I almost ruined this MCM clock while trying to save it

- Things don't always go as planned in a makeover, whether it's furniture or something else. We got this clock for $20 on FB Marketplace with the intention of cleaning it up for our dining room. I had to adjust my plans pretty much the whole way along, and then made a BIG mistake which almost ruined the whole thing. In the end, I'm happy with the results, but holy smokes, I never expected a seemingly easy rescue such as this to give me such a hassle!

See this is why we love you. Being a real person goes a long way. The work that you do speaks for its self.! 👍🏼❤️ beautifully done.
In a world of fakers, your honesty and integrity serve you well and we are here for it and you. I’m in my 60’s and have endured many oh sh1t moments. That’s when you learn, take a breath, walk away come back and fix it up.
Ps I will admit I would have said much worse than oh sh1t 🤣🤣🤣
I appreciate that so much!! Thank you!! ❤️
I am glad that you show all aspects of a flip, the good, the bad and the oops. These help people learn. Good job.
Thank you very much! 😊
Ok... I work nights, and am VERY late to comments, but:
A) This is for YOU! Stop qualifying ANYTHING!
It was destined for the dumpster
B) You did a GREAT job at saving a piece... that was worth saving... and would have died in a landfill
C) Anyone who would criticize you... um... did YOU save it from the dumpster? No? ... Then sit down.
I find that "purists" tend to be those who have dropped the ball on projects that don't meet their "criteria".
This is YOUR piece.
Kudos.
And... thank you for sharing.
And do not ever be ashamed of frustration... that IS how we learn. And... it turned out lovely... and will be a treasured piece in your home.
Thanks, Ang!
You always brighten my day.
😉👍
Thank you very much for watching! It’s just very different when I’m sharing something with the world (vs just my own home). I’ve always been a perfectionist so sometimes it’s hard to just let go.
Angie, you were very brave to share this video. I especially liked the steps that you identified -- with great honesty. It was a pleasure to see how you saved your efforts and ended up with a beautiful clock. Good work, Girl!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
I love your honesty, the clock turned out beautifully and it's Nacho approved!❤
I so enjoy watching an artist at work. It's how you view everything you do. 😊 Love the clock it looks great in your dining room.
We learn best by mistakes we make. It's lovely. Don't know how you find such beauties but, so glad you do.
Thank you so much! 😊
Growing up in the 60's my parents had a clock very similar to this one, watching this brings back memories for me. As a retired woodworker I can tell you that sh*t happens to the best of us and there should be no embarrassment on your part. Your perseverance and determination has shown through and once again you've achieved a high quality restoration. Shine on!
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that! 😊
Reminds me of the famous Bob Ross quote, "There are no mistakes, only happy accidents." While , in the end, it may not look the same as your vision, it is well done and a testament to skill coupled with tenacity. And that is worth quite a bit!
Thank you so much for this. I really appreciate it!! 😊
I love this clock, Angie! It touched my heart. My grandmother had this exact clock in her Livingroom; and your video took me back many decades to my childhood. I am now 60 years old, and I was thrilled watching you restore the clock. When things go wrong in life, it is nothing more than an invitation to change course! You changed course and ended up with a beautiful results. I cannot wait to see what you tackle next. Love your channel and love watching your furniture transformations.
This is the very reason why I wanted to see this one. My grandmother also had a clock very much like this one! Angie did a fantastic job of cleaning this up and saving it. It brings back a lot of memories for me.
Thank you so much Shelley! I'm so glad I could bring back some fond memories for you!! ❤️
The simple things bring us such great pleasure. :) @@lorihowell5188
Oh my gosh! Angie replied to me! LOL -- I feel so honored...more than anything, I am honored to watch what you do on a regular basis. You are such an inspiration.
I think the end result is simply gorgeous. Don’t sell yourself short. Give what you had to work with, and what you found along the way, it looks beautiful! And definitely goes well with the rest of your decor. Kudos to you!
Thanks so much for watching! 😊
I love it! You show the human side of things. Nobody is perfect. Mistakes are made by all of us. I love it that you show the ups and the downs! Great job on the clock.
