I will stay with my 4.1 system. Purchase a great set of front LR speakers. Dump the centre channel. Get an ok Rear RL speakers and a good sub that is all you need. People forget that the only reason for the centre channel is the anchor speech to the screen for those that are sitting to the far left and right such as in a big theatre. We for the most part don't need that in our homes. We don't need to listen to those horrible sounding horn speakers in the theatre where DB is all that matters. We can do so much better in our homes. So the next level after Atmos would be what. How many stupid speakers are we going to "need". How about a sub for each speaker? And a buttkicker in your chairs to "enhance" those supper lows. Wait a minute each speaker should also have lights that can be controlled also to mimic the lighting of what was going on. Things are gone stupid insane.

That's a good point. I think phantom centre sounds better than the centre speaker. The centre is just too isolated sounding, even for movies. For music it is really bad imo. Thanks for your comment!

I do realise there is actual atmos music. But really it is a cinema audio format. I love Atmos for my movies and I have the speakers above where they are meant to be, none of this upfiring which does not give you true atmos. Sure some artists could mix in atmos, or even 5.1 audio but essentially these are cinema audio formats. Sure some music can sound good that way but again mostly music sounds better in stereo. What I am saying if you are using the bouncing off the walls and ceilings you are not hearing actual atmos, it is NOT a true representation of the sound format (Atmos). Also for you to say 5.1 etc never took off..I respectfully disagree. Many people nowadays have an atmos or 5.1 home cinema set up. Including myself. BTW I can make my music into 5.1, I don't have the software to create an atmos track for my music (yes I am a musician too). I have to add this too, yes 3D tvs fell off the face of the earth but the older audio sound formats have almost disappeared off the face of the earth, for a completely different reason, it is simply progression.. ....the reason barely any one uses pro logic (which you needed to be receiving a nicam stereo signal to your reveicer, to get pro logic at the time), is progression. As after original pro logic, they got it better, so then dolby digital comes along, then HD audio formats over taken dolby digital with true HD and HD master audio. Now it's Atmos, which like the pro logic needing a nicam signal, the atmos needs that HD mster audio or Dolby true HD to get. Atmos is inbedded into these HD audo fromats BTW. But all these older audo formats did not drop off the face of the earth, it is simply progression, that is all it is. We have come a long way in home cinema audio formats since the pro logic days. BTW I also have the night of the opera Blu ray audio, I also have the DVD audio disc. It sounds great, the voices in the prohets song is amazing. Also war of the worlds jeff wayne SACD sounds great that way. The brothers in arms SACD by dire straits sounds absolutely brilliant....All of those contain mullti channel audio tracks and I love listening to them. BTW albeit we slightly disagree on some things you picked up a sub ;) A sound person like myself I am interested in watching your vidz. Oh and what do I think, Atmos is not a gimmick, if done correctly it gives another dimension to your sound and I noticed it straight away when I heard it. Not only is it surround sound, it is just like going outside, When you are outside you are aware of sounds coming from above you not just around you. So it gives an additional presence in the room, which I love. But all in all it is a hit and miss with music. It is just better for movies, which is hardly surprising as Atmos is actually a cinema sound format. P.S I have atmos and it is set up correctly, it sounds brilliant. Bouncing off the walls is not a true representation of the sound format.

I use a C24 with a Mac mini M1 with the latest version of PT. I have to open PT under Rosetta to fully use the c24 and uncheck the Eucon controller. It's an amazing desk, pretty much like a real console. Previously, I had a Command 8 but I barely use it since I've had only 8 faders. Now, with 24 faders, I use it all the time. Making automation with real fader instead the mouse is awesome!! I don't use the analogue part of the c24 because I have several pre-amp better than those on the c24. I just wish to use the talback function like "auto talk back" but I have to integrate it to my Apollo's system. Sometimes, I forget to open or close talk back so this function will be very interesting for me. Any way, I love my c24 😍! 😃

