Beautiful mirror hidden under years of grime. A sympathetic restoration, and the owner was correct to leave the old glass in it.

Absolutely right. Even if the old glass was not reflective, I would have put a new piece over the old or behind the old and left the old in place. Very important to keep everything together.

I always find it strange here in the States that antiques can lose value if the piece is cleaned, which keeps so many beautiful pieces trapped in a dark, grimy shell but as shown in this video, the beauty just underneath the layer of grime (or "patina" in the States) can be breathtakingly beautiful.
I have often thought that this must be a practice that developed here because there is very little history. The layers of grime must have been adopted as proof of age and even provenance when accompanied by the right stamp or signature of the craftsman.
      PS regarding masterful craftsman:
He certainly was and it takes one to know one 😊

Dear ATR, I did some quick internet searching for the current time value of what this mirror would have cost in USD. 45 Kopek ( Copeks ) need to be realized against what was the Daily Wage of a manual labourer of 60-70 kopecks in the 1880's. This means that this mirror had the approximate value of 1/2 ( or more ) of half a days wage for a unskilled labor in today's buying power. In the US that would be approximately $ 125 to $ 175 USD per day. So this mirror would have been worth "roughly" $ 80.00 USD today.

OMG! The birch grain was amazing when you revealed it! Out of curiosity, why did you use hide glue to repair the cracked decorative finish (3:46)? Since that joint does not need to be reversible, wouldn't regular woodworker's glue have been a better choice due to a stronger bond? Whatever. Your shellac finish was amazing!!! Incredible transformation, as always, Ahti. Thank you!

Great restoration, but I too would have preferred to have replaced the mirror. It's all very well it being old and having 'soul' but a mirror is meant to be functional. With the old mirror in there I think this beautiful mirror is much more likely to be junked by somebody who doesn't 'appreciate' its soul and just wants to be able to see clearly.

The lack of symmetry in the mirror frieze is not accidental: if you orient the mirror at the correct angle, so that the frieze is symmetrical, you will be able to notice a ripple in the surface of the mirror itself, through which you can access the mirror dimension in which Daniel Kangro has lived for decades. This is why your client insisted on keeping the original mirror.

Once upon a time in the 1880's some lady's very much prized mirror. And now in the 2000's once again a very much desired and prized lady's mirror. The client was right to keep the original mirror glass. If only it could tell you how many children pulled faces at themselves, young girls excited faces going on their first dates, men and women have combed their hair, applied their make-up, adjusted their hats, twirled their moustaches and made sure their appearance was good before stepping outside. How many soldiers going off to fight saw themselves in their uniforms for the first time and how many mothers tears in the last 140+ years of its history. If only it could show you their faces
