Calcaneus stress fracture: Signs, symptoms and treatment options

- A calcaneus stress fracture is a stress fracture of the heel bone. This injury usually results from overuse, especially in runners. It often presents as lingering or worsening heel pain. Usually the stress fracture resolves with rest and avoiding any repetitive impact on the bone until pain disappears.

These injuries often affect runners, especially women in their fifties. A runner with a calcaneus stress fracture will usually complain of pain that initially starts after a certain amount of running but gets better with rest. As the problem gets worse, she will have pain earlier in the run, and the pain will take longer to go away after the run. As it progresses to a stress reaction, or later a stress fracture, the pain will not go away with rest, and often the pain is present during activities of daily living, such as walking.
A physician who examines a runner with a calcaneus stress fracture can usually reproduce pain along the heel. Unlike the pain with plantar fasciitis, which is typically on the sole of the foot at the heel, the pain with a calcaneus stress fracture is more spread out all along the heel. Typically, the physician can squeeze the sides of the heel together and recreate the pain.
The physician will usually order x-rays, although they are often negative, even with a stress fracture. The physician might order a bone scan or MRI.
Patients can recover from a calcaneus stress fracture without surgery. Rest from running, wearing a walking boot or protective shoe, or even putting the patient on crutches are usually enough to get the fracture to heal.

Hey I'm 14 and skate I started to feel pain and squeezed there and it hurts
Year ago after jumping on tramboline, both calcaneus' became tender. The pain has got worse and is the worst in the mornings. It has been a year and the pain is still there. Cast?
doc.. my heels hurts upon waking up in the morning, when sitting with my feet hangs. it hurts so much but then after i change position it hurts less, but the pain is there still but mostly hurt during the morning and while sitting lonh... how can i cure this calcaneus fracture... is it severely damage?
After working seven days a week for over three years my right heel is now giving me so much pain that I can’t even walk around without pain I can arrested so I can ice it it still hurts I had my doctor give me a Cortizone shot that’s the only thing that works but it stops working after a month and a half
People kept telling me I had plantar fasciitis, but I just didn’t feel like that was right. This is it!!
Same to me
Same! Are you fully recovered yet?
same to me
Same happened with me, the pain keeps coming back after few weeks of physiotherapy
Same
The first Utube video I’ve found that describes my injury to the tee. Just need one now that provides a solution. Thanks.
Me too
Best solution is to stay off of it as much as you can. Your body should be able to heal back correctly in time. Worst case is surgery.
You did an amazing job at describing what this feels like and how it progresses
Super video and lovely to see a proper Clinical Doctor...not needing or suggesting MRI for everything...Well done.

All I wanna do is play football 😭
Did u ever recover. I’ve had this for over a year now !!!!
I wanna play basketball again 🥺😔
@@commendationK same bro I cry too much when I cannot
This shit has robbed me the ability to play basketball, it sucks
I think this is a first video for calcaneus bone pain, all other videos only plantar fasciitis, if I say to doctor he say u have heel spur, no I have pain on side not on bottom?
I switch 3 different doctor, Mri, Xray inflammation medicine icy hot bangey many more treatment but still have pain since 10 years.
How long will it take to recover?
I walk everywhere I go(speed walking typically and hours distance too)and this is something that’s happening to me :( I don’t have a car so I have to walk. I have bruising on the sides on my heels and on my ankles as well.
As a produce clerk for a large department store with a large produce department. About a month I was pulling a pallet with apple boxes stacked to the sky. When I heard a loud pop. Then felt a sharp pain shoot through my heel to my ankle. I ended up walking it off. Eventually the pain subsided, until 5 days ago . I was pulling a pallet and POP it happened again. Pain is 100 times worse than before with no relief. Watching this has me thinking I really messed my foot up.
