In all my years I have never seen anyone as good as John Campbell. I wrote his wikipedia stub only because more people need to know about him. I'm delighted and so very grateful for this RUclips posting. A genuinely unique talent who is missed beyond compare. Love from London
Catherine, I hope these videos and the positive comments that are posted give you some comfort. Let his spirit live inside you and when you need it, you will feel him.
When I was about 12 or so, I started taken leason's form Johnny in Shreveport making the drive from Center Texas. Very Very Lucky!!! Rusty ( Crustman ) Watlington.
wow! john reaches way down into his heart and soul on this one, great guitar, brings this song to another level. he plays like a team of wild horses thundering through the night sky with fire below and lightning above!
First time i have seen him on tv...what a amazing moment for me, it changes my life, really.. i miss him so much...one of the mist talented musicans ever..
The storys he had about all the great blues masters he told and then he would just sit there and blow your mind. I managed the only guitar story in 40 miles at 14 years or age. It was own by my old pee wee baseball couch. HWe always had a fea Riff Raff hanging round. we would sit around and play. When slim would come in (very rare) we would talk him in to playing a strat or some electric......WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I feel so sorry for the second guitarist here. He is good, no question about that. But Campbell... playing in his band simply must have been hard. Campbell is simply devastating. Whatever the second gutarist plays, there is always Campbell. He is simply better than anyone else.
nice post...thanks for keeping the john music rolling... I was in NYC recently and saw zonder kennedy playing (you can see him in this vid)...man, he rips!
We shared a bathroom and he fussed with his hair more than I did! He was a gamer. We had an intellivision. Anyone remember that? I would get into trouble because of him! Always playing boxing (which i usually won). Fun times. I sure wish he was here.
I love his Leadbelly story. Fannin Street is very famous in Shreveport. Leadbelly wrote a song about it: ruclips.net/video/8YrDfde089Y/видео.html the monologue that goes with it is a must hear.
I wonder where it is now. I'm hoping that it found a good home. I know that there are several wealthy collectors out there who just display them in their private collections, but a good, old guitar like that really needs to be played by someone who could appreciate it's provenance.
"the drum beat and bass guitar are lame." - lame thinking. They're playing really good. Listen to the fills - its not combined but it feels great to the music.

I saw him with Chris Whitley at a small venue in Houston Texas. Rockefellers back in the 90's, they burned the place down....

Super Blues Legend!!!! LOVE!!!!
So f’ing righteous. I was so lucky to see him live opening for Buddy Guy - absolutely awesome.
We zijn Rob Telgenkamp ,v/d Lantaarn in Hellendoorn nog steeds dankbaar voor dit bijzonder mooi concert.
I believe that had he stayed alive, he may have been as big as SRV. May they both rest in Power.
nei nostri cuori........il blues nella sua vera essenza!!
Grande chitarrista e voce potente! We'll miss you, growling lion of blues!

IMHO, John Campbell was the ultimate Blues machine!
Too bad he's been gone for several years now.
what a shame!
Can't believe he isn't better known. The best who died too young.
Wow! Tasty licks, and a lesson on how to play the slide guitar. Bonus. Thanks for sharing.
I would love to have heard a slide guitar jam summit with Sonny Landreth - both from Louisiana and both master slide players.
First time i have seen him on tv...what a amazing moment for me, it changes my life, really.. i miss him so much...one of the mist talented musicans ever..
This is part of a concert for TV in Germany. Hope, they will release the whole concert someday. They have to do this. What a man !

listen to the end of the video0 nobody can combine Johns fingr work
so true. Are you John's widow? You could write a terrific biography about John.
I wonder if that's the guitar that he got from Lightning Hopkins?
+Roger Steinbrink yes!!! it is,!! Amazing!
I wonder where it is now.
