Psychotic Waltz is one of the most original bands ever. Their unique sound combined with this guy's incredible voice and lyrics, it made me fall in love with them. So glad I actually saw them live back in 2013!
Cool personal saga. Chronicles of an evolving musician. I saw Deep Purple about 1969 and Blackmore blew me away. However, it was so painful for me to see him throw his guitar and grind the headstock into the ground. I wanted to cry because in about 1965 I worked all summer long in order to save enough money to go to Sears and Roebuck and buy a guitar and amp. I refused to see the Who when they came to town because I knew that it would kill me to see them misusing instruments. My first passions were Buddy Hollie, Elvis, and Johnny Cash. When I saw Hendrix I was shocked and he really seemed dance and love his instruments and brought the Strat and Sunn amp to life. That is right, Sunn, not Marshall. In the early 70s I was traveling and doing solo gigs in bars and came to the realization that I wasn't going to be able to make a living playing music, so I went to plan B so that I could afford to support my addiction of buying musical gear and recording equipment. Here I am not some 50 years later with good health and a continued passion for music and recording. I think that my passion has remained because I didn't have to experience the angst of being pissed off because I couldn't make a bunch of money from my passion. You are a good story teller--keep it up brother.
What I remember about this time was you guys rehearsing and writing in the jam room about seven hours a day, four nights a week, for a year before that VFW gig because you all were steadfast about 'no cover songs.' 😉
I joined that class my freshman year and I was there with Brian and Dan . And Eddi gave me my first guitar lesson a local guitar shop. I was at the party with Ron and a few guys from our neighborhood at Ward's parents house.
Eddi! How you been? I'm going to San Diego to see a new band from Leeds at the Casbah next week. Got a few free tickets for you if you can make it. Please oh please...

