Hunting for R211 subway cars in the wild!

- On a recent vacation, I found myself in New York City with not a whole lot of time to spare, but at the same time, not a whole lot of things that I see with what little free time I had. So, in a desperate effort to capitalize on the success of a previous video, I decided to go looking for the elusive R211’s, in the wild!
There are 3 types of R211 cars that will be produced between the two Kawasaki Factories. The cars you see here are R211 type A’s. The majority of the R211 order are A type cars. There will also be R211’s built called the type S. The cars you see here are not type S cars. Type S cars are called that, because they will be used on the Staten Island railway, and will replace the R44’s. The final type of R211’s produced will be known as type T’s. Again, the cars you see here are Type A’s, not Type T’s. The type T cars, which are not being shown in this video, because they do not yet exist, will feature open gangways and will have no doors separating the cars.
Thanks for watching, and be sure to subscribe for more updates!

The cars will ship to 207 yard, go to Pitkin Yard for set up, and then will be speed tested in the Rockaways or on the Sea Beach line.
Thank you for setting the record straight!
@@TheFourFoot Np. I want them to get here asap. I'm sick of these R46s ;-;
They are killing my triceps.
Lol I’m sure you’re ready for an upgrade!
Cool
And you got a source from where exactly?
3:26 my man really went all the way to Nebraska to find the R211. I had no idea that's where the trains came from, not just Yonkers
Lol, I live here, but that would be intense dedication. Particularly since those 2 five car sets are basically like groundhogs that never want to come outside. Most of the time that I drive by the factory, they’re inside, which is why I thought there was a chance they had already shipped.
I check google maps today in Lincoln Nebraska, last time I may have seen it,I’ll try a street view this time.
When the R160s were first constructed the Bodies were put together in San Paolo, Mexico, then shipped to YONKERS to be completed, it came on the discovery channel....
As someone who films nyc transit thank you for uploading this. Very helpful
Glad I could help!
I'm a NYCT train operator I look forward to operating these👍
Eeee nice!
What line or lines you on?
If they have the same MC handle as the 179s send them chits back. I was gonna pick on the A for next pick but to hell with them 179s!
MC is on the a console similar to the R 142 and it seems to favor LEFT handed operation... yikes...
Good luck partner...
@@Qboro66 I saw that too, they never ask the actual employees about things until it’s too late.
6:44 "I got to see them *before they were shipped out"
Foamers: *Starts looking for boats and flatbed trucks*
Pretty much lol
Nice video bro. You do some great commentary 👌 keep it up.
Thanks a lot!
Awesome documentary of the subway car hunt!
Thanks a lot!
I live in Lincoln near this factory and every once and a while I’ll see them shipping these cars out and I’ll think:
It’s kinda cool that we’re the ones that make these here
But at the same time I’m thinking:
We don’t get to keep any of them to use here in Nebraska :(
Yeah, using M8’s for commuter/intercity service between Omaha and Lincoln is fine by me lol. Apparently Nebraska now has an extra $297m in tax revenue....let’s make it happen lol.
I can’t wait for these to come into service when I go back to live In NJ
Damn thanks for putting the effort in to show us the 211's on camera, I'm hella excited for them to arrive i wonder when too
Thanks a lot! I’m glad you liked it!
The R211 is not in service yet, but it's already looking very old fashioned compared to the other subway trains elsewhere. Even an older subway train in other cities looked much younger than the R211.
The r211s pilot cars are supposed to be delivered this fall,r211t late winter or spring next year and r211a production cars starting delivery.
Awesome!
Wanna thank you for honestly giving the NYCT kid/teen community a chance to see the next gen cars :) 😁. Can’t wait for that test next year!
Thank you! I’m looking forward to all the videos of them testing!
Where are the vestibules, they promised to fit in between the coaches?
