- Our engine for the AWD Model A is almost there! In this episode we will start with our prepped shortblock from JBA Speed Shop and top it with Trick Flow's Heads, Cams, and Intake Manifold for the Ford 4.6/5.4 2V. Fastening the engine together we have Stage 8 Locking Fasteners. Components from Tuff Stuff Performance Accessories are used on the engine as well. At the end we take a look at the custom CNC machined intake adapters we are engineering and the new CNC machine coming to our studio from @carbide3d

Extremely well done instruction with quality parts. Good to see 2v tech ❤
This was an incredible video, I was surprised to see a 2v build since I haven’t found much info on those engines, would love to see the rest of the build and followed for more incredibly detailed and well shot videos
Agree, I bought a book/magazine on rebuilding/over-hauling 4.6 & 5.4 it basically tells you where to take the engines and get them rebuild/over-hauled.
I'd love to see some info. on turbo 5.4 builds, I have a 98 F-150 Lariat 5.4 short wheel-base step-side, white w/Grey interior garage kept that I plan on building.
5.4, 2V, Steel crank/rods/pistons/fasteners built to handle 800whp.
No doubt in my mind there are a lot of people who would like more info on a project like this.
@@cr500mike I have a ford 03 Screwcab f-150 and I’m tryna upgrade hp. My friend has a Harley and lightning. I’ve seen videos on RUclips where they get lightning to high hp with Whipple supercharger. I’m wondering if a brand new 5.4 2v crate engine with forged internals and whipple can make over 600+hp
Love these videos! Can't wait to see the rest of the engine build!
I just got your video recommend & I gotta say. This is the 1st time i've seen a video from your channel & MAN your really good (I mean GREAT) at showing & explaining what you're talking about. You've just got my sub...
The quality of explication and details are outstanding !
Awesome build!! What kind of hp and torque numbers do expect to get out of this build?
This is the best how to video I've ever seen.
LIKE !!!
Looking forward to seeing the start-up.
You guys do a great job !!
Awesome content!!! Thank you so much for sharing these videos!!!
Quality work on not only the build & research/information, but also audio/video & editing. Look forward to seeing more of this engine as I tinker with my 01 5.4 Expedition. Glad to see you have some quality people supporting the build.
You may have mentioned this but I’m curious as to what coil/ignition/harness/ECU setup you will be using. Thanks for sharing!
Right now we are using stock style coils and it’s all controlled by a HotwireAuto Harness and stock style ecu. Holley may be in the builds future.
This is an amazing build!
Unless those cams are custom grind you should send them back, you are leaving a good amount of power on the table and they will make your tuner pull their hair out trying to figure out what is going on. I would have a talk with Modular Head shop. Awesome build though,.
Thank you for this upload, your knowledge and experience is very much appreciated.
Keep informing the people...
Nice to see a fellow San Diegan wrenching on 2V’s
Be out that way around Thanksgiving visiting friends. Love San Diego
Looking to build this as well, awesome video
This show is awesome!
Thank you!
DJ, I met you at Marshall's Industrial Hardware today. I told you, "you'll have a new subscriber by tonight". Great Channel!
Thanks Colt! I’m sure I’ll see you again!
I’d be willing to pay good money for the CAD file to those intake adapter plates
a wealth of knowledge thank you
Thank you for your content.
Well done video
Id love a pair of those adapters if available!!!
Same here!!
SAME !!!
I enjoyed watching, but I won't be building for a street rod ! I will be building a 5.4 2V for higher torque for an F-250 used for towing so the RPM range of the high revving long duration that's needed when going up inclines under load !
Just a different performance requirement from the same engine, maybe not the most economic way but a very dependable engine that gets the job done!
Hi there. This really enjoyed the videos about the 5.4. I have an old F250 LD that has one that I don't drive anymore. My son wants to turn it into a dedicated hunting/camping 4x4. I have been mystified by the cam gear but this really broke it down into the needed steps. I am wondering if you will be doing the follow up video with the completion of the intake install. Thanks again!
Nice🤘🏼🏁
What budget do you need for this build?
Edit: I read all comments, you mention between 8k and 13k. For how the market is right now on used cars and the fact I got a 1998 ford expedition for free (with rust but well taken care), I think I can start rebuilding most of it for about 10k and have a nice sleeper! Thank you for the inspiration 🙏
I'm my experience, the header bolts don't back out but the gasket compresses. I got so tired of the leaks on a 318 chrysler. I marked the bolts and they were not moving.
Dangggg nice video man. Im subbing. Im building a 4.6 ex270ah cams edelbeock intake and long tube headers home ported pi heads and non pi bock.
Sounds like a great build! Thanks for the support!
