A few years ago, I got XP11 to look like that after paying for many Mods back then and spending hours learning how to generate osm driven scenery using scripting etc. I bought XP12 and I am sure XP12 can look loveley in specific (very) modded areas.Yet MSFS gives me out of the box immersive virtual flying fun not mentioning the free world updates etc.
Not to mention you don't have to spent money on scenery after scenery, mod after mod, time after time. Even after all this works and money spent MSFS scenery/graphics are superior.
@@activex7327 Never had I have to purchase so many sceneries and spend that much money than for MSFS (deinstalled now btw. lol). Default airports are better modeled in XP. And simheaven/autoortho to improve the base-sim is free.

OrbX and every other scenery dev must be losing a ton of money if default scenery is so top notch in MSFS. Superior graphics? Gotta love those melted buildings and oversized trees with the oversaturated colors. 🤣
@@gozz7733I get 0 crashes, not my fault you can't build/buy a decent system, sorry Gozz you got this one wrong. If would not sleep under a rock you would know that majority users don't get crashes (should of watched the last MSFS stream).
I take odd melted building over the the Lego block 1990s mesh. Too bad that cities in MSFS looks 100 times better that in Xplane and not to mention that they look exactly like in the real world (That's not my opinion, that's 12 million users opinion).

Facinating. When FSX was effectively retired, I played X-Plane11 a lot. However it wasn't until Orbx TrueEarth came along I felth the graphics for my VFR flying was good enough. I used ReShade to to fix some of the issues you've pointed out. Of course now we have MSFS, I've not felt the need to return to X-Plane, which is a shame as it was enjoyable, but who knows in the future maybe. Just to give some context on disk sizes, MSFS on my harddisk is around 200 GB and covers many areas in exceptional detail, X-Plane 11 with the UK TrueEarth was around 450 GB.

Undoubtedly, MSFS is a far more “complete” experience out of the box - I don’t think most would pretend otherwise. This video was really an exercise in; “can we make X-Plane look “good enough” to still be enjoyable by modern graphical standards” haha. Personally, I think the answer is yes. I still enjoy both sims but, for sure, my hard disk does not! XD

The stuttering is an interesting one; I can’t really say that I noticed anything at the time and few others have made similar comments on other videos recently - I’m wondering if I haven’t for a little hardware / software gremlin that needs sorting out. . . For sure though, XP12 can still tax ones system pretty heavily (with the settings cranked up).

Great video thanks, totally agree that the sim has a strange lighting system. The view outside seemed over-bloom and washout. ShadeX seems to do the same things the free ReShade can. Is there something ShadeX does better? Thanks for the shadow fix!

Thank-you for taking the time for making this short but rather inclusive demonstration of X-Plane 12. I had all but forgotten it existed once I became consumed in MSFS. I remember reading that someone considered X-Plane had more realistic aircraft handling, but MSFS had better graphics and was closing fast when it comes to authentically replicating aircraft performance. But with the addons you demonstrated, I should give X-Plane another look. But with what I understand about graphics and other “geek” things when it comes to computers, I could get even the plain (pun intended)/un modified X-Plane 12 appearing great. But with these addons, I certainly could save burning up brain cells for the appearance I desire.
I did take the time to view your computer specs. Good gosh! With that thing, you could start your own space agency and beat everyone to Mars inside a year! Truly, as one who has been fooling with MSFS for a little while, one does need a PC that matches yours in order to truly enjoy oneself without having to continually tweek graphics. Therefore, start saving those pennies, farthings, cents, yens, or whatever your country uses as coinage and get something similar to the host.

What you read, is a pretty fair assessment I think; MSFS is obviously the prettier sim but, X-Plane can be made to look fairly decent. X-Plane still has an edge on the flight modelling / realism front (particularly when it comes to the heavy jets) but, MSFS has been catching up there and it looks like MSFS 2024 should continue to advance in the flight modelling department.
Haha, indeed; I would never ordinarily have spent so much on a PC but, I figured it was an “investment” for the channel (especially as I do plan to move to 2K content, one of these days. . .).

You have XP 12 looking beautiful. However I notice your video shows continuous microstutters, or did the video render the stutters during the RUclips upload maybe?

Cheers! It’s an interesting point that you raise actually; I’d be inclined to say that the stutters are mostly caused by my video rendering software / RUclips compression. I didn’t notice any such behaviour whilst recording (although I’m not always the best at picking these sorts of things up) but, I have had a few comments about stutters in some of my recent videos (MSFS vids also). I’ve been experimenting with editing techniques recently so, I think that probably accounts for the stutters. To be fair either way, at max settings, X-Plane does hit the PC pretty hard.