They will likely shipped by truck as the last subway cars shipped to any transit property by rail were the WMATA 1k cars back in the 1970s. The WMATA cars were loaded on 85' TOFC cars and required a 400' long simi permanent ramp to load them and unload them. A lowboy truck trailer only requires 60' ramp that is setup and broken down quickly. I may be wrong but I believe the last subway cars shipped to a transit property on their own wheels were the R-33s.
WHY ON EARTH is the mta only ordering some open- gangway doors!? they should be all open gangway!
Yeah hopefully the majority of the future order is open gangway cars!
To test them in the system first they’re most likely going to be open-gangway with the option orders
Annoying music is alot less important than easy access between carriages and more capacity
Yeah that’s kind of the least of people’s worries on a packed train lol
No they don't until they find the way to keep the homeless (who smells) from entering the trains. I am from New York (Born and raised in Brooklyn) so I know.
Can’t wait for them to come!
Thanks, had no idea of that trail there - live in CT now but maybe will go visit.
It was definitely a nice surprise!
Jeremy bait, the video.
Lololololol well put!
The cars are here and will enter Nyct property via South Brooklyn railway. They will be towed to Coney Island Yard on where they will be prepped for testing
Yeah I saw, it’s exciting!
Nice R211 🚂 🚊 🚞 train
Почему маленькие боковые окна? Why small window?
Props to you for venturing that far into Queens - most people wouldn't have even made it to 207th St yard that far uptown. As you alluded to, there are parts of Queens that make you forget that you're in Queens - much less NYC. Next time you're in town, you should take a ride on the LIRR Port Wash line and get off at Little Neck. Head north on foot (towards Little Neck Bay / LI Sound) and check out the neighborhood and the parks. All still within city limits, all still Queens. On your way back to Penn, get off at Bayside and check out the restaurant / bar scene on Bell Blvd - rivals anything in Manhattan. Finally, for railfanning, go to Mets-Willets Pt (also on the Port Wash and the 7 train), where you can watch 1) the 7 train, 2) Corona Yard where the 7 train sleeps, 3) the Port Wash line (obviously), and 4) Flushing Meadows.
Will do! I have been to Mets/willets pt on a previous trip...definitely a transit example all cities should have to try an replicate when building stadium districts! On that previous try I stayed at an apartment in the Bronx and it was really nice to experience a not so touristy part of the city (yes I know that the most cliche description of any Airbnb experience, but I digress). Thanks for the advice!
New Subway cars for NYC
NYCE!!!
I was bracing for some sweet drone footage of the yard, but alas...Sweet catch though. I wonder how many more months of additional testing they'll go through when they arrive on property before we see them on the rails
That’s anyone’s guess lol. I wish I had some drone footage, but as the factory is right next to an airport and I’m sure Jamaica yard is a no go too, since it’s so close to both airports, it wasn’t meant to be...
@@TheFourFoot you dont wanna do drones in NYC unless you want the NYPD to dogpile u. Its illegal unless in certain areas
Yeah that’s what I figured lol
Maybe they will undergo around 5-6 months like the 179 lol
I went to the Yonkers factory and saw this.
They shipped the R211 train there?
Awesome video!
Thanks a lot!
I've been in NYC my whole life and I would like to say that NYC MTA never had open gangways on their city subways, maybe for LIRR but not for the city
Can’t wait for these cars to replace the junks pissing off SIR N Q and W riders. Everyone who says these cars suck (how can they say that when these cars haven’t even entered service yet) will be on their knees thanking the MTA when they start using their WiFi and USB ports. 🤣
Yeah, I don’t have much time for foamers that automatically hate new trains lol
Okay but uh- where's TfL's NTfL? It's been a while since I heard about it.
they have finally arrived worth waiting
They really look nice! I love the colors on the sides and that they are bringing back the color letters and numbers instead of the hard to see red LEDs.
They do look nice!
Well I guess the R32s will be back soon
What do you mean?
