Can you explain difference between "engine" and "ladder" I'm in UK so I may well know term but never 100% sure

Engine refers to the apparatus with out the Aerial ladder on the top of it. The engine pumps water. The Ladder is the apparatus with the large ladder or aerial on the top of it. I hope this helped.
