Hi Goodhumans! In preparation for the new school year, we thought it would be beneficial for teachers and student to share their perspectives, values & to ultimately be seen by the other party.
Who was your favorite teacher in school & why?

Having to decide a universal "system" of learning and growth is the ultimate impediment to public schools. Teachers want students who respect their authority first and foremost. That doesn't foster those who think outside the box.
I also think the personality type of many teachers can be safe and uninspired. I mean, teachers aren't wealthy entrepreneurs. They chose a safe path and have to follow strict systems which judge their effectiveness. Because of that, many teachers consider that sort of "respect authority, be a worker bee" learning framework to be the best.

Call me a pessimist, but I found that kind of creepy, mostly because of the type of people there are on Instagram, and also the things kids do online. I was especially surprised about the comment where she said she went Live on her pajamas.
I wonder how many people sent her inappropriate messages, and whether the barrier between teacher and student gets blurred online, compare to interactions in real life.

I had some great teachers but I also had some absolutely horrible teachers. I had one teacher tell the whole class that it was mandatory to stay 3 hours after school 3 times a week or he would lower our grade. I was on cheer so I was only able to go for an hour on Monday. He said that was fine. After a few months he told my cheer coach that I was skipping out to go hang out with boys even though he spoke to me each time I went in to his class. That teacher and my coach then pulled me out of cheer practice one day to yell at me for an hour. I eventually went and hid in the bathroom since they were both males and couldn’t go in there but they waited outside for me to come out. The student athletic director then hid behind a corner and listened in on our entire conversation without ever stepping in to help me. So I had to drop the class and the school never did anything about it.

student-teacher relationships is important. i had a teacher in high-school who basically had a beef with all of his students at some point in time. students complained that he graded tests and projects unfairly, he was regularly tardy and one time he was absent for 3-weeks straight with no good explanation. if the teacher is absent and there is no available sub, then students are supposed to go to pre-arranged teachers and sit-in on their classes. numerous teachers became concerned that we were having too much free periods and they began rejecting us sitting-in because they didn't have enough space in their own class. so one time, my whole class was sitting outside of the absent teacher's locked class, and our school's disciplinary head came round and noticed something is wrong. we then told him that our teacher has been absent for weeks and that exams are approaching and we haven't done any work. furious, he came back later and told us to write down a list of complaints about that teacher, it wasn't a day later the teacher showed up and started prepping us for the exams, he got fired after the exams finished.

I think there are teachers like this in every school, but most of the time they're not majority. I've worked in some schools where there were only two bad teachers out the bunch. I've also worked in schools where there were only 5 good teachers in a k-12 school of like 30 teachers. That was a very scary school to work in because I had to do DASA reports on teachers for bullying students. One was a special Ed teacher that would scream at students and then purposely give kids they didn't like wrong answers or neglect them completely when they needed accommodations, legally, via their IEP.

I feel like school has now turned into a thing of "who can remember things rather than who can learn things" I mean I have resolved to cheating on tests because I am so worried about the grade rather than me actually learning a subject. In my head, if I fail a test, then my grade average goes down, and then that affects my GPA and that then later affects my opportunities for the future. And looking at it like this is so wrong but at the same time the education system that we have had made it like this. In hindsight it has made students go against each other, there might a student that can learn the facts but he won't be able to tell you why everything happened and how that affected something else that still get straight As but there might be another student that can tell the in depth of a subject who gets Fs all because they don't know how to take tests or they don't know quick facts. In my opinion the education system is just completely outdated, and while there has been some strides into changing it, there has not been any major changes that are for the better of our younger students. Last thought. School has made it so that it makes a student realize what they are not good at doing instead trying to bring out what they can do, which in ways can be really good or really bad.

Just because you can memorize something it doesn't mean you can also apply it or vise verse. There are people who are hands on and not book learners who do extreme delicate jobs needed in society. I would rather want an employer who seeks a person to grow and learn as they go because times are changing and so does materials in learning. Thinking critically is important as well and not just spilling out facts. Hence why understanding something requires good foundation and a good education system. In high school i had to take 1 biology, 1 chemistry, 1 physics which did nothing to prepare me for college because you cannot teach the whole field of foundation with one class. Plus it matters who teaches you and how its tough. I would rather have students learn for 4 years of the same subject but build upon from last years that way they can get exposure to the material for a long time rather then to take 1 class of each and expect that by the time someone gets to college they are ready.

