Vincent Mouzon This reminds me of a young lady I worked with a couple of years back. She was a college student and 19 years old. Every so often I would ask her a question about who somebody in history was. Who was FDR? Who was RFK? Who was Neil Armstrong? One morning I turned to her and asked, who is Keith Richards? Her eyes got very wide and she got a big smile and she jumped up and said, "I know this one! He was the second man on the moon!" She was positive that she nailed that one. She was serious and that is a true story.
I think Keith would appreciate that story.

About the only way someone of your generation can appreciate how groundbreaking the Beatles were is to listen to the top five songs on the American charts in December of 1963, a month before "I Want to Hold Your Hand" hit the airwaves. This was the tired musical arena that the Beatles not only entered, but completely shattered. By March of 1964 -- only three months later -- all top five spots were theirs -- "Can't Buy Me Love", "Twist and Shout", "She Loves You", "I Want to Hold Your Hand", and "Please Please Me." Most musicians would die to pen just one hit song, yet the Beatles seemed to crank them out effortlessly, still sounding fresh over 50 years later. One really can't understate their impact on both music and culture.

Great idea! And wow, when you look at those 5 and compare them to the 5 Beatles songs topping the charts 3 months later.... that does indeed give a vivid impression of the explosion The Beatles caused. Thanks for doing this. I'm going to have fun checking all those Dec. '63 videos :-) p.s. I think you mean one can't *overstate* their impact!

No, they didn't split in 1965. What happened is that the Beatles' primary writers were Lennon and McCartney, and early on, they usually wrote together. By 1965, they were more apt to write separately (but not always), but the songs were still credited to Lennon and McCartney. They didn't break up until around 1969, and didn't really announce it to the world until 1970.

"Yesterday" was not written about Jane Asher because Paul was with her until sometime around 1967, possibly a little later and other commenters explain that Paul said the song was about his mother. Their producer George Martin was a classically trained musician and his influence can be found on almost every Beatle recording. In addition to "Yesterday," other songs that used a string quartet were "Eleanor Rigby" from the album Revolver and "She's Leaving Home" from Sgt. Pepper. There are a number of recordings that do not have the traditional guitar, bass, and drums such as "Fool On The Hill," "When I'm 64," Honey Pie," and "For No One." The Beatles were not afraid to break the mold of what rock music should be and under the guidance of George Martin it always came through successfully. Right after Sgt. Pepper was released their manager Brain Epstein passed away. He was the glue that kept them together as a unit and after he died the Beatles became more individualistic with the best example of that being "The White Album." As others have noted, Yoko was not the sole reason for their breaking up. By 1969 they were tired of being boxed in as Beatles and with Yoko being in the studio during recording sessions, bad business arrangements with Allen Klein, and the failure of the original Apple idea, they were tired and wanted to break out on their own. A great example of this is George Harrison's first album after the Beatles split. "All Things Must Pass" was a triple album although the third disc was just loose jam sessions and only the first two records have original music. Some of the songs on that album went back as far as 1966 so their desire to be individuals has its roots long before they actually broke up. Keep up the good work because people like you will help keep the Beatles alive for generations to come.

1965 was when the Beatles really started to get good and they kept getting better and better. When said they started do songs on their own, it means the started writing songs on their own. They still performed the majority of the songs together. Even when they started to get on each others nerves in 1968/1969, they were still getting better musically.

So back then music was way different then now, it was at the start of the music revolution with Elvis, Beatles and Rolling Stones. And remember that this is a time where parents and fans were in conflict with eachother ( those who survived the war and those who were born after war )
Try to listen too the music change from the 50's to the 60's where Elvis kicked in, you literally can hear the lame music taste changes in wild rock and roll modern music that we love now on these days. All the modern music that we love now, came from that era.

One of the most fascinating things about this song is that Paul McCartney heard this song in a dream that he had. When he woke he thought that it must have been something he heard somewhere that popped up in his dream. When no trace of the song could be found it became apparent that Paul McCartney's mind created the song while he slept. The rest is history.

Lennon-McCartney agreed very early in their career as long as they remained in The Beatles that any and all songs they wrote would be credited jointly to both of them. This only started falling apart in 1969-70 as the group started to break up that songs were credited to one or the other. Early in the Beatles career many songs were truly co-written 50-50 or close to it but as time went on more and more were mostly done by one or the other, i.e. "Yesterday."
In many interviews Lennon used to joke about getting pissed off if fans would compliment him on writing "Yesterday." And sometimes he wasn't joking.

