NOTE at 16:30:
The "delay in block" rule in railroading is a safety protocol that helps prevent trains from colliding on the same track. Under this rule, trains are required to maintain a safe distance from each other while traveling on the same track.
Here's how it works:
The railroad is divided into sections known as "blocks." Each block is typically defined by signals or other designated points along the track.
When a train enters a block, it will be prevented from proceeding further until the block ahead is clear. This is done through the use of signals or other safety devices.
Trains are required to maintain a safe distance, or "delay," between each other while traveling on the same track. This delay is typically set by the signal system or other safety devices, and it ensures that trains do not enter a block that is already occupied by another train.
If a train is delayed or stopped in a block, it must wait until the block ahead is clear before it can proceed. This helps to prevent collisions and other accidents that could occur if two or more trains were to occupy the same block of track at the same time.
The delay in block rule is typically enforced by signal systems and other safety devices, such as train detection systems and automatic train control systems. In some cases, human operators may also be involved in ensuring that trains are following the rule properly.
By requiring trains to maintain a safe distance from each other while traveling on the same track, the delay in block rule helps to ensure the safety of railroad operations and prevent accidents.
My dad worked for Amtrak and had to retire due to injury. We visited an Amtrak yard in Philly and I got to go into the cab of a P42 that was in for repairs. I think it was 2000
nice
sorry for your dad injury, hope he recovered
I really hope some P42's get saved. It would hurt to have the era of railroading I grew up in be exctinct!
Well, some local commuter railroads still use them, if that’s any consolation.
The real railroad's are long gone.
My father was raised in Ashtabula Ohio. Grandpa was a judge and knew most folks around town. A neighbor was in administration for the New York Central. The first generation diesels had character. Every train had a caboose. Vermin hadn't begun the rampant vandalization of railcars and railroad property. Passenger trains had unique names and interesting histories involving heroes returning from war, actors, athletes, and true dignitaries. I accompanied my dad, grandfather, and our grandparents neighbor Joe,on his rounds several times. Was permitted, with help from the signalman, to pull the big Armstrong levers in the interlocking towers. The fast through trains on the water level route, sometimes with a lash-up of twin engined E units would rattle the windows. The ore and coal trains crossing the diamonds going to and coming from the harbor shook the ground. Dad had worked in the car shops before going off to college. There were two roundhouses right down the street from grandma's and grandpa's. I got to turn Geeps and F units on the wye, and rode locos and cabooses on locals. There were emds, ges, alcos, baldwins, etc.The different prime movers all had unique rumbles. Before they built the overpasses it was a railfans delight and a commuters nightmare. So many grade crossings in town. Then, with the interstate highways the trucks started taking the freight and the branch lines closed and were torn out one by one. Freight and passenger stations closed and were torn down. Commie rail came and went, and amtrak took over the more lucrative routes -- that still don't make any money. Unfortunately, amtrak has been a money pit since it's inception in '71. It should be privatized or shut down. The city petitioned amtrak for a station stop in town. Never happened. Csx wouldnt maintain the once regal station, wouldn't sell it, and it fell into disrepair and was recently demolished. It's all about the almighty buck.
Now all the locos look roughly the same, trains have eot's/fred's, and vandalized railcars spray painted with funk look like they've all left the sewage pits of the big city slums. Locos in the big crime ridden cities all have protective grates and screens over their cab windows and misfortunate freight's boxcars and conex containers are ravaged by vermin in the yards --- often riding the rails with their doors open and cargo pillaged. I remember the early auto racks with no sides, tops, or end doors. The relatively small number of pukes in society who vandalize and steal made it necessary for the shippers and railroad's to spend money and add weight to attempt to prevent losses. What few cabooses that are left, whether for mow or shoving platforms either have steel screened windows or have steel plates welded over them. Don't know what happened to integrity, principals, and respect. Society has changed in many respects, but I can't say that they've been positive overall.
The passenger and priority freight's of years gone by achieved timetable accuracy such that one could set their watch by them. You could tell who was commanding which locomotive by the distinct melodic tones of the whistles and horns.
Speeds achieved on jointed rail exceeded what they can do now on welded rail. amtraks 'in time performance' stats are abysmal. The gooberment keeps breathing down the necks of the class ones, insisting on priority right of way, the class ones want to trim crews and reduce overhead. If they have their way trains will have a one man crew or even run autonomously with the ptc that is now along the routes. They run longer dpu assisted consists that don't fit into the sidings-- basically giving the giooberment the middle finger regarding priority for passengers. Ahh, the magical world of railroa--dung behind the scenes.