Thanks so much for watching! 😊
Thank you for sharing this video. There is no shame or embarrassment in making mistakes, in fact they are what help us improve and be better. I used to think that everything had to be perfect, but perfection is an illusion and in reality it does not exist. What I love about your videos and work is that you do your very best with each piece that you take on. I watch other flippers who are not nearly as thorough as you, and I appreciate how patient and meticulous you are with your creations. In the end your clock turned out fabulous and you saved it from the rust and yuck that would have eventually made it useless. Thank you for always being honest with us too!
You're so welcome! I think it's important to show all aspects of it and how things can go sideways sometimes. 😊
Knew you and Andrea would be repairing this clock for your selves…. Iconic MCM including the wooden element 👍👏👏…But what a challenge… and not one you thought you would be a problem … famous last words, Angie !!!…Fascinating experience for you… and ‘US’ lot watching 🥺😱…”oh S**t” as you ‘mentioned’ 😵💫😵💫🤫.!…and that was correct!!… do not be embarrassed because you saved this item from certain tip destination… to bring in your home as testament to your determination and compromise 👏👏. It looked quite marvellous… until some little souls with paws and whiskers.. had a little fun with the moving parts !!The ‘wonderful Walnut parts got the Angie treatment..and had you not dealt with the rust… it could not be hung there in your dining room.. in pride of place… You did ‘Good’😀👍👍..as always…Cheers…’time’ well spent!!!.. sorry for that pun…Sue UK 👌👌
Thanks so much for watching Sue! 😊
Those criminal mittens! It looks perfectly at home, and i hope that in spite of the frustration, you'll be proud of it every time you look at it for years to come.
Thank you so much for watching! 😊
It turned out beautiful in spite of the problems. Thanks for sharing. And thank Nacho for his artistic “bent” on the piece 🤣
You're so welcome!! 😺
I really appreciate you showing the challenges we all can run into, and yet, we can conquer them. Thanks for sharing. Beautiful final outcome!
You're most welcome! 😊
Thanks for sharing this video. You know, we all jump into something at some point that doesn't go as we had hoped or planned. Labeling the stages of awareness and forging forward with the remedy is a good lesson for all. And, as you always do, the end product is beautiful...even with your cat's addition (or subtraction)❤️😂💜🙌
Thank you so much for watching!! I'm so glad you enjoyed it! 😊
Yes, I finally had to take the hands off my clock as my two little devils would NOT leave them alone and I was afraid they would pull the clock off the wall. It is now sort of just a strange wall decoration. I really liked the video - and I love how it turned out - looks great in the dining room. I think it is great that you kept going to show that even a piece that looks like it's going to go south, can still be saved. You did a great job! Thanks for sharing.
You're so welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed it. 😊
When so many things go wrong, many people would have given up, but not you Angie! Thank you for sharing this, mishaps and all. The result is great.
You're most welcome!! 🙂
Great save imo!
Crooked second hand reminds me of our cat growing up. It would sneak into the living + dining room and play with the noisy dial on the thermostat, often hiking up the temperature in the winter.
Haha! Aren't cats great?
@@TranscendFurnitureGallery and the kids were getting the blame for it.
While I work in a different medium (fabric), the "challenges" of this project SO reminds me of some of my mis-steps and misadventures. Congrats on a great result despite the bumps and bangs along the way!
Thank you so much for watching! 😊
Angie my dear... first of all thank you for the life lesson.... nothing to be embarrassed about of course. What you have ended up with is truly beautiful and a terrific addition to your home. Thank you ❤
You're so welcome! Thank you!
IT LOOKS SO GOOOOOOOOOD!!! Your dining room is an MCM dream
Thank you very much! 😊
We’ve all made mistakes! It’s comforting to know that you make them, too, and you’re willing to share the journey! You really are a friend to your fans! 😊
Awe, I'm so glad you enjoyed it! 😀
I loved watching this process, even though it didn’t go as planned. Your dining room is lovely, and it really ties everything together.
Thank you so much! 😊
you knocked it out of the park you are very versatile🇨🇦😊
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that! 😊
Stunning dining room & the clock is the icing on the cake. Good to know it has the stamp of approval from your CFO Mr Nacho (Chief Feline Obstacle). 💖
I love the " Chief Feline Obstacle" 😂
Haha thank you for that Lois! 🤣
It turned out just gorgeous! I think you made good choices. Sometimes age does destroy something worth keeping and the only way to give it more life is to give it new life. Repainting should keep the rust at bay for many more years. I love MCM and this clock gave me happies.
