Dolly, As you can tell by the comments here, your husband was greatly admired and tremendously missed. People that go regularly to the New Orleans Jazzfest still talk about his 1993 shows that he preformed there. There's a great clip of John playing at the Municipal Auditorium. At my 1blastman youtube site, I have a whole playlist of all of John's music that I could fine on youtube. New stuff turns up every now and then. I would be honored if you went to the site and checked it out. I think is was your daughter who also commented in one of the concert videos of John's. I hope she is well also. Houston, Texas late 90's saw a marquee "Buddy Guy w/ John Campbell" I love Buddy, but who's this "Campbell"...bought ticket sat in balcony first row. John Campbell and his trio came out and blew the fucking roof off the theatre!!! The most powerful blues act I've ever seen. Poor Buddy came out and the theatre was destroyed, he never had a chance. Bought John's cassette, couldn't wait to see him again. Read in a guitar magazine: John O.D.'d in hotel room on tour. It broke my heart. What a tragedy, what a loss for the Blue's World. Thank you for the video's, they took me back to one the best performances I've ever seen
I don't think he O.D 'd. He died at his home with his wife and then four month old baby girl in New York. His home then may have been a hotel. He had a heart condition that he didn't know about. - at least this is what I heard. We are all lucky to have all these great live videos of John playing. Check out his 1993 New Orleans Jazzfest set on youtube. It's all as amazing as this. He was becoming a white, electric Robert Johnson. Somewhere in guitar heaven Duane Allman, Lowell George, Leadbelly, Jimi Hendrix, Snooks Eaglin, T-Bone Walker, Stevie Ray Vaughn and a host of other great blues guitarists are jammin' with John. RIP
Hi blastman, I read about it in a Guitar magazine...I was shocked because after seeing him and the impact he had on me I was always scanning for his tour schedule.Then "WHAM" that shocking news. Maybe it was wrong. If so and he was home,(I thought he lived in Texas) what and why did he die? God rest his soul.
yeah, he was in a world of his own, nothing derivative, pure soul and it was dark...walking through the grave yard at night....knifes and rumbling...skulls and bones....man he was really going places very far out and dark and bringing us with him RIP EFOD
I bought John Campbell's One Believer album back in Cardiff Wales back in 1991. Haven't listened to his stuff in the ensuing decades and suddenly out of the blue today I had this hankering to hear the man again. It was a sad day indeed when this hugely talented man was taken so soon from this earth.
One of the greatest blues guitar players of all time. Incredible. But I can´t help feeling sorry for the second guitarist. He IS very good and would shine in any other company than with - Campbell. All respect to all players.

We toured with The Neville Brothers, opening shows in New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Lake Charles, and Lafayette, Louisiana, plus shows at Humphrey’s in San Diego, House of Blues, in Los Angeles, Greek Theater, in Santa Barbara, The Filmore, in San Francisco, and lastly The Reno Hilton (along with Al Green). The Pulsators, are still playing around, but I left some years ago to pursue other musical interest, and stage managed for David Gest Productions in New York, NY managing shows for David, working with legendary artists like Patti Austin, Petula Clark, Deborah Cox, Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis Jr., Roberta Flack, James Ingram, Taj Mahal, Michael McDonald, Stephanie Mills, Stephanie Powers, Paul Shaffer, Phoebe Snow, and Deniece Williams. I’m still happily performing too.
First time I heard John Campbell, he had already been dead for three years. I remember the Howlin' Mercy CD and it made the hair on the back of my neck stand up. So does this video...let's keep his legacy alive!

I saw him in concert and it was transcendent. Small club, front row, and blew the crowd away. I've never seen anything like him before or since.