This sounds exactly like the pain I am experiencing but I also have plantar fasciitis and doctors can’t see past that. I want my life back. 😢
raynbogrl1 same😢
I was just diagnosed with the calcaneus stress fracture 2 days ago my doctor said it could be because of not only my activity level but my plantar fasciitis that I have in the same foot so I favor walking on the side of the foot that is now injured my doctor put me in a soft cast and a boot for at least two weeks and if all is good in two weeks I'll get my cast off but still have to have a boot for another two weeks
How long will it take to heal
I played a two hour soccer game last night. Woke up with heel pain. Couldn’t even walk on it the whole day. Will see how I feel thru the end of the week.
6 weeks I go I fell down the stairs because I just miscalculated the distance between steps (I was looking down at my phone at the same time 😞) The doctor said it's suspicion of fissure on calcaneus bone and they gave me a boot and crutches. I've been walking short distance at home and it still hurts (stabbing sharp pain). It's so hard to be in bed and rest my foot for weeks and weeks, I'm getting very sad and want to walk normally again.
And how Long typically before you Can run again?
Looks like I might have calcaneous bone stress fractures in both feet. Happened from too much tennis probably. What is the best remedy going forward? Thanks for a nice video.
I think this is what I have. Happened when I was riding my bike I bailed out and all my weight came down on my heel very hard
I stacked it off my BMX today riding downhill maybe 15-20kms an hour on somewhat wet roads as it was sprinkling moments earlier, wearing just flip flops no proper shoes. I have no idea how I managed to land on my feet with the bike next to me and hands on the handlebars as I landed very heavy on my left heel knees bent I almost collapsed but the momentum of the bike had me running with it so I don't fall. Now I'm on a severe limp!! Might need to XRAY tomorrow morning. Throbs now and again too get well soon man!
I fell off the bed steps to her two years now had surgery with one screw still in pain or can I angle
THIS IS WHAT I NEEDED THANK YOU
i hit mine on a metal chair.. it really hurts now .. thanks for the info.. I run a lot too
I hit mine on a wooden chair while trying to copy a tik tok dance.
Symptoms seem very similar to what I’m experiencing. If I haven’t got Aircast short walker on I’m in pain when walking.
The hardest thing is to stop running.
For me, I dont feel any pain when I am running even more than 15 miles etc.
But when i am staying in a particular way, i will feel a problem... Quicker i walk, less I feel the pain...
Okay hear me out, I am 19. it was 9am. One family member assulated the other and I quickly jumped out of bed being woken up by yelling and ZOOMED out my bedroom door out the hallway, jumping from the first stair step all the way to the 8th step landing body weight on my poor little right heel. I am a pre-nursing student so I knew this was the outcome but boy that hurt like hell. The pain got worse as days went by, its been almost two weeks and still in pain with mild swelling
Hey did you fracture you're heel? Have you recovered in the past 3 months?
Calcaneus stress fracture in all cases can be recover by 45 day plaster or operation must with local anaesthesia.
I hurt my calcaneus my landing wrong on my scooter
Lol me to landing my first triple whip out of a bank
I am a 48 year old female and have had pain in the side of my heel for about 6 weeks. There is the potential I have a calcaneal stress fracture. I recently increased my training for a race I am doing. My race is now only two weeks away so I have decided to back off on my training to decrease my risk of further injury. I have an appointment with my orthopedic surgeon for five days after my race. Hopefully it is just bursitis :)
Hey is it better now?
i believe i have the exact same issue as you.
Please do respond i would appreciate it a lot.
i get nervous about these kinds of things because i don't have money to fix it
I got mine being stupid foolish thinking I was 20 years old and propelling myself forward with my right foot while riding a pallet jack like a scooter in the wearhouse where I work. Now I am in pain specially first thing in the morning and whenever my foot cools off and get back to moving it.
I woke up with this pain two mornings ago from now and I’ve been going to my Hs football camp for 3 weeks now and I can’t even do my best this week I don’t got time for no boot😂
i feel you my camp started this week and my cleats are tight and i can’t even run in practices
I've had plantar fasciitis twice before. My doctor says I have it again. I dont think so. This is presenting way different from the previous times I've had it. And I think its either a stress fracture or a nerve entrapment.....and im leaning more towards a stress fracture. Explains my symptoms more closely than anything else. Thanks for the info.