And the brains of amtrak, spending money freely that they've never earned, run 5 car consists (passenger or ballast mow) with locos both ON LINE, gulping diesel that we taxpayers are providing.
It's easy to spend other's money.
Anyway -- I enjoy the videos.
We regularly stop by tracks in Ashtabula, Kingsville, Conneaut, by our lake place in Port Clinton, where friends live in Marion, and other favorites when we're out and about -- Bellevue, Greenwich, Willard, Fostoria, Medina, Mansfield, and coldumpus.
Always rather be out in person, but train watching from my recliner with the refrigerator and bathroom close is great for soon to be seniors
i grew up with them
Same here. Via Rail runs them too.
Lot of locos have been extinct. We must just deal with it.
They are railroading hero’s even with them gone they’re major legends in the Amtrak history books.
As a fellow Michigander, i love seeing videos you post from our great state. Keep up the amazing work!
Locomotoras preciosas,,, toda una belleza.!!
I will miss these engines so much
Noo! They will be dearly missed.
May they forever run on the rails in the sky!😢
Wouldn't be surprised if there is a long line of requests from every museum for donating one.
I've been pulled by alittle more than a few p42's in my life. I remember F40's as well.
I adore the Chargers but I grew up with the Genesis so it’ll always have a special place in my heart! Also can’t beat that iconic *whoop*!
whoop of what? i can't think of anything
@@mistzy8435 I'm assuming it's the sound of the air compressor starting.
Adore chargers!!!! you on something bro
@mistzy8435 you can hear it at 7:24
It will hit very differently when all of the Genesis locomotives are retired. I do hope one from each series survives into preservation.
Hopefully Mabye some commuter roads will purchase then and extend their life like the f40s

Really nice video that captures a slice of trains in Michigan over the last decade very well. The midwest has quite a nice variety of interesting trains and old infrastructure. It's sad to see some of the old structures fall, but at least you have documented them very well over the years.
Didn't expect Mike to comment this late at night.
Thanks so much for the kind words, Mike. Most of this footage has been stuck in the vault for years. The original plan was to produce an actual documentary about the Michigan Line. Unfortunately, after moving to Tennessee, I realized that making such a project a reality while living 9.5hrs away was a nearly impossible endeavor. Earlier this year, I decided I would let the footage see the light of day. So much has changed on the Amtrak Michigan Line since then… Including the P42s being phased out, the old signals being replaced, NS dispatchers being replaced with AMTK personnel in Chicago, and the lack of interesting freight trains. That said, I’m glad I was able to document much of those things before it went away.
Thanks so much for watching. It really means a lot to know you enjoy what I do.
-Drayton
I will be sad, if not sad to the point of heartbreak and crying when they make their final run.
The mighty Genesis. A very iconic look and pulled consists reliably over long distances. It would’ve been properly placed on point of any of the great trains of the past. Can you imagine how good it’d have looked in Santa Fe WarBonnet or UP Armour Yellow? Or better yet in the Milw original orange?
Beautifully framed and photographed; calm and informative words. Another great video, as always. Thank you!
Super outstanding! Delay in Block not only provides spectacular videos, but viewers get an awesome history of the railroads, locomotives, and the region as well. Great job!👍👍
I learned about the P42s were always the best diesels engines i seen in my life. Good video Drayton. I started to like ALC-42s more. However the P42s were always my favorite. I’m grateful
Thanks for putting up footage of that P32 in Phase 4 paint, REALLY cool. I actually sat up in my computer chair when that thing come on screen
What a wonderful send off for the P42's unfortunatly in art just as in life...seeing those sends offs were delayed..by slow always delayed NS engines...
I remember seeing these all the time running through Brighton, IL back in the early 2010's after they replaced F40PHs.
I like how you've grown on me, very informative and always well done. DIB rocks!!
All good things must come to an end, they serve Amtrak very well and need the proper way to end it. Sure some will be scarpped but these are just so iconic that some might be used on museums and even on excursions trains as backup generators
I remember when the Genesis engines were new in the early 90s. They were called AMD-103s back then. I remember someone remarking that they looked like the box they came in. Hearing they're being retired makes me feel old.
Man, these were the days. I really, really miss all that old NS power, especially the tophats. I only got into serious railfanning around 2018-2019, which was the time all the good stuff was retired. I wish I had gotten into filming earlier.
I don’t think all of them will go. But some definitely will.
I agree because I hope any of the P42 Diesels will be preserved and perform freight work.
#FreightP42s
I have a hard time believing Amtrak is going to retire their freshly painted 50th anniversary p42s soon
@@Traincraft101 not just a repaint. They also got an overhaul.
Loved this video.