As you mentioned shadex first - as a beware for some of you, maybe not most, but apparently it has some issues with updates and authentication. Meaning, after some updates it will ask you to re-activate. Doing so however doesn't deactivate earlier copies and while still on the same machine you might end with the error message that your key has been used too many times - therefore not activating your product. On the XP forums they explained to just send them a quick email to reset the key for you. I have not had a response and it has been a couple months.

Yea that's sweet and inspirational for sure...thanks! I'm using a 43 inch LG 4K TV as my monitor but running it at 1080 x 1920 with AA at 4 and Antriscoping filter at 2 and I'm blown away with how beautiful everything looks and I got a VERY BIG boost in FPS...cloudy and rain today at Chicago KORD at the Terminal in the default Cessna 172....60 FPS with most graphics settings maxxed including Clouds...almost looks like 4K...I have an nvidia RTX 2080 card....this is for those who may be struggling with graphics and FPS...you don't have to go 4K for things to look good.

Yes, I still sim at 1080p also (although, I am considering moving up to 2K, if only for the sake of my vids) and it’s obviously a nice way of balancing graphical detail vs performance. Personally, I have no issues with 1080p but, I know some simmers are stalwart 4K guys haha.

I was using 2K and it was ok but 1080 x 1920 is what X Plane is pretty much based on and I notice a BIG difference in performance. I think many people don't realize how good it can look at 1080 with a bit of anti aliasing. I was always having minor issues with the higher resolutions but now my problems are solved. Alot of people...myself included get caught up in the 4K stuff...yea it looks good but issues come along with it...not so with 1080 and my graphics are close to max....smooth as silk. Keep your videos coming....very nice and thanks!

Like you I'm using XP12 on a fairly hi spec PC. Presently working on creating scenery for all of my RAF Pathfinder dad's airfields, Sgt Pilot on Lancs.
Very satisfying to bring them back in memoriam to the 55700 who gave the greatest sacrifice.

Been using Xplane 12 exclusively in VR since it was on sale in Steam a frw weeks ago and with tweaks like autoortho and simheaven its a fantastic sim in VR, the visuals in the Reverb G2 are sharp and the XP12 trees are stock 3D out of the box. The only problem is the payware Aircraft are much more expensive and there is less support than the more comercial MSFS but its all good for compitition.

if x-plane 12 will need add-on to be more looking real then I prefer Microsoft flight sim 2020 at least looking more real with just Ultra settings without any purchasing add-on
and beside of all of this, quality and color its not comparable with MSFS 2020.

MSFS needs tons of scenery-addons because the default ones are really bad. XP’s default airports look better in general. That means you will spend more money/time to have decent airport-sceneries than in XP for installing simheaven-autgen and autoortho. And the colours of the atmosphere are amazing. MSFS is also lacking the great precipitation effects like snow building up/melting that makes XP so immersive. Not talking about all other advantages of XP. For me XP12 with just a few addons gives me a better general-immersion. MSFS almost only real advantage over XP12 with autoortho are the landscapes below 5000ft (autogen, grass etc.) and the better optimized performance. For me not enough to switch it with XP12+AO. I stopped using MSFS because I was missng way too much things I’m having in XP12. But each its own.

For sure, MSFS is the ‘prettier’ sim in its default state (I don’t think that most would suggest otherwise); X-Plane does have its advantages though and this video was really about seeing how far I could push XP graphically + a guide to which mods I used - as requested by viewers. Ultimately, most sims have their own unique strengths / weaknesses and it just comes down to user preference at the end of the day : )

It's funny, because I think MS Scenery Simulator looks way too artificial and oversaturated. Some other things you can do, that are free, with the shadow edit, you can bump your Shadow Quality settings down one or two, with little to no quality loss, and a decent performance gain. In the same settings file, you can add FXAA on top of MSAA, then bump that setting down to 4x. In Nvidia's control panel you can enable MFAA to be applied on top of MSAA. Also, you can edit the registry to unlock a setting in Nvidia's Control Panel to add image sharpening. I've got a Ryzen 9 7900x and 4070ti, and Xplane has never looked better.

