In many ways 1966 is my ground-zero year as that's when Revolver came out and that was my first Beatles album. Blonde on Blonde is my favourite Bob. I have a vinyl reissue of that James Carr album, amazing, Star Trek is one of the first TV shows I saw as a kid, during its great syndication run on the UK in the early seventies.
Thanks James. My first Beatles albums were the red and blue ones and it took a while before I picked up a studio album. I have the vinyl reissue of the second James Carr album but I haven't picked up the debut yet. I actually watched a lot more Batman as a kid and became more of a Star Trek fan later although it was just with the original series as I haven't watched all the spinoffs. Take care.
I was born in Brooklyn NY on Saturday afternoon March 19th of 1966@ 3:57pm. I had a crush on Michael Nesmith in the eighties resurgence of The Monkees TV show. Lord Love a Duck was a really wild teen-like film with Tuesday Weld and Roddy McDowall -----my first crush ever.
@@darlenegoodwin Michael Nesmith wrote some great tunes and I remember watching the TV show in the afternoons when I came home from school. I need to revisit Lord Love a Duck. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Another good one, Randy. I know not the same as it would have been in the 60s but I got to see Brian Wilson with the Wondermints performing in London back when Pet Sounds was reissued and Mojo magazine had voted God only knows as the greatest song of all time. It was pretty special as it was the start of him performing and touring again…..Nice to see The Glass Bottom Boat get a mention, a fun one despite the boat only being in the movie for a few seconds and Day only being in a mermaid costume for the opening scene!
It's great that you were able to see Brian Wilson even if it was not from his heyday. God Only Knows is an all-time favorite of many including a friend of mine. While not quite as entertaining as the films she did with Rock Hudson, I did like the ones she did with Rod Taylor. Thanks for watching and commenting.
So many good things! Both music and tv and movies. Star Trek for sure. And yes Good Bad and the Ugly. Pet sounds revolver and blonde on blonde that’s a hell of a year! I will be showing that monkees album in my video too
I guess it might have been false advertising when I had The Monkees album in my thumbnail but it was under consideration. I look forward to seeing it's importance in this week's history.
Good Evening Randy. A very good year for films. My No 1 is also 'The Good, The Bad & The Ugly' (Dir: Sergio Leone, with Clint Eastwood, Eli Wallach & Lee Van Cleef). My favourite film of the ‘dollars’ trilogy. At No 2: 'The Chase' (Dir: Arthur Penn - with Marlon Brando, Jane Fonda, Robert Redford & E. G. Marshall). At No 3: ‘Second Wind’ aka ‘Le Deuxieme Souffle’ (Dir: Jean-Pierre Melville, with Paul Meurisse). A good solid well-scripted gangster film that holds your interest throughout. One of this film Director’s best films. At No 4: ‘A Man For All Seasons’ (Dir: Fred Zinnemann, with an all star cast). British Historical drama set during the reign of Henry VIII. Thanks Randy for refreshing my memory. I had completely forgotten about this film on Brian’s channel and also had not seen it for decades. Well recognized at the Academy Awards. At No 5: 'The Sand Pebbles' (Dir: Robert Wise, with Steve McQueen & Richard Attenborough). Good adventure film. My No 6 is ‘The Professionals’, with Burt Lancaster, Robert Ryan & Lee Marvin. At No 7: 'Django' (Dir: Sergio Corbucci, with Franc Nero) - pushed the boundaries for violence in its day giving yet another headache for the UK Film Censors. At No 8: 'Khartoum' (Dir: Basil Dearden, with Charlton Heston & Laurence Olivier). Another British Historical Drama set in the Sudan in the 1880's. Being a fan of espionage thrillers I also include at No 9: 'Funeral In Berlin' (Dir: Guy Hamilton, of James Bond fame, with Michael Caine & Oscar Homolka) - have always felt this was a good solid follow up to 'The Ipcress File' and in some ways, more enjoyable. Finally at No 10: ‘The Quiller Memorandum’ (Dir: Michael Anderson, with George Segal and Alec Guinness. I also did enjoy Richard Fleischer’s ‘Fantastic Voyage’. Not seen it for a very longtime but its special effects were very good for its time and I have fond memories of this film. On the TV Series, ’Star Trek’ is one of my favourite science fiction series of all time. Fond memories as a child of 'Batman' and also Irwin Allen’s ‘The Time Tunnel’. Sad it only lasted one season as I feel the concept had a lot of potential. Did re-watch this series earlier this year and still enjoyed it. Have a great week ahead.
