- ALL CRUISE PRICES GOING UP ON JULY 1ST - CRUISE NEWS.
On July first Carnival, Norwegian, Royal caribbean, and MSC cruise lines prices will seem to go up over night. What's happening is these cruise lines will be including taxes and port fees in their advertise pricing. this is because of a new law forcing the cruise line to do this in California.

This is a good start, but the cruiselines should also include gratuities in their upfront price, in my opinion.
Gratuities, along with anything else that is commonly added to the booking price, should be included. Imagine buying a car, and after being quoted a price you find out that they add $1k for tires. The dealer could simply explain that you don't have to buy the car with tires but most people do. The other option would be to stop with the gratuities, and pay staff a reasonable salary.
@@Jon-yo4wj👍😂
They Do on Carnival booking page also, it shows the cost of Insurance if you choose to purchase it from them. (per person)
Agree, cruise lines should include tips in price also.
@@jB-wv4qj they don’t include it, it is an add on if you choose to have it included in the total. This could be waive to do as the tip rate might increase before your cruise happens. If you include tips at the time of booking the price stays the same. I chose to include the tips when I booked with carnival I told my agent to include them. Back in January I was on one of their ships and I did not have the tips included but when I heard that RCL was increasing the tip rate I called my travel agent and had it added right at that moment, I figured I’d rather give the increase to who I felt deserved the little but extra in cash on board.
I’m glad they’re showing final totals up front. It’s so frustrating the way it’s done now.
Full disclosure - what a concept!
In the past I would price out cruises I was interested in... one trick I found was that while they might advertise 30% off... if you track all the elements of the price... I found that while they have a discount...they also raise the gross price... resulting in essentially the same price as a previous ...less discounted deal. I love the California law for increasing transparency
I like it. I just finished paying my second cruise and realized how much I didn’t know was not included. My first one was just a small trip organized through a friend. Also it’s a good idea to review things BEFORE your trip. They randomly added an almost $400 charge after my final payment. I called yesterday to question it and they had no idea what it was. I can see people thinking it’s gratuities or something and just paying.
Great video Don! Thanks for giving us a lesson in searching and booking those cruise "great deals"!
I’m glad that they have to show the taxes and the port fees upfront. I hate it when you book a resort and then you think that’s the price and then you go down and see all the additional fees that are added, which adds another thousand dollars to your budget. Great information, Don.
Yes this a good thing. No surprises later.
Prices have gone up since Covid. I am choosing interior rooms and can only do 1 cruise per year. Since Princess and MCS has come to Orlando so I maybe able to cruise more. It definitely cost effective as there is no travel time
Thanks for the update
Good, taxes and fees should be there at the beginning price. And another thing is when they say kids free... But they charge the first a second passenger extra to cover kids price.
I have noticed that balcony sometimes is less than inside or ocean view.
Hotel web sites do the same thing especially places like Vegas where they don't disclose the "Resort Fee" which often is more than the nightly price of the hotel. I'm all for full disclosure when it comes to cruise fares. But every cruise line has to do the same thing
In Australia this already happens all up price includes gratuities
They should start including the all the restaurants instead of having to pay for some of them.
I am glad they are showing the prices up front because I hate the sticker shock when I go to book my cruise!
No matter how they're calculated, they are too high!!!
I think that’s great I hate hidden fees this is just more up front
This reminds me of when Ottawa imposed the GST on January 1st, 1991.
I was working in a pet store in Midland, Ontario at the time and the customers that came in a week before to buy, for example, feeder fish (goldfish), were INCENSED when their totals came up FIFTEEN PERCENT MORE after the GST kicked in!
We had to remind them to blame the Federal Government, not the businesses!!!
Oops, I should have said 7% more. But combined with the Ontario Provincial tax of 8%, the total was 15%.
The same should apply to hotels - anything that is not optional (city / state taxes, resort fees, etc) should be included in the advertised price IMHO
with.