I do agree, that MSFS can look rather over saturated / artificial at times (it’s somewhat of an “artistic impression” of how the world looks haha) but, overall, I still think default MSFS is a more “consistent” experience than default X-Plane. My main issue with X-Plane, is that even at midday, on a CAVOK day, things can still (somehow) look dark at times (the same with the colours). Either way, a bit of tweaking can go a long way in either sim and I’m generally very happy with how I have XP at this point.

Indeed! I swear MSFS scenery/graphics are too overrated. To me, it rather looks cartoonish (not to mention the terrible avionic system performance and input lags) While even Prepa3D and XP, do give a more serious look, in my taste. Prepar3D also have bad avionic performances though. XP avionic performances are fluent!
What do you use for live weather? Defuault or Active Sky etc?

I've noticed this ever since discovering the channel, I am beginning to wonder if it is done on purpose to mimic the cockpit headphone/mic equipment. Eitherway it is unpleasant to hear the clipping/distortion for those of us listening on decent headphones.
I do, Let’s Fly. Logitech auto-updated my drivers and it’s screwed all my audio settings. I don’t think the audio is clipping, since I’m not even close to peaking out but, something is definitely up. I’m not much of an audiophile so, didn’t notice it as much as some of you guys but, I do need to sit down at get things figured out. I did some tweaking ahead of my last recording, is this video any better (in terms of the audio quality)?

Haha well, I do very occasionally edit my audio to give it an “RT effect” but, that certainly wasn’t the case here, Dalar. When did you discover the channel, out of interest (so far as I’m aware, my audio issues have been prevalent for a couple of months)?

Hi Retro,
ShadeX and Visual XP do different things. Visual XP adjusts sky colouring, cloud shape, ground shadows etc, whilst ShadeX can be used to adjust in-sim brightness, contrast, sharpness and general visual settings. You certainly don’t *need* both programs but, I find them to work well in combination. If you’re unsure, I would suggest first buying Visual XP (should you so wish) and seeing how you go with that. If you’re happy with the results, then great, otherwise, you can always reconsider ShadeXP thereafter.

My X-Plane 12 is currently broken and returns an error after last update 12/16/2023. I did update my Nvidia 3060 Ti driver to 537.42 but did not work. This is bad

The 4090 would be perfect for VR
Competition is good so I hope someday X-Plane can partner with google or someone with access to streaming satellite imagery, but in it's current state I have no reason to get Xplane 12, and this is coming from a diehard Xplane 11 fan. I've just been spoiled with the ease of exploring new areas to fly in MSFS that it's hard to come back to the rather harsh and unrealistic Xplane scenery.
That’s fair, FlyJagz; competition is indeed a great thing for the hobby. I gather “AutoOrtho” allows one to stream satellite imagery into X-Plane but, the program also creates its own issues (such as long load times). MSFS is indeed pretty special, in that (for the first time really) it allows the user to genuinely explore the world around us : )

The ground scenery is Orbx True Earth Great Britain (I was using the XP11 version however, Orbx are now offering an XP12 version). The rest of the graphical enhancements are detailed in the video.

The orbx site lists Truearth GB scenery as xp11 only, so it presumably has some problems in xp12?

Indeed; True Earth is technically only compatible with XP11 but, easy enough to install into XP12 (with no major issues, so far as I can see). Obviously, it’s a worthwhile “hack”, if you’ve owned the True Earth sceneries previously but, otherwise, I gather Orbx will be bringing True Earth GB to XP12 so, probably best to wait for that, if you’re interested.

Just bought XP12 - my Orbx True Earth GB works perfectly - keep in mind that you won't see snow on the ground!!! I just linked the scenery files in my XP11 to XP12 - performance is much the same.... I am hoping my other Orbx XP11 scenery will work as well - really don't want to spend all that money again - have fun!! 🙂

How to u get the green cross during your flight in pfd

Those green crosses are the flight directors. The FD’s can be turned on with the little switches at either end of the MCP (autopilot panel), located towards the bottom of the unit.

The best and most easy to use mod for XP12 is sadly payware. It's called MSFS 😉
Honestly, you can fiddle with it as much as you want, especially in VR, it's no use. I use XP12 because Torquesim has no SR20 with Entegra and DFC90 for MSFS, and that's our plane (although with IFDs instead of Garmin).
Unfortunately you need a HUGE amount of complicated mods to make X-Plane 12 look like its not from 15 years ago. But to be fair, the only advantage X plane has on MSFS a vastly larger choice in high fidelity premium 3rd party aircraft. MSFS is still pathetically lacking in this area with only about 5 or 6 available premium ad-ons, being that MSFS is almost 4 years on the market, this is kind of sad!
I am only having issues when I use payware aircraft, and that is that the fps is good but the plane gets randomly blurry and then hd. this happens on even small default airports. is there any fix for this

I sometimes experience the same issues with X-Plane. I believe it has something to do with approaching the limits of you GFX memory. So far as I am aware, other than turning down your graphics settings within the sim, there is not much you can do to fix the issue (unfortunately).

