Great video. Love your garage. I'm working on my 61' in a cluttered 10x10 shed without a lift. Spend most of my time lying on the floor. Can be quite frustrating, but I'm getting good pointers to ease it. Have a good week. 👍
@matthewsteinauer158 Thanks for the comment. I hear you loud and clear.......I'm in my 60's and have a 1950's 12x20 foot unheated garage that was my work spot for the past 38 years. Heated it with everything from an electric heater to oil turbo and finally a propain infrared heater that sets on top of a 20# cylinder. I'm blessed to be able to use my Sons Garage to work on these bikes. Stay warm and have fun!!!!
👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🏍️
Done one a long time ago I don't know how I got it correct. Didn't have a manual. Just tinkered with it till I got it right...
@MoeLarrycurly1 That doesn't surprise me!!!!!! Enjoy the week, and thanks for commenting. I love your channel. ✌️✌️🫰
I'm jumping in. Sub'd. EVO and Flatty here.
Fantastic details on the “mystical mousetrap “thank you for this tutorial only wish I had one on my Harley .
@db3170 Brother.......thanks for taking the time to comment. Ride-um like you stole-um............
Red - N - Tacky, sounds like a gal I used to know.
You should adjust the primary chain first then rear chain ,then adjust your rod then mouse trap rod then the mouse trap then cable
Because you have to move the transmission to adjust the primary chain that changes your mouse trap rod
@michaelbushman7177 That's great to know, because that's exactly the order I followed. All except the rear chain, because I need to drop the wheels and do the breaks and wheel bearings. Must have got lucky!! Thanks for your knowledge. It's greatly appreciated 👏
Good video. I would have taken all the parts off the aluminum bracket. Cleaned each one and reassembled with grease where needed. You can duct tape the clutch cable end into a funnel and pour 90 weigh synthetic oil and it will lubricate that cable really good. Lubricated cables pull easy and last much longer. Use grease on clutch lever pivot and rubbing parts.
@joehovanec1985 Great call!!! Thanks for your input. It's appreciated. Happy Saterday!!!
Great explanation of a mouse trap and how to adjust it as for the bike I love the patina and the look of the old girl the only thing that bothers me is the dent in the front fender
@richardschaffling9882 I hear you....if you think the dent in the front fender is bad, wait until you see the left tank....Lol. Thanks for the kind words, my friend and ride safe.
Great vid ..../ ... Info ..thank you..
@@MoeLarrycurly1 Thanks for the kind words.
for got to add to my comment to take the front to rear lead off of the coil while doing this the reconnect after timing the bike
Good morning , my trick for timing my 64 is I use a dash light socket with a 6 volt bulb and with long enough leads to connect one lead to the battery and the other lead hooked to either the yellow (front) or black ( Rear) connection on the coil for either the front or rear set of points. the light will go out when the points just break with the timer at full advance. enjoy your videos and just wanted to show a different way to skin the cat so to speak.
@@lennykal Nice!!!!! Thanks for the trick and taking the time to comment. Ride safe.
Howdy from the Emerald City. I am also working on a 61'FLH that I picked up awhile back that has been severly neglected by past owners. It has been a challenge that I have accepted. Setting the timing and adjusting the mousetrap are my next projects. Enjoy your videos as I too am learning as I go
@@matthewsteinauer158 Thanks for the kind words. Enjoy the journey!!!! Ride safe.
Good to see how the dual points are done .
@@DG-hb8rh Let's hope I get lucky!! 🙏
Good video and I wonder if somebody timed it before and took a center punch and marked the flywheel
Great question. The mark has definitely been made with a drill bit, and I would think that that would have been done before the lower end was asymbled. If not, drill shavings should have got into the lower end. But........your guess is as good as mine. Thanks for taking the time to comment. It's appreciated.
Well on my 1980 and my 1970 those points I always do at 18,000
I ran a dual points set up on a Pan/shovel for years. It was a batch to get it right but, it had way better power.
@bruce1816 Glad to hear!!!! I hope I can pull this off. Just finished timing the rear cylinder and uploading the video now. Thanks for taking the time to comment, It's appreciated 👏
Hello, I just subscribed to your channel. I had know idea that you had so many things on your site. I’ve been balancing and blueprinting engines for most of my life. I just love vintage Harleys. I used to rebuild lower ends and all of the above. Kinda the noodle attention to every little detail. It’s all about power. Looking forward to seeing you videos 👍
@aishayana4298 Thanks for the kind comment and for subscribing, It's appreciated. Yeah, the vintage scene is a sickness, and I think I might have it. I admire your knowledge. I've never been in the lower end of an engine, at least not yet, that's still a little out of my comfort zone, but I'll get there. As far as blue printing.......that must be another level. Thanks and ride safe.
Interesting ya know i asked an old dealership mechanic who was around when the dual points came out , he kinda smiled and said when bikes came in for tune ups they were told to just set one set of points on the front ? Wished I'd asked more questions . I was just curious and never had dual plug heads or dual points . Thanks for your video definitely gonna watch the rest on that topic
@@DG-hb8rh I'm going to try to set the rear cylinder this evening. So we will both see where it takes me. Lol. Thanks for the comment 👍
Thanks for your comment!!!! Go to our website and open our "playlists" look for "Servicing 1961FL Panhead" There are over 50 videos. Look for "Intake Manifold Leak and Repair" it's a 3-part video. Hope this helps!!!!! Good Luck.
Hi I've ben putting off repairing my dreaded intake leak, time to fix again ,seems i need to change o rings every 6 mo. or so ,always looking for improvement or a new way to extend the time in between changes ? for the panhead , do you have something special going on there ? Is that just the nature of the beast?, I've got o rings and aircraft type clamps are ta doing anything special in that area ?