I hope your foot feels better soon, because mine has been bothering me lately.
Just came from my doctor today I have a stress fracture on my heel. My foot throbs with pain. My podiatrist thought it was plantar fasciitis that was over 3 months ago. I can barely stand to walk on it now. My sport doctor is going to order MRI and put me in a boot. He doesn’t want me putting any weight on it. I’m using a knee scooter until MRI and boot. This is a horrible time with Christmas and shopping and cooking
I injured my heel stomping. Years ago and I’m a dancer and I reinjured it by landing too hard on my heel a few weeks ago. I was guessing it was a stress fracture but watching this video, I don’t think it is. It hurts to put weight on it when I walk but it is stable and it doesn’t hurt when I squeeze it from the side. That actually provides relief so I’m thinking maybe it’s some thing with the tendons on the bottom of the foot connecting to this phone. Thank you for the video
I hurt my heel while trying to copy a dance on Tik Tok I jumped in the air and my foot hit a wooden chair and ever since then my foot has been hurting for weeks when I walk. I'm glad I found this video and I hope your foot heals too.
Two days ago, I fell from 7ft sidewall, and landed too hard on my right heel, since then it hurts so much to put weight on it when I walk, I also feel pain when I squeeze from the side. How is your heel doing now? What treatments did you try?
I like your video still I don't know what my problem is really confused
High David I was in a car accident two years ago and Four months now. Still recovering from a broken femur. Right foot that’s broken bones but the hospital didn’t do anything to it. Now having issues and problems going to a university for care that’s part of the hospital and getting the run around. In January I had a CT of the foot and it showed that many different broken bones have healed. Big toe doesn’t touch the ground now when I was in the hospital there X-rays showed broken bones in foot of 2nd and 3rd metatarsals. When released they never told me or put anything on me. I was in the hospital a month then out patient for Seven months. Now my foot is deformed and hurts can’t walk gets swollen when I do. When I did get X-rays at the university they told me that I had a broken foot that has healed, but not not what my CT disc has showed a lot more than they told me. Because they didn’t know I had a CT disc done before going there. I have to where soft sole shoes just to be able to walk around and stand. Seems like they are keeping things from me,but the world of goggle you can find things out. Should they have set them at hospital thanks. To prevent what I am going through now.
Dr David Geier,
Hope you're doing well. I'm writing because I have severe pain and swelling in the soft tissue of both my heels. Started working out with a trainer but I think we were pushing too hard.
Now my heels are permanently bruised and they've been that way for over a year, just my heels. I've used OTC creams, compression socks, bath salts, running shoes, foot inserts, and aspirin every day.
Zero improvements. They feel hot at night and they've now developed these callouses or thick skin padding that makes it difficult to feel warm or cold floors. My drs dont seem to know what it is.
Please help. I can send you pics
hay how do u put up with brokering bone in ankle
Thank you, very informative.
I just jumped off the stairs 3hours ago and have been feeling it for a while
hard to jump and hard to run because of heel fracture
i cant tell if ive fractured my heel or not. I cant walk becuase it hurts but i have no bruises or swelling
I still have pain after walking boot and cast.
I'm still going to Dr. This is brutal pain
Hi Dr. David Geier! Two months ago... I broke the two bone in my forearm. I went at hospital and 1 month later the bone healed with an angle so I had a surgery but still didn’t had anything in my arm (they didn’t cut thru my skin). 1month after the surgery... the radius was again tilt but they said that by growing up the bone will be as lined up than a straight line. But there’s the problem... the tilt of my radius is annoying me and we can see it kinda easily so I would like to know if by growing up it will get lined up? Secondly... I would like to know after how many time the "fur" on my arm will go away? And finally... I would like to know what’s the best way to muscle up my arm? I subscribed and I’m waiting for answers!
Ps: sorry if it has some errors. I’m french so it’s possible that in some sentence you don’t understand what I’m saying.