Unfortunately, as stated, you almost need a Cray supercomputer to run X-plane 12 and even then, I see your rendering distance isn't maxed out. The latest bug of it raining in the sim constantly is a real pain. As a private pilot, I actually find little difference between the flight modeling, in the C-172 between MSFS and X-plane 12. In fact, the MSFS 172 seems more realistic in landing distance, etc. I'm becoming disillusioned w/X-plane 12 myself. Spending lots of $$ on add-ins and taking a hit on frame rate when they run is not acceptable in my humble opinion.

Yes, X-Plane 12 is, unfortunately, rather woefully optimised (at the moment). In fact, for the most part, a modded X-Plane 11, will give one a similar experience to 12 and with somewhat lower hardware requirements; MSFS is obviously king though, when it comes to graphical fidelity / performance.
I rather tend to agree with you; I do still find XP to be the better sim, when it comes to flight modelling on the heavy jets etc but, for GA, there isn’t much difference between the two platforms and if anything, I actually prefer MSFS. XP certainly still has its benefits / place on the market but, Laminar would do well to bring the sim up to more “modern” standards.

Since I started touching X-Plane, I completely forgot MSFS. When I fly in MSFS (due to the Fenix! if not, bye bye!) I do not get the feel, Indeed MSFS flight model is better than ESP platforms, but... no. Really bad on ground Physics... I just cannot touch MSFS any more (for now). What I like in XPlane (PRepar3D as well even if its EFP) its the dedication to the purpose of flight simulation foe real, and not gamish like MSFS.... uff. X-Plane's graphics, I really cannot complain, because In XP... you fly for real!
The same for me. Tried to get back into MSFS several times with no success. Super boring physics and cartoonish graphics after XP. Regret that one day I tested XP12 )). Add-ons like SimHeaven, Visual XP and Map Enhancement work just fine.

How much Fps do you get with 8x msaa? I have a i9 13900kf and 4080 but with 8x msaa my fps average is 28 to 36.

I haven’t tested extensively but, at a quick glance, I’m getting around 70fps under the conditions / settings demonstrated here in the video (although, testing with the default Citation, instead of the Airbus). I’m afraid I have no idea what could account for such a huge difference between our numbers though (I can’t imagine a 4090 makes *that* much of a difference). . .

I think that with the cessna, it's normal to get 70 fps, but if you change to an A320 or A321 from Toliss, fps drops a lot with a big payware scenery. I don't think there isn't so much difference between 4080 and 4090, so the fps is generally close to each other. Thank you so much for your great answer ! ShadeXP should have little-to-no impact on FPS. Visual XP will have some impact, due to the enhanced shadows / clouds etc. I presume those are the 2 addons you were querying (as opposed to the other mods mentioned in the video)?

ShadeX works with XPlane 11, I don’t think Visual XP does. Check out Enhanced Skyscapes though, as that offers a huge visual upgrade for XP11; it may affect FPS, but the dev offers a free trial (or at least they used to) so, check that out to get an idea of how things will run on your system : )

not recommending shadex, stops working without a reason at any given day refering to trial license stuff, which should not happen if you paid for the program. i never buy aerosoft products for such reasons.

XP12 is completely let down by having AA/AF capabilities of 2012. No TAA, No DLAA, No DLSS, No Frame Generation. Every XP12 video is just a feast of nasty jaggies and shimmering.

@@activex7327 Having to purchase a new sim for that? Lol. XP will fix it in next version (for free). And at least clouds in XP have an impact. MSFS failed to simulate anything when flying into stormy clouds and also failed to offer a weather-radar (in developpement at for soon). Must hurt. @@m3taleye headshake simply moves your camera randomly, XPRealistic takes Gs into account and moves the whole aircraft mesh for the camera, not the camera - but sure keep waffling even though you’ve not tried both

Soooooo much better in looking more realistic than msfs!!! First, you should become an in house artist, or at least a visual art consultant for all flight sims corps, not just xplane. SECOND, and I really mean the second is clouds appearance. They are now the major downers on the screen. They look very nice (msfs term) and much more realistic than msfs, but fall out from the picture, as if it was taken by another camera, which was a bit out of focus, and therefore way too blurry and even a notch overexposed to make a visual dissonance with the rest of the image. In other words, xplane has to reduce cloud blur and exposure a bit, even though it may show some unwanted artifacts, but will make the scene complete and more brain tricking, not provoking, if you know what I mean. ANYWAY this is the best flight sim visuals I ever saw! The xplane is back in the leader position. Msfs is just getting the nomination for the amount of details, which is in category "too much of anything becomes a garbage".