Id be interested in those adapters if they work great
Great video! I was wondering if you had any issues when adding coolant to this engine? I have 4.6l mod motor and I put trick flow heads on it. I had it all together, added oil and spun it with the starter to get oil in the engine and oil leaked from the front of the head on both sides. I sealed the sides of the head and it stopped. So I added coolant and it leaked from the side of the head into the channel and out the back of the motor. I put rtv on the spot that it came out of the head and added more and it all came out the oil pan. So I had to pull it all out and tear it all down again. I think the head gasket was the problem, I used a Ford performance head gasket. Did you have any issues with oil leaks or coolant leaks with these heads?
New subscriber here!!! Love it...how much hp are you expecting to get from that set up?
Any horsepower numbers? It looks like you stayed with stock compression, I’m 350 hp to the wheels. Great video…. Good details on those race heads.
Great video! I just got the same cams and the trick flow 185 38cc wedge heads. Any ptv issues?
The videos are great. Can you make me a adapter to fit a 4.6 manifold to a 5.4l 2v? Just let me know how much. Thanx
Love the vids and wish I could build an engine. Can you recommend a shop in San Diego to rebuild my 99’ lightning motor?
Do you plan on selling these intake adapters or perhaps selling the cad files for those of us that can print and mill our own?
Surprised the deck was not resurfaced. Hope the build is successful.
It was surfaced, only by 5 thousands though. For overhead cam engines you want to surface as little as possible to retain accurate cam timing between the banks. The RA of the deck surface was in spec with the requirements of the head gasket.
Are you going to put it on a engine dyno I would be interested in hp numbers.
you do NOT need the follower tool, just put them in before the cam and tighten the caps down SLOWLY, its risky but if you are careful its 100x faster and 1 person job
What kind of fuel system are you putting in? I’ve got one I’m not really looking to build, but wanna give it a little more go. I’ve got a redesigned Manifold back exhaust, an uninstalled 7.3 intake, and I wanna do a fuel system and a tune and that’s about it. Any suggestions for injectors and a fuel pressure regulator?
Should always degree both cams on a mod motor so their is no variation from bank to bank
Did it off screen, did not feel comfortable enough with the process as it was my first time doing it to demonstrate it to others.
I dont believe you even opened the anti seize bottle for those plugs, you dont look like the tin man 😂
Any updates on this?!
What intake are you going to use? And what adapter plates?
It’s been a year, are you going to post an update? Thanks!
How much horsepower and torque?
What is your Reference Guide (book) for disassembly/assembly ?
So any updates?
Am I the only one that thinks it was odd that so many plugs had to be used on these heads?
Yea the heads cost 2800 plus more work omg 😳
Do the Trick Flow heads have more spark plug threads than the Ford heads? Common problem with these engines is the spark plugs blowing out due to shallow threads.
Who makes an intake for the 5.4 2v? To go with a TF top end.
Do you have a parts list. My 5.4 had a oil pressure issue for the right tensioner. So I’m doing a rebuild since I have to take it apart to figure out what happened.
A parts list I do not have. However the George Reid “4.6L & 5.4L Ford Engines How To Rebuild” is the book you need to rebuild these engines. It will have the parts list you need!
Ford 5.4 2V TrickFlow Engine Build!
Why not use the hps 5.4 hardballer intake manifold? It eliminates the need for adapter plates.
If you could find one of those I would be amazed. The trick flow offers shorter intake runners for optimized higher RPM operation which is better matched to the heads and high rpm cams. Plus it’s going into a 2200lb car so giving up torque down low for more up top is actually beneficial
Can I use these parts for 5.4 truck motor.
I want this in my 99 f250 lol
Am guessing there won't be any more videos
You forgot to show how to install the dowel pins! 😮
WHERE DID YOU GUYS GO ?
Oh, and where is your shop ? I’m in NSD county with a 2V in my E250 that I’d like to discuss with you ….
5.4 2V guys need those head to intake adapters...badly.....I haven't found anything. Info anyone?
GarageguruTv@. Have a question. So I dont know alot of engine rebuilding but Im going to be rebuilding the exact same engine. This engine is going to be put back into my 2001 Ford F250 Superduty as a daily driver and work truck. Durability and dependability is something that I want to achieve in this rebuild but I would like to increase the HP and Torque during this rebuild. Im more than likely going to just have my block bore machined .030 over and I want to try and stay with the same compression ratio. My question to you all would using the trick flow cylinder heads that you used during your rebuild cause any issue with durability or relability. What other advice or info you could provide would be much appreciated
We would love to see a engine dynamic with this motor
hey can you sell me a set of those intake adapters please?
Progress??
When’s it going to be dropped on the dyno?
This is a great option for old.mustangs but finding that adapter plate is nearly impossible.
Check out Black Market Racing. They seem to have a stock of em. 2V’s are cool motors for classic fords. The difficulty comes with the fact that the valve covers tend to run into the upper shock towers on classic mustangs, which is why many times they switch to a double wishbone front suspension.
@@garagegurutv6419 Didnt see anything for Fords at this black market racing.
@@brianblithe2271 call them, they don’t list them, they bought the old tooling and stock
@@garagegurutv6419 Roger, thanks brotha !
!!
