I toured with my Identical twin brother for 35 years doing our original Contemporary Christian Music. In 1975 we were in concert with Wanda in West Memphis Arkansas, just across the Mississippi River from Memphis Tennessee. We were part of an Evanglistic crusade. Wanda and her husband Wendel Goodman booked us for serveral weeks in the Oklahoma City area where they lived. At the time I did not know much about Wanda, but she was so kind to my twin and I . - FLOYD
Being a fan of rockabilly I have known her music from Way Way Back, as long as I can remember she has been called (Queen of Rockabilly). That's one hell of a career that she has had, and you are so very correct Fil of all the talent she has worked with over the years, amazing♡
This has to be one of the classic performances of all time. Wanda absolutely tears it up, and it's a fabulous performance from the whole band - cracking guitar solo and the piano player smashes those keys to pieces. I've had to watch this six times in a row because it fills me with such joy.
Wanda Jackson!!!!, a man after me own heart...great to see a person of your age recognizing all of these old great talents...a local band from my home town(that other London in Canada)went to Nashville and did an album with Wanda a few years ago, needles to say they were star strucked
Hi Fil...Once again one from childhood..preteen years! You sure give me so much pleasure! Must share you with my 2 musicial kids...of course they are now 42, and 54, but their love of music endures! I had stacks of 45s playing all day long at my house! Do you ever tour America!?
Whoo hoo! My favorite! I got in so much trouble when I was little teaching this song to my little friends on Sunday afternoon. Mom had to explain to me that not every song that mentions Biblical names is ok on Sundays, pretty much if you can sing Sweet Home Chicago or Traveling Band to the tune, Nana’s gonna be sure I was going to hell. I was sent outside to think up a new gospel song of my own, or an adaptation of one I had heard, to literally sing for my supper! The rest of the week I was the music teacher’s little Wanda, too much fun!
What a great voice! I remember seeing her on TV growing up. Like you said mostly country shows around that time period. Would still Like to see her. What a time capsule she is having been around for the births of rockabilly and rock and roll. It would be a blast to hear stories about the early years with people like Joe Maphis, Roy Clark and Buck Owens not to mention Elvis Presley. Fantastic stuff Fil, great history lesson!
Elvis recorded this composition by Claude Demetrius in January 1958 for the New Orleans-based setting of King Creole and the arrangement and driving force was present in his original, recorded before Wanda’s performance. Elvis also introduced hard-driving and “rockabilly” songs in the same manner,m.
Thanks, Fil. My head's still spinning from all the musical connections. Glad you'd just done the Joe Maphis analysis. When I first spotted the double-becked guitar I thought of Junior Brown! I'll certainly watch again just to remember all the music business history! Thanks, Wanda for trailblazing when I was only 7!
My wife and I walked into the Country Hall of Fame Museum(I think it's called) in Nashville, on my pilgrimage to the South twenty years ago. First thing I saw was a big screen with this girl doing that intro, I'd never seen her on screen before, but I knew what she was gonna do. I said to Jane, "she's gonna tear it up", I don't know how I knew that. But I'd loved her records from way before then. Man she was just the greatest thing.
Phil....you have a wonderful way with you...and I wish you success and happiness in all you do and life..thanks for giving the insights with such enthusiasm and obvious passion...your smile beams from your soul, just like the music you play...I am sure you will become a big trend on u tube, just keep being you and persistence will break down the doors of Jericho... Lots of love and light Peter x
Saw her perform at the Grand Ole Opry 10+ years ago. Couldn't quite understand what made her so special... watching this video made it very clear. Thanks for sharing!
Wanda's been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Had a piece of her 70th birthday cake at the Cadillac Lounge in Toronto and saw her again last year. Obviously she's slowed down a little and had to do part of the show sitting down but the audience was in the palm of her hand - and no word of a lie - she blew everyone away with a crystal clear yodel. One of a kind - a trailblazer.
What a zesty performance. She really knows how to ginger-up a song! What an amazing dynamo of a woman! A beautiful lilting accent too. You made an inspired choice to include her spoken intro Fil. Also, unlike most vocalists her accent is not half-subdued when singing,. As you know, dropping an accent often helps most singing, but wow! it works wonders for her. I marvel at how her performance is simultaneously raw, earthy & raunchy, yet with a graceful, sophisticated elegance. Can't you just feel the joy and energy AND SPIRITUALITY of the whole band? When a band has this much fun on stage, it is simply contagious. This inspired performance by the whole band must surely have had the audience spontaneously dancing like crazy, rising from their seats - and probably dancing on the tables too. An absolutely bloody stupendous piece of musical alchemy!! Good back-story as well. Thanks for this entertaining video, squire.
Thank you. That sound brought back some memories. Very popular in the dance halls when I was young. I also loved the piano playing in that piece. It brought back memories of one of my favourite teachers. One day at school in 1965 our music teacher was late for class and in walked our maths and tech teacher, he was also my rugby coach. He didn't say anything, just walked to the piano, sat down and started playing, and none of us had heard anything like it before. He started off with the Shoeshine Boy, left hand right down one end doing a rolling, tuneful, repeating bass beat, and the right hand at the high end really beating out a fast tune with some runs, he could've probably given Jerry Lee Lewis a run for his money, and then he went straight into the second tune that sounded very similar to this one. By the time he finished we were all out of our chairs standing around the piano, all totally enthralled. None of us knew he could play. We thought what we had just heard was something new. He told us that the music he had just played came from the mid 1920s, from the speakeasys during prohibition. He then broke it down in a similar way that you do and it was probably my most valuable school music lesson. He told us he was a jazz pianist and I've liked jazz and good improvisation music ever since.
Phil (Fil?) just want to say Thank You! You have love and respect for every style (how do I spell genre?) and are a sincere fan. Your youth doesn’t interfere with your attitude. You might say “Rock” but I say God Bless!

But I DO and DID remember hearing her back in the day (from radio) sing Fujiyama Mama and chased that 45 for YEARS. I did finally find it. Elvis sang Hard Headed Woman in King Creole. Dig these early footage of great artist like Wanda Jackson who did pave the way for other artist who came after then. great job on doing Your homework on Wonda. I remember back in the early mid 1980's rockabilly started to make a come back with bands like {Stray Cats} thanks for this great footage Fil.
You absolutely amaze me with the amount of research you do and the knowledge you have on each of your videos. I have heard Wanda Jackson's name before but I had never seen one of her videos, I certainly never knew all of this information about her! And it took a Brit to tell me lol. Great insights! Interesting to know that she recorded the song “Let’s Have a Party” before Elvis did on his 1957 Lp “Loving You” Here she is doing Hard Headed Woman that Elvis had a number one record with from “King Creole” in1958.
Thanks Fil. I am learning not to reject performers that fall out of my current narrow band of interest. I am really starting to appreciate "The Blues" and "older country" style music as the linkage to today is so great. Now I must work on my "jazz appreciation". Currently jazz seems so unorganized while in fact it is anything but.
Fil. I went to Wikipedia (in particular, "guitar tuning") Wikipedia gets a bad rap sometimes but the amount of detailed information published is staggering. That's the very first double neck electric guitar, built by Mosrite guitars, Semie Moseley in 1956.
She was special in rock n roll. Many didn't like her because they didn't think she was lady like.
