  • Update: Richard Giedosh, the former owner of 951 W. Holly St., has been charged with felonies of arson (three counts), causing or risking catastrophe and criminal mischief for a fire that destroyed the property shortly before noon on Jan. 30. Giedosh was on probation at the time of the fire
During the investigation, Giedosh admitted he was inside the residence on West Holly Street on Jan. 30. Giedosh told police he lit a fire in a bucket full of paper and wood to stay warm.
    The property was not insured.
Just after noon Coal Township fire departments were alerted to a working fire. As chief staff began to respond county advised them of multiple reports of a column in the area, shortly after that police arrived and told county flames showing from the structure.
Command than quickly sounded a second alarm. Rescue 193 and Engine 111 were the first units to arrive quickly stretching hand lines and used the engines deck gun to start putting water on the well involved structure. As other apparatus began to arrival several more master streaks were set up as firefighters fought the blaze from the outside due to interior collapse from being well involved.
No cause has been given for the blaze yet but a Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal was on scene near the end of the incident waiting to begin his investigation.

Well done! First line pulled: 2-1/2” hand line. Good start. Directing that line at the lowest area of fire - top marks. Early and very effective use of deck gun - outstanding! I agree with the other commenter that at some point, the gun is just chasing fire around and it should be replaced with cautious use of interior lines to extinguish the fire in detail. Very impressive overall.

I don’t know shit about firefighting BUT I watch enough of these videos and this is one of the rare instances that water was immediately put on a fire. Within two minutes and three seconds of arriving on scene they had the fire hose spraying water and then less than 50 seconds later, they were using what I never see used, the deck gun. In my opinion, this was a job well done.

It fell off a second time moments later, really had me face-palming.
I remember being a 16 year old kid and having the privilege of being a fly on the wall to a pumps class despite being too young to actually take the class. I was walking with my helmet tucked under my arm when someone asked me for a hand putting a hard sleeve back on the engine. I set my helmet on top of my head to free up my hands. I leaned my head back to look up at the spot we were putting the hard sleeve and off came my helmet. Oh boy... the instructor was *not* happy, I learned my lesson that day. Even though I wasn't actually participating in the class and until that point had not touched a single piece of equipment and was standing back I still got a good scolding for not wearing my helmet properly. Although I really had no reason to be wearing any of my gear at all at the time because, again, I wasn't even participating, just watching lol. But the point remained, you never wear your helmet without properly fastening it. Seems like this fireman needs an instructor like that to come into his life.

"Surround and Drown" Ops can still be done incorrectly.
Engine taking the front of the house - mistake #1
Engine leading off with an 1 3/4" hose - mistake #2
Random old man on scene with no gear telling people what to do - mistake #3
Having your first-due ladder come in the direction that gives them no room to set up - mistake #4 (you need them to be able to set up!)
I'm all for dousing this with master streams, but not being able to have your ladder be able to get a crew to take care of the second floor/roof is where this all went wrong. - mistake #5.
Positioning has a key effect in this extinguishment. Of course the dwelling was well-involved, so having the engine use the deck gun on the first floor and ladder have control over master stream operations on the second floor and attic space could've controlled this sooner. First due ladder can't set up - mistake #6
Lose the handlines -- no one is going inside. And also a way to guarantee useful water for your other apparatus. -mistake #7
Having that engine blast anywhere and everywhere on that house pushes fueled-smoke throughout the structure, all of this water is basically doing nothing but spreading the fire around, due to how involved it is. It may put the fire out in that room it's spraying, but the pressure coming from that masterstream also increases airflow throughout the structure, which, already has multiple fire-involved rooms. Increasing this air flow with only one master stream increases the fire spread throughout the structure, making it a game of wack-a-mole for the deck gun, and firefighters on scene still chasing the fire with hoselines.
Thankfully, a skilled ladder-operator was able to position their apparatus to aim their masterstream into the attic space, which eventually lead to the extinguishment of this fire.
I am sincerely sorry for whoever's home this was, and I'll bet you lost everything due to the lack of knowledge behind fire extinguishment tactics of your trusted volunteer fire chiefs.
When will we hold these chiefs accountable the same way we glorify them for putting on a white helmet every January? There is always an election for volunteer fire departments, but never any evaluations to make sure this really is this right person to be in charge of protecting their community...

    • @Mack18Eng
      @Mack18Eng Месяц назад +1

I understand some of your take, but you are dead wrong about positioning. If a defensive person is the initial mode, allowing the engine the front of the building is optimal. The ladders should be from flanking positions for maximum scrub area. You also clearly did not see the power lines on both sides of the structure...a green light for any engine company to take the front.

The use of the deck gun so fast was a very good move and the idea of the large hand line was good but was not used properly! Is was not flowing the proper amount of water to low of pressure or to low of GPM air both no better then a regular small hand line ! And a note . When you have a house of this age more then likely you have individual boards on the roof so you can use your deck gun to blow off the shingles which will let you get water into the attic space thru the spaces between the boards and speeding your extinguishment. But it was gone from the start ! Good video !

Some companies take that long to try to determine what to do. Then the deck gun going within another minute. What is that? Many companies seem to be clueless even how to even use one. But did you note how quickly the fire abated? Maybe it burnt to the ground finally - I got sleepy and had to go to bed. But I would sleep a whole lot better if I knew a company such as this was nearby! Bravo!

That said, without knowing all the details, you are only showing your ignorance when you ASSUME what is going on.
So, for all the know-it-all, armchair, super fire fighters…this fire was at a KNOWN VACANT STRUCTURE. It had a heavy fire load (lots of junk stored inside), with a partially collapsed second floor. Not to mention the suspicious start. The IC had made it known to all personnel that this was a DEFENSIVE ONLY fire attack. The apparatus were placed according to “surround and drown” it.

I think I saw at least three fire departments there. I suspect they are volunteer. But what ever they did a great job getting the fire under control. When the video started and one truck showed up, I thought the whole thing would be on the ground. A very pleasant outcome.

i agree, but the house will be on the ground despite these efforts. the damages are too high. the fact is they avoid any neighbor house being touched by the fire.

Deck guns need to be used more often. The moment you have a water supply, they can kill a fire real fast.

hey, i’d say the first was most likely a probie that probably doesn’t have the required classes (ff1 or ff2) and potentially in an academy doing a ride along. im a probie at my vollie station and when i wasn’t cleared to ride we took our gear on structure fires so they could show us the inside of the house and use it as training to show us how things went from the incipient phase to a big fire. because of the broken glass and unhealthy materials still in the house we couldn’t wear our civilian clothes. he also had no air pack on, so they weren’t gonna be able to nothing anyway.

Additional comment. Firefighters had hands full. That aerial truck was.
      .
totally useless . Or else no one knew how to operate! It would have bee extremely useful on that upper corner where flames were skyhigh . But wait, 4th July Parade is coming and truck must not be muddy up!

Good job with the deck gun, however at least one of the hundreds of Chiefs on scene should have pulled the Firefighters operating the hoselines AWAY from under the master stream, or shut down the deck gun until they were out of the way. Even after the ladder truck began operations, Firefighters with hoses continued to operate near the building. With the extent of the fire; a collapse zone should have been enforced- that chimney was especially scary looking.