My stress fracture is of the bone spur where it’s attached to the calcaneous at back of heel. Seems like a rare issue.
Apparently really common I have two at the moment! One in each foot 😂
i had this when i was trying out for basketball
I was using the Powerfit Elite (shaking workout machine) and it was too much, too often...Resulting in this heel stress fracture.
Waiting for xrays. Been fighting pain since February but doctor suspects stress fracture
How to control patellar tendinitis video please. I’m a football player at semi pro lvl and my patellar tendinitis has been a reoccurring annoyance and I think one of your videos could help
Great idea. Thanks!
Thank you for sharing. i am very interesting
Thank you this helped me a lot thank you
I'm 29 years old and i've been living with my calcaneaus stress fractures on both heels for over 8 years ever since i worked in retail, being timed every 8 minutes to roll a rack of clothing onto the floors when i worked on concrete floors at Savers. I was diagnosed with achilles tendonitis in both feet but i feel like it's the wrong diagnosis because nothing has helped. I do physical therapy just about every year, i do stretches but it's extremely painful so they are short stretches. I've come to the point where i've just been living with my pain and am used to it but it feels like it's worse some days. I wake up in the mornings and my feet are so stiff i can't walk right. I can't stand in one spot longer than a couple minutes or my feet start hurting and i have to sit down. I have to ice my feet every morning just to walk but icing is also painful. I take naproxen for inflammation but it doesn't really help and obviously will never cure my pain. Doctors have said surgery is an option to "cut my tendons" but i've seen steven kings horror flick with achilles tendon cutting and it's just not an option for me. I've used a tens unit, cortisone shots, voltaren gel, biofreeze, and many others but nothing feels close to touching the pain. I've had mri's, and x rays but nothing shows up. The only thing i've found that helps are foot inserts and wearing foot casts at night. My feet hyperextend when i sleep so the casts help tremendously! It's honestly taken over my life, this constant pain i battle with every day. I feel like i'll be in a wheelchair at age 35 if i don't try harder to help my situation. I've cried in pain so many times because i just don't want to be in physical pain anymore but there is no cure for it and you just can't not use your feet.
Has it ever gone away
@@fiv3up no :"( but i'm hopeful
Same problem here I'm from India I cannot massage n even can't touch that much painful I applied so many gels but no use, what about you?
same issue living with pain 2 years now. i am 33 year old male
On my second day of playing tennis I got bad heel pain and everyone said it was my shoes but as I played tennis or walked around it got worse and hurts even when not on it, I iced, taped, elevated and everything… so maybe I’ll go to the doctor
I'm a sprinter. I got this injury when I tried to take off. My outer side of left foot heel area hurts
i've been skating and i landed wrong going off a high drop and 6 weeks later i'm still in pain, i skated lightly like 2 weeks ago without much pain but after i now have a small brown bruise under my feel and i have pain only there on the bottom and barely the side of my foot like on the edge
i've been icing everyday for 4 days now but i don't know
a player I went against in football was aggressive and legit drop kicked the back of my heel. It hurts so bad
I have pain on bottom of heel as well is inside. Sharp pain goes up with activity. Gets worse throughout the day with activity. Thoughts?
I play football and my heal hurts so bad but I don't want to go to the doctor and maybe waste money so I bought a brace a gel ice pack and I'm going to see if it helps
I found out within the last year that I have hip misalignment causing more stress on my left leg. My heel and knee pain has always been worse on my left side and I thought it was because I skate
goofy footed. It has gotten to the point thought that the pain is so bad that I don't want to put weight on my left heel and sometimes end up hobbling around walking on the front of my foot to avoid the pain.
I plan on making an apointment this week to see if it is a stress fracture, but even if I don't skate, every night I work I climb up and down ladders and walk a lot. I basically won't be able to do my job if I have to wear a boot. I work retail too so we are about to enter into our busiest time of year with black friday and then Christmas. I want to do something about this but at the same time I want to
ignore it until January when I'll be able to relax a bit more and won't be able to skate as much anyways since there will be snow.