Awe, I'm so glad you enjoyed it! Thank you so much! 😊
Confidence, oh $hi+, embarrassment, acceptance, rebirth. Angie, you just told the story of my life!
That's fantastic. I'd love it on my wall. Well done you 👌👏👏👏👏❤
Thanks so much! 😀
I'm glad you keep the mistakes. It makes doing stuff seem more doable because -- yeah we might make mistakes -- but that's not the end of the world.
Exactly. Thats why I felt it as important to show this aspect of things. Thanks so much for watching! 😊
hey girl. weird but i stopped filming a piece this week and now i totally regret it. I might try to salvage some footage. i think the clock looks amazing. You did a great job!
Please do! But I know exactly how it feels, haha.
The Business man is upholding his reputation ! Hopefully he does not knock it off the wall. Well done on the clock. You did a great job bringing that back to life.
I hope he doesn't either!! 😉
Stage 3 for me would have been frustration, temper tantrum and a whole lot if cussing and probably throwing some stuff. I love old clocks.
Absolutely great video & explanation of everything!
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! 😀
Great job. Who’d a thought? Clock looks terrific again the dark wall. Go you !
Thanks so much! 😀
They used to spray lacquer over brass and brass plating to keep it from tarnishing but once it gets tarnished to polish it, you have to remove the lacquer first
WOW. I have such clock envy over this piece! And showing something that you thought you messed up entirely and then coming back from it is super inspirational. I've been through all the stages of bad fixes, and totally understand.
Thank you so much for watching! 😊
thanks for sharing this. i think it turned out beautiful as always. the new handles are super nice. all‘s well that ends well. 😊
Also i like that you showed the make of the clock and a bit of the history of these pieces. Made in Canada!
I love it.
Take away: keep moving forward no matter the obstacle.
Thank you so much for watching! 😀
Hey Angie, You're way too hard on yourself. You fixed everything and it looks beautiful. Sometimes what we call mistakes are just learning opportunities we'd rather not have. Great job and good for you for putting it out there. Everyone has many opportunities to learn. The reframing always helps as you have helped all of us. You showed us that a little bit of stick-to-it ness can lead to something beautiful. A little patience goes a long way! Cheers! Another Angie
I know. It’s just very different when I’m sharing something with the world (vs just my own home). I’ve always been a perfectionist so sometimes it’s hard to just let go.
@@TranscendFurnitureGallery Didn't mean to make you question what comes naturally to you, Angie. It leads to fantastic work. You're definitely wonderful.
Ive been there 🤣 Looking great now!
Thank you kindly! 😊
Again, Angie, the work you do is awesome again, Angie, the work you do is awesome! Please never think for one moment that you cannot share the ups and downs of the work you do it is important that you show us the entire process the good bad and the ugly. We’re here for it and we don’t judge keep going girl.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate this comment. ❤️
The proverbial rabbit out of the hat, sign of a true creative
Gorgeous looking clock and thanks for walking us through the 5 steps... Its could help folk along the way... The murderous assault by the fur kids was a surprise :) Thanks for sharing ...you rock
You're most welcome! 😀
They aren't mistakes, they're learning opportunities! I pulled my MCM starburst clock out of a dumpster, reeking from a fire ten years before. Also had to replace the soot-clogged mechanism. I got it so clean it quit being smelly, but I think I want to give the wood points another look after this. I've learned so much watching this channel.
I'm so glad I can help! Thank you so much for watching! 😊
Oh wow!! I love it! It looks just the right amount of old, as if it was lovingly cared for- but we now know it was lovingly restored!!(In spite of the frustration, I think you learned from it!) 😍❤️🐈🐈😁
Thanks so much! 😊
Great job all around. First for defining the five steps of a flip gone wrong. And next for a great save. That clock just oozes mid-century modern. All the steps you took came out terrific. And the swap to a quarts movement was absolutely needed.
Thank you so much! 😊
Looks great! I do electrical and electronic repair and refurbishment, and the upper-lip-sweat moment when you know that everything has gone horribly wrong and you're going to have to push through the rage and embarrassment to try and make it all OK is totally familiar. The struggle is real. Good work Angie.
Thank you so much!! 😊
Angie you are awesome. I so enjoy your videos. You are very thoughtful and it reflects in your wonderful flips. I love the clock.
