Awesome jazz released that year, and I love John Wayne in that period too. Some Like it Hot, a classic among classics. North By Northwest, absolute masterpiece!

I don't have a lot of jazz but I do think that I have a lot of the important ones. I'm currently rewatching Some Like It Hot. It is hilarious with one of Marilyn's best performances. I think that North By Northwest is a perfect film. Thanks for your comments.

Some great films to end the fifties decade here. I agree with you that three of the best that year were North by Northwest, Some Like it Hot, and Ben-Hur. Compulsion and The 400 Blows would round out my top 5. Another one I'd recommend with be the French film "Pickpocket". As for my favorite songs, not in any order I Only Have Eyes For You - The Flamingos, Shout by the Isley Brothers, Sea of Love - Phil Phillips, A Teenager in Love - Dion & the Belmonts and Mack the Knife by Bobby Darin. Great episode Randy. Onto the 60s...

It's great that we matched on three. I accidentally showed 8 1/2 instead of The 400 Blows as the foreign film that didn't quite make my top picks. 8 1/2 came out in 1963 (woops). I had The 400 Blows written down, but I don't know what happened. I guess all foreign films look alike. It is a great film. I don't think that I have seen Pickpocket. When I think of the Phil Phillips tune, I think of the movie of the same name now and the song is kind of haunting. I love the other songs you picked as well. Thanks for watching.

Good Evening Randy - A very good year for me. My own selections here start with my No 1: Alfred Hitchcock’s ‘North By Northwest’, with Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint and James Mason. The quintessential thriller from the Master. Great film from start to finish. At No 2: William Wyler’s ‘Ben Hur’, with Charlton Heston, Jack Hawkins and Stephen Boyd. A film that is in a class of its own. At No 3: Otto Preminger’s ‘Anatomy of a Murder’, with James Stewart, Lee Remick and Ben Gazzara. This is a First-Class well-scripted Courtroom drama with excellent performances from its leading stars. At No 4: It’s ‘The Last Train From Gun Hill’, from Director John Sturges, starring Kirk Douglas and Anthony Quinn. Classic Western with solid performances from the two lead actors. At No 5: Michael Anderson’s ‘The Wreck of The Mary Deare’, with Charlton Heston and Gary Cooper. Very enjoyable action/adventure film adaptation of the novel by Hammond Innes. I also give mention to four other films, starting with Howard Hawks' ‘Rio Bravo’, with John Wayne, Dean Martin, Ricky Nelson and a memorable performance from Walter Brennan as Stumpy. For me this is a leisurely Western. Next up is ‘Journey to The Centre of The Earth’, with James Mason and Pat Boone, based on the novel by Jules Verne. A very enjoyable adventure film, way better than its remake. I now have a short mystery thriller that I stumbled on by accident a few years back called ‘The Bat’, with Vincent Price and Agnes Moorehead. I found this an interesting thriller, holding my interest throughout, much better than I was expecting. It concerns a killer on the loose in a mansion full of people. The B & W photography adds to the atmosphere. Finally, I have Richard Fleischer’s ‘Compulsion’, with Dean Stockwell and Orson Welles, centering around the real-life 1920’s Leopold-Loeb murder case. On the TV Series, I am also a big fan of 'The Twilight Zone'. Many, many first-class episodes. Have a great week ahead.

It looks like you had three of my four. The Last Train From Gun Hill is a solid western and John Sturges did several really good ones. I think that the only ones that I haven't seen that you mentioned are "The Wrick Of The Mary Deare" and "Compulsion." I did pick up "The Bat" and I do enjoy mysteries, thrillers and horror movies that concentrate on spooky atmosphere. Richard Fleischer has done quite a few movies that I really like and I know one will be making my list in a future year. I'll need to track down "Compulsion." I do love "The Twilight Zone" and Rod Serling's introductions. Thanks for your detailed comments. I always enjoy reading them.

Hi Randy!!! another cool video and killer choices too.... a great year for music, film and tv series. Ben Hur still gets TV re-runs during Eastern, i remember watching Bonanza and the Cartright family adventures...... But yes, Twilight Zone has to be one of the best shows i had ever seeing on tv in the 80's though...... the first one i saw was a complete shock to me!!! but the one i love till this day is a small segement "A Small Talent for War". cheers and be well

Thanks Cristian. The Twilight Zone has quite a few episodes that still have a lingering impression. Ben-Hur doesn't get played like it used to by the networks but I'm sure it still makes an appearance on cable stations. I do remember watching Bonanza episodes as well. Take care.

