- The Perfect Secret Rally Car Cave - the Group B guy. Welcome to another Car Cave episode, where Jonny Smith visits a 70-something bloke in Gloucestershire who not only owns a handful of incredibly rare Group B rally cars, but competes in them to this day. The owner, Dave Kedward, kindly takes us on a tour of his three sheds/caves, containing rally cars from the 70s, 80s and 90s.

Dave's mate was Gary Midwinter, one hell of a driver in his day. The anniversary of his passing is this week. The two of his cars I remember, P12 FMC & W9 WRC are still going. Great video, Dave Kedward is magnificent.
Gary Midwinter was very fast here in belgium too. Even with the audi he wasnt holding back.
What an outstanding video this is
Please tell me I'm not the only hardened bloke here with a tear in his eye at the words "I wear his driving gloves when I drive this" .... WHAT an episode. WHAT a gentleman!!
Me too 😓
Yeah the gloves got me too but you just would wouldn’t you
Me too
Went to the comments to see if more people picked up on it. Really had to stop myself from balling my eyes out after hearing that. You just got to love to see these kind of things, cars bringing people closer. What a community, what a story and what a good friend this is. I'm sure he'll be as happy as ever up in heaven hearing his old car scream down the courses.
Caught me unawares too, frankly!
"It's not going in a museum, I tell you now". Amen. What a fantastic and knowledgeable gentleman and a brilliant car cave. Great work Jonny. 👍
Hospitality crew/car perverts unite
Holy F…..
Best car cave in ages. This isn’t just someone chucking nouveau riche at a collection for the sake of it; this is a proper passion project.
Thank you, we figured you'd enjoy it. Dave means business (but not in an investment way).
@@TheLateBrakeShow Christ all mighty absolutely epic cars and just hearing all the experience of this man been thru : from the 037 with titanium roll cage and Abarth mechanics see it reunite with the car they might tought it was vanished they fell in knees kissing the car, W.Rohrl mechanic couldn't figure out if that S1 was a replica or real deal, then to M.Mouton came to look at this man 205 t16 say'n that is her old rally car, Ari vatanen dakar 405 if it has that is an absolute beast, all the crazy rare Fords (including the bang Ranger), Lotus Cortina, Vantage.. Woaw ! Jonny, please do not stop this show since you started we enjoy every second from every episode... we tank you ! 💯
I was flashed by an 037 when out in my Mini (1974 1275GT) and nearly broke my neck staring at it when it went by. Spent five minutes driving along in shock at what I'd just seen, and had a little straight-cut gear whine envy (his were louder than mine!) Turns out it was this chap!! Have to admit I started peeling the man onions when he said he wears his friend's gloves when he drives the Audi. I have a similar situation with a few parts on my car, and I always tell my long lost friend I'm taking his bits out for a thrashing - which sounds very very wrong!
What a bloke. This could have been 3 hours long and just as captivating. Bravo.
3hrs? We won't try that, but great to know the half hour episodes fly by.
@@TheLateBrakeShow They really do. Ten minutes on each of these amazing cars would be greatly appreciated. More please.
@@TheLateBrakeShoweasy 3 hours
@The Late Brake Show I would watch hour long plus every time.
@@TheLateBrakeShow I wonder if Dave would take you out on a stage? 😅
This guy is a complete legend!! I worked for Audi a few years ago and met dave by chance in a petrol station he was driving the quattro we got talking. He invited me too sit in it and took me for a spin!!! Best car I've ever been in and what a privilege to have been a passenger in it with such a top driver
So utterly genuine this guy. No insta posing. No B.S. Worked hard, down to earth and sacrificed for his passion. Epic episode 👍🏁🥇
Dave is a complete legend, we should all be Dave.
Still wears his friends racing gloves. Brought a tear to my eye.
How can this legend of a man not be labelled a national treasure...props to dave letting us see a passion that E.Vs can't touch...brilliant content jonny...
I keep saying this, Jonny but each new video you release just knocks it out of the park. As a massive rally fan during the mid 70s to mid 80s, so much nostalgia here for me. I lost interest after Group B. What a lucky chap Dave is, to own and drive these cars. A really great down to earth guy - massive respect
Cheers Rory. Appreciate it.
What a guy and what a collection! Love the 037 😍
PS Roehrl is spelled correctly, an ö often gets replaced with oe when they don't have the correct umlaut available, or in email and URLs
Ahh, thank you for clarifying!
Came here to add precisely that
Walter Röhrl described the 037 as the best rally car he ever drove. It is one of the most beautiful cars ever conceived.
Dave seems like a proper gent - very touching to hear that he still uses his friends driving gloves with the Quattro.
These machines were built to be driven hard, and it's lovely to see someone drive it in the manner Dave does.
Top bloke, “not going in a museum”. So much respect for people like that
Knowing that a safari spec 037 Lancia is overtaking Gladys on the local bus is soothing to the soul.
Straight to the top of Car Cave vids! Dave’s a legend. Softly spoken, no bravado and then multiple legendary cars just tucked away until he thrashes them all over the world! 👌🏻
Just wonderful, how such amazing people reach for you Jonny; to share their stories and to be at such ease with you. You’ve nailed this gig and I relish every single episode. Bravo!