I fly strictly in third person view because I can't fly in the cockpit view with first person because I don't even know what the first button is on the simplest airplanes like a cessna152!!!

The Fenix A320 is about to become the best airbus in any sim.
The equivalent PMDG aircraft are better in MSFS.
The A2A PA24 is as good probably better as any SEP aircraft in any sim.
The JF B146 is better than any other B146.
In general. Any best of type aircraft that’s currently available / about to release in XP, P3D and MSFS are just better in MSFS. Not just the visuals, but the whole overall experience in MSFS is better than XP or P3D.
FSLabs late to the party, but I’m sure they will also add to the value of choosing MSFS.
That doesn’t mean that XP doesn’t have a place in the market as the 2nd best simulator available. After all Ford still sell cars.
Enhancing X-Plane is good but not necessary. Just one example, If you see the asphalt textures here on the apron, taxiway and runways they're extremely realistic. Grease spots, cracks, faded paint lines, all give a great feel of realism too. Even in X-Plane 11 they were good. MSFS is a JOKE. The textures look like a cartoon, and can't be fixed even with Orbx or 'Real Environment' products. That's just one of many problems with MSFS, if you insist on comparing these two simulators.
I downloaded Visual XP and ShadeX after this video... unfortunately it made the sim look WAY WORSE! It flattens half the buildings, and makes the trees look like all shiny and plasticky/ something out of a cheesy christmas store: COMPLETELY UNREALISTIC! I've been playing with the sliders and settings for over 3 months and I cannot get it to look as good as the stock scenery. My home airport went from alive and happening to a flat plain with a couple lines of gray (I suppose those are supposed to be roads) running here and there... Waste of time, waste of money. At a certain point, I realized I have other things to do in life besides spend it tweaking settings. Like,... LIFE. Real life living.
Very sorry to hear that, Matt. What you’re experiencing is rather strange though, as neither Visual XP, nor ShadeX, should be affecting your ground scenery in any way (they are essentially only lighting / colouring enhancement tools (with some modifications to the cloud / shadows also). Are you sure you haven’t got some sort of scenery conflict / ordering error (that would be a far more likely culprit by the sounds of it)?
You’re right, there are far more important things to be focusing on in life but, I do hope you manage to get things sorted (I’ve tried my best during this video, to outline the processes that I used and have also uploaded my ShadeX profile over on X-Plane.to, if that’s of any help).

The quality of your vocal in this video is really poor. Super high frequencies, no bass and really distorted. I could feel it in my teeth! Couldn't get past a few minutes. You either need a new mic, or else you need to flatten out your EQ settings; if you're boosting the high freqencies (>6Khz) to make it sound like that, don't! Get some bass into the vocal. It never normally sounds like this in your older videos, which I used to really enjoy.
For sure, Droge. I didn’t realise it was *that* bad but, Logitech (in their infinite wisdom) auto-updated my audio drivers some while back and it messed up all of my settings (it’s certainly not an effect I was going for haha). I need to take the time to sit down and set everything straight again. I did try and tweak things ahead of my last video - (if you get a chance) please let me know if this is any better:

The scenery is crap, looks worse than, the old FSX, here it is 4 years, since MSFS 2020, and X-Plane 12, is still using old graphics, like the 1980's video games. Don't waste your money, on this garbage. This UTuber, got the game, for free, and still many years, later, has to keep hawking this completely garbage, un-simulator.

To say that this looks worse than FSX, is being quite hyperbolic but, I get it; yes, X-Plane doesn’t look as good as MSFS. That’s not the point of the video though; X-Plane, as a sim, does do some things better than MSFS so, the point was to try and make XP12 look as good as it can (and provide users with a guide on how to do that).
To your second point, I’ve never received a penny, or any free copies of the X-Plane, from Laminar haha. If I had, I’d be doing a pretty poor job as a shill - it’s taken me over 4 months since XP12 released, to actually produce a video on the sim. . .