The never ending sales that are "Ending Soon!" to be replaced with the same deal in a different suit - if that is the best your marketing people can come up with then you need new marketing people.
"Call to action," is what the "buy now or miss it" is called.
Unfortunately the gratuities are still going to be an additional cost.
With those crazy prices I think I will be skipping cruising vacations for now!
Thank you for everything you do to always keep us in the know
Don, that's how it should be because that's always done in Europe
I actually love this new law. Total price stated upfront. I hope the US federal hotel pricing law goes through too. It is crazy to start booking a hotel and having resort fees added at the end. Makes comparing hotels practically impossible. Ugh, federal government though, they're a joke.🙄
Hi 👋 Don. This is a good thing…everything is going up so why should cruising be any different. I just heard stamps are going up…AGAIN! Why don’t they just raise them to $1 and leave it alone for a few years. All this nickel and diming is irritating!!! Have a blessed day Don.
Wish they would add gratuities as well...
don in uk we get all taxes are shown as final price
When the taxes and fees are included in the base fare, does that mean that a solo cruiser who pays a 100% supplement will then pay port fees and taxes twice?
If the customer sees the "total cruise price" including everything, many will think right off: I can't afford that when added to flights to the cruise port and high hotel rates too. I have been priced out of cruising as a single with all of travel being so costly. BUT, I do realize there are thousands of millionaires now ~ and they WILL PAY THE PRICE.
Maybe, like a recent video of yours stated, these prices are so high, people won't cruise anymore.
Perhaps if we go into a deep, deep RECESSION, prices may come down and the customer just might be valued.
They should put up the full cost of the cruises. Love the new laws
Prices have went up already. 😢
Disneyland is not a fair comparison. Way more fun than a cruise to most ports of call. Cruising used to be special, but not anymore with all the cuts. It's not even all inclusive like it used to be.
I wish the cruise lines would have handicap cabins in the cheapest category of each type of cabins but no Princess doesn’t offer this there lowest handicap cabin is always at least 25.00 or more never the lowest price.
Hard to say that full(er) transparency is not a good thing...
I actually like this - probably only good law passed in California in last 50 years ;-)
total waste of thousands of dollars to be told you can't do this, that, have this, go there, NO PRIVACEY.
they are experts at sucking every dime you have out of your pocket!
they suggest you NOT drink tap water onboard and turn around and charge you for over priced bottled water.
they will tell you, the water is free! the cost is just a delivery fee!
you MUST have water to live.
it is a necessity to stay alive, as is air.
surprised to hear they haven't figured out how to charge for the air too!
Hi Don it seems to me everything is going up.
Yes I love the new way. Alot easier to budget for sure.
NO ONE has addressed the “issue” with solo pricing. It has been the general practice to charge solos double the single rate BUT only once of taxes etc. with this July law, will it mean that solos will have to pay double the taxes as well?
Appreciate the information!!❤
I'm glad they will be adding them in the price
Prices are going up click bait, only its not going up. Why not be honest?
Watching the replay
Long overdue.
Don always great entertaining shows🎉
So how are the prices going up?
The title should state “Advertised Prices”…
I hope the cash giveaway is still going on!
Great video ❤❤❤❤
I was hoping you weren’t going to go there because you’re better than that title. I at least gave you a 10 second view.
The old discount scam lol
What is the name of the vpn that you have?
LOL, finally. It's all good with the "price increase".
To my knowledge, you never have to pay for a cruise until you know the price for the cabin, the port fees and the taxes. If you don't like they way the cruise lines show you the prices, then don't cruise. To me, this is just another opportunity for the governments to continuously try to protect people who won't expend much effort to protect themselves. And it's certainly an infinite effort for the governments since they will never, ever be able to completely protect stupid people from themselves. But if you keep electing them, they will continue to try and continue to grow.
About time!!!
😮
Don, I got a email from you, did you send it? It was about your giveaway and said to contact you on telegram.