Most of the R32S are gone from the system. The only thing they have now on the BMT and the iND lines is the R68S R68AS. On the iRT lines is the R62AS R62S. Start appciating the R62AS R62S on the 1 3 6 S lines because the R262/AS will replace the R62AS R62S on the 1 3 6 S lines for CBTCS. The other hand enjoy the R46S on the N W Q A C lines.
Cool video 😍
The car side windows look too small!
Expect The 1st Set Of Cars To Arrive By The End Of This Month At 207th TAs Really Pushin For That To Happen
It is lol
Is that correct that the r211 will be testing at the end of this month
@Antwan King
@@yoelkranczer580 Yea The 1st Set Should Be On MTA Property At The End Of This Month..They've Been Delayed Because Of The Pandemic
It's awesome that I can visit Kawasaki in Yonkers since I live nearby
For sure!
@@TheFourFoot I thought that the new R211 trains were going to arrive in April or May of this year. I think there was a delay with the delivery because of the COVID19 pandemic.
@@SuperheroJunior The Covid-19 pandemic delayed everything. Manufacturing is considered a non-essential business so factories had to close.
@@TheRailLeaguer I have a question. Have the construction of the R211 with the open gangways started already?? My understanding is that the new R211 in this video are the A types that do not have open gangways.
@@SuperheroJunior That I am not sure of.
Awesome video! I’d love to see these shipped by rail! Hopefully they don’t decide to transport them on trucks though lol.
I hope you do catch, because I’d love to see them on rail cars as well! I’ve never seen the UP servicing that plant...
@@TheFourFoot U.P.? I didn't know if it would be them or BNSF. Now I just need an excuse to drive to Lincoln... LOL!!!
Ha! Yeah that factory is on the UP Lincoln subdivision that connects Valley, NE and Lincoln. BNSF of course could service the plant, but they haven’t, at least a great while lol
Oh god that’s what BART did… shipping individual cars by truck from Plattsburgh, New York to the Bay Area 😬
Yeah I’ve been lucky enough to see a few on the interstate, and all I’ll say is, I’m glad they’re now building them in Pittsburgh, CA lol
I mean I always passes Jamaica yard going to Queens
The windows on thr side are so small :(. Make it so doors open on outside so windows are larger
Yeah that seems to be a popular complaint with these cars lol
Yes! You just need to have plug doors that ride outside the car body instead. For some reason, MTA decided never to use plug doors for any of their fleet.
Even the r160s now has bigger windows
Maintenance, New yorkers like to hold doors. They would burn out the door motors and/or break the door mechanism continuously
It’s because these have less seats : (
Soon sitting will be just for the elderly or disabled the way the seats keep dwindling on newer cars.
Can't wait for them to be in service soon 😀👍
Same!
R262s R211s Lincoln Nebraska Yonkers New York
This is pretty cool ngl cause you have the 211 next to the M8 and screenshots shown cant wait until it comes onto MTA property and see it speed like heck on the Rockaways
Made in America 👍🏼👍🏼🙌🏾
Hej, nice video. Btw. I still think EU design looks more modern. This new trains get me to Poland and old good toilet en57
FRA
Yeah pretty much. America’s policy of “rather than preventing crashes, how about we make the crashes slightly less terrible” is to blame for that. Hopefully now that PTC is basically complete, we can move beyond that.
Take this with about as much salt as Bonneville but supposedly, the first two R211s will be delivered to NYCTA tonight... in a way new passenger carrying cars have not been delivered in some time, via the NYNJ car float and the South Brooklyn Railway.
Long story short, two subway cars being towed down a mile long section of street running track through Brooklyn
Well if that happens, I would love to see some footage if you can swing it lol
@@TheFourFoot Seems I got partly lied to. The cars weren't pulled down the street running section but were trucked to where it ends and off loaded there.
Everyone who has video of the event seems to have decided to do simultaneous premiers on RUclips at 10:30AM EDT, so a little less than two hours from now.
ruclips.net/video/w0AT3HQLg-Y/видео.html
TLDR: the first A and B cars from the first five car set arrivied last night. they will be stored at the offload point at 2nd Avenue and 39th street till the other three cars in the set arrive, at which point they'll be brought into the subway proper via the South Brooklyn Railroad connection to the BMT West End Line.