Thank you very much for watching! 😊
I really appreciate your videos. I've been learning a lot from them,. & I love that you included this one. Thank you!
You're so welcome! 😀
Wow!! That turned out so nice. Sorry you had such a time with it but glad you didn’t give up. Beautiful. The only thing missing was a kitty cameo. But then I got one! Absolutely the best. Thank you.
You're very welcome! 😊
Right ,First of all can i express my disappointment. ye didnae film the Hissy Fit.😂 Now you started with a refugee from a skip. You went through a pain barrier/learning curve and you came out the other side. lessons learned. The piece itself turned out excellent. Never any doubt that it would . But the best bit is we got to see loads clips of yourself. Happy Days. Later BTW noted the clips of the Cats.
Thanks William!! And thank you for the belly laugh over not filming the hissy fit. 😉
That's what I envy, perseverance, that would probably have ended up being angrily thrown in the bin if it was me! Great outcome as always a true professional. Bloody cats eh?😂
Thank you very much! 😀
It's a beautiful clock, and you did such an amazing job restoring it - don't judge yourself for a second - if you hadn't saved it someone would likely have thrown it in the trash. Also, stinker kitties are very very lucky they have so many wonderful qualities that detract from destruction! 🤣
Thanks so much for watching! 😊
Wow Angie, absolutely gorgeous! Even though it was frustrating you made it beautiful again! Love the way it turned out. Looks stunning in the dining room 😊! ❤
Thank you very much! 😊
Looks great Angie, & thanx for sharing all the ups and downs 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 gives the rest of us encouragement not to give up 🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼
You're very welcome! ☺️
Love that you own up to the mistakes AND find a way to fix them. Thats how we learn. The clock turned out beautiful. No one would know unless they were experts in clocks. Great job and thank you for sharing your learning experiences.
You're very welcome! Thank you so much for watching! 😊
I absolutely love how it turned out!
Thank you very much! 😊
Angie, I always learn from you. This info on the paint coming off is priceless. Thanks for the video and sharing with us all about your beautiful clock. Susie
You're so welcome Susie!
Angie: this was an exceptional video for many reasons. How many times do some of our projects start to go south and we’re into it to deep and we have to keep going. It can always be fixed one way or another. Bottom line,- it turned out just great. A very handsome clock. Good for you! Carol from California
Thank you so much Carol, I'm glad you like it! 😀
As a long time crafter I completely agreed with your 5 stages and have gone through those myself many times. I'm considering doing a cross stitch pattern featuring those stages if it's ok with you? Thanks for sharing your restorations! I love your channel!
That is absolutely fine with me! That sounds hilarious, by all means feel free!! 😀
Dang Angie, we had one when I was a little someone. I didn't like it back then, but helped me learn time. Now, I've wondered about the clock a lot. Thanks, so enjoyed this one! c
You're very welcome!! ☺️
The clock looks amazing
Sometimes you just have to go with the flow and let the piece give you the direction it wants to go
Again the clock looks amazing
Thank you so much!
Angie this is gorgeous. Thanks for sharing this. Sometimes when my pieces don’t turn out like I want them to I feel like just quitting altogether. So seeing this makes me realize that others go through this process too and that keeps me motivated.
You are so welcome! 😀
its stunning you are very talented would love to see more clock repairs. maybe a grandfather clock.☺keep up the great work
Thank you so much for watching! 😊
Enjoyed seeing something slightly different this week. No shame in the mistake - we all make them and - hopefully - learn from them. The main thing is it turned out beautifully in the end and looks great in your dining room.
Thank you so much for watching! 😊
Thank you for such an encouraging video. You have helped me when I have messed up.a restoration
I'm so glad I can help! Thank you so much for watching! 😊
Very very cool. Congratulations. You knocked it out of the park, again.
Thank you very much!! 😊
Showing your mishaps just endears you to us. I love the finished project!
Thank you very much! 😀
I loved the culprits responsible for messing with the new/old clock.
I love them too. ❤️
Erro? Acho que de um erro se tornou o maior acerto que nem você podia imaginar ficou simplesmente deslumbrante eu simplesmente amei parabéns você é incrível 🇧🇷
Thank you so much for this! I really appreciate it! 😊
Love your work and videos!
Glad you like them!