It's good to see that we agreed on a couple in the top five. I have the Criterion of "Le Deuxieme Souffle" and I can't believe I missed it. Jean-Pierre Melville is one of my favorite directors. It would probably be in the top five. It has been a while since I have seen "Funeral In Berlin" but it sounds like I need to reacquaint myself as I do like "The Ipcress File." I enjoyed "The Quiller Memorandum" and it is a film that I rewatched recently. I'm not sure if I have seen "Khartoum," but I did pick up the Basil Dearden film "The Blue Lamp" from Kino Lorber recently. I need to see "Django" as well. It looks like we had similar thoughts on 1966 in television and it is a shame that "The Time Tunnel" was only given one season. Thanks for watching and providing your choices.
hi randy thanks again for reminding me how old i am - your no 1 movie just beaten out by bergman's persona and burton and taylor's marriage who's afraid of virginia wolf - - my top 3 albums revolver, aftermath and john mayall.s bluesbreakers my songs tell it like it is aaron necville, four tops reach out and i'll be there and my no 1 god only knows - i jotted down 3 of your movies but really pleased you mentioned seconds a movie that not many people saw
Great acting by Burton and Taylor in Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf. Aftermath is one that I should have shown and was under consideration. Aaron Neville has an amazing voice and that is a great song. Levi Stubbs has an incredible voice as well. I'm glad you are a fan of Seconds too.
Tough year, but I am sure I would pick Blonde on Blonde for fav album and one of the tracks from that record for best song. You picked some great movies, and #1 is fabulous. As for TV shows, that's dead easy: Star Trek! We agree. I loved Batman, too! I even watched That Girl with my parents.
I'm glad that we agree on my film and TV show selections. I did have "Visions of Johanna" from Blonde On Blonde in my top five when I ranked the songs from 1966 on Rich's channel but I decided to give some love to a couple of other songs this time.
Hi Randy!!! I must confess i have never been a Star Trek big fan, maybe because it was before my time, but can't deny the huge impact it had in popular culture, same thing with the "original" Batman series which if you see them in perspective it was kind of a "kids/teenager" show, anyhow still a fun one to watch. I think your favorite song is awesome and chosing Beach Boys over the Beatles!!! that's something..... cheers and be well
I haven't really kept up with the movies or the subsequent series but I did watch the original show. Batman was a campy series and one that I remember as a kid but now I like seeing some of the character actors that played villains. Not every year, but this year I would choose The Beach Boys. Thanks for watching.
Here are my favorites, before I watched the video. Still so much great music this year. Album- 1. Parsley Sage Rosemary And Thyme- Simon and Garfunkel 2. Revolver-The Beatles Song- 1. Secret Agent Man- Johnny Rivers 2. Here There And Everywhere-The Beatles 3. Monday Monday-The Mamas And Papas 4. Soul And Inspiration- The Righteous Brothers. Movie- Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf TV show- Family Affair- an underrated show, it was a sitcom but had drama elements too, and it didn't always have a happy ending, like they did on one show where guest Eve Plumb (later Jan on the Brady Bunch) played a little girl with a terminal illness.
We did have a couple of matches. I somehow missed "(You're My) Soul And Inspiration" as it is a fantastic Righteous Brothers song. I like your other song choices as well. Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor put on an acting clinic in your movie choice. I know the Family Affair series but it was not one that I watched. I appreciate seeing your choices.
Good pick that Buffalo Springfield My favorite album.1966....Rolling Stones/Aftermath Film..The Fortune Cookie/Jack Lemmon /Walter Matthau Song.."Time" by CHER..from album. "the Sonny Side of Cher".. song was a chart topping Hit by The Pozo- Seco singers/ TV shows runnerups..Family Affair..Batman..Favorite.. The Monroes( I had a crush on Barbara Hershey) Favorite in short film category..Daffy Duck
I should have mentioned Aftermath as it was under strong consideration and I did enjoy The Fortune Cookie. I don't think I know that Sonny & Cher song, I will have to give it a listen. I have seen a few episodes of Family Affair but I don't think I have ever watched The Monroes although I do remember Barbara Hershey well from the movie Boxcar Bertha. I enjoyed seeing your picks.