Nice lol
FOAM! Next to an M8
Yeah, I really couldn’t have asked for a better shot!
@@TheFourFoot The closest they will probably ever be to eachother
I’m sure lol
That’s not foa,
What about at the Younkers plant?
Didn’t have time to make it there, I’d like to in the future, though.
@@TheFourFoot please make a video when they come out in any day in all yards I suggest it's my request
I will
Kawasaki's Yonkers plant is adjacent to the Yonkers Metro North station on the Hudson line.
@@TheFourFoot so will the r211 train model gonna be in NY and Brooklyn at the end of this month is it true
7:06 cool shot with the plane taking off
Keep the same design but make them for Numbered Lines the result is R262. Remember some subway trains have an IRT small size design and larger BMT/IND Loading Gauge size. The following are R27 R30 BMT/IND became IRT R28,36ML R33WF R33ML R36WF & R29s the first one to set this trend was R1-9 R10s BMT/IND which became IRT R12 BMT/IND R16 became the basis for IRT R17 R21 & R22s
R62s R62as. You for got a about the R62/as. The R262s will replace all the R62/as on the 1/3/6/S trains in the future for Cbtcs for the IRT lines for the A devison s.
R12S R14s on the 8 Thrid Avenue Elevated line back in the 70s before they torn down the 8 Thrid Avenue Elevated line down.
PERIODT
I hate the Dubbed doors on R211 the same style since R142 2005 we want to see a different style while looking between trains cars..... like the R143
Why are these trains not connected from the inside end to end like everyone else in the world?
The open gangway trains will be built later.
The side windows are too small. They aren't even as wide as the doors. That makes this train unattractive IMO.
Yeah, that seems to be a pretty common opinion lol
Thats because they made the door area much wider so they had to put smaller windows. Atleast there will be more space
@@morganlimes Well, more space to enter and exit the train. Less seats between the doors. They're designed for dwell times. But the doors aren't offset so, I don't know. The old R32 and R38 had good dwell times because their doors were offset, even though they were fairly narrow.
You can have big windows and wide doors; you just need to have plug doors that ride outside the car body instead. For some reason, MTA decided never to use plug doors for any of their fleet.
Can't wait for these to run for testing!
For sure! I’m sure there’s going to be a ton of great footage from all the foamers up there!
@@TheFourFoot Oh yes, the foamers and even I myself would be screaming!
Hmm
I SO don't care about R-whatevers on the Subway (I try to avoid the subway at all costs), but it is cool to see Metro North cars outside of the factory in Nebraska....

Good to know! It’s gonna be a bit, but I appreciate it!
Shipping a train by truck seems unethical. The open gangway was on the BMT standard. What worries me is how do you get away from a super smelly person?
The open gangway makes it easier to do so in the rare event of a smelly person. You don’t have to wait until the train arrives at the next station. Rather, walk over to the next car while the train is in motion.
@@TheRailLeaguer rare event? You have not been on subway lately.
@@androidtexts6948 I have and it’s a rarity.
The two option orders will most likely be open gangway. A number of those cars may be going to the E, F, and R routes.
@@TheRailLeaguer a rarity? Are you kidding get on an early train with all the people sleeping D 4 the Q I feel for people but it's very sad matter of fact take the D and get off a kingsbridge Rd and use the bottom exit without the stairs you have to step through needles human feces walk around people with needles in there arms smoking crack or just passed out. The city closed one side of the underpass because of this and forced these people to where commuters have to walk through this stuff
@@androidtexts6948 Those early trains are fine. Again, it’s a minor issue. Plus other cities have open gangway trains, so why not NY?
Plus the real way to solve any homeless issues is to build more affordable housing, not rejecting a design that works all over the world.
cool video and i am very happy about the r211 subway cars
Thanks! I’m sure they’ll be an upgrade!
