    Did RM demo today and rode this for few hours. First 27.5 bike I’ve ridden (29ers last 10 years) with great mix of tech and flowy trails. Was very quick and nimble compared to my sb5.5. Overall really liked this bike. Will make short list for sure, but if yeti really does make a sb130, that would be awesome as well. Thanks for all the reviews and keep them coming.

    Just tested this bike and other Rocky's. Must have been the suspension set up but comparable to my Pivot Mach 5.5 which I think sets the benchmark for this category, the Altitude felt very firm and not what I would expect with this level of travel. Proof that demo days can often not give you a true feel for a bike and you should likely take the time with a shop demo for a full day and have a tech properly set up the suspension. I really want to take this model for a proper test. I will note: Every new Rocky demo bike I tested had squeaks in the upper linkage which at this price level is simply unacceptable.

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  5 лет назад

      Eash, that's no good. My rocky mountain bikes have been absolutely quiet. In my experience, shop demo's are far better than manufacture day demo's. Those bikes get ridden super hard over many miles and it's a lot of work for the demo van/truck driver/mechanic... A shop demo should yield you a better experience. That said, as much as I love the Pivot Mach 5.5, and I have over 200 miles on that bike, I'd still take the Altitude.... it's so much more playful and snappy feeling! Give it another try! Good luck!

    How’s the chain slap on the altitude vs the instinct? Most reviews said instinct was noisy and that would drive me nuts. Are you on the original PF BB or do you use a conversion BB (praxis, wheels mnfct.)
    Please tell me it’s a quiet bike, want this

      Chain slap noise is less than the Instinct although my Instinct was never that bad... I've heard some people had problems with this. I've had no problems with Rocky Mountain press fit bb's and I've got over 2,000 miles on Rocky's in the last 2 years....

    If you want it to be more of an enduro rig then just long shock it like the EWS team did and fit a 170mm fork. Transforms it into a plush (but still progressive due to the suspension design) weapon.

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  6 лет назад

      After 5 months of heavy use my Rocky Mountain Instinct was dead quiet... I'm sure the Altitude will be the same way. I'm only 3 weeks in on it and still quiet! It's not as stiff as the Ibis HD4.... that's all part of the design though... 4 bar link bikes just arn't going to be as stiff as a sold rear triangle bike..,

  • @snoipp1

    Great channel I love watching all of your reviews!! I have a quick question. I know you said you liked the HD4, Mach 6 and this bike for mid travel 27.5's My question is how do you think the Altitude compares to the climbing on the mach 6? I have read some reviews that there is pedal bob on the altitude and that you need to put the bike in trail mode to get rid of it while climbing

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  6 лет назад

      Yes, basically all Horst link bikes will need to be put into the middle or trail mode on the shock so as to climb better. They're just really open and active suspension styles. The DW link on the HD4 and Mach6 have a lot of built in suspension management. Meaning, the climb better when the shock is in the open setting. The Horst link (smooth link) of the Altitude has very little, if any, suspension management built into the suspension so the rear shock stays very active in the open setting. All this said, I feel like the Altitude climbs as well or better than the other two bikes when in the trail setting. I'm very pleased with this bike! One thing to be aware of, the Altitude doesn't feel like it's as big of a bike as the other two... meaning the other two are more composed at higher speeds and through rougher terrain. I find the Altitude to be the better do everything trail bike though. Good luck!

    Hi. Know it's quite a while but got a question to the Altitude as well as Thunderbolt: I went for the thunderbolt C50 and dialed in 30mm rims and 2.6" tyres. Went for the thunderbolt, because our terrain is not that steep. But when I put it in the slack position, I feel a little cramped and the reach too short. The Instinct and Altitude are even shorter in reach. You seem to live RM, but don't you think the reach could be a little longer? half and inch for example? Am 5foot 8 as well

I'm looking for a do it all bike that is fast, flows, handle the zippy trails and corners and still smash through big stuff when needed and climbs relatively well enough to get where I can start to ride down. I don't need to race, I ride for fun. That sweet spot of around 160/150 travel or 140/140. Yours or anyone's thoughts greatly appreciated.

    Hey Jason, love the videos. One of the most solid MTB channels out there, no doubt. Interesting to hear how much you like the altitude. I've been looking at buying a new bike (currently on a Rocky Mountain Thunderbolt base build). Its been a solid bike but I'm getting into more jumps, drops, hard, faster, etc. Was looking at the altitude but when I demoed it I got a bit side tracked and didnt get to give it the best ride but seemed pretty nice... could also probably get last years at a decent price as well. I feel like we have a very similar taste in bikes as I'm looking for a poppy fun do it all bike! I really liked to Pivot mach 5.5 not so much the price lol and havent spent so much time on 29ers. I'm 6ft so not sure on how they would feel (29ers) but the instinct colour looks great. So many bikes and all the demos are pretty much done for the year where I'm at :(.

