    I really like your way of working and not being bothered by not having the latest and greatest. I share the same thoughts as you do. I'm on Pro Tools 10. I like working with limitations. I think it makes you more creative. Great video, Sir!!

    Hi, really liked this video, always wondered how the tdm or HD systems were put together. I started back in 1994 with ver. 5,6,7,8 on the simple 002 & 003 systems in my basement. But I spent 2 yrs at a pro studio using a HD system in engineering school. Did FOH sound for 30 yrs and got old. Now I built me a 2 story studio on my property. I got away from Protools in 2000 for an engineer job in a nice club in Nashville. But now I got PT ver 12 perpetual and been using Harrison Mixbus 32C DAW for 8 yrs. But since Avid just started back with perpetual licenses, I’m thinking of buying back in at the current version perpetual. I’ll stop there using the new Avid Carbon interfaces…..I’ll stop with this system for a few years to see how Avid does…? Your system sounds fantastic, I don’t think you’re missing much with all the dsp cards and the software you are running. Got another subscriber 😊😊

    I'm still using my PT10 which I got in 2016. When my computer died in 2022, I found a similar one on ebay for $50. All I had to do was move my harddrives to the new computer and I was good to go. I guess I'll stay with this system for as long as I can

    Thank you Devon for this brilliant guide! I followed the steps and now have a 3 card (2 core cards and an accel) PT HD 10 setup on 10.7.5 lion that I’m very happy with! Just out of interest would there be any other virtual instruments that you would recommend that are compatible? Many thanks.

    I’m building 3 (!) very similar rigs right now and it teaches you how to be a tech real quick. One rig is a dual 1.42 GHz G4 that already had OSX Tiger. I installed PT 7.4 on that machine (CD ROM) with iLok. The second machine is almost exactly like the one described in the video, a G5 power Mac dual quad core with 32GB RAM. I have installed PT HD10 (CD ROM 22:42 ) with iLok. The third machine is an Apple xserve rack mountable machine, same specs as G5 power Mac. Some basic issues to keep in mind: The G4 will only fit PCI-X core and accel cards. The G5 will only fit PCI-e core and accel cards. The card pin configurations are totally different. Also, any version of PT is picky about the specific OS you have in the machine. Lastly, be prepared for dealing with bad processing cards and HD cables if you are buying them separately. I had a bad core card when I started building the G4 rig. In my G5 the HD10 software is not loading, it freezes the machine. So this process is not always smooth; prepare for a fair amount of troubleshooting if needed

    Hey Devon, I love all your content! We have almost identical rigs. I’m running HD3, C24 TDM with PT 8.1. with Mac Pro 2008. It’s rock solid. I now only invest in outboard gear, Neve, Manley..Quality mics and instruments. I didn’t realize you could upgrade OS to 10.7.5 Lion with PT 8.1.? I’m running 10.6.8 Snow Leopard. Just curious. Thanks!

      PT 8 runs fine on 10.9 too which is great because you can run a few newer plugins(although the list is very short) that aren't compatible with 10.6. I tried it and it seems to be fine. I've since moved to PT 10. The thing that doesn't work(if I remember correctly is the uninstallation). Anything above 10.9 and you run into the graphical glitch.

    watching this makes me want to resurrect my old HD Accel rig...I have everything except the computer actually...but my cards are all PCI-X from the old G5 days lol...so would a magma chassis be able to run a mix of PCI-X and PCI-e cards, or just one type? The crazy thing about all this, is anytime I go back and hear albums I did on that old system, they always sound better than what I'm cranking out these days on my current up-to date rig...and I can never figure out why...haha...maybe there was some mojo in that old rig that I just never knew was there at the time 🙂

      The Magma chassis can only hold either PCIe or PCIx but not both. Mine is fill of PCIx cards and the mainboard card is PCIe into the Mac Pro.

      I hackintoshed an old HP workstation I bought for $35 and installed PCI HD cards in it. Ran as well as any Apple branded Mac. This was about 5 years ago. Nowadays I'd just grab an old Mac Pro and some PCIe cards. Funny thing is I've had a Digi 192 in my trunk for months now.

    No offline bounce, no Atmos, locked in to Digidesign hardware, etc etc. Glad it works for you and you’re happy, but trying to get an older system in 2023 is quite difficult because you have to find the software and everything unless it’s a turnkey solution from a previous owner.