A wild R211 appeared
Why Nebraska? How bout NJ...it's a bit closer?
Because I live in Nebraska lol
@@TheFourFoot ha..no I mean why is the factory in Nebraska if it's servicing the NYC market? Are other products made there as well for western markets?
Nothing has been made (that I know) for the west. The Kawasaki factory in Lincoln primarily makes vehicles like ATV’s and motorcycles. I don’t know much about the history, but it opened in 1976, making it the oldest foreign owned auto manufacturing plant in the US. It likely opened here because of tax incentives (and Nebraska has historically not had a high percentage of unionized labor) but it may have had something to do with the fact that Cushman vehicles were also manufactured here. While I don’t know if management considered this before opening a factory here, the fact is that Cushman was bought and the factory closed, while Kawasaki is still here. The KHI portion of the factory opened in the early 2000’s, so they’ve been making rail cars for less than 2 decades in Lincoln.
@@TheFourFoot I see thanks for the reply....so makes sense that they continue making MTA cars in that facility as the workforce has almost 20 yrs experience doing so. I read somewhere that the NY MTA supports businesses all across the US and now I see exactly how....the supply chain into that Nebraska factory must draw from many states to produce a final product. I'm a frequent rider of those products so it's real interesting to learn about their provenance. I'll bet it's a hoot to watch those NYC subway cars roll by on flatbeds towards their final destination.
For sure. It’s a good example of how public infrastructure spending can have massive benefits outside area where that infrastructure is built. I haven’t seen them on flatcars yet, but I’m looking forward to itn

The Triplex cars had open gangways
Yay
Nice observations 🚂🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃🚃

The Bill and Ted clip made me click subscribe
Thanks! It’s pretty great...
I hope they fail like the R179s. I doubt it coming from Kawasaki but I'd be laughing my ass off if the R46s and R32s had to cover for these.
Edit: I have perhaps now a very well-known personal opinion regarding subway cars. If those whom I wish not to argue with do not like it, they don't have to reply.
That joke of yours is getting too old
Plus why would you want these train cars to fail? 75 of the cars will be equipped with cab signaling for the Staten Island Railway, which desperately needs new cars after other plans floundered.
*The other 440 of them will possibly be assigned to the A route to replace the R46 and equip the A with NTTs for the 8th Avenue CBTC. At this point, the A route will be 100% R211s.
20 train cars will be open gangway trains, which will run all over the system. At that point, the option orders of 640 cars, followed by 437 cars, will be open gangway cars, with most cars being assigned to the N and Q routes.
Thumbs up for your efforts!!
Much appreciated lol
Are these 3rd rail cars?
Yes
Can't wait for these beasts to be unleashed to the public!
Me too. Everyone is really excited for the R211s, especially me, since I use the A route, where a number of the cars could go to. 440 cars for that line = 44 trains = 100% R211s for the A = better A and C service overall.
@@TheRailLeaguer agreed
@Timothy Chan They’re most likely moving to the C line to bump out the 4-car R179 cars to East NY Yard. At some point, with the 8th Avenue CBTC coming in, there will also be another swap with Coney Island, taking all 90 of their R160s in exchange for their R46 cars going to Coney Island Yard. That’s another 90 cars making up an additional 9 10-car trains for Coney Island. All together, that’s 22 10-car trains for the C.
Small windows
Small windows to accommodate doors 8 inches wider than the current models and 13 inches wider than the R27’s-R38’s. This will mean less seats and 3 people can block the doors instead of the usual 2 making for no less time stopped in the stations.
You can have big windows and wide doors; you just need to have plug doors that ride outside the car body instead. For some reason, MTA decided never to use plug doors for any of their fleet.
I can't wait for the R262s so I don't have to hear that annoying loud ass noise t/o's be making when they try to rush conductors to close down!
I have a real spriital feeling that they are definitely gonna make the R262AS I'm telling you with close gangways
