I love the fact that there are only 14 people on the bus!! I agree that the snacks need an upgrade but not mad at seeing the biscoff cookie. Those things are delicious.
Definitely a viable alternative to the train. I was surprised by how luxurious it was, although the only issues with buses is that they are prone to traffic, but I wouldn't mind being stuck in traffic in a seat that comfortable!
Traffic is definitely the only major downside to The Jet. As I mentioned, they bake delays into the schedule, but if there's some particularly bad traffic on one day, then there's only so much they can do.
I guess "viable alternative" is in the eyes of the rider, but this doesn't seem to offer anything better than a train ride. The video mentions Acela fare at $350 but I have never paid anywhere near that much. Regular Northeast Regional trains are an hour shorter than this bus, rarely encounter delays, and provide better amenities in my opinion. The ability to get up and walk around, a cafe car, a quiet car, etc. For short trips like NYC-DC, I don't think Amtrak can be beat. Also Amtrak has started offering discounted fares for trains after 7pm, DC to NYC for like $20. When it comes down to it, this is still a bus.
This looks nice, but I wish first class buses in the US were similar to those in Japan, where they often box off the seats and give everyone essentially a small.private cabin
I feel like this as a double decker bus service would be amazing they could probably afford to be even more competitive with prices and offer more routes.
Someone did a YT review of this when it first started during the height of the pandemic (what rotten luck for the business!). I have to say, I am NOT a fan of riding a bus, but from the start it looked like The Jet had a rock solid service. Timely, VERY nice interiors, and great overall service. Glad to see that their commitment to offering a great product is succeeding. Great video as always!
I drove from central jersey to DC last summer was a pretty quick trip went through Delaware and used interstate 50 skipping Maryland/Baltimore was a nice drive...I would definitely use this bus though looks really nice
Between nyc and dc or NYC to Boston I will frequently use the train but next time I go to DC I will definitely try the bus. Looks very comfy and you can't beat the price! Maybe they will add more routes?
It seems The Jet is straddling the line between Business Class and Economy, which is probably a very successful strategy. I guess the ticket increase for real-ish meals would make the price less attractive? Regardless, I admire how The Jet takes advantage of the strengths of ground transport, on a heavily travelled route. It looks very relaxing and stress free.
Prevost do offer the Allison Transmission as an option too. Although the Ishift does a good job in fuel economy. For a smoother shift, Allison is the best of the best.
Can't wait to sample The Jet on my next trip from DC to New York. I am Amtrak retiree so I can ride the train free, but I want to try something different and perhaps better. Yes, the food offering is lacking but remember you pay more than double this bus fare on Acela First Class and the ride is rough. Thanks for the endorsement.
I highly recommend it. That price difference alone is reason to try it (Although for you it's free 😄), and it's much more comfortable than any of Amtrak's rolling stock.
@@LonestarTrips Passriders can only book Acela Business Class within the hour before departure and we pay $20 flat fee, but my former coworkers in first class will hook me up (off the books, of course ) if I want a meal at my BC seat because that’s how we roll on the railroad all over the world. Regional trains are free but we have to pay to ride some long distance trains depending on whether I travel is on a Red, White or Blue day. Thank you for sharing your trip on this new and beautiful Bus Service!! Wow, the seats look very nice and comfortable. That was cute having a snack Service onboard!!! On board there looked to cute. Very nice!! And to drop you of downtown D.C. looked nice.
At first I thought I had missed the beginning and then I heard the familiar "Hello and Welcome!". Nice way to restructure with an opening teaser intro! I had seen these buses on I95 and wondered what they are like and now I know they are a unique service. Hopefully they will expand to more cities then just NYC to DC.
Sometimes I gotta mix it up with the intro! I think they're looking to expand to more cities, although I'm not entirely sure where. My best guess is NYC-Boston with stops at other major cities along the corridor.
This is ready for location expansion. Chicago to Indianapolis, Portland to Seattle, Los Angeles to San Diego, Houston to San Antonio, Houston to Dallas, etc...........
What a great alternative. I just wish the buses had seat belts. I see this does. The seats are amazing. It seems that the driver's moves also I wonder if the peddles move with him?
I don't think the pedals move with the seat, as the movement would likely be cancelled out in the knee joint. Plus it would mean that if you applied enough pressure, the pedals would move away from you instead of actually applying the gas or brake.
@@timbacchusHere in Houston, it is a bit of a mixed bag. On METRO public transit, I haven’t seen any, but on the newer HISD school buses, there are seatbelts, however, I have not seen anyone use them.
I enjoy seeing when something come to American ad it's an OMG moment. Many of these so-called new invocations/concepts been in other countries over that last 2 decades. Well come to the 21 century, the bus looks amazing btw.
All things considered, it’s probably quicker to get from Midtown to Downtown DC on a bus than going to LGA, clearing TSA, boarding, deboarding, grabbing a cab, and trying to get to downtown DC.