It definitely made me reminisce on times since past.
I remember when those C40-9s were everywhere and I saw a lot of those search light signals in Florida and other unique signals across the east coast. Sadly, most of the equipment I grew up with and that many grew up with before me is gone.
While newer stuff is better, I miss the uniqueness of the way equipment used to be designed for specific roads and not the cookie cutter stuff we see now.
21:41 Nice catch. Seldom seen consecutive engine numbers 518 & 19.
Drayton is Excellent at Making Videos like this one and LET P42s rest in power
Y'know having almost finished ct training I can go into these videos and understand alot more. That being said while Im not gonna be assigned to the divisions you seem to be doing your videos in it's always interesting to watch your videos since you go so in depth into them. Also man those two p32 dash 8s have a nice k5la
Amazing engines, sad to see them go
They. had their time and I'm sure a few will be preserved
As a. retired AMT engineer, good riddance.
I'll miss the P42s
Me too😢😢😢
What I’ve heard is that the Genesis locomotives are going to continue on corridor routes.
Wow to think the P42's were quite new when we visited the USA on holiday from the UK. Farewell to those big GE's.
It will take another year until they were completely withdrawn from service. There is still plenty of time to catch them while you can. I speculate that some of the engines will be preserved since they’re made by General Electric. Any engine that goes into a museum will be easier to get spare parts to keep them running true
They aren't getting rid of the 42s. The chargers aren't coming in fast enough. They are supposedly having a cab overhaul on the 42s.
Loved the narration, clear, concise and D T E, Greetings from New Zealand 🇳🇿 😀
Thank you so much.
That was a really awesome premiere Drayton
Just when I was starting to get used to them they are now going to be retired. Good video
Great video. Very descriptive.
The only time I've been to Michigan was a stop in Grand Rapids. I hope to come back someday.
I can guarantee that at least one P42 will be preserved. They're to historic to go extinct
In today’s world of railroads I’m a big fan of the steam era but I’ve grown fond of some of the diesel used by the railroad companies and the last one I road on was Amtrak and it was the previous models that look like some kind of diesels all over the country to see these ones go out of service that’s not something I ever thought would happen even with the new high-speed electric Amtrak being made.
This is a repeat of an earlier video delay in block posted. Its may have added something new but this is using an earlier video just to get monotized.
ChainsawN&W1218, the Nathan air horns on the GE P42s are synonymous with Railroading, love those Leslie model air horns on the NS EMD GP38-2s and those high hoods!👍🛤

P42s are all I see and hear everyday in my city I think some are being persevered as CTrail bought them from amtrak and had some repaired and painted to be CTrail trains
Your vids are always the best!! Top notch as usual.
Wonder if any p42s will be set aside for preservation ?
I hope any of the P42 Diesels will be preserved and perform freight work.

I hope the

@@DVR01 They look more like freight units anyway
I do hope some get preserved.
Nice drone footage of the freight leaving Jackson at time 37.
42:31 Now that’s power of the mighty clang Dash 9
I've been seeing them between tucson and LA on the sunset limited still. Gotta remember to pose next to one.
I wonder if more P42s won't be converted into NPCUs like the F40s were? An F40 with a baggage door is a common sight in my neighborhood of southern California.
Oh my, the time has come goodbye P42.. You will be missed. 1995-2022.
1993 to 2022 actually
@@lebronechilds3512 Oh, thanks.
Another great video!
I rode on the Empire Builder back in September, I was glad our train was pulled by the 2 P42's instead of the ALC42 Chargers
I won't film the builder unless there's chargers on them, I've seen enough p42s with ugly phase V to last a lifetime.
@@IronHorsefan1869 It was my first time on amtrak, I was glad I got to ride the p42 once, I liked it it was slow and I got to take in all the scenery
@@supericeman1 Ok, I've ridden behind them plenty of times but I'm ready for something new
@@IronHorsefan1869 riding on the empire builder pulled by 2 p42s originally 33 hours but with a 6.5 hour delay from fargo to seattle was sure something, 40mph in montana in the afternoon because of hot tracks 100 degrees and that night 20 mph cuz of a 65mph windstorm we got compensated with free snacks water and a free lunch, beef stew and rice
Wish they would have rebuilt them
14:30 "Letter D indicating Distant Signal"... I thought the Signals with D indicators were "Diverging" signals. No?
