I really don’t like how they didn’t give the mom a hard time . Someone needs to tell her the way she acts is not okay. She wasn’t just mean she was cruel . This is not healthy . Someone needs to interview her and give her a taste of her medicine.
I have the same situation with my current mom in law...she was forcing my husband to divorce me and I kept wondering wats my fault..we hardly stayed together because of his mom and I had to return back to europe for work and he couldn't get his Visa due to pandemic...she made me feel so worst on my special day by calling me ugly and fat on my engagement day and she keeps influencing her son...she has some set of expectations that is way beyond the boundaries ...she is so so controlling .we couldn't even hold hands in front of her..probably a controlling Bengali mother in law who doesn't want a wife for her son at all..
Ikr, im really hoping its mostly staged because some of the shit she pulls is absolutely abusive no question. In the latest ep she pretty much threatened to die i.e. kill herself if Shekeb left the house with Emily. Then in the playback clip all the other moms and sons laughed at it like it was a joke. All of their segments on the show have been disturbing to watch. And it’s disturbing watching them act like this behavior is acceptable and then imply that getting therapy makes you “psycho” and not “normal”. I guess none of that matters if you’re getting screen time and attention
You must understand their culture to understand her mindset! It's not OK in he US, but around the world her way thinking is the way many cultures think. If you think she is bad, take a look at the way a Japanese mother reacts when her son brings home a Caucasian woman.

This relationship is so ridiculous it makes me think it is scripted. I have been married six times and I'm 72 years old and had many other relationships, and I can tell you this is unreal!

I think Emily's Korean culture has weighted heavily on her opinion of therapy. I think everyone can benefit from therapy and it's not an indication of being psycho. I think they are a sweet couple and I wish them the best.

I also was thinking the same therapy is not only for the mentally sick people but for people to understand situations that they are in and try to make it better. But that if they want to take the suggestions that are given to them. It doesn't hurt to try.

In the most recent episode he finally did stand up to his mother for Emily. Laila is just terrible. I hope he continues to stand by his women whenever she's being mistreated, but I have to admit I'm doubtful. His mother is extremely manipulative.
Wrong, a man is not obligated to stand up for a girlfriend, he is however obligated to stand up for his wife or potential wife. The difference is his stance on the future of the relationship. I’ve been with so many women I wouldn’t lift a finger to intervene any situation because I felt they put themselves in the situation, and I knew it wasn’t something I could tolerate long term.

If she has a bad attitude and loves getting into trouble with people, then it's different. If you claim someone is your girlfriend and you introduce her to your family, you should stand up for her when she's been bullied. Emily is really patient. A relationship is not a do or die affair, if my bf's mum keeps disrespecting me and my man is being a child about it, it's just very simple, I'll leave and wish them both well.

I’m not obligated to defend anyone I don’t love. Nor am I obligated to defend anyone I do love. Fact of the matter is. I’m more compelled to defend a family member than the chick I’m dating. But results may vary, depending on the circumstances. But should my dad tell my woman he don’t like her and disrespect her. I’ll simply see to it they no longer see each other. Am I going to stick up for her? No. That is my father, the same man who will toss me a beer and tell me to get over her when she breaks my heart. Choosing between family and a girlfriend is not a choice at all. Unless our relationship has some years under the belt, and I’m in love with her, I don’t see any reason to cause a rift between family over a temp. In fact. Should she say something out of pocket to my loved ones in protest... she’ll catch an Uber home or walk.

I feel both Emily and Shekeb are victims of toxic family dynamics. The way Emily dismisses therapy as only for "psychos" and thinking that the verbal and emotional abuse from Shekeb's narcissitic and emotionally immature mother is "not that bad." The way Shekeb and his mother have little to no personal boundaries and the emotional incest she throws his way to keep him so whipped. It's all really sad.

Emily you need to hear what Shekeb is telling you. He said he is proud to be a mommas boy and hopes he can influence more men to be momma's boys because he thinks it's such a good thing. You are normalizing a very abnormal situation. Shekeb is a nice guy mostly to his mom but you are not seeing what a weak man he is.
You're so right. Shekeb is fine with the relationship he has with his mom and Leila obviously is desperate to keep it that way. Emily is the only one who wants to change things. So if Shebek doesn't intrinsically see any problems with being a mommas boy, then Emily is just enduring humiliation out of love for someone who deep down doesn't want things to change. Just saw the blind date clip. Either Shekeb is really naive/gullible or he's too good hearted because he thought his mom was actually going to sit with him and Emily to give Emily a chance. I once dated an Indian man and had the EXACT problem with his mother. Nothing I did was good because she only wanted an Indian girl for her son. Every day was a battle because of the sabotage being inflicted by his mother.

Hope they will recognize similar toxic dynamics with their moms and step up to create healthy boundaries for a sustainable relationship with their SO and moms.
@@lynndenault2133 Shakeb's dad said he thinks it's weird and that they are too close. Because he didn't step up to his wife, Shakeb followed his lead. Healthy family dynamics require listening to the other and making compromises. Leila seems to play into the protective instincts of the men in her family by acting helpless. She makes the men feel that she will fall apart without them. I feel sad for how she exploits the love her son has for her to make decisions for him that clearly keeps him wrapped around his finger. I dont think she is evil or thinks she is harming her son, her view of love is different from mine so these are just my gut reaction watching the show.

Its amazing how people only believe that someone is on their side when they agree with what they do.. Needing to be his world is ruining his life. You should love your son MORE then you need love from him. Laila is the most selfish mother on that show (and that is saying something).
East Asian and South Asian people are so controlled by their families. Imagine not realizing thinking such a family dynamic is normal.

It is a huge shame that a woman has to be treated this way by another woman. Laila was once a daughter-in-law herself and I doubt she would have accepted this type of behavior against herself. Laila is a narcissist. She is controlling. She is using "being a caring mother" as an excuse to cling to her son. As frustrating as Shekeb's behavior is, he is not at fault because his mother has brought him up this way so she knows how to push his buttons and gain sympathy from him. She has molded him to be this way and to see no problem with her behavior. Unfortunately, he will never change and neither will his mother. And just because your religion says paradise lies at your mother's feet, that does not mean you should allow her to treat you or anyone else badly and that does not mean to worship her. It means you should care for her, love her, do right by her, respect her. It does not mean live with her until she dies. In Islam the wife also has rights. She has the right to separate living conditions to her inlaws if her husband is financially able to provide. Stop using Islam to justify your unreasonable demands. It is these kinds of situations that make Islam look like a bad religion that oppresses women. When in fact it is the narcissistic control freaks that try to quote Quranic verses to make themselves look good but conveniently forget those Quranic verses that also support wives' rights. Unfortunately, there is no light at the end of the tunnel for Emily. Learn to live with it or leave him and move on.

Shekeb was married to a friend I worked with. He went on secret trips and would leave without talking to her and treated her like shit. I knew her for years and she would cry because she wanted to have kids and he wouldn’t commit to her like that. She was SOOO gorgeous and sweet and spoke 4 languages, she is sooo smart. This girl Emily says she was dating him the same time he was married - why is this not talked about. What happened to Marjan!! No wonder the mom is mad and don’t like this Emily.
Also the marriage wasn’t exactly ARRANGED like he’s telling people! She had multiple suitors, not just him, she really felt like they had love between them and she left Germany to come to the US to be with this deadbeat.
I also went to their house multiple times and his mom was super nice. I never ever saw her disrespecting anyone or his wife.