Don't contact. It's NOT Don - it's a scam. Watch Don's video about scams (two days ago).
It’s been like this in Europe for years. The price you see is the price you pay no hidden extras.
Yes, I agree. I am sure that our American Cousins would like to see this policy transfer to other aspects of everyday life over there such as shopping . We are fortunate in Europe to have the clarity of pricing including taxes.
Finally, something that everyone can on board with is to disclose what the price will ACTUALLY be for a cruise instead of the “advertised price”.
Is anyone else tired of the sensational clickbaitish titles I'm seeing more and more of on here? Prices aren't going up just because they disclose t he actual price as of July 1st. I hardly watch any of these videos anymore because of the clickbait titles.
The marketing teams have been very creative. Full disclosure is the best policy.
"creative marketing" is just a polite way of saying "intentionally misleading"
As a cruiser for over 20 years, this should have been in place from the beginning. It is like the truth in lending where all costs should be rolled into the total bill. As far as sales, I agree with you that the cruise lines are being quite deceptive in their advertising. Thanks Don for showing the errors in their ways of Cruise Lines.
I’m glad they are putting everything on there. I’m always surprised with all that gets added on with the final bill. Thank you Don 😮
I think the cruise lines having to advertise the total fair is a good thing. If they had to include the gratuities too, that would be even better!
Full disclosure of the final price for cruising is long overdue. Thanks for clarifying your opening title.
As a Californian I’m glad to finally see a helpful law.
I know, first helpful law I can recall in many years.
thanks to the Democrats and Newsom...next president of the United States in 2028
First time for everything they say. May not be the first in CA, but it's rare.
This is a great thing. An actual good law coming from California is always a welcomed surprise
You’d be surprised what good laws you take for granted in your state originated in California and were copied by other states. Or, as in this cruise price transparency law, were applied nationally because of California law.
Just like it is for years already in Europe!
We dont know it any other way.
More beneficial for the consumer to know all costs upfront.
Agree on checking out the prices across all cabin categories, we once got a nini suite for less than a regular balcony. It was on the Royal Princess and the mini suite was located mid ship. That was a no brainer to immediately book it. Thank you Don.
Cruise lines have been skating on this issue for decades, where airlines and other providers have had to disclose pricing, It's about time...
Now for the hotels to follow suit.
The sale that isn’t a sale just give me the bottom line.
Those cruise sales are like furniture sales; always on
...always going out of business.
@@zariaboy Come in for our 10th annual "going out of business sale" 🙄
This was a good change. They need to be upfront and transparent with pricing!!
Something that makes sense from the government of California? Finally!
You’d be surprised what good laws you take for granted in your state originated in California and were copied by other states. Or, as in this cruise price transparency law, were applied nationally because of California law.
Rant on
You struck a nerve with me on the topic of cruise line promotions or "sales." These people wouldn't understand honest advertising if it were to bite them on the back side. I offer this example. I have a trip on Princess scheduled for August. I had an excursion reserved at the cost of $69.50. I went back into that trip to see they were having a "BOGO sale" on excursions for this sailing. I checked this same excursion. The banner on the excursion said, "price reflects BOGO discount." I found it interesting the same excursion, on sale, was now $85.00. The management and sales folks at these cruise lines must think we all have "stupid" written across our foreheads. I find this same thing on all cruise lines. A favorite of mine is the "75% off on second passenger" sales at Celebrity. The downside of this sale is they charge 200% of the normal price for the first passenger. I could go on and on. My wife hates it when I get on the topic. It seems we have similar thinking regarding these sales and the future of cruising as mega-ships are concerned.
Rant off
I always ask my TA , "What is the amount I need to write on the check for payment in full"......simple!!!!
I just don't understand why this is a big deal with the Port Taxes and Fees being noted. If anything, just require the font size to be the same as the Cabin Price. While I have not cruised extensively as some, I know that the Price is for the cabin and that the Port Fees and Port Taxes are an additional item I need to know. By including them, this will allow the Cruise Lines to "raise the Fees & Taxes" portion to make more money without me knowing.
