    In this video I’ll be sharing with you the best techniques I’ve found for maximizing the tone when you’re practicing through headphones. Often times, the same presets you use for performance will sound brittle, harsh, or fizzy when being played through headphones. Through creative compression, EQ, and amp block techniques, we can tune those existing presets to be more ideal for use with headphones. This is a video I’ve been wanting to make for a while now, and with the current pandemic it seemed more appropriate than ever since a lot of us are home full-time with family.

    Hello everyone! The download for my Line 6 Helix / HX Stomp Complete Preset Library with over 50 presets has now moved to my website. Use this link - bit.ly/3hkkTCh
    As of July 2020, there have been over 300 downloads of my preset library. Many have written back and expressed their satisfaction and it’s my hope that you’ll enjoy these presets too. While I was working on cruise ships, I refined each of these presets over the course of countless rehearsals and performances with a live band, not to mention the hours I spent sitting at the front of house desk in the main theater after-hours. These presets have been meticulously tuned to suit professional use and I believe you’ll find that they’re versatile and incredibly reliable across whatever Helix unit and amplification device you decide to use.
    The Complete Preset Library exists in a Google Drive folder that I am constantly adding new presets to so check back frequently! I appreciate your support and your donation is good for life. I’m looking forward to building this community together and would love to hear from you if you have any questions at all.

    My tip to everyone who practices with headphones: End the chain with a ROOM-reverb, mixed pretty high. It's a night and day difference, gives you the sensation of the amp filling the room, bouncing off walls before hitting your ears. Not for recording, but for getting the feeling of having the amp in the room with you, instead of two small amps strapped to your ears..

    • @Stringprodigy

    • @Blahaba
      @Blahaba 3 года назад +2

      @@Stringprodigy Absolutely - Think of it this way, you usually use reverbs before your physical amps right? The room you're standing in also adds a bit of physical reverb, as I'm guessing you're not putting your ear right next to the speaker cone? This is what we're simulating by putting a room reverb last in chain in a modulator.

    • @Stringprodigy
      @Stringprodigy 3 года назад

      @@Blahaba excellent. so how would you typically set your pre-delay decay, and mix with the room verb? I would have thought something like a hall reverb would be more desirable if you’re going for recorded tones. I like the sound of an amp in the room but I like the sound of an amp in the context of a band mix much better...

    • @Blahaba
      @Blahaba 3 года назад

      @@Stringprodigy I would pretty much set it to try and emulate our rehearsal room. Bring down the high frequencies a lot, back off on decay, predelay between 5-15 ms and mix around 40-44% to get the feel of sitting in a tight room .

    Hi Alex, I just bought a used HX Stomp, this video was super helpful since my practicing will be through headphones the majority of the time. Question, I am getting "digital noise" out of my headphones (ATH M50, 38 ohms impedance), even with the unit unplugged from everything except the headphones and on an empty patch. Sort of a pop or click that happens a 2 or 3 times per second. When the guitar is cranked up it's inaudible, but it bugs me while I'm watching/listening to my guitar lesson through the headphones plugged into the unit. Do you have any suggestions on what I might do to remedy the situation? Thanks!

      Hi Frankie - yes you can use the FX return to connect any external device to in order to play back tracks through the HX Stomp. You’ll need Apple’s annoying lightning to 1/8” adapter and then any cable that can go mono or stereo fan out to 1/4” TS for the aux input.

Beside these any other ones you can recommend? Thank you for posting this. Stay safe out there. Have a good holiday!

    • @AlexPriceMusician
      @AlexPriceMusician  3 года назад +1

      Hi Angel - knowing what I know about Bose, those are consumer-grade headphones. They’re meant for people who want the appearance of high quality audio and are usually pretty inflated in price. What I think that we as guitarists are looking for in headphones, is something that is relatively flat response. The Bose might sound good when listening to music, but chances are the kids are scooped out a bit to give the impression of hi-fidelity to people that don’t know any better.
      The Beyer Dynamic DT990 headphones are another good option that I didn’t mention in this video. They are the open-back version of the DT770s.

  • @FabienneJuliette

    I could also need some advice if anyone can help me with this :D I got the Samson SR 850 for practicing the guitar. They are cheaper ones but reviews say they're great for the prize. They sound fine when I play rather clean sounds, but yesterday I wanted to play something with a lot of gain and overdrive. The amp without headphones made just a little humming noise as usual on that setting but when I plugged in the headphones I just heard a really loud beep. (without touching the guitar)
    My question is if this problem simply relates to the quality of the headphones, or the ohm rating (headphones have 32ohms) or if this is just a general problem when playing with the gain turned up.
    At the moment I'm hesitating to get different ones as I'm not sure what's the problem, but I'm also a bit bummed out not being able to play distorted stuff :/ thanks in advance!

      Hi Juan - some people have said that 250 ohm headphones have worked well for them and some have said they wish they had gotten a power impedance set of headphones. 300 is starting to get high so I would try to go lower if you can. If you don’t might carrying a preamp around, they’re not actually that expensive though. You can get a little tube pre for around $30 I think.

  • @greggmesser8150
    @greggmesser8150 4 года назад

    Alex, Two questions. 1) Are the presets you sell optimized for a live setting or headphones? 2) Would you be willing to share your live setup, i.e. Helix-FRFR? or Helix-board direct?
    The reason I ask is that I just got my Helix a few weeks ago, spent hours working on patches, purchased some presets, IR's, etc, came up with some that sounded pretty good in my headphones (AKG K240's) at home. I got to band rehearsal and, alas, they don't sound good.

