the "pick-ups" are those things between the body & the strings of an electric guitar or bass. oval shaped, size of a thumb, usually with three silver dots. they "pick up" magnetic resonance from the strings & transfer them to the amplifier. the thin vertical protrusions along the neck of the guitar or bass are the "frets", basically little stop signs for the fingers on your non-strumming hand. many jazz bassists play fretless basses, either upright or electric, which completely blows my mind. isn't real music a trip? can't live without it.

Commercial success typically means 'radio success'. Radio success typically means that the music created by the artist has been produced under structure, or formula, that is used to create that 'radio sound'. This leads people to typically say that an artist has 'sold out'.... meaning that their earlier music seemed to be more reflective of who they are as an artist, while their later material, produced by the large record companies for the radio, tends to stick to a certain formula that many commercial songs use.
Rage has done their own thing since they came out, and while there is nothing wrong with a band evolving their sound to be more commercial, I really do appreciate when a band sticks to their guns and refuses to alter their vision for radio airplay standards.

The scratch effect is an interesting one. There's a toggle on the guitar to switch between different pickups and on certain guitars you can control the volume of each pickup so if you have one turned all the way down, you can basically use the toggle as a kill switch the same way that you'd use a crossfader with a really sharp transition on a mixer for scratching.
