep asking Roy Orbison for encores and forget about the Beatles who had been on before is pretty special. He was by all accounts a really lovely humble guy. Sure miss the "Big O"
His original recordings are the most powerful and magical.
This entire concert video is wonderful. Every song was a smash hit.
@Jay and @Amber one of the 25 Greatest voices of all time :) Lovely song
Definitely “I drove all night” ❣️❣️Blew me away the first time I heard it. “In Dreams “is my favorite song of the Legendary Roy Orbinson. One of the greatest, and most iconic voices of all time.♥️ The Bee Gees my favorite band of all time . Barry spoke a lot of the influence Roy Orbinson had on them. There will never be another three part harmony like them; and their songwriting is pure brilliance ❣️❣️🎤🎸🎶🎵
i got to see him in a dinner club, 100 people only, he just stood there and sang, the experience of my life
CRYING IS A GREAT ROY ORBISON SONG 🎵
Yes!!! This is my favorite Roy Orbison song and has been since my childhood. The "wiggle" in his voice is called vibrato, and his is perfect. He has so many great songs. Listen to Cryin and his version of Blue Bayou.
Springsteen says Roy was the greatest singer he ever heard. Some praise from the Boss.
The entire concert is a must. So many of his famous friends joining him.
For his total range listen to BLUE ANGEL. The only thing you can say about Roy Orbison is that he was the greatest singer who ever lived, sadly missed but never forgotten RIP ROY.😎😎😎😎
Roy’s songs speak to the soul. They’re either reaching down to the depths of our pain in a love that’s been lost, or he’s taking us to the heights of ecstasy in a love that’s been won or redeemed. Either way, no matter what human experience you’re going through, Roy makes every word count.
I heard this song for the first time only yesterday and I now can't hear it enough, his voice is just mesmerising. From London, UK
CRYING IS THE BEST EVER ROY ORBISON SONG 🎵
one of the real performers, just stand there play and sing…shows the power of the song and his singing..didnt need anything else
His vibrato is so distinctive, you know it is Roy in just a few notes.
"Blue Velvet" always comes to mind when I hear this song. It's a phenomenal song on it's own merits, but David Lynch's use of it in his film was just perfect.
Dean Stockwell miming this with a cigarette holder and a work light for a mic is just…suave.
he was THE artist no one wanted to FOLLOW on stage, even Elvis
What an amazing evening. Can't even imagine being there. On piano was Glen D. Hardin, who had played piano for Buddy Holly as well as Elvis Presley. Lead guitarist James Burton, drummer Ronnie Tutt and bassist Jerry Scheff were also from Presley's group. Male background vocals and some guitars were provided by Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther and Steven Soles. Female background vocalists were k.d. lang, Jennifer Warnes and Bonnie Raitt. Not all the stars were on stage. Glimpses of celebrities in the audience can be seen, including Kris Kristofferson, Patrick Swayze, Billy Idol and Sandra Bernhard.
That concert was on PBS. A night in Black and White with Roy Orbison. He was backed by some of the most talented people in the music industry. If you get a chance you should watch the entire film.
Personally, this is my all time favorite Roy Orbison song. Not only does he show his incredible range, but he also revolutionizing the structure of the song. There's no regular chorus, or refrain. His voice is just constantly rising. To be fair, as wonderful as his voice is in this video, its even more amazing as a younger man. Magical.
SURE WISH YOU WOULD HAVE JUDGED HIS ORIGINAL CUT OF THIS FROM THE 60'S - I LOVE HIM BUT THE YOUNGER ROY JUST KILLED IT..... HE ONLY HELPED OUT THE TRAVELING W'S HE WS A KING AND ELVIS ADORED HIM . PLEASE DO MORE OF HIS HITS BUT FROM THE ORIGINAL CUTS.....
What a voice! I could never sing along with him. He could go from tenor to a soprano at the flip of a switch. When I would try to sing his songs my throat would stop and say don’t even think about it
Oh yeah, got some Roy again! He has so many fantastic songs, this is a great concert…have it on cd. Both songs you mentioned are tops, but my favorite is “You Got It”, live performance. The percussion is just terrific! Roy’s voice is just iconic, nobody is even in the same category.
Roy Orbison was never flashy, but he had a voice that could blend with any instrument. An absolute genuine singer.
He had a star studded backing band and singers in this performance, Jackson Browne, T Bone Burnett, Elvis Costello, k.d. lang, Bonnie Raitt, J.D. Souther, Bruce Springsteen, Tom Waits and Jennifer Warnes. A fantastic song by an incredible singer.
My dad got killed by a drunk driver when I was only five months old. I knew when my mom was feeling down or reminiscing when I would hear her play this song. We (me and my older brother) would go in after it was was over and sit with her until she felt better. It was our duties as good sons.
Yes, this is from the Black and White Night concert, 1987. Roy was 51 at the time. He's still hitting the notes, pretty much the same as when he released most of his hits in 1960 or so.
One of the greatest singers of all times, Elvis said this also!👍👏👏👏💜💖🌸
Saw Roy in concert in Clearwater, Florida. He was amazing live. His preconcert music was all BEATLES. He toured with the Beatles before they became the headliners.
since my wife died of cancer in 2009 , in dreams is the only place i can hold her and tell her i love you
"In Dreams" is not only my favorite RO song but it's on my Top Twenty All-Time Songs List, I think. Loved the reaction!
So excited to see y'all finally doing this one! Please add "California Blue" to your list - written by Jeff Lynne for Roy's final album before his death.
Windsurfer and The Comedians from the same album are great as well.
🥰🥰🥰 "Crying" and "Only The Lonely" are great too.
This is from the special A Black and White Night, featuring the greatest backup band in rock history.
One of Roy's more iconic concerts, the backing musicians were from The TCB band, the guys that backed Elvis Presley, guitars were played by Elvis Costello, Bruce Springsteen, and James Burton, the backup singers were Jennifer Warnes, Bonnie Rait, JD Souther, Jackson Browne, and KD Lange. It's on video called Black and White Night
What a voice he had - carries so much power whilst still being gentle. Try She's a Mystery to me, it was written for him by Bono from U2 and was put on his last album. Gorgeous.
No one is going to make me believe that Roy Orbison it's not greatest artist of all time, what a man..
Roy Orbison’s voice is top 5 all time ! This song just breaks my heart… I lost my only child in 2014 my daughter Marilyn she was 21 … So I relate because in dreams I get to see her but then I wake up ….