    • @AlexPriceMusician
      @AlexPriceMusician  4 года назад +1

      Hi Gregg - All of my presets are tuned for live performance by plugging directly into board and coming through the FOH speakers. This video showcases how I would transform a live preset into a practice patch for use with headphones.
      For 5 months last year and early this year I was working on a cruise ship where I perfected a lot of these patches. I would initially create them with headphones, then I would test them on a standalone JBL FRFR at performance volume, 90-100db and make the needed adjustments. When I was ready, I took the presets to the stage with an 8-piece band that I was working with in the main theater each night. I tuned them each over a course of a couple performances so they'd sound good in a very dense mix. Lastly - towards the end of my contract I had taken my board up to the FOH control and played just by myself through the mains. I made some final and very minor adjustments there.
      I had a lot of free time on the ship and I had a high end theater sound system at my disposal so it was a great opportunity to get to know the Helix software! I went a bit more in depth about the process in this video:
      ruclips.net/video/O9sVbCTvcSI/видео.html
      If you want to make the most out of the Helix amp sims for performance, you should be tuning the settings in direct reference to whatever medium they will be amplified on. I chose to use the mains in the theater I was working in because it was a very high quality and finely tuned system.

    Alex, I have the same Beyerdynamic DT 770 headphones. What ohm rating are you using? They come in 32, 80, and 250 (I have the 80ohm version) but unfortunately I find they are not as nice as a pair of lesser ohm headphones I have from Bang & Olafson. I really want to like and use these BD 770’s more but I am concerned that the HX Stomp headphone output might not be enough to drive them. I have a headphone driver, but I am purposefully not hooking this up yet to see if there might be some setting changes to make them sound better before I go that route.

    • @AlexPriceMusician
      @AlexPriceMusician  4 года назад

      Hi Daniel - I’m using the 80 ohm model. I know that they “technically” should need a preamp but I don’t find that I’m missing much without one.
      I got this set years ago when I was working on a cruise ship. My roommate (trombone player in my band at the time) had gotten a set of these and they sounded great so I decided to buy my own pair as well. He was using a little cheap tube preamp, which I found that improved the sound a bit, but didn’t make a huge difference. I A/B’d the headphones with and without the preamp a couple times and came to the conclusion that I didn’t want to buy one. It wasn’t worth the hassle of having an extra thing to set up when I wanted to practice.

      Rob, I have been doing some testing with my basic lower-ohm headphones, Bang & Olafson and Bose QC15 on the low ohm setting, and my 80ohm 770s. I have found that 770s only sound good when I plug them into my OX Box. I also have a Strymon Iridium that has a headphone jack and it is a little better than the HX stomp headphone sound quality, but still not great. I think I would recommend that unless you have a studio-grade interface, the 32 ohm cans are going to sound better out of the HX Stomp and most other pedal-like gear that has a headphone jack.

      From Line6 Headphone F.A.Q. :
      Q: What is the recommended headphone ohm rating for use with Line 6 products?
      A: For devices with a 1/4" output, we recommend headphones rated between 150-600 ohm (pro or semi-pro level) studio headphones for best results. For those with an 1/8" output, headphones designed for MP3 player usage are usually a good match. Results may vary between headphone models and manufacturers.

    On a computer, try this for your specific model of headphone. www.sonarworks.com
    There's nothing like that for the HX Stomp, but the app will show you graphically how it adjusted the EQ, and maybe you could transfer that manually to the HX Stomp.

      @Ganjang gongjangjang On Windows or MacOS, the software uses data that the company has measured on hundreds of models of headphones to perfectly flatten the frequency response. You can even send in your own headphones and they will measure them for you. The software can do the same for speakers in a room by using a calibrated measurement microphone.
      You can try it out for free on their website if you have one of the headphone models they have measured.

    • @AlexPriceMusician
      @AlexPriceMusician  3 года назад

      I would just say to experiment with it a bit. The comp after the amp block certainly isn’t necessary, but it can help. You might find that’s there’s just too much compression when you start stacking that kind of effect. The compression at the end of the chain is so minimal though.

      I don’t know about the Pod Go, but the Helix has a function in global settings that you can change so that the volume knob only affects the headphone out and the left/right main outputs are always at 100%. A pretty useful feature.

It's already difficult enough to get a decent tone out of headphones so I think a good set is worth the money, sorry.

    • @AlexPriceMusician
      @AlexPriceMusician  2 года назад

      You're plugging your HX Stomp into your amp through the headphone out? The headphone out has a preamp made to drive a hotter signal in order to drive a set of headphones. It's going to be much louder than the stereo outs, which are mic or line level depending on your global settings.

    I felt like the same patches that had so much life and clarity before, sounded completely muffled and in front of my nose on the Dt770s.

    Can you use stomp without a computer? Like guitar > hx stomp > guitar?

    • @AlexPriceMusician
      @AlexPriceMusician  4 года назад

      Yep! The only thing I use the computer for is editing the HX Stomp presets, just because it's easier with the computer software than it is editing the parameters on the actual pedal.
      The HX Stomp is a complete standalone piece of gear that would function just like any other pedal you have. There are so many adjustments you can make to it that Line 6 decided to give you the option to connect it to your computer to edit if you want to.

    The DT-770s are not ideal for creating guitar sounds. The have too much high treble and too much deep bass. With them you will create your sounds too dull and bass light.
    Try instead the DT-250s. They sound nearer on whats coming out of studio monitors or PA systems