    Another great video MYY. Looks like a fun bike and a perfect match for you. Might even warrant you getting rid of both the HD4 and 429 now that you found your perfect bike. You seem to be really excited for this one. What tires are you going to go with for this one? 2.3 DHF Fr and 2.3 Aggressor Rear?

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  6 лет назад +1

      DHF 2.3 f and DHR II 2.3 r yeah, excited to put some miles on this one!

    • @ErichVonCartmann
      @ErichVonCartmann 6 лет назад +1

      I too prefer 2.3 Tires for my Long Day Trail Bikes. They grip almost as good as the 2.5s, but they more than make up for make up for it in weight savings and sharpness. I always do Dual Compound in the rear, having the soft 3C Maxterra compound in the rear feels like a boat anchor! I also think the Aggressor rolls a little better than the DHR II, but do prefer the DHR II for all slopes pointed downwards.

    • @ErichVonCartmann
      @ErichVonCartmann 6 лет назад +1

      I also noticed it seems to take you about 50 minutes to make the climb to Jacob's Ladder, but only takes you about 5 minutes going down Jacob's and another 5 going down Ghost?
      This is why smaller tires, other weight savings, and no-bob--good-pedal-bikes are big deals. We want to be fresh and at our best for those 10 minutes!
      Hence the reason we need to set up the bike to make that 50 minute as easy as possible while not sacrificing the performance of those 10 minutes too much.

      Yeah, they're both really good but different... The Trail 429 trail is the better climbing bike and can almost keep pace with the Altitude on the descents... once it starts to get really high speed and rowdy the Altitude is a bit more composed. Both a lot of fun!

    I'm 5 ft 6 and was wondering what you thought about the standover, if you can get all 150mm of travel from the dropper with that seat tube length and what you thought about sizing for someone a couple of inches shorter than you. Med reach looks good small seems way to short. Thanks and congrats on a sweet looking bike!

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  6 лет назад +1

      That is just about the only bad thing I can say about Rocky Mountain bikes... seat tube is still a bit too long... I'm 5'8" and on a size medium the 150mm dropper post is about 1/2 inch from being all the way inserted into the seat tube. My Instinct had lower standover and shorter seat tube...

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  6 лет назад

      Sounds like the thunderbolt might be the direction I'd go given your terrain and rides... might be better for those longer days in the saddle and climb a bit better. Still very composed for just about any trail out there too! Good luck!

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  6 лет назад

      The Altitude is for sure the bike I would pick if I could only own 1 mountain bike at a time. It's for sure the better trail bike, climbs better and can still handle a lot of abuse on the more gnarly trails. That said, if you spend most of your time descending gnarly fast terrain at very high speeds, you would like enjoy the Slayer more... it just need a higher speed to wake up and feel as good as the Altitude.

    • @mtbyumyum

      I owned the Carbon 70 model. The Altitude is a bit quicker in the tight twisty sections of trails. Gets up to speed a little quicker coming out of tight turns or switchbacks and feels just a bit more playful. the Instinct climbs a little better, as stable or even slightly more stable than the Altitude despite the Fox 36 on the Altitude... Instinct holds it's speed better and is probably the better all around bike... would rather be on it on a 3+ hour ride for example...

    • @dergore8954
      @dergore8954 6 лет назад

      Thank you very much! I hope you'd be so kind and also give me some feedback with a comparison between the the RM Instinct and the new Specialized Stumpjumper.
      Which one is better for which type of riding and why?
      I currently own a Trek Fuel EX 9.8 29 and want a new bike but I can only afford one bike for everything. Sadly I have no opportunity to test ride one of these bikes (except the Stumpy/I also bought the FEX blind). The bike must be versatile, climbing is very important to me but it also must be able to jump 3-4ft. drops.
      I'm more the touring guy (1-3h). The terrain here (in Germany Freudenberg) has many hills but no mountains so the downhill part isn't very long. The ground has some roots and chatter but nothing very gnarly or very steep.
      I'm 5' 10" and overweight with 220 pound. Many bike suspensions doesn't work good with my weight. I also wan't a really full lockout for road parts. My technique isn't that good (can't wheelie/manual or bunny hop) so I'm happy if the bike doesn't require an experienced rider.

      I'm in the process of doing this.... I think... the truth is, I really like both bikes and the HD4 feels like a bigger bike... The Altitude feels like the better "trail" bike... the HD4 takes a bit of speed to wake it up... the Altitude is super fun on all the trails I ride most of the time. I'll keep riding them for the next few weeks back-to-back and see if it makes sense to keep the HD4... it will most likely get sold though.