Views of Jackson station bring back to mind June 2000 when we rode Amtrak from Jackson to Chicago.I dropped family at the station, returned our auto to our apartment, then went on foot back to the station. A fright train went through town, sounding whistle, as I was on-foot, so I began SPRINTING the rest of the way back to the station. I did not miss our Amtrak.... was not amused with the daylight freight causing me panic! Yes I realized all the way it did not sound like an Amtrak whistle.... however I was not taking any chances!
they are now in the position the f40ph locomotives were in, once the locomotive used on most services , then getting replaced
Mighty impressive drone work there.
The p42s are likely to stick around for a long time until something with a direct release air brake is available. The Siemens units can only operate in graduated release, which makes them illegal to operate on the auto train.
The Grand Elk goes thru my hometown
Anybody else notice the missing 'I' in "Building" on the UP engine at 6:29? I wonder if it was intentionally scraped off by someone, or if it was missed in the paint shop.
I won't get over the day they stop running on the Cresent
Here in Canada we are still using F40PH
When they start rolling out the sc44 and alc42s through norfolk if ever, the p42s are f'd
7:15 Could hear that HEP booting up! Love to see push pull Amtrak operations
That's what that is?
RIP P42 and F40PH
Mechanically, the Genesis is a good engine, but for style, she has a face only her mother could love. "The Chipped Cinderblock" is what I call it.
Is it normal to run two P42s on a Michigan Service train? I thought one of these was an NPCU, but they both look like they are working engines.
Fine photography .
There goes another railroading icon from my youth!!!
There r still p42s running on the sunset limited route so they still remain
Excellent video!!
40:04 that loco has a nice horn, 42:41 my railfan buddy Aaron said he saw this loco or one of these locos at the Altoona works being used as a fuel tester
It’s really a shame that these legendary engines are getting replaced with the hideous(IMO)ALC-42’s but at least I can still get the VIA Rail ones! Also love the Triclops SD60M at the start!
Hey the ALC-42s are much prettier than the P42s
@@IndustrialParrot2816 eh I disagree but it’s fine if you like the ALC-42 but there were/are uglier engines out there.
I thought that most of the P42DC(s) will be soon sold to other commuter railroads after Amtrak completely replaced it with Siemens Charger(s) fleet.
I'm from the F40PH and P30CH era, though I did ride Amtrak as a kid in the 1970's just don't remember much.
As a swiss and a not American train enthusiast, this is MAKING ME CRY!!!!
When I clicked on the video I thought it was a new one until Drayton mentions 2015😮💨
25 years of service
They will all be missed
I did not need to see this 😢 P42’s are my child hood :(
The Siemens Charger is an objectively better locomotive but man, is the Genesis so iconic to Amtrak just like the F40PH that it's going to be a while coping with its departure.
No one at Amtrak will agree with that statement. Ask any engineer about the Chargers. They’ll tell you those units are awful in comparison to the P42s.
The old days when the Wolverine was push pull.
Hate seeing them going to be instinct or scrapped. I hope some get preserved to tourist railroads or railroad museums!
Good video Drayton
The Albion Train depot looks nice.
I've watched this video twice now and seem to be missing where he mentions anywhere in the video about the P42's and why the farewell. Anyone got a timestamp for it?
I was an engineer for 36 years, 24 with AMT, 6 years out of LA. We first got stuck with those miserable "trash 8's", P32's. We engineer thought we were going to get the F59's that was going around demonstrating. But the rubber tire mafia asshole Bud Schuster from PA decreed we will get the more miserable machines, the P42. I went to zone 5 in July 1994 to operate VRE commuter trains in and out of Wash. DC. AMT lost the VRE operating contract in July 2010 and I went back to intercity runs, 86/95 Richmond-DC and back. I cursed every mile I ran that techno-turd. My retirement trip was on the 831Jan.4, 2011. I was about to piss on the on it, but noticed people were watching from the Staples Mill Rd station, so I just spat on it instead. I made my first run as a rookie fireman on a GG1, retired on another GE. Nothing ever beat an EMD in my book.
Why didn't you transfer to n.c dot didn't they have the 59 locomotive?
@@mtanyctrainatlantamartatra7164
We at AMT have national seniority, so I went from zone 12 (LA) to zone 5 (Wash DC) and ran VRE trains with old, but goodies, GP40's and loved it.
VIA Rail (Canada's Amtrak) is also in the process of retiring their P42DCs, Ironically not the F40PHs
Not the f40s?

Nice
I'm definitely not a fan of these particular locos, but I will say this, they had a good run and lasted longer than they should have, I love the Heritage ones most though, I absolutely hate phase V as it's very dull and uninspiring, but all in all they can't be used forever, I love steam engines but I know the chances of them returning are zip zero, same goes for these once they retire, I'm sure a few of these will be preserved, but I never understood the hype about these locos, to me they're just not that exciting to look at, but good video though