Hell yeah, you think just like me, man I'm stuck on ProTools eight but you know what I've been able to invest all my money into great microphones and great fucking preamps and let me tell you something great preamps and obviously microphones to make a difference. Every year we have a couple of features that I want, but you know what I'll live without them. If I have to as long as I can, my computer and combination with my interface and software is a combination that cannot get voca-lign which happens to be my favorite plug-in ever but you know what I'm doing mostly metal and I'm gonna have to live with it for a bit. In the end, though I can record a solid 40 tracks which is way more than what I need and I don't need to plug and unplug things just because of the fact that I reinvested in another 192 system the other day, lol I do want to eventually get to at least ProTools 10 in order to do so, I will need to upgrade my computer my software, but at least I don't have to upgrade the interface. In the end, my Old School system is better than most peoples modern systems..

I still have my sacd 5.1 Nine inch nails album from around 2000’. It was awesome on my home theater back then. I was actually hoping trent would be making Atmos content since he is usually experimenting with whatever is available. I think certain music might be more exciting to mix in atmos like electronic or pop where you can get a little more creative maybe with how you use sounds than say a typical band might be mixed. I have a basic atmos setup now with 2 height channels and im working on a decent 7.2.4 setup now. As far as I understand it 7.4 plus 1 or 2 sub channels would be the standard for music and film. But Im really liking some albums already and it’s not even setup the best right now so I cant wait to hear things in 7.2.4 when my new system is completed.

i live in the attic 5x4 meter and 2.5 meters angled high room filled with 9.1 sistem . using music decoder from 2.0 audio to 9.1. but its hard eq~ed to sound good for music.

Yes, 1073 sounds slightly more cleae and open in highs. But my conclusion of the video is that anyone with a decent interface can make a record sound good if he knows what he is doing. You made a “cheap” interface sound close to a neve and that’s amazing.

Also, one thing I failed to mention is that the Audient was quieter. The Neve across all channels would definitely have some noise build-up.

This is a brilliant premise but I have an Audient and came to figure out if I need a neve (as title suggests) and this doesn’t help unfortunately- so wish you showed that at same time without rest of chain. Nice singing.

Hi! I didn't means to suggest anything in particular. I did do the acoustic guitar without any eq or compression. The reason I processed on the way I. is that is how I actually record, and is the best reason to have the eq and compressors for tracking. But in the end, the Audient is awesome, less noisy and with the plug-ins gets you pretty darn close. I find that comparing mic pre to mic pre is too subtle and barely worth considering. Its about the whole chain to me.

@@devon-graves-studio-D Yes thanks. I guess your comment that it is so 'subtle' is an answer to my Neve preamp question in of itself. I see now your video title was really about that whole chain i just presumed it was testing those elements separately against each other. With my context going in being curious about the Neve, what your vid actually taught me is , that if I bought one outboard piece of gear I should probably buy a compressor. I'd (stupidly) never really thought about how it effectively 'gain stages' your recording before it hits your DAW. Lately Ive been going in and doing that manually (after watching some YT videos about it). I usually do the fast compressor/slow compressor (1176/LA-2) in-series-trick with vocals. So I guess it would make sense to buy a hardware version of a faster (1176 style) and have it knock off the really loud stuff before it goes into the DAw where I might further compress more subtley with in the box stuff? Or what type would you do if you only had one hardware compressor?

Thank you Devon for this brilliant guide! I followed the steps and now have a 3 card (2 core cards and an accel) PT HD 10 setup on 10.7.5 lion that I’m very happy with! Just out of interest would there be any other virtual instruments that you would recommend that are compatible? Many thanks.

I LOVE Pro Tools and I hate to spend 400$ each year to get it up to date. But I am damn fast on it. I could use Logic, Digital Performer, Cubase, Reaper, Studio One or Ableton Live and I would be happy, but not as fast. I still have my HD3 with I/Os somewhere in my basement, just in case, that I payed somewhat 20k $ and I can't sell for 700... And I now mix on my M1Pro laptop... If I had to choose a different one it would be Digital Performer.
