    Some othet terrific films from this great year for cinema are A Time to Love and a Time to Die, Tarnished Angels, Wind Across the Everglades, Bitter Victory, Bonjour Tristesse, Man of the West and Buchanan Rides Alone
    Rock albums are Bo Dddleey, Buddy Holly, Little Richard , all eponymous, One Dozen Berries and Elvis Golden Records Part 1

      You picked a couple fine westerns including another Scott/Boetticher classic. I'm a fan of Nicholas Ray, especially a couple of noirs he directed. I'm not sure that I have seen the Douglas Sirk films. There could possibly be a Bo Diddley sighting coming up. Unfortunately I don't have the Little Richard and Chuck Berry albums although I have most of the songs.

    Little Willie John "I Need Your Love So Bad" .. So so good ! "One For My Baby" is a Top Ten for me from the "Chainmen Of The Board".. Top 5, actually. I remember Mike Hammer reruns when I was a kid. It would be fun to revisit some of those !

      Little Willie John had a tough end to his life but he did some amazing songs. He gets mentioned in a song by Tom Russell called "Blue Wing." I like a lot of Frank's tunes but "One For My Baby" is probably my favorite. Which Hammer did you see, the Stacy Keach or Darren McGavin ones. They both managed to have beautiful actress appear each week.

    Hi Randy. Again, it’s impressive that you have all these TV shows, what a selection! And great that you have the Miles Davis soundtrack to accompany Elevator to the Gallows. Buddy Holly was definitely played a lot in our household when I was young. Great choices

      I do have a soft spot for the 50's television series and I'm afraid I might not have as much to pick from as the years roll by. It was really quite a coup that Malle was able to get Miles Davis for the soundtrack. Buddy Holly was experimenting with using classical musicians and other variations and it is a shame he died so young because he seemed to be a person that would be ahead of the musical curve.

    I love seeing all the late 50s R&B records. Touch of Evil! I need to see that again....the main thing I remember about it is that Orson Welles is a living cartoon character. And young Janet Leigh. Vertigo is one of my all-time favorites, but I have a problem with those eyebrows that Kim Novak has when she goes to dark hair. It just looks clownish to me....I don't understand it. lol Wow, Peter Gunn and 77 Sunset Strip! A couple of hip classics. I can't really think of any top TV shows or records from that year. I did see on a lit of top songs for 1958 that the #47 song is "Oh Julie" by the Crescendoes, written by my neighbor Ken Moffett (he died a few years ag0.) He had a gold record on the wall. You mentioned the top movies, I think, but I will throw in Auntie Mame - I feel sure you've seen it. Great video Randy!

    • @RandyforRoyals
      @RandyforRoyals  Месяц назад +1

      Orson Wells would be almost unrecognizable in that movie if it wasn't for his voice and Janet Leigh looked amazing in that movie. Now you are going to have me looking at Kim Novak's eyebrows the next time I watch Vertigo. Peter Gunn and 77 Sunset Strip were great with cool theme songs. I remember the "Oh Julie" song and that is cool that your neighbor was the songwriter for the tune. Rosilind Russell is great in Auntie Mame and I just rewatched her film His Girl Friday where she held her own with Cary Grant. She was an underrated actress. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    You had many great picks that are also big favorites of mine as well. Frank Sinatra “Sings For Only The Lonely” is a great, great, album - ditto for the song off of it, “One For My Baby”. (Nice Little Willie John album, by the way). Yes! The Impressions/Jerry Butler song, “For Your Precious Love”, is just sublime.. I also love “A Lovers Question”, and “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes” too.
    I’m a big fan of all those crossover country pop, doo wop, rockabilly-ish tunes, that came out in this era, like Don Gibson, “Oh Lonesome Me”, Blue Blue Day”, Johnny Cash “I Guess Things Happen That Way”, “It’s Only Make Believe” Conway Twitty etc, but also some of those schmaltzy pop songs that came out, (It’s All In The Game by Tommy Edwards is a runner up for me..). Definitely some guilty pleasures here, but top five songs of 1958 for me are, “Tequila”, The Champs, “Volare” by Domenico Modugno, “Magic Moments” Perry Como, “Poor Little Fool, Ricky Nelson, and “Ballad Of A Teenage Queen” by Johnny Cash… A movie from 1958 that I’ve always wanted to see, but haven’t yet, is the Paul Newman Joanne Woodward film, “The Long Hot Summer” - too many movies, not enough time.. but my top five 58’ films are: “The Old Man And The Sea”, “The Blob” - which, I first saw in the middle school gym at lunch hour, projected on the concrete block walls.. The Randolph Scott western, “Buchanan Rides Alone”, “The Defiant Ones”, and the Vincent Price horror movie, “The Fly”.
    Take care..

      I'm glad you liked my song and album selections. I do enjoy that Little Willie John. I don't know if you know the singer/songwriter Tom Russell but he does a nice song that mentions Little Willie John's prison time called "Blue Wing." I do like those country crossover songs as well. "Guess Things Happen That Way" is one of my favorite Johnny Cash tunes and Conway Twitty channels his inner Elvis with "It's Only Make Believe." "It's All In the Game" was going to appear in 1951 video until I learned that this early version by Tommy Edwards was not the one I knew. He hit it big in 1958 with a reworked version and that is the one we all know and I forgot. "Tequila" is a good party tune and Ricky Nelson had some great 50's and early 60's hits. I know Dean Martin's version of "Volare" but I'm not sure that I know the Domenico Modugno version. I like your movie choices, especially "Buchanan Rides Again" as I'm a big fan of all the Randolph Scott/Budd Boetticher films. "The Defiant Ones" has some great acting and "The Fly" is a wonderful horror film. I can't remember if I have seen "The Long Hot Summer." If I have it was a long time ago. Thanks for listing some of your favorites.