Another interesting episode, Randy. I only have a CD copy of Kind of Blue too! Believe it or not, I have never seen Ben Hur, but I have seen Some Like it Hot! As the years pass, I recognize more and more of these TV shows and movies, even if I haven't seen them. But, I certainly have watched the Twilight Zone 👍

I guess my vinyl community spot is safe if you only have a CD copy of Kind of Blue also. It seems like Ben-Hur would be like a movie of the week every year and on for two nights as it is a long one. Several of the TV series I discovered by buying the DVD's as the synopsis would sound interesting. I think a few that I showed were never in syndication. The Twilight Zone is a classic.

Twenty years ago I would have been too embarrassed to list some of these as my favorites, but often the “guilty pleasures” win out, and I no longer have any shame.. which, I’m not sure if that’s a good thing!
My favorite songs of 1959 are, “Venus” by Frankie Avalon, “Mr Blue” by The Fleetwoods, “I’m Gonna Get Married” by Lloyd Price, “Long Black Veil” by Lefty Frizzell, and “The Three Bells” by The Browns..
“Anatomy Of A Murder” probably should be in my top five 1959 movies, but I only saw it once, about 25 years ago, and I remember it being really good, but the ones I’m listing have been more apart of my life, which are, “Some Like It Hot”, “Rio Bravo”, “Ben Hur”, “Gidget”, and the Roger Corman film “Bucket Of Blood”.
I had not heard The Sheppards “Island Of Love” before, but I listened to it just now and it’s very much down my alley. I liked it. I’m totally with you in agreeing on Howlin’ Wolf and Bobby Blue Bland as my two favorite Blues artists also.. I have that Oscar Peterson/Louis Armstrong album too, great choice! I don’t know why they changed the album cover of Miles Davis “Kind Of Blue”. I’ve had the original cover for ages on vinyl, but have the new cover on CD - I think the original is a classic and I like it much better. Nice video Randy as always.

I have quite a few guilty pleasures as well, but they don't always quite make my top spots. I have a 12 CD Bear Family box set of Lefty Frizzell and he is a favorite. He has the definitive version of "Long Black Veil." I do have the Lloyd Price and The Browns tunes and do know your other choices. I just rewatched "Anatomy Of A Murder," so it was fresh in my mind. Otto Preminger made some classic films. I wanted to choose "Rio Bravo " as it is a very rewatchable western. I have a lot of Roger Corman movies but I don't think I have or have seen "Bucket Of Blood." I'm glad that you liked "Island Of Love." The Sheppards were quite a discovery for me and I like all of their songs. I'm glad we match on Howlin' Wolf and Bobby Blue Bland. Bland will be making some appearances in upcoming episodes. I know that I should probably get "Kind of Blue" on vinyl someday. I always appreciate your comments. Have a good weekend.

Have not heard of Wade Flemons before, interesting that he had a connection with EW&F. Kansas City is another of those early r&r songs I first encountered through those K-Tel type oldies compilations. Unfamiliar with the Sheppards as well. I might only have Kind Of Blue on CD myself come to think of it. Odd as it was one of the very first jazz albums I ever heard, I borrowed it from the library when I was about 19 or 20. I do have Ben Hur on DVD I believe. I remember that SCTV skit, had no idea it was based on an old TV show - Johnny Staccato the Jazz Detective, that concept makes me laugh for some reason, did he crack his cases in between tickling the keys at the jazz club lol. Another great year, cheers!

Johnny Staccato would often meet potential clients in the jazz club and would often play there. Wade Flemmons only appeared on the first two Earth Wind & Fire albums. I'm not sure what led to his departure. I do love his voice. Kansas City has to be one of the most covered songs. Little Richard added a little bit to it for his version and The Beatles copied that one, but there are so many versions. The Sheppards have some of my favorite doo wop/r&b songs. Both lead singers were great. Take care.

Johnny Staccato! I've never heard of it before but I am 100% in favor of the concept. Twilight Zone would be tough to beat in any year - great choice. I had a quick look at the top songs and movies for 1959 and didn't see any listed that I would take over your picks. Wasn't a great year in those categories, I think....just kind of average.