Great job, great result, and great bravery in sharing! Our gain, even if it was your pain!
Thank you so much for watching! 😊
No mistakes , just new ways of putting your mark on repurposing them 👍🏼
Thanks for that!! 😀
First! For the first time hehe. Thank you, Angie love a variety ❤
You're very welcome!! ☺️
Lovely as always. ❤ That was a wonderful detour from your usual path.
Thank you very much! 🙂
Thanks for sharing...I love what you did
You're very welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed it! 😊
So glad you could save it.
This isn't boring at all! I do more home decor pieces than furniture,, so I always like to see that kind of content. Nice save on the paint OOPS! Great result, and looks perfect in your room.
I'm so glad you like it! 😀
Success! I wasn't sure why this got my curiosity. THEN I realized I have a MCM walnut lamp that needs the same attention. Nasty metal and dull wood. BUT I'M NOT YOU! I'd have 49 uh ohs!
It came out beautiful.
Ok, slightly off-piste, but you've given me confidence to take apart the battery mechanism for our old 'The Game of Life: Twists and Turns' game and see if I can sand off the battery corrosion.
Success. Plan A didn’t work. Seems like less mistake and more about risk and expectations. The brass came off when the rust ended up deeper. Deeper clean of the face and white paint came off. The mechanism wasn’t repairable. I like the video because you’re a pro and your plan B looks amazing.
Looks really good in your space, Angie.
Thanks Amie!! 😀
I once "restored" a Jefferson Golden Hour clock and used metal polish on it and removed all the gold plating. Now i have a Jefferson Silver Hour clock.
When you were pouring the boiling water on the brass apparatus and telling us you made a big mistake, I thought the foam would melt because of the hot water. That is some tough foam. I would have never tried that but it worked for you. I did something similar and I melted the hard plastic case I had plans for storing a special old coin in. I felt dumb for doing that. Whoops. Plastic is not always as tough as we think it is.
After you cleaned brass apparatus and it looked more chrome than brass, I thought it looked pretty good the way it was. Will the gold paint stick on good with future cleanings? The paint I used on a past project rubbed off fairly easily.
I think you did a great job -- particularly with replacing the clock mechanism. I don't think the original was much worth keeping even if it did sort of work because it really didn't look like good quality. You can't expect something like that to last forever and a clock needs to be precise or you are going to be late a lot. A second hand is an absolute must! Adds a lot of elegance to a clock.
I want to get a duplicate of an old kitchen clock we had growing up. I found a copy on eBay but someone else had bought it. At least now I have a picture and I know what company made it. I do not remotely expect it to work so I will have to have the clock reworked or do it myself. You give me hope maybe I can do it.
Yep. Went through all five stages of grief with some Mexican pine furniture I was spiffing up for my daughter. I started with the Odies oil and too much confidence, went oh sh*t when it turned bright yellow, then the rest of the stages as I repeatedly sanded off various finishes and finally landed on a gel stain combination that would give a more “normal” colour.
What a great job you did!!! I did laugh out loud at the accident that put time in another dimension. Not surprised, but definitely tickled!!!
At the end of the day Angie it looks amazing❤❤
Thank you kindly! 😊
Hi from your Philly fan 😄. That clock is classic and beautiful.😍
Hi Bridget! Thank you so much for watching!! 😊
@@TranscendFurnitureGallery You're welcome. Always a pleasure to see you working on your projects.🤗👍🥰
I grew up with a Sunburst clock very similar to the one you’re redoing. I can’t wait to see how it turns out. I know it’s going to be wonderful!
I love this kind of video, Angie!!👍💪
Thank you so much! 😊
Very nice result. You have great taste.
Thank you! 😊
Nacho! lol! The clock is stunning.
Thank you very much! 🙂
My cat totally destroyed the hands on a clock that my son made me. I can't find any like them. Also, my Aunt had a similar clock, so it's really cool you restored yours.
Omg cats! lol after all that…! 😂🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️🤦🏽♀️
this was very interesting I have one similar but mine was not rusted and the mechanism does work just does not keep time well It was made by westclox It takes a c cell battery so I'm thinking possibly 1960's It belonged to my grandparents and was eventually passed down to me
Love it u have put a good idea in my head thanku x
You're so welcome! 😀
You have made a beautiful job of that clock. Too many of them go to landfill and they are really beautiful