Hi Don, I like your channel, but I gave you a dislike for the clickbait title on this video. I know you're trying to compete for "views" but, is this really the way you have to do it?
NCL already started adding those fees. I just checked my booking for February and the new listed price includes those fees. Looks like the days of price drops are long gone.
Yet another clickbait title. Talk about dishonest advertising.
In the province of Quebec in Canada it’s been the law for many years to protect consumers
That’s great! I have always found that Norwegian Cruise Line port fee are approximately double than other cruise lines for similar cruises. They won’t be able to hide behind the base price anymore.
And they don’t even have that in the fine prints like in Royal. You find out the high taxes and port fees at the final step of booking paying the deposit!!
NCL was terrible with this issue. You would pick the room and then the price would literally add $1000 to the final total only AFTER putting everyone's name in it.
Always a sale on the main page!!😂
I prefer that so I’m good with this change
You are doing so well with your RUclips channel, Don; so happy for you! I remember when you were worried that you wouldn't have 50K subscribers maybe two years ago. Now almost TWO HUNDRED THOUSAND subscribers!!
You must be doing something right!
Thank you for all your informative and truthful videos. Keep up the great work!
Only the US does that nonsense. They say 100 bucks, and in the end, it is 500 bucks.
Unless we cruisers PUSH BACK, I'll be limiting my cruises to one per year!!!!....
Don, I booked Sun Princess Mediterranean cruise 2025 for a very good price through TA in early May. TA emailed me today that he got a call from Princess Curise that due to computer glitch, the very good price I booked was a mistake and they are going to correct it. They will let the TA know what the correct price was. Since I booked the cruise already. I thought the price should be lock-in. Am I wrong ?
I just got back from a trip. I paid for hotel upfront but when I checked in I was offered to upgrade for $90, upon check out I was charged $180 😮 for bs charges. One being an occupancy fee. WTH I paid upfront to occupy the room. Total rip offs. A bunch of nonsense fees.
Corporations love client subsidized payrolls! Imagine all the money saved from taxes, benefits, insurance, etc.
I'm happy!! Now, if Royal Caribbean would actual tell me what my Crown & Anchor discount is! LOL.
NCL was TERRIBLE with this issue. As a travel agent, I hate finding quotes for them. I am glad to see this changing. It looks like they've already changed it with their new Quest database.
We’ve recently booked a cruise for next year. An offer we saw when we first researched it ended before we could make the booking but it was a cruise we wanted to do and our travel agent did a great job to find us a very similar package anyway at a lower price than we were expecting. Then a similar offer to the original appeared so he investigated that but found the price for an identical cabin had gone up by more than the new discount. To book through the new offer would have cost us about £250 more than the price he’d already negotiated! Guess which package we booked!
.Not making up to a million before retirement is unfulfilled retirement.!! I’m 54 and my wife 50 we are both retired with over $7 million in net worth and no debts. Currently living smart and frugal with our money. No longer putting blames on FED for our misfortunes. Saving and investing lifestyle in the stock and forex market made it possible for us this early, even till now we earn weekly.
The deal I hate it's the BOGO on the 2nd passenger. Say it's advertised as 200 per person and you book the cruise. Then look at the price breakdown it will show 400 for the first guest and 0 for the second... it's still 200 per person🙄
Don't ever be fooled by the ads that say UP TO $1000 OFF etc. They can get away with murder in that statement by giving any amount of discount because even $1 is still up to $1000 and is still technically a correct and legal amount to give under the terms of the advert, just because $1000 is mentioned, that doesn't mean that's what you will get.
Think it's about time for full disclosure from the major cruiselines. I already check out all the "extras" ahead of booking a cruise. Once you add the taxes, port fees, etc. (plus any drink packages, gratuities, etc.), your "total " cruise fare is sure a heck of a lot higher than the advertised "starting from" cabin price.😮