Great picks. My favorite album is Revolver. A close second would be Pet Sounds. My favorite song is God Only Knows. I also love Eleanor Rigby and For What it’s Worth. My favorite movie is The Russians are Coming the Russians are coming. I agree the original Star Trek would have to be my favorite tv show.
I do enjoy Revolver but of course you know my love of Dylan and Pet Sounds is my favorite Beach Boys album. If it wasn't for my favorite Who song, "God Only Knows" would be number one. Your movie selection does have a wonderful performance by Alan Arkin and glad we could agree on the TV show. Thanks for posting your choices.
I have the Monkees LP (not that easy to find in good condition, in my experience at least) and the Yardbirds as Roger The Engineer. I was just watching Michael Caine in Zulu, which I guess is from 1964, never saw that before. I remember Fantastic Voyage being on TV as a kid, it kind of creeped me out as I recall. I am in the midst of watching Family Affair right now which also started in 1966, always had a soft spot for that show from discovering it somehow many years ago and I see That Girl is on the streaming platform as well, might have to check that out next. Cheers!
I got the Monkees LP at an auction with a bunch of other LP's which were mostly of the Easy Listening variety and the Yardbirds one is a repress. It's been years since I have seen Zulu but it is a film that I would like to revisit. I could see where Fantastic Voyage could have that affect but I remember watching it because of Raquel Welch. I never really watched Family Affair although I was aware of it. I remember watching that girl on reruns late at night and I always liked the beginning segment. Take care.
I'm quite impressed with your albums from The Yardbirds. All I can ever seem to find are bad copies of hits collections. Dylan's Blonde on Blonde has to be my favorite album by him. Hopefully I haven't already said that about any of his other albums LOL. It's always tough for me to pick a favorite, but that would be one of them. Good choice from Buffalo Springfield too. So many movies that you show from this decade that I have never heard of. I guess I need to do some movie watching from the '60s. I've been trying to make my way through watching all of the Best Picture winners from the Oscars starting with the first year to current and I just watched "Going My Way" from 1944, so I still have a ways to go. Completely agree with your #1 movie pick, at least as far as the ones I've seen. That Girl brings back a lot of memories as that was one series I always seemed to watch, probably mostly re-runs that came on after school each day. But it brings back thoughts of a much simpler time.
The Yardbirds album I showed was actually a repress as I have never seen when out looking, even at record stores. Blonde on Blonde is probably my third favorite Dylan album but that still places in very high in my all-time albums list. Quite a few of the sixties movies are ones that I just revisited and I now have a new appreciation. I admire your quest to watch all the Best Picture winners. I know that the last ten years are the ones I know the least about. I remember watching That Girl reruns late at night when I was going to college, but I do remember seeing Batman when I got home from school. It does bring back good memories.
I loved “The Time Tunnel” as kid. Friday night was big TV night for us. There was a weekly show about the Green Bay Packers, hosted by Jerry Kramer, called “Packerama” at 6:30, then “The Time Tunnel”, and after that “Star Trek”… All of the kids I knew at the time thought that “Secret Agent Man” was the coolest song.. 1966 had tons of great songs, my favorites are, “The Summer Wind” by Frank Sinatra, “Paint It Black” by The Rolling Stones, “I Fought The Law” by The Bobby Fuller Four, “It’s A Man’s, Man’s World” by James Brown, and “See You In September” by The Happenings (kind of a guilty pleasure - all of your song picks could have been on my list.. My favorite albums of 1966 are “Pet Sounds” by The Beach Boys, “Yesterday And Today” by The Beatles, “Sounds Of Silence” by Simon And Garfunkel, “Strangers In The Night” by Frank Sinatra, and “The Monkees” debut record.. Favorite films for me are, the surfing documentary, “The Endless Summer”, “Blow Up”, “Georgy Girl”, “A Man For All Seasons”, and “The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly”… You didn’t mention my all time favorite “Batman” villain, Julie Newmar as Catwoman! 🙂 Nice video Randy, take care..