According to biographers of McCartney and the Beatles, McCartney composed the entire melody in a dream one night in his room at the Wimpole Street home of his then girlfriend Jane Asher and her family.[5] Upon waking, he hurried to a piano and played the tune to avoid forgetting it.[6]
McCartney's initial concern was that he had subconsciously plagiarised someone else's work (known as cryptomnesia). As he put it, "For about a month I went round to people in the music business and asked them whether they had ever heard it before. Eventually it became like handing something in to the police. I thought if no one claimed it after a few weeks then I could have it."[6]
Upon being convinced that he had not robbed anyone of their melody, McCartney began writing lyrics to suit it. As Lennon and McCartney were known to do at the time, a substitute working lyric, titled "Scrambled Eggs" (the working opening verse was "Scrambled eggs/Oh my baby how I love your legs/Not as much as I love scrambled eggs"), was used for the song until something more suitable was written. In his biography, Paul McCartney: Many Years from Now, McCartney recalled: "So first of all I checked this melody out, and people said to me, 'No, it's lovely, and I'm sure it's all yours.' It took me a little while to allow myself to claim it, but then like a prospector I finally staked my claim; stuck a little sign on it and said, 'Okay, it's mine!' It had no words. I used to call it 'Scrambled Eggs'."[7] The original song, Scrambled Eggs, was written to hold the music and phrasing in place. It was performed by Paul McCartney and Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, and has been recorded and released by the Brittles, a Beatles-pastiche band.
During the shooting of Help!, a piano was placed on one of the stages where filming was being conducted and McCartney took advantage of this opportunity to tinker with the song. Richard Lester, the director, was eventually greatly annoyed by this and lost his temper, telling McCartney to finish writing the song or he would have the piano removed.[8] The patience of the other Beatles was also tested by McCartney's work in progress, George Harrison summed this up when he said: "Blimey, he's always talking about that song. You'd think he was Beethoven or somebody!"[9]
McCartney originally claimed he had written "Yesterday" during the Beatles' tour of France in 1964; however, the song was not released until the summer of 1965. During the intervening time, the Beatles released two albums, A Hard Day's Night and Beatles for Sale, each of which could have included "Yesterday". Although McCartney has never elaborated on his claims, a delay may have been due to a disagreement between McCartney and George Martin regarding the song's arrangement, or the opinion of the other Beatles who felt it did not suit their image.[6]
Lennon later indicated that the song had been around for a while before:

Yoko is a good scapegoat but remember, these guys lived and worked together from the late 50's until 1970. They were tired and were becoming solo artists that were still in a band. Watch the movie Let It Be to gain some insight into how they had grown apart. John was with Yoko and Paul was with Linda and they both wanted to be with their families.

"I said something wrong": Paul's dad was a cotton salesman but cotton was a dying market; his mother was a nurse and, unusual for the time, made more money that her husband. When Paul's mother died, instead of expressing remorse he blurted out, "What'll we do without her money?" A second later he was horrified at himself, but he had said it and had to live with it. The line in "Yesterday" came from his lingering guilt

It was the first time they had played live in years, they did it unannounced on the roof of their building until the cops stopped them, it was also the last time they played live. Crazy stuff, also a bit more rock than the ones you've been listening to

They didn't split up until 1969-70, but by 1965 they were all getting their own musical ideas, so even though a song was still listed as by Lennon and McCartney, it was almost always either one of them or the other that wrote it. You can basically call 1965 the end of the "Early Beatles" and the start of their more experimental music.
As for Yoko Ono, she was simply one part of the situation that led to their split up. The Beatles had been together for about 10 years and had very little life outside music and the group - it was becoming like a prison for them. They were all wanting to do different things, especially spending more time with their girlfriends and families. John and Yoko married in 1969, Paul and Linda also married in 1969. It's only natural that that would put pressure on being in a band as full-on as the Beatles.

Another tid-bit here, back in the 60s' the emphasis was placed on "hit singles", not album sales for that was where the money was for the record company and producers. The Beatles were only active (recording) for eight years but sold 1.6 BILLION singles and 77 MILLION albums. That is impressive!

This is a deceptive song because it isn't a love song. Paul is singing about his mothers death. She died of breast cancer when he was just 14. He wasn't told she was ill, wasn't told how she died, wasn't allowed to attend the funeral or know where she was buried. He was set to school on the same morning he was told of her death and was told he shouldn't cry and to "soldier on"
"I said something wrong now I long for yesterday" refers to him teasing his mum and upsetting her shortly before her dearh (not realising she was ill)

Wait now, hold on, the reason The Beatles broke up, coming from any long time Beatles fan, if you know thier whole catalog and story: They achieved so much in such a short time, a blink of an eye in todays recording industry standard, that they exhausted their mutual partnerships. Like childhood friends, or a family, that is still a family, still friends; sometime close, sometimes distant, sometimes in love and sometimes fighting like cats and dogs. That and the ridiculous pressures fame had put on them. Lennon imfamously once said, and I'm paraphrasing: "We're bigger than Jesus Christ with the youth right now." And he was correct, but in the mid 1960's with everything else going on, that was heresy! So they ate a ton of shit over that one misunderstood observation and statement, then the pressue began to build on them. But Yoko Ono, by herself, did not break up The Beatles.

