Interesting ya know i asked an old dealership mechanic who was around when the dual points came out , he kinda smiled and said when bikes came in for tune ups they were told to just set one set of points on the front ? Wished I'd asked more questions . I was just curious and never had dual plug heads or dual points . Thanks for your video definitely gonna watch the rest on that topic
I wonder what Harley Davidson's thinking of putting dual points on. I wonder what the upside to it the positives. Of course I have tried dual fire and single fire over the years on shovelhead or Evo with electronic type module. And I really didn't feel any difference in those two it's kind of how I equate is there really a positive in making something different
@MoeLarrycurly1 Good question....The only pros I've heard are that the points last twice as long because you're only firing the cylinder you're using and the people who like them said it was the best system out there Who knows? I guess I'll find out. Lol
I’ve heard it said that the wasted spark on single point models can create a slight vibration. Having two sets of points might be a little bit more precise as you have two separate systems and less compromise, although there is a compromise in the rear set of points because the gap might not be the same as the front (changing the dwell angle?) I could be completely wrong on that point. It’s not a question worth wasting sleep over. There are many points to consider 😂 however In my experience, the dual point system is more difficult to set up but slightly smoother.
Check your vin number to see if your flywheel is marked frt or rear timing mark ,manual tells you, plus you have a witness mark on the outside of the distributor that should line up with your advance, retard adjustment plate end, if not the distributor is off a tooth, had this happen to me before in motors that has been torn apart and not installed right
When I timed my 1970 and my 1980 I just get the line coming in the back of the window. I don't know where I learned that but I think that gives it a little bit of advance right off the bat. If I remember right I don't have it square in the window I have a just starting to come in the window and then I go and set the points for right at the point of opening . closing
@bruce1816 Glad to hear!!!! I hope I can pull this off. Just finished timing the rear cylinder and uploading the video now. Thanks for taking the time to comment, It's appreciated 👏
I worked in HVAC for quite a few years a friend of mine owns a company.'re tired now New homes and repairs. Remember the people in the building couldn't wait till I got the heat on the ductwork in cuz they're up there freezing.

@@DG-hb8rh I'm going to try to set the rear cylinder this evening. So we will both see where it takes me. Lol. Thanks for the comment 👍
A great video well explained and well done. Hopefully the bike starts.😢😅
@Mr39knuck Thanks for the kind words, I'm going to start adjusting the gap of the rear points. I'm curious where that's gonna take me.
I guess I am nobody because I watched the whole thing and enjoyed it but it was a good explanation of how the timing is set up and have a good day
@@richardschaffling9882 It was a long one. Thanks for the good words. Stay warm and ride safe.
@ stay warm up there and you ride safe

@@MoeLarrycurly1 Yeah, i just peeked it in the window, which is what they showed in the manual.
I ran a dual points set up on a Pan/shovel for years. It was a batch to get it right but, it had way better power.

@MoeLarrycurly1 It's been a good trade for me. Been doing it since I've been in my teens.