    • @devon-graves-studio-D
      @devon-graves-studio-D  Год назад +1

      Offline bounce is a deal-breaker for some, that's true. Atmos is a whole subject of it's own, I will do a video on that subject in the future. If I ever go Atmos, I will probably bounce stems into Logic and fake it with Air Pod Pro headphones until I can afford 9 more Focals. Ouch! $$ PT 9 and 10 frees you from the digidesign circle. I do have a Lynx Aurora 16 that works with PTHD 8. Are you doing Atmos? There are only precious few interfaces for that as of yet. I'm still on the fence there.

    • @devon-graves-studio-D
      @devon-graves-studio-D  7 месяцев назад +1

      You would need a TDM pro tools system. Either an older "Mix" system or the HD or Accel system, which would have PCI cards for mixing and processing. Plus you would need a computer and OS system compatible which would tend to be OSX Lion or earlier. My Accel cards have "legacy" ports which is where the 888 would go if I had that. Hope that helps.

    Is it really necessary to have 32 GB of RAM installed, since 32 Bit Pro Tools versions can only use up to 4 GB of RAM? If you've somehow found a workaround for this, maybe you can talk about this in a future video? I'd like to know about that personally. :) Oh and what you said about PT having not changed much over the years... after Arjen donated his PT 24 MIX+ system to me, I went back to his house a year after and asked him about his newer PT rig (HD... something) and he said: "I would've kept my (yours now, haha) old PT 24 MIX+ system if I knew not much has changed really". BUT... this was back in 2013. Arjen now runs PT (whatever... current) HD-X/Matrix or something combination. Don't know much about it and I don't wanna know much about it, because he told me what he paid for it, hahaha. :)

      Interesting point. I never realised that. That certainly explains a few things. In the end if it works, it's all you need. I hardly ever run out of dap, but when I do, I only then start using RTAS if I still need plugins which barely taxes the computer. It's been rock solid.

      I bought the HD8 license recently and have a regular PT10 license on the way. I hope it will work. And I can add the PT10 license to my ilok. Then when I purchase PTultimate Avid helpdesk said it would give me PT11HD and PT12HD. So maybe that will allow me PT10HD too because of the PT10 license on the dongle. But we'll see.

    This is not meant as a troll or flame, but genuine heads up. Just last week I ran an almost twenty(20!) year old version of a DAW on Windows 11. The program executable was built in 2004 for Windows 2000! And it runs on the latest PC hardware and latest Windows version without any problems. That is because Microsoft has 3rd-party software backward compatibility as one of their core values and goals. Something like that is absolutely impossible with Apple who don't give a damn. I'm sorry for any Mac owners in this regard. Having to forage ebay for old hardware like that. There is no guarantee this old hardware will remain available (and used hardware is often disgusting/dirty and unreliable) and you're missing out greatly on the progression of hardware (PC hardware from 2004 was like 100 times less powerful than it is today). So I wouldn't like to have to maintain or hunt for 20 year old PC hardware on ebay, like you Apple people have to do. That would be an absolutely absurd idea for me as PC/Windows user.

      My M-Audio 2626 works great in Windows 10, but isn't compatible with my 5,1 Mac Pro anymore running High Sierra. It's almost criminal.

    • @ZeroG
      @ZeroG 9 дней назад

      It's not Apple's fault that Digidesign/Avid doesn't offer backwards compatibility.
      All my MOTU audio interfaces going back to the 828 from 2003 works perfectly on my M1 MacBook Pro using the latest macOS 14.5 and the same could be said for RME interfaces. It's just Avid/Digidesign who can't be arsed to update their drivers for older hardware because they don't care about their customers. Yeah I had to buy a newer version of the DAW to make it work, but software developers gotta eat too.
      It would be nice if Apple had compatibility environments like Windows, but you can always run a virtual machine to run older versions of Mac (or Windows!) on a Mac.

    • @AngelicStreak
      @AngelicStreak 9 дней назад

      @@ZeroG First, virtual machines are a non-solution for real-time audio applications. Second, you have it backwards. No ISV is going to maintain their software e.g. for Windows 2000 or old MacOS today (regardless of if it's as rich as Avid), for example. It's the OS vendor, e.g. Microsoft's job and noble goal to maintain backwards compatibility of their OS with old proper software produced by 3rd parties for the OS, as far as possible. And funny how you mention audio drivers. It is incredible, but you can run a driver written for say Windows NT, some 25 years ago, on Windows 11. Something you couldn't do on any Apple device even if you wanted to.