If you watch the "abbey Rd" recordings DVD, I think it's the "let it be" doco, you can see the tension between them. They were all branching out in their own way.
The yoko part comes into it with john's (I hate to say it) Narcissistic Personality. Yoko was the "golden child" and her word was golden. So when she suggested John was king and the others were "not at his level" he bought into it and enforced it. So when Paul challenged the partnership (to enable solo careers) John saw it as a threat and created "how do you sleep"
OK so I'm on a bit of a tangent but it describes the tension behind the internal politics of the Beatles that might shed a light as to why it wasn't released as a single but became so popular.
The Beatles also proclaimed they were a rock group and had no place for a ballad at the time of recording.
Yoko wasn't the cause but, alongside pauls dissolution of the partnership, was the catalist for the breakup.
The. Cracks were there just needed the feul to explode, and that they did, in beatles memorabilia and history

Well, *originally* it was written as an acoustic guitar strum, but as soon as Paul started figuring out where to put bass and drums, George Martin said, "hey this would sound better with a string quartet." Martin had a lot of experience in soundtrack and comedy records so he knew how to integrate strings into the arrangement. Martin was like the perfect "technician" to tell Lennon/McCartney how to put their ideas down onto tape.

I'm sure others have already said this but they did not split in 1965 but 1970 and Yoko Ono was instrumental in that.
All they were saying is that from around 1965 they each wrote solo but still collaborated together to make a complete Beatles Unit and it was easier just to Joint Credit them on all their songs unless written by George or Ringo who got theiir own credits like the gorgeous" Something" by George but do NOT pause that or it loses its magic, my friend...

the beatles basically framed pop in the way of making music simple and powerful, structure and effectivness. Not exclusive to this song though and they did a lot of long ones too.
showed that a testiment of a good modern song, is being able to deliver it in around 3 minutes. This rule held for a looooong time in pop music and still holds.

About the Beatles... so much of what they did, musically, was new at the time. It's old news to you now, but at the time, so many of the engineering and sound manipulations were new... never heard before. They were revolutionary in a lot of ways and, besides being cute as heck, their albums broke a lot of new ground.
You said the sound was basic and simple. However, it was a full orchestra on a pop song, not a 4-piece band, but an orchestra.... pretty phenomenal for the rock era of the mid-60's... and it was beautiful.
Also, Yoko got the blame for the break up but she was just a piece of it. John fell for her hard but the band was already starting to fall apart and (although I don't really much like Yoko's attitude then and now) she just provided another reason, not the only reason. They all were individuals and wanted to pursue their own roads... sadly it was rather inevitable. Unlike the Rolling Stones, they wanted to go their own ways, I guess.

"Yesterday" was not really a song about something specifically that happened to Paul. It was just a melody that came into his head during a dream, and then he spent the next several months searching for lyrics to match the song's obvious beauty. I wasn't about Jane Asher. She would be with Paul another 3 or 4 years. While Paul wrote this song solo, he was still writing quite a bit with John, but they were more and more writing separately, and using each other to finish songs. "I Want to Hold Your Hand" was NOT the Beatles' last song -- in fact, it was one of their first hits. The Beatles were in the midst of "Beatlemania" in 1965, and they didn't break up until late '69/early '70. And while Yoko certainly was an influence, there were many factors that contributed to the split. FYI. (Nice to see a young guy discovering this great band, BTW. Keep it up!)

I'm sorry if I'm repeating one of the other commenters, but the reason that Paul recorded this song by himself is because it came to him in a dream. For that reason, none of the other Beatles needed to participate in the writing of the song. Then, the only Beatle instrument that's played on this song is an acoustic guitar, meaning there was no need for the other Beatles to play on it. He's back up by violins, etc.

This song is from their early period. They still had to go through Rubber Soul, Revolver and Sargeant Pepper, etc. In other words, the best was still to come. Beatles went through lots of changes musically. They were a very creative band. By the way, Paul and John always let the other two have a cut on each album. They were very democratic that way. Keep studying the Beatles. You'll be surprised how your musical mind will expand.

I grew up listening to the Beatles. I believe that one of the reasons the Beatles made it so far so fast was because they had songs that every generation enjoyed. They had the fast, loud sometimes weird songs that you can dance to for the younger generation. Although the younger generation also liked the slower songs. But the older generations like the slower songs too even though many of them were outraged at the Beatles at first saying they were going to demoralize the younger generation and they were of the devil. Rock music in general was discouraged. Even Elvis Presley when on TV they would not film him from the waste down at first since he had that dance move that was obscene. Now they allow just about anything. Miley Cyrus and others that are disgusting to many of us is the new way the next generation pushes the limits the way the Beatles pushed the limits back then. One thing I love about the earlier songs in particular was the fact that they sang what you feel when you fall in love or when your heartbroken. Most of the songs in recent times are so full of just filth but the Beatles were fun and full of hope and love and joy and sometimes sadness like you have in your life. At first, they even wore suits and ties to preform because this was their job and they wanted to be presentable. Later in the crazy drug years they wore whatever was the style of the day, all flower power and psychedelic tie dye stuff and wrote songs that you can tell what they were trippin on. Lucy in the sky with diamonds, octopus garden, Maxwell's silver hammer. Their music constantly progressed and kept changing the model of what all rock music was and became. Another group that was right there with them but didn't get the recognition that the Beatles got were the Bee Gee's. They started as young boys in the late 50's and continued until 2003 when Maurice died. They were also a fantastic group and were for 45 years. The Bee Gees have sold more than 220 million records.