How much power
Nice set up, but I’m more of a low end guy, maybe 6000 max
The 3v stuff made the most impressive torque. Low speed torque and mod motors typically dont mix.
Are u going to follow up with this video or no
Hey guys I'm new to the engine building game and I was just wondering if all of these upgrades will work on my 1999 F250 5.4L 2v triton v8. Any help is appreciated.
Yes they will
Alright thanks man can't wait to get all the parts.
Any new updates
The fake smile after explaining something comes off a little cringy in my opinion but other than that your doing a good job kid👍👍
It is definitely a learning curve getting in front of the camera and not seeming awkward haha. Thanks for watching!
Canu use on truck 21 truck
Where is the next video?
Didn’t deck the block?
Decked it only 0.005”. On the OHC motors you do not want to deck any more than you need to as the cam timing will suffer
How are you going to make a 4.6l intake fit on a 5.4?
CNC Machined custom adapters
@GarageGuruTV sick, I was really hoping you would say that. I can't wait to see. Would love to get some dimensions or cad files so I could try to cad up a long runner twin throttle body intake for my '02 5.4 f250 I want to put the 185's on it with the tfs specific "stage 1 cam and make a Nasty work truck
Did I win the free motor rebuild?? Lolololol. Seriously what did all that cost ? If a shop did it ... my F150 would love it . If only I had more green to burn some black ======
Depending upon what you use for your bottom end anywhere from 8k to 13k
Since when where the heads carb legal?
But did it gain power?
~430whp 440Tq so yeah
Trick flow cams do not work properly with trick flow heads. Check out MHS for full documentation of this
You just said .020” over was the minimum to use those heads. Why? You then went on to say those heads bolt onto any 4.6 or 5.4. Please clarify.
The Trick Flow 185 Heads will bolt on to any 4.6 or 5.4. The Trick Flow 195 Heads with the bigger valves require the 0.020 overbore.
@@garagegurutv6419 ok. Cool. How about a valve relief like a 351c block?
Yep otherwise "shrouding" the valves is sn issue.
Soooo, what happened to the build? Why did the channel go dark?
About to Dyno it, wiring in a standalone ecu, programming AWD mapping, and the custom intake adapters took a while. Stay tuned, I appreciate the support!
Price list?
Little under 10k, should make a little less than 500whp
@@garagegurutv6419 can you put it on the dyno
Two years later and no follow up? what happened to this channel?
Did you give up? No follow up
Not at all, the engine has run, focusing on education at the moment, many cool videos in the pipeline
@@garagegurutv6419 cool, I’m getting ready to assemble a 5.4 4v. Just curious how yours turned out
so with those heads in the 5.4 you can put the intake manifold of a 4.6?
With custom adapters yes
Yep just decided that that’s too many plugs that I gotta worry about factory should’ve done that to the heads before they sent them out I won’t be buying their brand
The reason they are there on the exhaust side is for oil pressure sensors, turbo oil feeds, etc. front and back are for optional cooling mods to aid in coolant temp consistency or electric water pump. Ones on the deck surface are so you can run the stronger Ford racing boss block and for manufacturability. They designed these heads to be used in a variety of high performance racing engines. If a couple of pipe plugs steer you away, a full engine build doesn’t sound right for you.
@Eric all I hear is wahhhhhh 🤣
So? How about hearing it runs or dyno Numbers or anything 😂
Wiring in the Holley Terminator X right now. Having to machine custom adapters and other components for an engine build on your own takes up more time than you could imagine! But yes, sounds and dyno VERY soon!
I was a builder/fab guy for years. I get it. Take your time. Ive also got a wicked 327c.i. 2v build. 13.0 to 1 comp e85, custom cams, trick flow 195 2v heads with additional hand work, custom dual plenum cross ram dual tb intake, using a rare Cammer Tr50 road race block. 572fwhp 😁. Going in a lightweight 70 maverick. 4r75w built for 800hpish,9 inch rear 4.11 gears though i may try 4.30s. on 31540r18 rear tires. Holley engine and trans controller. No it's not done. 😢... I feel your time and money complaint.
Keep it up love your content
@@rickstorm4198 Rick- is there any place online where I could see your intake? Thanks.
What happened to this guy?
Still alive, focusing on education at the moment, have a couple of really interesting episodes in the pipeline!
Word is that Trick Flow cams are not the best for their heads.
I can tell you that your channel isn't going to grow if you don't communicate with the people who comment. Seen it a hunnerd times.
You guys should make those adapter for the 4.6 2v available I would totally buy a set nobody sells them to go from the 5.4 2v to the 4.6 2v intake manifolds @ garage guru tv
Looking into it now
Thank you
@@garagegurutv6419 please get back with me I’m stuck in a hard place I’ve stuck a 5.4 2v in my mustang and nobody can make those plates for me
Wish some one would do it so we can put navi heads on b block 4.6s.
Modular mustang racing or MMR used to make them.... Not sure they still do ..
Where can u find those adapters???