From that neighborhood, Hudson Yards I think EWR is the best choice. Walk over to Penn Station, take NJ Tranist to the airport stop, then Airtrain to terminal
Hi! Real quick add on point to the criticism of a lack of lounge access you made at about 13:50, all US domestic airlines that operate between NY and DC do not include complementary lounge access with a domestic first class ticket. The only US airline that does is Alaska. If you want to use AA’s, United’s, or Delta’s lounges, you have to either pay or have elite status to enter. So in terms of competition, I would only compare the Jet Bus and any potential lounge in the future to Amtrak, assuming both would be complementary (as Amtrak currently is with a first class ticket). If you’re paying for first class, you should have complementary access to all reasonable amenities, and that is one major sticking point I have with US domestic first class. The trips are 5 hours or less, and the airlines don’t treat you well if you are a premium customer anyways, so why even pay for first class domestic flights. Great video though! Hope to see the Jet Bus include some better food alternatives like fresh pastries, which I think would really seal the deal as the best and comfiest travel between DC and NY, especially given the price being half of Acela.
Of all the buses I've taken, The Jet is my favorite. Hell, I daresay it's better than the Amtrak. I love the fact I can get the solo seat on the right and it's the best seat I've ever sat on in any transport. In fact, you sat exactly where I sat last year! I can't say enough good things about the service and the snack selections are more than sufficient. They're all great and I highly recommend The Jet. I just may ride it again this year.
Glad to hear my thoughts about The Jet are echoed in a fellow passenger! For the price, I'll say it's better than Amtrak, but only if time is no object. The service was fantastic, and while yes, the snack service was sufficient, a slightly more substantial option would definitely elevate the experience.
As nice as that bus is, it doesn't compare to the Japanese 1st class busses...they even have enclosed compartments like a 1st class "suite" on an airplane!
Double-decker buses are not a thing in America for some reason unfortunately. Thus there's not enough space for private cabins or all the other amenities on a single-decker bus.
Amtrak is terrible. Riders on the coasts are subsidizing small towns and the Midwest. Criminally expensive for diminishing quality. If you do this every week, current options get tiresome
@@lolaw8295 Totally absurd. The entire national system is a fraction of the cost. The NEC doesn’t make money. But if you want to talk subsidies, look no further than the bloated budget for the socialist highway system and the civil aviation system. Amtrak served small and medium size communities efficiently. The only problem with Amtrak is there isn’t enough of it.
Looked ok.. but as someone from the U.K. I would deffo prefer the train over a bus every single time. Especially as the train is quicker, cheaper and comfier than this.. plus more environmentally friendly as well.
As great as that bus is, it still is slower than the train. Just looking at Amtrak's published times, even the slower Northeast Regionals are about 3 and a half hours, while the bus is over 4 hours (based on your description) and could still be prone to more traffic delays than expected. Acela, while very expensive, has published times of just under 3 hours. Amtrak is known for their own delays, but NEC trains generally do have better on-time performance. I think the Jet could be more convenient if it offered different locations in NYC. Hudson Yards really isn't central in NYC and still close to Penn Station, so getting there could take the same amount of time as getting to Penn Station (if not more). If they had pick-up or drop-off in Lower Manhattan, near Grand Central, somewhere along 5th Avenue, etc., then it could beat out the train in both price and time once you factor in door-to-door times. Metro Center in DC is a good location, but Union Station is only 2 stops away on the Red Line, so the time savings there isn't as great.
I agree that time is the major deciding factor for The Jet. As great as the experience was, allotting four hours to travel is often not an option for most people. Plus with only a few round trips with 14 seats per trip, it's hardly as accessible as Amtrak, especially for those last minute journeys. As for more pickup/drop-off locations, they're currently looking to expand service. Now whether that means more stops around DC/NYC or stops at other cities, I have no idea, but at least they're looking into it. I think the Jet will be a more viable alternative if they operated between Boston and NYC, as the northeast corridor isn't much faster than driving because of the slow curves through Connecticut, so hopefully that's on their radar for future routes.
Metro center is a joke. They should have left out on an orange line train because then you at least have the option to get to the major dc hubs tourist spots.
Train is better even still. The jet isn’t anything different except less people. I would rather take go bus and pay 30 bucks a person one way so it’s h fee 100 bucks for a slightly less comfortable ride while saving money. What they don’t tell you is that metro center isn’t where it’s at for dc. That’s off of red line. You would need to take the red li e to lenfant plaza and get onto orange line for anything tourist for dc. Orange line includes all the Smithsonian’s, the Capitol, White House and gw university. The jet also does not allow pets of any kind. So if you want to take a bus you are left with only Peter Pan.
I feel like they could have included another row of seats, or even two, and brought the ticket price (and carbon footprint) down a bit without affecting the premium feeling of the trip or level of service on board. That is TOO MUCH legroom.
Shame there aren't more routes available. I'd travel more often if such quality was available. As I grow older I like driving less and less. Planes are awful with seating too small and the hassle of TSA. Trains are somewhat better but not as convenient as being picked up on a city street.
If you listen to the first few seconds of the video, you’ll note that I state that “premium passengers” have a few options, which is why I used the Acela first class price.