I feel like an old 30 year old, but most people that see me think I'm younger. I wish I didn't just look young but felt it too.
Chiros tell EVERYONE their hips are misaligned 🙄
Whatever the cause my left side has more wear and tear. Probably because I'm goofy footed, too much kicking the ground to speed up and dragging that foot to slow down. Done with chiro though, hoping to get Yoga going again. @@octoberscamp

It’s been 14 months and it’s only gotten worse but I only feel it when I massage it or stretch my calf (toes on/heel hanging off elevated platform)
14 months??? U should see a doctor
14 monther here too.
My GP says it's plantar fasciitis but never did the squeeze test.
I think she's wrong.
Getting a 2nd opinion very soon.
It's painfully doc
Do you know a doctor in Dallas Texas that specializes in bone spurs? I have tried everything and don’t want to do surgery. I heard that can be calcium deposits and that I need to take calcium pills.. Do you think it could be true?
I have calcaneus stress fracture since about 6 months but it isnt healing..now i am sitting home in lockdown giving it full time to heal but still no result.
All i do is normal walking in home..no running or any sports activity but still suffering from Pain.
Do u recommend any treatment shockwave therapy, injection
Than you for your answer
I got this when i landed wrong while playing basketball. Because I play barefooted. From Philippines
I had blunt force trauma to the back of my heel..
I do Gymnastics & upon doing a glide on the Bars...on the swing back the "back of my heel" hit the center cross bar of the bars...stupid me I didn't have a mat underneath ..it was like someone hitting my heel with a crowbar...so Im thinking? this is whats wrong with my heel?..It feels tight like I need to stretch it...and hurts when walking...of course Im also doing rebounding and that may be why its not healing?..
Is there a certain type of boot I should get that would better help to heal a fractured heel?
My foot started hurting several weeks ago, and I've been treating for plantar fasciitis, and it's helped the arch pain, but the back of the heel pain has only gotten worse. Since I can recreate the pain by squeezing in the sides of my heel, I'm fairly certain it's a stress fracture. My doctor is out of town for a couple weeks and his substitute refused to give me a referral for an x-ray and says to continue as I've been doing. I figure that even certified doctors aren't perfect, so I'll just widen my treatment to include a possible fracture on my own.
Sir there is no checking form available
I have it but I’m 13, but I’ve been jump roping a bunch and I started to feel the pain but I just kept doing it
Doc im 40 yr old male living in nola this happened to me 8 days ago jumped from my pick-up truck. And my 1st appointment with orthopedic doc it'll be 3 weeks before someone check s me out is this too long
I had both positive x-ray and MRI test showing 3 fractures
Pain isnt that bad but I've fallen 2 times and may have done worst to it should i see someone else now or wait
I've had several stress fractures in my feet, metatarsal and arch, about 7 of them in 9 months. I don't know how I do it, this a.m. my heel hurts to walk, inside of right foot, pretty sure it's a fracture. I'm not a runner in fact I am disabled and don't do anything like that. Osteopenia in places but foot looks ok. Ideas?
good afternoon Dr. David, I am Michael from the Philippines. I am suffering from a heel bone pain after playing basketball, first week after I played it was painful but as the days gone by it is feeling a little bit better, I returned back to playing basketball but with minimal pain in my heel. This is it!!! This is the problem I have with my foot. The pain is extreme and severe. I am 100% sure it is due to over-standing from working at fast food restaurant. Please what’s the solution. I am currently undergoing shock wave therapy- going to 3rd week and my podiatrist suggest massage gun to get some relief while at home. I have been using customized in-sole since 2019, and I haven’t seen any improvements. Please what’s your advice ?

I was diagnosed with plantar faciatis but I'm beginning to second guess my diagnoses.

I sprain my ankle June 2022. To date, it is STILL swollen. An MRI was done recently which showed a complete fascia rupture at the calcaneous. As I watched your video, it feels more like the calcaneous stress fracture because it DEFINITELY hurts when you squeeze the back of the ankle. Please share your thoughts. Thanks