No, not boring at all. I watched it all from start to finish. Very enlightening. I just recently got into Psychotic Waltz after reading the book Mean Deviation, Four Decades of Progressive Heavy Metal by Jeff Wagner, where the band was mentioned. I know I'm a few years behind with both the book and Psychotic Waltz, but I have been listening to Bleeding and The God Shaped Void for several months now. I just thought to myself, WOW, why have I not ever listen to this band? They are amazing! Being a Progressive Metal fan since the late 80s, I gave a listen to many bands in that genre since then, but Psychotic Waltz never made it on my radar. Thankfully I finally listened, and now I continue to make up for lost time with my regular listening. No, not boring at all. Thank you.
Thank you so much for sharing this story. Psychotic Waltz has meant so much to me over the years and it is so interesting to get this background stories. Event that snippet of Spiral tower gave me goosebumps. 😍
When I heard "into the everflow" for the first time it was one of the biggest musical experience of My life. THANK YOU for all the great music by Psychotic Waltz. Saw PW twicw live in Denmark.
Hey devon, just wanted to say you're a big inspiration to me. I'm 16 and enjoying all of your wonderful PW and deadsoul tribe albums. You're amazing man
Hey man you have to continue that kind of storytelling. I really had goosebumps! when you played Spiral Tower! I started listening to your music when I was in a band as a university student back in 2002. I was so hooked! Still now I consider psychotic waltz as one of my favorite bands if not the favorite. ❤️
In this galaxy, there's a mathematical probability of three million Earth-type planets. And in all of the universe, three million million galaxies like this. And in all of that... and perhaps more, only one of you. Not boring at all... "Hint of the past" Parkway Plaza... Organ Salesman you took your breaks with sometimes... lol... Keep it coming my old friend! ^v^.............................
Awesome! My old friends still remember my black leather jacket, with white hand painted Psychotic Waltz on the back,.. back in the 90s,... you are the best! Tell us more stories!
Hey Devon! Just stumbled upon your channel. Very, very old fan here. How old? Well, I'm still a proud owner of the 1988 PW demo which I purchased via mail order over here in Germany, and a copy of the first CDs of A Social Grace on the Sub Sonic label. It's been over 2 years already since The God-shaped void, any new music on the horizon? Doesn't really matter to me if PW or solo.... Cheers, neighbour (I'm living in Munich, you've been living in Austria for a long time now, so we're basically neighbours.... ;-)
Thank you so much for telling us your story and the band's story. I hope you continue. I have a thousand questions, but I feel you'll go into what was important or memorable on your own, you're a delightful storyteller, and you're telling a story that is meaningful to a dedicated fanbase. Your music was and continues to be culturally significant and it is good you're chronicling it!
I Could Watch You & Hear You Telling All Of Your Stories For Hours... Among All The Others, You Also Have The Gift Of Storytelling Thank You For Sharing... MAGIC 🖤🎼
Hey Devon, what a great video, thank you man! I also went to Santana High School, class of '89. I actually took a few guitar lessons from Brian McAlpin when I was in high school, it was awesome and helped me learn so much! Brian was so nice and I was pretty star-struck at the time, and his sisters were very nice to me too. I remember I got to watch Aslan practice in a little building (with mattresses on all of the interior walls) next to Blue Meanie's record shop in El Cajon once... man I was deaf for a week afterwards, but was blown away by the experience! I also think I got to see you guys do a show with Infrared, from what I remember they were great but the crowd were almost all pure Aslan/Psychotic Waltz fans! Anyways thanks again for sharing so much of your life with the world, you are an amazing artist and I hope we get more of this in the future!! \m/
This was great! I saw you guys at Club Rio in Phoenix when you opened for Dream Theater. I was so blown away that I purchased Social Grace that night. I still have the album and program which I proudly framed and display on my living room wall.
Wow. That all takes me back. Lol. Thank you for mentioning my dad. He was awesome. Doug was so cool. Great memories. Except Rusty. I had no idea he did that or I blocked it out. Lol. Great story. Child was so awesome. I miss those days.
I found psycotic waltz around 2020 after the beginning of covid and my dad was first being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, that music helped me through and still does. That particular mix of prog and thrash on the guitars definitely has contributed to my playing sub conscious or not and most of all that singing. No wonder DIO was an inspiration because that is the only acceptable comparison IMO
Bro I forgot about this band and came back 2 years ago to find "while the spiders spin" had just come out. I originally came over from Ayreon back around 2005 a la The Human Equation. Fantastic vocals and epic sound.
Wow, blown away, my friend. It's so intersting how our musical roots take shape. I started with trumpet, which gave me a headache, but it lead me into playing bass in my Jr. High Classical Ensemble. We played all over California. Change in school districts and I'm introduced to jazz band and you fine upstanding fellas! The reason i know how to play standup and fretless. Yes Eddi can certainly play more than 27 instruments. And very very well, I might add. Did you know that Jason later moved up to LA area in early 90's to join my band Life Til Now? He's still here making great music. I've always been deeply inspired by your talents, vocal, lyrical, and musical on that beautiful G&L. Looking forward to many more stories. I miss you man.
Devon, thanks for sharing that! I love the in-depth stuff you lay on us. I watched that on 2 parts (yes it was big), but it was all great! Is there any chance we can hear those early Psychotic Waltz Demos? Or maybe even release a Box Set with all the PW stuff! Demos, out-takes, new renditions etc! Love to hear more stories and would LOVE to see the other guys talk too! Hope you and your family are all good and hope for new music and to see you playing live again. Cheers! Btw, this nugget about "Buddy Lackey" was the greatest trivia i heard in the last years! Did NOT expect that name to come where it came from. There's still fog around it though. Too bad we don't have any recorded songs from your father!
I have no recording from my father unfortunately. He quit pursuing music after he lost me as a young one, according to him. He had an offer to record that he walked away from.
I watched your video randomly and had NO idea you were the lead singer of the band Aslan/Psychotic Waltz. I have the Aslan demo and it’s my prized possession of my heavy metal demo collection. You are one HELL of a singer!
IIRC, my cousin (Long time artist and friend of the band) said that another band (from Ireland I think) had already released music under the Aslan name. I'm sure Devon can fill in the details.
really cool to listen to all this. burn the night is actually on some european compilation cd, i love that song. so that demo tape was before aslan-before reach for the stars /no glory? or after it? if there are any more songs out there from these early days they need to be heard!
Dammit! Just as I'm getting excited to hear more - it's over. Thanks for taking the time, Devon. Can't wait for more. Hopefully at some point some of the other guys can check in and tell a story or ten.
You are such a wunderfull Person. I am very Mad about the people who don't know you. And thanks to the Rock Hard magazine. About 25 years ago they wrote that you have to Check it Out. Since then i am very deep into prog music and of course it Made me starting with the guitar. Now i am addicted and will never be better Off. Thank you! And i Hope everything is OK with Brian. Man, i Wish i would have Seen you live. By the way, mosquito was the First Song. I think i listened to it about 30 Times that day. Why is everybody into Hip Hop and bullshit music. A small Family is cool but brings No money.
So surreal to watch as someone that grew up across the street from Hole In The Wall Pizza and that rode to high school in Norm's blue van. I don't want to be 57 yet, dammit!
Holy shit! Its you....! Wow! I recal the first time seeing you on San Diego on a battle of the band fight and was so so so sooooooo fkng upst you guys did not get 1st place! The moment you came on and using a cane then BOOOM! The fans ran to the stage and was blown away with your talents, all of you. Yeeey your around and a channel? Nice! 3:13
Mike did so much more than the album covers. Mike was like then 6th member. The visual to the sound. He designed all of our T shirts and concert flyers. He designed our stage sets. He went one the road and showed film and slide projections... He was the 6 member. We miss him so much!
Thanks for sharing with your fans Devon, yours is an interesting tale for sure. Also, I´d love to hear you do a Jethro Tull cover on your channel some day!
...god dammed, I was so into your story tale , that I didn't track the time...I was back in time and then suddenly you just finished it...Maybe this is what woman have in mind when they said "you made me wet and then you left me"...I cant`t thank you enough for your stories! Sorry for my bad english!

Thanks for the mention Brother. I Love You!
Very cool to hear about your school daze! Miss ya brother. Hope you're doing ok, and if you're in AZ... hit me up and we'll jam a little!

Wow, thanks Mike 991 !
I bought a cassette in El Cajon back in 1990. They said, “check out this local band!”
This is awesome. Can you go into more detail with Aslan and the reason for the name change? Good stuff!