It just doesn't make any sense to have two 150mm rear travel, 27.5 inch tire trail/enduro MTB's. Seems like you have either found your ONE bike ... or your second MTB should be a 29er XC bike. @darrenobrien9727 6 лет назад

      Mike c I think I know what you mean, as I think I've experienced this on an Intense Tracer I demoed. I'm thinking it's to do with the slacker geometry. I only really noticed it on flat roads and paths. When you lean the bike, the steering tends to want to go even further. I didn't really notice it on the trail though - too much other stuff going on maybe! When you rode the Altitude what position was the Ride 9 in? If it was super slack that might have something to do with it.

  • @stolky6295
    @stolky6295 6 лет назад

    Having a hard time deciding between this and the Thunderbolt! The Norcal stuff I ride doesn't seem too different from your area. Plenty of climbing, and combo of flow trails and fairly tech. Plenty of rock gardens, too, but not too much time in the air.

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  6 лет назад +1

      I think a good way to decide what bike you should get should be dependent on the fork.. ask yourself if you really need the extra stability and support of the Fox 36? If that answer is no, get the Thunderbolt. If that answer is filled with hesitation get and more questions... get the Altitude. If you find yourself in situation where the Fox 36 could be the one thing keeping you from crashing then you're riding trails gnarly enough to be on the Altitude. Otherwise, the Thunderbolt will feel more poppy, snappy and playful on your trails. For me, I'd go with the Altitude every time but man, I really loved that Thunderbolt. It's just a matter of the terrain you ride most and how fast you ride it. Good luck!

    • @stolky6295
      @stolky6295 6 лет назад

      Thanks, Jason. That's helpful. The T-bolt is clearly the better choice for about 80% of my riding (climbing, flow trails, smoother downhill stuff) And, the 36 fork isn't really a need...I'm on a Fox 34 now, and it's beefy enough for me, for sure. Only considering the Altitude for the extra travel and longer bike to smooth out the other 20% (rock gardens). Thunderbolt 80% vs Altitude 20%, seems like a no-brainer. I do prefer the quick, efficient bikes...If I were getting a 29er, it would certainly be a Trail 429. Loved that bike when I tried it. Like you, though, I just seem to have more fun on the smaller wheels, even if it's a hair slower.

      ASJ MTB, I think you are spot-on. I demoed the Large Altitude and Mach 5.5 a couple of times and thought them very similar. Like you, I thought the 5.5 felt like a bit of a bigger bike and ended up going with a medium (at 6', 180 lbs) to keep it more nimble and playful. (I rode and would have gone with the large altitude.) The shorter wheelbase on the med 5.5 (compared to the L Altitude) helps a lot with nimbleness, but I didn't feel it detracted from overall downhill performance. The HD4 on the other hand felt much bigger than either of them, and for me, it was a bit too much bike. They are all great bikes though! Bike companies are really making the decisions tough on us!

      Phil Mean yes it’s hard to choose a bike now a days. But thank the lord for MTB festivals. I rode just about every mid travel from every company haha. Took me about 5 months to really figure out what i want to invest In. It had to be something that I can buy in medium size. And I tell u once I hopped on the 5.5 I was sold. At that point I knew pivot was going to be my new go to company because I rode their whole lineup and man I liked all of em. The ideal bikes would be the trail 429 and Mach 5.5 that’s all I need. Trail 429 for long rides and Mach 5.5 for when I travel and for single black ( maybe throw in a double black) bike park stuff. Maybe I’ll buy the 2020 trail 429 🤷🏽‍♂️ when it gets released. But like yum yum would say, “great time to be a mountain biker” I’m having the time of my life on these modern day bikes. I need to hit the lotto so I can buy em all 😂😂🤪🤙🏽

      Large Trail 429 with a fox 36 140 and dpx shock would be so sick!!! Especially given that I weigh 210lbs

    Hi Jason, love your reviews, but it is difficult for me to choose my next bike. I have an old Specialized Epic Comp, 2011, and wish to upgrade to something more permissive, cross countryishh, but wish to have more travel... I’ve stubbled a couple of times in the last couple of years, I actually broke my neck last summer, so I wish to have something that will compensate my lack of talent... :)
    Trails I ride here a not very flowy, not too fast, but can become agressive. So I’m looking for something between 130-150 travel in front. So I’m struggling to position in order the following: Pivot 429, Pivot Switchblade, Rocky mountain altitude, specialized stumpjumper, budget is between 3K-5K$, thanks in advance !
