Y’all are too accepting. She said “I (as in her) barely ever went to class”. That’s her fault. She said it herself lol. He’s pushing all responsibility off of her and onto the system even though every other kid in her class probably went to class. Was it her choice or the schools choice to not let her come to class. He’s way too lenient and scared of backlash on his comments. It was cringe to watch. That’s like ppl who don’t apply for jobs and say it’s the systems fault that they’re broke and they hate capitalism. It’s their own fault. The system has tons of open positions and opportunities. Kids need to learn to take responsibility. Especially teenagers in Highschool.

@@sk8twins289 No you can't view this so narrowly. She mentioned she was getting into fights and skipping class. As someone who grew up with someone like this I have a better understanding than others on these issues.
He was an orphan raised by his grandparents who were strict, not caring for his needs and authoritarian in the household. He came to live with my family when things were too toxic at home. His father didn't want him and was in an out of prison and his mother died when he was a child. Someone like this is always going to have more difficulties handling authority than someone like myself who had both parents and a supportive home. He quite literally lived in my house and saw the support we recieved and he compared that to his own upbringing and realized his childhood was far worse than mine.
He figured it out now as an adult and has a stable job and a good partner, but it wasn't school that taught him this. Sometimes people can't or don't want to take part in the school system and they shouldn't be viewed as failures because you don't know the reasons that pushed them onto that path in life.
The girl inthe video looks healthy and happy and hopefully overcame her difficulties in high school. Somewhere along in her life she let those difficultues affect her life hence the fights and skipping class, but she is not responsible for those difficulties whatever they may be. Obviously now she has addressed them and can be open about it, but back then it was probably a source of contention or anger inher life hence why she was acting out.
When a kid is acting out: bullying, substance abuse, skipping class, fighting etc. it is usually a symptom of a far greater problem which is why the teacher said "failure of the system" note: he did not say school, but the system itself which counts social work and mental health. You need to understand this before you judge people so harshly.

@@sk8twins289 You're CORRECT. These days everyone wants to pass the blame and not take responsibility. It's really not the school's job to make the child go to class. It's the school's job to teach the students who are there.

I was voted “Weirdo of the year” at my school when I was 15. I had only gone to that school (A private boarding school) for a year, so the kids there didn’t really know me except that I didn’t drink alcohol like they did, and I loved Disney, theatre and music. Going on a stage and accepting that “award” was the most cruel thing and I cried for a couple of days. I still can’t believe the teachers at that school let that happen.
Fast forward 2 years at a different school, a sports/performing arts school, and I was voted “Performance student of the year”, which felt like such an accomplishment compared to my former title.
I don’t necessarily think that these titles should be removed, but it is so imperative that we are careful with wording them, because they can be seriously hurtful.

These superlatives are not only problematic because they pigeonhole students during a period in their lives when they’re still trying to learn about themselves and their identity, but it’s also hurtful to students who do not get chosen for any superlative at all. Schools can label these type of things whatever they want, but it’s really just an unnecessary popularity contest.

He is spot on with how he described the impact of superlatives. It just creates a fabricated image of what someone is and so we contribute that to real life especially for ones that have to do with looks. Trust me, to this day, reality tv is just a total mindfuck about actual reality. Like why don't we ever see women or men who are overweight on the Bachelor or Bachelorette? Because it is not good for tv ig. U have to draw attention by attraction and lets keep it a buck overweight people are not the norm when it comes to attraction. I am pretty chubby myself and tv and social media just ruins the image of character. I understand people need to get fit and healthy but we need to end this notion that overweight people are naturally and automatically unattractive and we should not get shamed for it. However, we do need to get healthier, drink water, eat less junk and eat more fruits and veggies, exercise, all that good stuff so we can feel better for ourselves not for other peoples expense.