    It's encouraging to see that you picked Elevator to the Gallows and Horror of Dracula. These films do not seem to get the recognition they deserve over here in the US. Touch of Evil, which I love, seems to have evolved in appreciation over the years. Vertigo appears to be up there with Hitchcock's better-known films, along with North by Northwest and Psycho. Solid film, love Kim Novak, but the least of my favorites of the one's mentioned. I'd have chosen The Defiant Ones or The Young Lions. Great vid. Enjoyed it. Ty.👍

      Thanks. I have loved that Louis Malle film and I am also a big fan of Hammer Horror films. You are right about Touch of Evil as reviews were pretty mixed when it was first released. North By Northwest is actually my favorite of Hitchcock's films. The Defiant Ones and The Young Lions are excellent picks as 1958 had some very good films. Thanks for watching and providing some of your favorites.

    Good Evening Randy - A variety of interesting films this year. My key films also include the ones you have highlighted are as follows. Being a big Hitchcock fan it would be difficult for me not to place at No 1: ‘Vertigo’, with James Stewart and Kim Novak. A very different type of film and not one, like ‘Marnie (1964)’, that I watch a lot, but nevertheless is deserving of its position and all of its accolades. At No 2: J. Lee Thompson’s ‘Ice Cold In Alex’, with John Mills, Anthony Quayle, Sylvia Syms and Harry Andrews. Another excellent film from a well-established Director. Set during the North African Desert Campaign during The War. It concerns a British Ambulance retreating to Alexandria. A classic war film of its time. Well worth a watch. At No 3: ‘Touch Of Evil’, directed by and starring Orson Welles with Charlton Heston, Ray Collins (later as Lt. Tragg in Perry Mason) and Marlene Dietrich. At No 4: Robert Wise’s, ‘I Want To Live’, starring Susan Hayward in an Academy Award winning Best Actress performance playing convicted murderess Barbara Graham. Powerful drama that leaves a lasting impression. My No 5: Louis Malle’s thriller ‘Elevator To The Gallows’. Very interesting plot that holds your interest throughout. I enjoy Louis Malle’s thrillers. I also give reference to four other films from my list from this year: 1. William Wyler’s ‘The Big Country’, with an all-star cast. A classic western that is well worth a watch from the golden era. 2. Stanley Kramer’s ‘The Defiant Ones’, with Tony Curtis and Sidney Poitier. 3. An above average war film starring Clark Gable and Burt Lancaster in Robert Wise’s ‘Run Silent, Run Deep’, and finally, 4. Another one from British Director Terence Fisher’s many films for “Hammer Film Studios’. This one being ‘The Horror Of Dracula’, with Peter Cushing in his definitive portrayal of Professor Van Helsing and with Christopher Lee as Count Dracula. Excellent follow up to the ‘Curse of Frankenstein (1957)’. Have a great week ahead.

      You have a fine list again. I will admit that I am not familiar with "Ice Cold In Alex" although I have seen quite a few of J. Lee Thompson's films including his "Cape Fear" that may be included in a coming year. Susan Hayward was very good in "I Want To Live" and one I considered. I did pick up Robert Wise's "Run Silent, Run Deep" recently. Robert Wise is a director that could make excellent movies in any genre. I'm glad that you are in agreement with three of my top four and the other one made your honorable mentions. "The Defiant Ones" is a brilliantly acted vehicle and "The Big Country" is a wonderful western with a great Burl Ives performance and like you mentioned, an all-star cast. Great list and descriptions.

    I can't argue with your choices in movies for 1958. Touch of Evil, Vertigo and Elevator to the Gallows are all worthy. I admit having a soft spot for Gigi. Leslie Caron was a cutie and Maurice Chevalier was cool. Also, The Fly with Vincent Price would be in the mix. The Defiant Ones with Sidney Poitier and Tony Curtis is a good watch. Bell, Book and Candle is quite enjoyable. My top 5 songs, in no particular order would be For Your Precious Love, Smoke Gets in Your Eyes and A Lover's Question, which you had, plus Johnny B. Goode by Chuck Berry and Since I Don't Have You by The Skyliners. Honorable Mention would be Ricky Nelson's Poor Little Fool.. I remember watching Sea Hunt as a kid. Nice family entertainment.

      I do like the movie Gigi as well and I have the soundtrack. The Defiant Ones has some great acting and Bell, Book and Candle is such a charming movie. Kim Novak had quite the year with Vertigo and Bell, Book and Candle. Johnny B. Goode would have been my next pick and I like the Skyliners' tune as well. Ricky Nelson had some great songs in the late 50's and early 60's. Sea Hunt was a good show and one that I was considering. Thanks for watching and commenting.

    Moanin' is the only Art Blakey I have; picked up the most recent reissue a couple of years back. Not sure if I have ever listened to Little Willie John but I still recall first hearing his name in Robbie Robertson's Somewhere Down The Crazy River. I may have the 45 of Your Precious Love around, that rings a bell. Hammer horror is not a phrase or genre you hear many Americans mention - heavy on that and lots of noir and hard boiled detectives on this list, cheers!

    • @RandyforRoyals
      @RandyforRoyals  Месяц назад +1

      Little Willie John is also mention in a song by Tom Russell called Little Wing. I have a couple Art Blakey albums but will admit that I don't have a huge jazz collection. I became a big fan of Jerry Butler's voice with For Your Precious Love and his recordings with Veejay are stellar. I do like the Hammer horror films but the films I like the best in that genre are more atmospheric in nature. Film noir and mystery/thrillers are probably my favorite genres. Have a great weekend.