Eh it depends. A lot of “bad” teachers are just demoralized by the failed education system. My mom recently retired as a teacher after 33 years. She told me how much teaching has changed. Everything’s become standardized to the point where teachers are forced to teach how to take a test. I remember her telling me how new teachers who came thinking they were gonna make a difference were highly demoralized when they saw what they were teaching. I don’t doubt there are naturally bad teachers but I also think a lot of it has to do with the state of the education system. It doesn’t allow teachers to teach and student to learn.

The only thing is that that's a harsh lesson. If I did that in the same position in highschool I would have lost my academic program meaning I wouldnt be able to afford college. Academic integrity is no joke so if you cheat you have to own it up and not blame the teacher if you get caught.

I get both points but I just felt like I’ve seen people who got caught but the teacher didn’t make it so dramatically they just went up to them and they were outside. The situation could’ve been handled differently. But either way he still did cheat. But we have all cheat before why? We didn’t what the answer was and needed to do well

It is so good to hear both sides. Can you guys do a video on bosses vs employees. Questions should be asked:
like is it okay for friends and family to work together? Have you ever shown or received favoritism on the job than other people? I got my job not based off of favoritism and who I knew, not because of my skills. The minimum wage is too low. Bosses like to keep all the hours too themselves. I got fired for a non-valid reason. Working with people has caused me not to trust a lot of people. I will quit on the spot if I got mistreated.

As a high school spanish teacher (a 23 y/o teacher at the time), the "I work harder than people think" question really hit home. I would spend hours creating games and plans for my students based on recommendations they gave or things they told me they needed help with. A lot of times I would do it right before I headed to my minimum wage night job. The worst thing EVER is when we'd start the game and I'd have students who'd sit on their phone and refuse to play, or give me attitude. It sucks when you care about their learning and you're only doing it so they can enjoy class. These same kids would fail tests or refuse to do their work. High school teachers have such a hard job (with little pay) and sometimes it can feel like no one cares about the things you put together. However, there are some students who definitely make the job worthwhile!

I think that as a society we are transitioning into different lifestyles and some people have just started but then there are people like Erin (who I believe is a vegan for quite some time now) is very quick to school people on their transition to vegetarian or vegan etc. And the people who are willing to do that for the better good of the planet (myself included) are discouraged because people hate on them for making mistakes when they are still learning. School has definitely become more about scores and memorizing facts and not actually learning anything. It needs to be less about testing and data and scoring and memorizing and achievements. It needs to be much more about helping students learn and genuinely understand concepts!
Teachers also need to understand that all the work we students go through creates huge amounts stress, and that we have other things in our lives besides classes. We have family, friends, sports, and other activities to do other than cram for their classes and do homework till early in the morning. The homework and tests and keep us from healthy sleep styles, and takes tolls on our mental health!
I also don’t feel detention and calling out people on their mistakes in a class doesn’t help students with learning from their mistakes and what I’ve heard from others and in my experience it just develops a level of fear of mistakes, rather than learning from them!

Omg. I broke down when the English teacher mentioned that his student's dad died and the next day he was in the class because that's exactly what happened to me. My dad passed away and my mom forced me to go to class the next day. My body was there but my mind was in another place, I wasn't paying attention at all and my english professor noticed it. She called me outside the classroom to talk to me and when she asked why I was so disconnected from the class I broke down crying and she cried with me. She told me "why are you here? You can take a few days if you want and if you need that time to grieve alone or with your family". Seeing a teacher care so much about my mental health and well-being felt good. Definitely she was a great professor and her class is one of the few I really enjoyed that semester because she was so understanding and she cared a lot about our learning and all of that, I felt like she was an aunt or a mom. We need more teachers like that and definitely those teachers need more appreciation from students too. 😭