Now this is a true dream garage, any new money celeb dunce can go out and buy soulless boring modern supercars, but this garage belongs to a real enthusiast, this guy knows what's good.
Dave has his heart in the right place, driving and doing rallies with those cars.
I remember seeing these cars in Barbados... what a legend!
💪🏽
Best car cave yet. No bullshit. No vanity. Just a guy who still drives these legendary beasts hard. Just as they should be. Dream cars, Jonny. Dream cars…
Dave is an old rally mate (and arch rival) of mine going back to the 1970s. We had some great battles back then and I even beat him once. Tried to get him to lend me one of these but he always says no!
It’s because of shows like this the BBC tv license is going to collapse. Top work Jonny!!
Not sure that will happen, but thank you so much for your support.
Harry’s new Lotus and historic rally cars with Johnny. Pretty good Sunday I reckon👌
Dave I’d like to say thank you again I was lucky enough to meet Dave at goodwood 2018 and he was kind enough to let me sit in the Quattro what a guy 🙏🏻😁
Proper car cave content fitting TLBS! I love the fact Dave uses and abuses his collection but maintains and holds on to the cars!
Nice one Jonny 👍
Iconic Rally cars from my early teenage years : Lancia 037 , Ford Escort , Audi Quattro , Vauxhall Calibra !!!! Awesome Living garage there 😃
205 T16 still my lottery win car. Even forgot about the 405 Dakar car! Thanks Dave and thanks team. Love it
Same here. Shame we didn’t get to see it. Hopefully there will be a part two.
Ordinary guys, ordinary garage, ordinary talk, very special cars, bril, keep em revin, thanks Gents
very refreshing non pretentious , roll up ya sleeves and super laid back bloke, with the best collection yet. superb.
Jeez Jonny, you do find them!
Dave is a true grass roots enthusiast who happens to have collected some amazing cars.
The ex Brookes Escort and the Quattro are my favourites.
He is the polar opposite of the collectors who have infected our hobby raising values to unattainable levels and then squirreling them away for no one to see or hear.
Thank god there are still a few 'Daves' out there to whom the driving of the car is of greater importance than the crazy values.
You have my undying respect Dave!
Cars get driven. Fun is had. Damage ensues. Damage gets fixed.
This is the correct attitude to old competition cars.
A genuine , proper blokes bloke , loved listening to him . Great work Mr Smith
He smacks of a man who constantly forgets his anniversary but loves his wife with all his heart.
This episode is like two hours too short, what a lad
Sorry!
Love the reg number on the Kenya rally 037……DUS-ST ……how apt 👍🇮🇲
Good God this man is a legend.
Got to be the best yet. What a low-key awesome bloke.
Low key, and the coolest ever OAP
What a guy and what a collection! The sound of that Quattro starting up pure bliss!😍😍
Two words............Gob..........smacked.............awesome episode, I salute Mr Kedward for his spirit and bravado
Stood next to Michelle Moutons Quattro Sport running outside Chester Crown Court at a stage of the RAC rally, I kid you not the whole road was shaking. Amazing group B times. Lovely guy great Video Johnny.
I think the term "What a legend!" has been coined for this exact man. Holy hell, such amazing cars, stories and skill and still such a humble and nice fella.
'i wear his driving gloves when I drive this'. What a lovely gesture.
Just one programme on the Peugeot T16 would be GOLD 😉
We intend to return for the T16...
@@TheLateBrakeShow i hope for another episode with you as a passenger in all of the cars, that would be great.
A remarkable man, and with his earlier career, he can also make sausages out of his enemies.
Very few rally drivers can do that.
Must confess that I'm a bit jealouis that you get to "soar with the Eagles" over there in the U.K. while here in the U.S. we're kinda "grounded with Turkeys". At any rate, your postings are both inspiring and sources of "hope" for us "across the Pond"!!
"I bought them to drive them"...what a philosophy 👍👍
This is absolutely obscene. Holy guacamole, the stories, the cars, the joy. Absolutely unreal.
Man, why am I tearing up again at a video about cars.
True enthusiast , what an amazing man . Keep them going and avoid museums . These cars are meant to be driven amen
Knocked it out the park on this one! What a modest and down to earth owner.
When I looked at that 037 I lost the power of speech you are such a lucky man to see one up close!
Not only that, but Safari spec!
How has this guy not got his own channel, at least!? Oh no, I know: because he's too busy driving the absolute doors off the cars he owns. Good on him. This is how cars should be kept, and how they should be loved. Top marks all round. I keep thinking 'no, this is my favourite Late Brake Show episode', and then this one comes along.
Also, btw, props to Dave for just buying this stuff because he loves it, not because it's an investment or because it's trendy, but because he sees the inherent value in it. That's evidenced by the fact that he hasn't just sold three or four to make a million, when he could have done. This is what it's about, whether they're worth £6k or £600k or costing money every time you start them - I get the feeling Dave wouldn't really care.