I remember watching reruns of Batman in the afternoons after I came home from school and didn't actually see The Time Tunnel and Star Trek until sometime later. I should have mentioned Julie Newmar as she was a favorite in that cat suit. I was a Packer fan as a youngster as they were my second favorite team after the Chiefs with Bart Starr and Caroll Dale being favorites. I don't think that I have seen that surfing documentary. When I was considering my songs, "I Fought The Law" was my last cut. "Paint It Black" was under consideration as well. I tend to like Sinatra's 50's recordings the most but I would say "The Summer Wind" would be my favorite song of his from this year. Simon & Garfunkel's album is one I should have shown as being under consideration. Not sure how I missed it. Thanks for watching.
Another memorable year. We share some favorites in each category, but I'll give you a rundown of mine. ALBUMS -1. Blonde On Blonde (Bob Dylan) 2- Revolver (The Beatles) 3- Pet Sounds (Beach Boys) 4- Aftermath (Rolling Stones) 5- The Monkees debut album SONGS - 1. God Only Knows (Beach Boys) 2- Visions of Johanna (Bob Dylan) 3- Eleanor Rigby (Beatles) 4- I Am a Rock (Simon and Garfunkel) 5- Paint It Black - (Rolling Stones) MOVIES - 1- Blow-Up 2- King of Hearts 3- The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly 4- A Man for All Seasons 5- The Sand Pebbles TV - 1- Dark Shadows (daytime gothic soap) 2- Batman 3- The Time Tunnel 4- Mission:Impossible 5- The Monkees
I have The Rolling Stones mono box set and forgot to show Aftermath as it was an album under consideration. I did change my song picks somewhat from my choices on your channel as I had "For What It's Worth" in 1966 and moved "Secret Agent Man" up. I guess that I felt Blonde On Blonde was already represented in the albums but I couldn't leave out "God Only Knows." I don't think that I have ever seen King of Hearts. I wish that I had some DVD's of Dark Shadows as I remember seeing it in the afternoons as a kid and Barnabas Collins made an impression. Thanks for providing your selections.
No Stones “Aftermath “? Nice you included Roger the Engineer. You can’t mention Fantastic Voyage without Raquel Welch can you 😁. The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly is a great choice. Stephanie Powers was the Girl From Uncle? I never knew that. Ahhh The Green Hornet. Gotta put The Batman in there. Although eventually the tv show almost killed the character in comic books due to the campiness of the show. Artist/Writer Neal Adams is credited for bringing the character back from the (almost) dead and making the book one that comic book readers found cool again, by giving the character a more gritty, mysterious nuance. Also gave him a better look too. Concentrating on Batman’s detective skills more than gadgets. Star Trek was a favorite after school syndication show for me as a kid. I can still enjoy it. Another nice addition Randy. (By the way, I got to meet Neal Adams before he passed away)
I have The Stones mono box and should have at least pulled out Aftermath as one under consideration, because it was. There will be some Stones coming in the future. Raquel was probably the best special effect with Fantastic Voyage. The Girl From UNCLE only lasted one year unfortunately. I did not know that the TV show was that detrimental to the comic book character. I liked the TV show because of the character actors that played villains and Julie Newmar and Yvonne Craig. That's cool that you got to met Neal Adams and it sounds like he paved the way for the more serious and mysterious Batman of the movies. Thanks for watching.
I may disagree with your build up albums , i wholeheartedly agree with the top album Best song yeah God only Knows and Summer in the City , The Fortune Cookie Tie to Batman and Family Affair
Pet Sounds is indeed a classic and God Only Knows is an amazing song. Summer In The City is a great tune and one that I got to know through a 4 record K-tel like 60's set that was one of the first vinyl records I owned. The Fortune Cookie is very good and Batman was one of my favorites as I remember coming home from school and watching it.

@ Julie Newmar and Yvonne Craig were awesome.
I may disagree with your build up albums , i wholeheartedly agree with the top album
Best song yeah God only Knows and Summer in the City , The Fortune Cookie
Tie to Batman and Family Affair
Pet Sounds is indeed a classic and God Only Knows is an amazing song. Summer In The City is a great tune and one that I got to know through a 4 record K-tel like 60's set that was one of the first vinyl records I owned. The Fortune Cookie is very good and Batman was one of my favorites as I remember coming home from school and watching it.