A great video well explained and well done. Hopefully the bike starts.😢😅
@Mr39knuck Thanks for the kind words, I'm going to start adjusting the gap of the rear points. I'm curious where that's gonna take me.
I guess I am nobody because I watched the whole thing and enjoyed it but it was a good explanation of how the timing is set up and have a good day
@@richardschaffling9882 It was a long one. Thanks for the good words. Stay warm and ride safe.

I worked in HVAC for quite a few years a friend of mine owns a company.'re tired now New homes and repairs. Remember the people in the building couldn't wait till I got the heat on the ductwork in cuz they're up there freezing.
@MoeLarrycurly1 It's been a good trade for me. Been doing it since I've been in my teens.
When I timed my 1970 and my 1980 I just get the line coming in the back of the window. I don't know where I learned that but I think that gives it a little bit of advance right off the bat. If I remember right I don't have it square in the window I have a just starting to come in the window and then I go and set the points for right at the point of opening . closing
@@MoeLarrycurly1 Yeah, i just peeked it in the window, which is what they showed in the manual.
I wonder what Harley Davidson's thinking of putting dual points on. I wonder what the upside to it the positives. Of course I have tried dual fire and single fire over the years on shovelhead or Evo with electronic type module. And I really didn't feel any difference in those two it's kind of how I equate is there really a positive in making something different
@MoeLarrycurly1 Good question....The only pros I've heard are that the points last twice as long because you're only firing the cylinder you're using and the people who like them said it was the best system out there Who knows? I guess I'll find out. Lol
I’ve heard it said that the wasted spark on single point models can create a slight vibration. Having two sets of points might be a little bit more precise as you have two separate systems and less compromise, although there is a compromise in the rear set of points because the gap might not be the same as the front (changing the dwell angle?) I could be completely wrong on that point. It’s not a question worth wasting sleep over. There are many points to consider 😂 however In my experience, the dual point system is more difficult to set up but slightly smoother.
@Mr39knuck 🤔🙂🏍️👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👋🏼
@Mr39knuck Sounds like you've paid your dues. Looks like it's my turn to ante up...Lol Hope it starts......
Check your vin number to see if your flywheel is marked frt or rear timing mark ,manual tells you, plus you have a witness mark on the outside of the distributor that should line up with your advance, retard adjustment plate end, if not the distributor is off a tooth, had this happen to me before in motors that has been torn apart and not installed right
Thanks for the information and the video
You bet!!

There are a,b & c versions of the prim chain tensioner and the 07 version is one of the problem units as was then b version & some later c versions had a few issues too but not as many issues as the earlier a & b versions. Hayden (spring version) & hot bike ls (Hyd version) are good reliable auto prim chain tensioners to rep the problematic oem Hd unit. Happy motoring.