WOW! SIMPLY WOW , that's the most amazing collection , that actually gets used in anger , brilliant
I was lucky enough to be part of the media team for the Top Gear event in Barbados, and I have a picture Stig standing next to the Audi. Pretty cool all these years later to learn the history of the car.
You did it again Jonny, great cars great owner. What a collection and what a gent of a man. 😎
Thanks Jonny. Outdone yourself again. Group B were the 'Muscle Cars' of Rally.
Reminds me of some visits I had to dads friends when he was still around, the kind of kit that you don't see so often on posters etc but that is the truly special stuff. Dad was a bit of a special case, he had several cars that were pure rallye cars under, but painted usually grey metallic shell and rims, and most of the stock interior and had tags on them as daily drivers. At one point he was building them mostly himself with friends, so they weren't historic cars, just the race spares bucket contents all put together into a complete car. He didn't want to risk actual historic ones as he drove them as they were meant to, occasionally wrapping one around a tree etc. He'd just rebuild it and keep going. Miss him a lot, he passed in 2000.
I bloody love everything on TLBS... Thanks, Jonny, Brut 33 legend
Cheers Paul 👊🏽
Was waiting him to say the 205 t16 my dream car!! After owed nine road ones back in the day! The back lanes with mates was like a rally at times!!
Proper rally cars you can restore them but their only original once so much history this man is rally
We should all be thankful that blokes like this exist!
So proud of you grandad!
Seeing these Group B rally cars in a used state and knowing they are still being used as intended brought a tear of delight to MY eye I can you. Dave top guy and top show Jonny. 👍🏻
Thank you v much for watching and enjoying.
At the start of November I was in Whitby for most of a weekend away, coming home across the moors I saw a whole load of muddy MK2 Escorts in rally trim, obviously, doing a transition between stages. Made my day seeing them all
It was the Malton Forest Rally, an annual event up here in the North Yorks forests.
it makes me unnecessarily happy to see cars like this, used like they are meant to. i do see the point of a museum piece and can admire them. but there is so much more to admire at full chat going sideways. lovely vid as always Jonny and team
I could have watched hours of this, easily 3-4! The gloves really tugged at the heart strings, what a thoughtful touch.
As a Kenyan, I enjoyed that episode..
👌🏽
Glorious. This man is a straight up gangster.
S1, 205T16, TWO 037's... This is a man with taste.
This is some of the best content on YT. Loved it. Thank you.
Fantastic...just bloody wonderful .
Excellent video thanks. I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Wow what a great collection and what a great guy Dave is, one of the best things I’ve seen on RUclips - amazing!
FANTASTIC what a pleasure, and so nice to see they are used and not just trailer queens. Thanks for sharing this mad collection 2x👍

This has just made my day as a Group B fan. Incredible.
Photographed many of these at Goodwood, what a fabulous collection.
Another fantastic video Jonny.
What a lucky chap Dave is, to own and drive these rally icons.
What a collection of super stars! Well done sir….👍👍
Absolutely jaw dropping, what a collection.
This is remarkable, what a gent, what a collection.
What a great show, what a great car collection and what an amazing man. Thank you for sharing this amazing content. David
Could have easily been 3x longer, what a collection of cars and what a knowledgeable/ every day bloke. Love the fact that he'd get 6 figures for the 037 but would rather kick the arse out it around a dusty road!
Absoltely outstanding collection,MASSIVE RESPECT SIR....
Looking forward to part 2 and 3 … Just pointing out that I could listen and watch this for hours. What a great man, humble, knowledgeable, great heart and fabulous stories.
YT is full of the latest super and hypercars and influencers buying their dream car till they buy something else next month. But this is REAL passion. So much respect.
Outstanding achievements over a lifetime of motorsport passion, amazing car collection. Thank you
What a lovely guy. Thank you for a great video Jonny
What a fantastic man long May he live to enjoy his superb cars.
I take my hat off to you sir
Best episode yet. They stories that go with all those cars is what makes them 👍👍👍👍👍
Wowsers, what a guy, I’d just tear up the road in the S1 just to hear that thing roar, great collection of cars and doing what they were made to do, top man
A pleasure to watch. What a guy, what a collection of cars and what a great way to have them - driven, hard. To everyone involved, you knocked it out of the park (once again Jonny)!
Wonderfull Jonny...!!
The way you bring it..!@
Marvelous....!!
what an incredible person and collection! Great vid!
Dave's a legend and Jonny is a legend too for bringing us such amazing content 👌
What an incredible collection and what an incredibly nice guy Dave is. Thanks Johnny and thanks Dave 🤠👍
OMG...I never cease to be amazed at the types of cars, collections, bikes and barn finds you are given access to...but, just as, if not more important, are the stories that these people share with you that you are able to share with us.
This episode was just off the scale for me. Totally my era of cars. Even sat looking at my RAC photos from '83, '84 and '85.
So grateful to you and the TLBS Team for bringing such quality content time after time after time. Just WOW!!
What a lovely gentleman with an amazing collection! Another brilliant episode
Really great episode, Jonny. Dave has the taste of cars that matter! Thank you.
What an absolutely stellar chap he is! Well done Jonny for doing this video.
